- In today's video, Luna the 11 year old cockatiel learns how to play with toys! If you want to teach this to your bird, grab a box of our tiny toys (all natural and hand made!) and teach your bird to target first. This will help in your success teaching this behavior you saw us work on in a masterclass hosted by @SnakeDiscovery!

Does toy playing come naturally to your bird? What natural toy part material is your bird's favorite to tear apart?
Palm leaf! And Sola wood/mahogany pods textures.
My cockatiel loves cork, mahoghany pods and balsa wood. My parrotlet enjoys cork, sola, and mahoghany pods! Cork is definitely most loved tho!
Every wood in the house and mugs
My female cockatiel could not care less about toys, my male cockatiel likes to beat up on the raffia part of the toy but it's more like a boxing match rather than a tearing thing. My galah used to tear apart anything he could get his beak around, toys, books, the house.......
String bark
This is exactly how we taught our rescues to play with toys! Good job Luna! 🦜
Loads of people seem to forget that you sometimes need to teach parrots to play with toys (just like with human children!)
Good to see another video promoting it!
I had planned to originally do a follow-up video on progress but sadly Luna passed away while in a procedure for eggbinding a couple months ago now... So glad I can come back and watch this when I miss her... 💔💖
So sorry to read about your loss. 🌈
Oh no. I'm so sorry for your loss.
We were so sad to hear of her passing, our favorite cockatiel we have ever worked with! Rest in peace Luna. ❤
Oh Luna. 💔I'm so sorry. It's always something that worries me with female birds. You're such a great owner.
Oh man. I just left a comment about her barred tail feathers 🪶 expressing concern about her health. I’m sorry; I’ll remove it. My condolences. It’s hard to lose a friend, whether human, avian, whatever. 🙏🏼 💐
Cockatiels are so fricken smart, it's ridiculous! I can't believe how fast Luna catches on to things. Truly impressive.
This cockatiel's mamma is wonderful - lucky bird.
Thank you! 💙
Luna is so sweet. What a lovely bird. She seems so relaxed and calm. 🤍
Thank you! She really was a sweety, didn't bite much at all. ❤️
I'm so glad to see Birdtricks doing a cockatiel video! My girl has been great about destroying toys since the day I got her but I just did the same kind of training with my conure and now she loves the birdtricks tiny toys!
That was a fun one. Teaching her how to play
Wow, i love the feather colors of this cockatiel
Yey!! Cockatiel video!!
This video has come at a perfect time. We unexpectedly added a new member to our flock about two weeks ago. Animal control caught a cockatiel after he had a window strike at one of the local YMCAs and brought him to the main office and no one had claimed him. We decided to foster/home him so he wasnt just stuck in an office all day. We only had experience with conures and a pionus so far, so we are still learning with him. I'm excited to teach him to play!
You guys made this look way too easy! Btb, I've never seen a tiel with such pretty coloring before.
Luna is cute.
Thank you. ❤️
Lovely kindness loving kindness for birds and people. All are amazing and such teachers you are. I respect you and love you guys so much.
Great job, "THE MORE THEY KNOW!"♥️🤣
Dang i am late but this video is rlly helpful to me since my birds are scared whenever I try to teach them how to play with toys. They do like to shred a lot but they're just scared whenever they see toys
Kobe and Paco will literally play with anything.
Hemp seeds are my favorite. So yummy.
Hemp milk is so much better than other alternative milks.
Fun fact it takes a ENTIRE gallon of water to grow one almond.
i love your bird and your video
💙
So cool keep up the good work
love your videos, I’m trying to calm my rescue Galah and he is very skittish and bites a lot he has broken skin before I tried using touch training but he attacked the stick and he is even more aggressive around food, any ideas? Keep going with these vids they help so much!!
Hello, it sounds like you are bringing in the stick too close. With aggressive birds especially, make sure you only bring the stick in so it can barely touch it with the tip of its beak. Jamie has a lot of videos on this technique but here is an old masterclass with target training an aggressive scarlet macaw.

@@jcjteeju ok thanks.
BirdTricks contact info is in the description box. Good luck 🍀👍🏻
Omg I love Luna! ❤️ and her owner was 👌 fabulous. Gives me hope that me and Putin will get better. I had to show Putin how to play and encourage foraging.
My budgie Biden was desperate for toys after only having super hard plastic ones when rescued.
My canary Chopin loves the outside of bells and anything grassy. x
You have a rare talent for choosing evocative names for your flock!
@@spiritmatter1553 haha thank you. They definitely suit them.
More videos with Doug. Woo HOO
This is the perfect video for me right now I’m struggling to get my bird to engage with toys I was actually considering doing a consultation with you guys because of it. My only problem is that she’s sick and most days I can’t even get a training session in with her and if I am able to get just a few reps in before she quits on me. So I don’t know if copying this video is possible for me. It’s sad there’s so much I wanted to teach her.....
Hii, does anybody know how this mutation of the cockatiel is called? He looks beautiful and cute :)
Luna was a whiteface normal grey mutaton. ^^
I had thought foraging would be a natural way to transition to destroying toys. I guess that is learned behaviour too!
Yep!
Loved it
Btw I have an Alexandrian female parrot and it only allows me to touch it
But she don't step up neither she is ready to get trained she is 13 now and I just want to know if there is any way I could tame and train her well
Every bird is ready. First step should be target training. You can look it up and see exactly how to do it. Also diet is super important. So make sure to avoid fruits and feed pellets and birdy chop (again you can look those up and find more Info)
What is the treat please....
She said it was hemp seeds!
@@greenapples3784 I used to b and hemp seed in a smoothie for myself but I guess I’ll use them for my Indian Ringneck. Meant for animal use in Australia any anyway.
I use a variety of treats aside from hemp seeds including sunflower seeds and millet! It's all about finding that treat ladder and what's least and most popular. :)
My vet said from hemp seeds my parrotlet has fatty liver upon xray making it hard for my parrotlet to breathe
@@eclipsestar5hello Luna’s owner. I also have a cinnamon whiteface female. Do you have any other social media? I would like to chat with you about Luna!
Oh damn, a cockatiel video here? I always felt like they were completely dismissed in this channel, was wondering if that had a reason or not honestly
Maybe for the same reason that budgies were mostly not included until they got blueberry? I’m glad to see the inclusion, my cockatiel is around twenty now, and not super mobile, but I’d like to try to teach her some pointer training.
how do u guys do this kind of stuff i had my cockatiel for one year and nothing he does not trust me at all i give him food from my hand when he will let me i wish someone could just train him for me
It takes time and patience. I had Luna for 11 years so a bond and trust was already in place. Remember, every interaction is a training session so make them all positive!
Omg I minute ago I hope you reply
