I had a cockatiel who refused all mixes except the smaller budgie seeds. He ate vegetables and some eggs and loved them all! He lived 27 years old, so the budgie seed along with the vegetables didn’t seem to hurt him. Good luck to you! Your a very kind and patient person!

Try sprouting his seed mix. If he won’t eat anything else, sprouted millets are much healthier than dry unsprouted millets. Also, if he sees the different stages of sprouting the millets, he may be more receptive to eating leafy greens. If he likes toys, try using a favorite toy as a treat. I have had success doing this, using the favorite toy as a treat and not offering the favorite toy unless during training.

Thank you for this series! One of my cockatiel (a rescue) expresses a strong need for respect of her personal space and I see Clyde having a lot of the same body language. In the case of my cockatiel, what really made us bond was allowing her to almost always choose whether or not she was interacting with me. Even offering food was offending to her if I was doing it for too long, kind of like "don't you get it stupid, I said no!". So what worked in terms of stepping up was actually jumping up! Cause she was confortable with the distance between her and my hand and she felt in charge enough to feel motivated, she jumped on my hand no problem! One year and a half later, she knows how to step up with my hand close to her but she still really dislike it! But she loves to fly to me, knowing that I will raise my hand in time to catch her and I know that it's her way of trusting me, feeling happy that her personal space isn't invaded!

      Oh man you're awesome!
I learned that my quaker girl would avoid stepping on my hands and it tooke me a week of observing the little diva until I noticed that she was not scared of me at all, but scared od my hands, and therefore I had to let her step onto other body parts like, my shoulder, so she could build trust to eventually get on my hand.
She loves me a lot, for every angry scream and and attitude she gives me, she will later sit on my chest and give me kisses, or bathe in my wet hair.
Back when I got her, I was told this bird is not tame at all and does not want to interact with people at all. Most people don't take their time to actually look and listen to their bird, but you clearly did! That you noticed your cockatiel prefers to jump to you, is genius! Such a subtle difference, yet you figured it out!

We got super lucky with our Female Cockatiel. She came on a store bought seed mix (granted she was only 4 months old when we got her) and we started with adding your pellets to that mix. Once she decided she loved the pellets, I mixed up your seed mix and she took to that with no problem! Then we introduced your freeze dried feeding system and she took to that super quick as well. Her diet now is breakfast of your seed mix with pellets and dinner is a tsp of your freeze dried feeding system on top of whatever was left of her breakfast. She is an amazing eater and is very nut/millet/fruit motivated for training purposes. She knows what nut mix bag (salt free) looks like and i swear she says "Lets Do This" when I pull it out. She is all sorts of ready to train once she sees that bag! We didn't even finish the first bag of the store bought seed mix before she was completely converted to your stuff. I feel like her being so young was very helpful but we also did all of the BirdTricks things and it worked amazingly. Thank you so much for all of your help to make sure our little Phoebe has the best life she can! BT for Life!

I am so delighted that you have taken on Clyde as a project. Cockatiels can be such stubborn creatures, but when you win them over, they are such a delight. 🥺 I got my last cockatiel 2 years ago. He was terrified of hands & it took quite some time for him to adjust to interacting with our family. He was so scared, he refused to even eat out of our hands. The one thing that helped me convert his diet was chopping the chop up VERY fine & sprinkling a little bit of seed on it & mix it together. Our baby, Kiwi, is now the most adorable guy ever. He still doesn't want to hang out on hands, but he will step up on our hands. He loves sitting on our shoulders & cuddling us. He is the friendliest bird ever & is the most relaxed/chilled bird ever. We also have a lovebird & he is the exact opposite.....as hyper as the day is long (but I still adore him). Just wanted to say that we all make mistakes. It's learning from the mistakes that is important so we don't repeat that mistake in the future. Keep up the good work. Don't give up on Clyde. He just needs more time. 💓

It's so nice to see some cockatiel content. I have to say Clyde acts just like my rescue tiel did - from the fear of hands, the seed/millet addiction, the nipping, etc. I found my tiel in a park, someone had abandoned him, and I just wasn't skilled enough to rehab him like this but he had a safe and happy home with us until he passed. Sadly, he passed from kidney failure because of his diet which I could never convert him from fully, so this series is so helpful to me for when I adopt my next cockatiel.

