I see in the last video you had your last video you had the roland connected wirelessly to the plant wave. Is this connected directly to the point wave through its Wi-Fi settings?
We ALL need a good D-beam.. but this was really cool. Maybe you can see if they react to music being blasted at them/flowers being tickled for pollen/fruit being plucked/kind or harsh words/watering the soil/an edible plant you eat as it composes its own funeral dirge..
it is good fun and I was surprised how much they reacted to my light and touch tests, even though I suspected a fair amount based on what is being measured - a fun mix of music and science/nature I'll have to upload my first audio interaction once I got the MIDI to route to the MC-101 (a little trial and error, boring on cam) - the patch on the MC-101 and the pattern coming out was absolutely morose, not that the plant is expressing anything but the tone of the music coming out was dark and depressing like some heavy Rachmaninoff mixed with Ligeti/Penderecki and some avant garde thrown in - interpreted/manufactured or not is was still compelling music oddly enough, a few hours before I made the cuttings of the 2 plants from some shrubs outside to use for the tests (I had no live plants to test) - as a science guy/pragmatist I won't ascribe feelings/emotions to a plant but if it were to have any, being cut off the shrub and "manhandled" for frivolous musical purposes would account for such depressing "music " at the time of the early recording :-) but hey this isn't a dopey M. Knight Shyamalma-ding-dong movie (i.e. The Happening)
That has to be one of the most mental things I have seen in ages! I am still not sure it's really a thing... or am I just too sceptical..?? Like I said on FB - I have read too much John Windham!
he he, it's real not April Fool's Day stuff (see the date) - just a simple way to gather biological information from an organism and form it into usable musical patterns like we can do with EEG data or myosensors (I have CV convertors for those to control modular synths with my mind and muscles. sort of) basically like hooking up biofeedback or polygraph equipment and using the data in other ways - nothing sinister but could make some cool sci-fi story I suppose :-)
by the way John Wyndham's full name was supposedly John Wyndham Parkes Lucas Beynon Harris - Inky's last name is Beynon... is that spooky or what? :-) it's certainly an interesting coincidence
Great video! I'm having problems connecting a Behringer Crave to my plantwave, tried both MIDI DIN and USB MIDI and can't get any sounds at all going, would you have any advice at all where to start looking for a solution?
thanks - you have to verify the MIDI setting in the PlantWave iOS app - check the MIDI channel in the app and ensure the MIDI output (TRS MIDI) is enabled, and you need the correct TRS MIDI to DIN-5 MIDI dongle (type A, Korg and Akai), then connect a normal MIDI cable to the Crave and check the Crave MIDI channel if necessary - that's it!
@@SynthAddict Amazing thank you! Seems like I have only used a type B cable and I did not realize I had the wrong one until now! Type A cable ordered - eager to see if it works! Thank you very much for your help!
I find that Kale and Pine Trees have the best phrasing. They really put a lot of thought into it... Pine Tree really likes to go off into chromatic type playing. Hes a rebel...
the best is the Larch, number 7... the Larch :-) but seriously, different people touching the leads is fun too, but they often don't sit still long enough
Hey Synthaddict, just got my plantwave and I am unable to get midi out of it, to any device at all, I've tried everything I can think of...any tips? thanks!
hey , thanks for the interest, a few things to try (some mentioned in my on-screen text) 1. make sure that cables are all seated well in PlantWave module and the MIDI synth 2. if the lights don't change on the box (red/blue colors) you are not getting a signal from the leads - try with you body's own output first by grabbing the leads (no plant) 3. set the desired MIDI channel for the box with the PlantWave app while box is connected to your iPhone/iPad, or cycle through all 16 mii channels on your synth until you get a response 4. the PlantWave app is great for easy testing and mobile fun (batteries and Bluetooth), but I prefer to use hardware synths - try both and see what works for you :-)
This is absolutely amazing. Help me understand did you preset the Roland to have the rain forest on the MIDI 1 channel so that when you plugged it in it's all ready to go? Can you preset it to play any instrument with the PlantWave the same way? Are there any synth that have this capability that are less expensive than the Roland? Thanks again. This is just wild.
thanks for the interest - it is cool tech the Roland MC-101 Rain Forest patch was just a preset I chose for the demo - since the PlantWave device outputs more than MIDI note data from the sensors (also modulation) I wanted to choose a preset that was an effect sound that also had good response to the modulation info like with any MIDI keyboard controller, you have to use the PlantWave app to set the MIDI channel of the PW sensor block or use the default MIDI channel, but you only have to set it once unless your synth hardware needs change on the MC-101 I was able to use a WIDI Master dongle that adds Bluetooth 5 to any MIDI device with the DIN-5 connector (see my vid on that) which means if I add a battery pack to my MC-101 I can use the PlantWave and MC-101 outside on the go and wirelessly :-) that is powerful and fun MC-101 also has 4 instrument parts like on a Roland JD-Xi keyboard, so it can do a whole song on the go and one part can be PlantWave controlled (or multiple parts with PlantWave if you record the MIDI for each pass) - all without a computer and totally mobile if you like - the outdoors can be your studio any MIDI source will work, so I recommend using the PlantWave app first to get used to using different onboard sounds, and it can also map to other music apps on your iPhone or iPad via Bluetooth (no wires) :-) once you get the hang of it you can use the MIDI out (type A mini jack to DIN-5 connector) to connect to any MIDI harfware going back to 1984 :-) I hope that helps - my video has other nerdy details in it
@@ancientaerials3075 PlantWave has BT and the WIDI Master is used to connect a MIDI keyboard to BT, other WIDI products (USB) can be used with a Windows PC since Windows BT sucks for MIDI without a WIDI dongle once your MIDI channels are dialed in on the PC, Mac, or synth the PW can drive any one of them - don't forget the PW app first
Try the old "dry ice fog" thing, and bathe the plant in thick CO2 fog and see what response you get.... hot water and dry ice..... plants like CO2..... also try using a simple patch, and as controlled an environment as possible, room temp, available light, wet and dry soil conditions..... You have some interesting stuff there.....!!!!!!!
I had a bunch of ideas but the lights were the most immediate and visual, and primary photosynthesis mode (more CO2 used, in light) to primary respiration mode (more O2 used, darkness) is probably a gradual transition and not too exciting on camera I'll do more soon with diff plants I would hook up some insects but they move too much but the chitin exoskeleton is a good insulator
Omg you discovered.......errrrr....errrr where is it.....can I have some......or matbe a few......where is this.....witchcraft I seek?😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌.....thats sooooooi good
thanks Inky, it's good fun and somewhat useful - at the very least I can use the PlantWave app to record MIDI data from various plants on a nature hike to be used for compositions and other modulation stuff later :-) as I explained to Mr. Brooks above it's just basic biological data collection repurposed, but looks like some weird sort of magic at first :-) plants can make some interesting patterns, fun for rhythm variations - imagine an all plant and one human DJ live set - add a little quantizing and live corrections and you could have some dynamite stuff or utter crap - it's an adventure
@@InkyDaCaT you betcha - I would even include some insects if the signals would read through the chitin exoskeleton and they would sit still - perhaps I could borrow a Madagascar hissing cockroach from a former coworker at the local zoo to test it the hiss they make out the spiracles on the sides of the body sounds like an 808 cymbal or open HH :-)
also it brings a whole new meaning to the "fern bars" of the 70s - imagine the ferns creating the chill music in the background for the relaxing customers, or at least the intermission music for a nightly DJ
