    Callas is an abject vocal lesson. All of these selections prove why she was Prima Donna Assoluta. Elvira De Hidalgo gave Callas her vocal foundation, but the natural talent was there from the beginning. It was also her fierce determination to learn every aspect of true Bel canto singing, and she mastered it.

    "Maria's agility is without peer"
    .....no. Sills and Sutherland absolutely destroy Callas's coloratura, and for longer periods of their careers.
    she is a wonderful singer though. I prefer her heavier Verdi work where you get more of the lower register 3:)

    • @marr6920
      @marr6920 8 лет назад +26

      Actually Callas's coloratura is very good and peerless it is true, and she uses it for expression not showoff.
      Even though, I adore Sutherland and Sills a lot (I AM A SUTHERLAND FANATIC), I have one problem with her, she often goes too freely and not only transposes passages upward to avoid the low notes, she adds unnecessary coloratura, and sometimes they don't have any meaning of expression, just mere showoff...

    • @beachfanatic2010
      @beachfanatic2010 5 лет назад +23

      Sills was a humming bird and Callas is a Harpy Eagle. Vocally Callas has at least 10 times more weight and volume than Sills and I am not kidding. Sutherland is heavier voice than Sills but still a coloratura with Spinto weight - Joan was never a real dramatic voice! Callas in the theater had a much heavier voice and bigger voice than these two. Especially in her middle voice! Do you have any idea what it takes to move such a dramatic weight and steely voice in an agile manner? What Callas did was impossible. Plus Callas has actual equal presence and agility in ALL her registers, not just above Bb5 like Sills and Sutherland.

    • @lintonNZ
      @lintonNZ 3 года назад +2

      Callas shits on both

    • @-giakhanh--kayden-8337
      @-giakhanh--kayden-8337 2 года назад +7

      people often ignore the fact that agility also consists of the ability to freely move between registers and to execute coloraturas in the lower registers. Sutherland and Sills can never dip into heavy chest voice within a mostly high coloratura line like Callas did in Armida. Their low trills (invariably in low head voice) sounds like a hand fan flapping (the ones in "In mia man") while Callas' same trills sounds like a tornado of fury (and in chest voice). And in terms of dynamics, there is absolutely NOONE who utilizes them to serve the drama as fully as Callas.

    • @eberlinpascal2837
      @eberlinpascal2837 2 года назад +6

      Pas d'accord avec vous .La Coloratura surpasse de beaucoup celles de Sills et de Sutherland ,car elle rend la coloratura profondément expressive et lui donne un sens .Les autres sont plutôt de mièvres rossignols à côté de Callas .