My experience with my lutino tiel; I found out that he’s really conservative with foods, and cockatiels have this reputation of being picky. My bird also “randomly” chose to stop training even if he was hungry.
My bird is much more skittish than him so I thought he might be being easily “spooked out” or “too stressed” to handle new foods or new trainings. Cockatiels are quite sensitive and stubborn creatures than they might seem😂

  • @sandraerickson9978
    @sandraerickson9978 Год назад +5

When I did the diet conversion with my lutino, I converted to pellets first by mixing the new with the old, then by percentage, increasing the new pellets while decreasing the old. Maybe by decreasing the ratio of millet to the other seed would help.

Hi, JamieLeigh. You are doing a great job! Please don't give up on him. He was hurt badly in the past by a human with bare hands and bare arms. My cockatiel, Beenie, got hurt by a veterinarian assistant when he was just a baby. I witnessed this. She forced him out of his cage by grabbing him and his wing got caught on the cage and hurt his wing and he had an injury ever since. Beenie couldn't stand my bare hands and arms ever. I loved him so much and had him for 19 years. I know it will take you some time with Clyde. Please don't give up on him. Thank you. Love, Barb, Beenie spirit, Baby spirit. 🤗🤗🤗🤗🥰🥰🥰🥰

Also another thing I’ve noticed about cockatiels- (both of my birds are cockatiels) they prefer crunchy textures so I’m not surprised they don’t want scrambled eggs although I have seen breeding cockatiels eat it to regurgitate. I find they both like crunchy veggies like carrots, beets, squash, green beans, cabbage, etc.

My cockatiel will try new foods when he sees me eating it! Also, I read somewhere where cockatiels are hand shy. For the first week I had her, I would just put my hand resting on the perch near her a couple of times a day. Then pulling it out. By the end of the week, she wasn't afraid on my hands. Then I started diet conversion, and avidly watched your RUclips channel.

The same thing happened with my adult cockatiel - he came to me on an all seed diet and would mostly just eat the white millet. He has made some amazing progress with diet since he’s lived with me though. He eventually started eating some baby spinach that I sprinkled over his seeds one day and that was the moment he started showing interest in other foods. That’s when I began introducing pellets (I started with Zupreem Naturals and now he’s on Harrison’s and I’ve started to introduce some Top’s lately so he’s come a long way) and I would initially sprinkle a powdered version of the Zupreem pellets over his seeds. I did this for several weeks and eventually he decided to try some of the whole pellets. That was when I was able to start adding more pellets and less seeds to his diet. Now that he doesn’t get much seeds he eats all of his seeds and any kind of seed. You’ll get there just go slow!

Hi BirdTricks, after we got our wild-capture (from Florida) cockatiel Lucky diet converted to Topp's small bird pellets, he would still lunge and bite at hands. We followed your and others advice on training afraid birds. He learned target training and then we taught him to hop to our hand for a treat. Later, when we were more comfortable working with him in a more open area, I trained him to fly to my hand. He would land on my hand and then immediately move to my arm, so I always held his reward where he needed to step back onto my hand. We're still working with him 3 years later, but he will now fly directly to me when we open his cage. He still will only step up when he's gotten himself into a place he doesn't like (like flying into a window or dropping to the floor, but he's a loving bird. Keep going with Sunny!

My cockatiels are the most stubborn little jerks, but I love them that way. Their diet is still not great (they also refuse to fully convert), so I’ll be watching your content closely to see what I could do different. I had one for 2 years and the other for 1 year. They love to destroy my plants (non toxic of course), though. The first one was in a suboptimal environment and came from an acquaintance. The second one came from a shelter. They have both been on seed diets since forever, so whenever I see them eating some pellets, that’s a big win.

They're my first cockatiels, so I already know a lot of things I would do differently next time, but still it's been over 6 months since we got them and we've only got one of them to accept pellets. The other will scream and scream and scream until she gets seeds. It's sad, really.

