- What makes an idea or product popular? That's the big question that Derek Thompson investigates in his new book, Hit Makers. Thompson draws on stories of hits from pop culture history, from the impressionist art canon to modern Star Wars sequels. His thesis: familiarity beats novelty and distribution beats content. Along the way, he explains the media landscape that gave rise to Donald Trump, the "myth" of viral content, and why people like things that are new--but not that new.
Derek Thompson is a senior editor at The Atlantic magazine, where he writes about economics, labor markets and the media. He is a regular contributor to NPR's "Here and Now" and appears frequently on television, including CBS and MSNBC. He has appeared on numerous lists, including both Inc magazine’s and Forbes’ “30 Under 30” and Time magazine’s 140 Best Twitter Feeds. He lives in New York City.

MAYA blew my mind and I'm learning all I can about it. I'm an owner/operator of a tiny business and this helped!
This man is exceptionally good at presenting.
So Sad to know that a Video about popularity has Got only 19k views only.
We're all suckers for rhythm and rhyme💃🕺
In reply to the iPhone question. Steve Jobs was annoyed by having both a phone and an ipod in his pockets. So he combined the two. He was actually apposed to the apps. Then the app creators used concepts from the casinos to get people "addicted" to apps...
Interesting talk with lots of food for thought
that music being repetition line got me

LOVE researched books written by journalists. Another fantastic book on a similar subject is Shane Snow's SMARTCUTS.

The trend of Us vs them should be looked at in its own rite. Obviously now back in its resurgence and utilized as a tool. This ties into my other other comment. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the anomaly of the hippie movement.

OK tastes crystalized by age 30 but snot crystallized in a minute in Alaska. But can't you prove somehow someway that the music of today sucks and the music before i was born i like more and my fav is 60s to 2002 .. the year the music died for me. And movies got worse but thanks to some orginial Netflix movies i see a slight reversal. I find a lot of theory and patterns here but not a lot of solid facts. I am bored but nice try. I heard his book goes too deep into Star Wars .. I hate Star Wars movies. And Too Much into music that i don't like because i just don't fall in love with music or movies or books of my early years.

Derek you’re my favorite writer, but the evolution of names and their associated “distinctness” has more to do with the evolution of philosophical personhood IMO
Tldr: Repetition is the key.
Here save you the most boring 60 minutes of your life
god damn you must be simple