We just got a cockatiel almost 2 weeks ago now and she is very stressed and scared. She was in a pet store for a year with minimal human contact so its understandable. I think she is making good progress, she now lets us get near the cage and changing the lining without hissing. She's more relaxed but I know there is a long way to go.
On thanksgiving our sun conure Eros passed in our arms. He was going to be 4 on Valentine's day. He had a metabolic disorder that the vet didn't catch and he got really sick out of no where. Not a day goes by that we don't miss him. We love him so much and its so hard. We want to give birds a loving family and the long and healthy life Eros didn't get to have. We were looking at a parrot adoption place but my mom has seen the cockatiel in the petstore for over 6 months. We still want to rescue birds in the future but we feel we did. The parrots at the rescue are very well taken care of with great diets, large cages, toys, foster homes, etc. amd this little cockatiel had a very small cage with fake windows.
Thank you birdtricks for all you do and I hope you all have a wonderful day

My oldest one will randomly attack whatever he's standing on when he's tired, even if it's an immobile object lol They sometimes bite even when stepping up, or bite even when asking for pettings. My budgies were also tough to convert. Same issue; they only ate millet. Didn't matter if the mix was 90% millet or 5% millet, they'd eat the millet and nothing else.
My original plan was to get them on a healthier seed mix, some good quality pellets, and then start introducing the fresh veggies. But they never got past eating only millet.
I recently switched up my strategy and just made chop and mixed millet by itself into it, but in a way that they could not possibly get to any of the seeds without putting the chop in their mouth too. And that was all I gave them access to. It didn't take long for them to figure out that the millet was hiding in the mash.
Now theyre eating broccoli, egg, sprouts, and all kinds of things they never touched before. I think I'm going to start replacing the millet seeds that I hide in the chop with other seeds and pellets to finally get them on a balanced healthy diet, and save the millet for training time.

For my green cheek I mixed her favorite seed mix with everything to get her to try, birdie breads, sweet potato, seasonal feedings and I felt so exhausted from it all but then I remembered the tip of pretend your eating it and make “nummy eating sounds”…. That got her attention! But she still didn’t really want to dig in so I got messy with it and actually hand fed her with my fingers as I pretended to eat her conversion concoction. I can see how hard diet changes are..I thought my hens ate their pellets, (I add two forms of food together, all organic) but bringing their food into the rodent proof coop made me realize they just pick them out or just eat around them. You can “color up” the egg yolks by adding organic paprika powder to the food, mist it a little for better sticking but not so much you make wet/mold issues, but I also think the paprika can help make a different brand or form of food look and taste more like what they’re used to..plus it’s probably just got a little bit of vitamins, fiber and oh shoot..I’m blanking on the color compound name..I think the paprika makes their eyes intensely colored, nice yolks, their feathers are good too.

My little green cheek was like this but waaayyy worse, he would draw blood every interaction. We changed his diet, his sleep and took away the cuddle hut plus i did training with him everyday now its rare he bites but still happens occasionally, i think hes become conditioned to respond with a bite for so long that occasionally he falls back to that behaviour. We have come such a long way though

A healthier seed mix... how about when i sprout the seeds? It becomes a healthy diet, right? Of course I try to get my lovebirds to eat veggies too, but they are only willing eat a tiny bit of the chop in the morning, and that's after months of convincing them to....

My adult cockatiel also won’t step up to this day and he’s actually more afraid of a sleeve than a hand but I would prefer to get him on a sleeve to prevent any lunging or biting because he is the same way with hands and stepping up. He will step up to a hand held perch but he’s still very unsure of hands. He will step up to my hand or finger with one foot to get to a treat but that’s the farthest I’ve been able to get with him. I hope you can show us more of your handling and bonding techniques with Clyde because my bird doesn’t get to come out of its cage due to me not being able to handle him and the level of fear he has around people. He’s come a long way but we still aren’t quite there yet.

I’m really punked to see the rest of clyde’s journey. I have cockatiels myself and I do struggle with this exact same behaviour. I got my first cockatiel when I was 13 and I really messed up with diet en the step up game, well I do have him on yours pellets in the morning and a way less healty seed mix in the evening.. I want to confert them on your healthy recipe but they are not having it, they also won’t take any greens but I’m offering it still throughout lunchtime. The cockatiel I’m struggeling with is a male cockatiel around 7 years old now and is a couple with my lovely girl. She is just the perfect cockatiel but my male is just ughh. I struggle so much with training them as a couple cause everywhere where he is is she and everywhere she is is he, so when she takes a flight I’m losing him too… any tips on couple/group training?
Btw I love you’ll content I’m learningg so much from you guysss ❤️

Try mincing up the eggs a bit, and also try hard boiled eggs, it’s interesting watching my hens voraciously consume hard boiled eggs as a treat. Sometimes they go for the hard boiled yolk part, other times they go for the white, but since he’s so small, maybe those big pieces of egg just didn’t look like food if he hadn’t seen it much before..plus, it’s yellowish, maybe he thought at first it was another bird!

hey guys! any tips with my cockatiel?? my cockatiel is a male, his name is mellow! he doesnt step up and i have been trying a lot lately. What he does is, he would nibble my fist (because i obviously dont want him to bite me) instead of stepping up. He isn't easily lured with a treat because he doesn't really like millet yet. Also, he barely plays with his toys. And he has a bunch! So what do I do to get him to step up without nibbling and to get him to play with toys?

Small birds eat differently from giant parrots; you should try more with leaves and leafy vegetables. My Budgies and Lovebirds love baby spinach that I cut into small pieces. My Budgies also love ruccola leaves as it reminds them of the Dandelion leaves they get in the wild. I test with different leaves and vegetables for my birds all the time. Giving them branches from eatable trees with green leaves is popular even if they are very scared of it at first. The funny thing is that my birds love baby spinach but not the bigger form that much. Maybe it is losing taste when it grows bigger.
I had a Lovebird that liked cooked baby carrots because she did get them when she was weened with food. But other Lovebirds don't like it at all. But my Amazon parrots loved them.
To get rid of biting you have to let them bite you. Most small birds like to lick your skin, especially after you have washed your hands so the skin on them got a little softer. The trick is not to pull your hand back when they bite. Instead, offer them to bite on the flat surface on top of your hand while holding it as a fist. Move the hand so they can't bite anywhere else. They will soon get tired of biting. They have difficulty getting a grip with the beak on the top of your hand. Of course, it won't work if the bird is very angry. This trick also worked with a male Amazon parrot but not so much with a female as there were too much hormones at the time. One thing to consider is that small birds also communicate with each other by biting. I have a super tame Lovebird that use to pinch me in the arm when he wants attention. He likes to sleep in my hand but can suddenly wake up and be very angry. I have seen my other Lovebirds and the Budgies also communicate this way with each other.
Good luck with Clyde. It is a nice bird.

Rescued 2 male baby cockatiels in November. One is sweet, cuddly eats great and barely makes a peep. The other is a yellow headed demon that I cannot figure out. The only time he doesn’t scream is when I hold him. When I hold him he bites me. Won’t eat anything I try ( $184.00 in fresh food tries) and thinks he runs the joint. I only cage them for sleep and I’m beside myself because of the noise. Someone on here lead me to an easier route. Vet said he was 💯 healthy- he has his brother and a budgie nearby and groomer thinks he is inbred. Meanwhile- it’s NON stop screaming!!!! Help!!!!

Respectfully, you are pushing him very hard. Changing a cockatiel’s diet can take at least weeks, if not months, and must usually be done super gradually. (I’ve done it a few times so I am speaking from experience.) Poor little guy has just had his entire world turned upside down and familiar food is probably a comfort to him.

    • @kuyuke

This. I was shocked to hear her say diet conversation should be the first thing on the agenda. Respectfully, no. Getting the new animal, any animal, settled in their new environment for *at least* a week with the food they were previously on so that they can acclimate to their new home should be first and foremost. Once they're getting more comfortable and gaining confidence that's when the diet conversation should take place, and a slow conversion at that, unless the animal is extremely receptive and showing no signs of stress (or drastic changes in their stool) in which case you can speed things along. Everything about this video made me uneasy, especially since this channel is about education.
