  • This week, I worked on 4 different frames while I waited for my next job to start up.
I spent alot of this week fixing problems that some of these frames have, and sharing a not so glamorous week of carpentry

I just noticed the audio issues towards the end of the video! Everything was fine before I exported the video, I have no idea what happened but I’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again!

You may have noticed, I changed this video to private as I tried to fix the issue.
I tried re exporting the video and every time I was having the same audio issues.
I’m sorry for the silent parts in this video but I’ll be sure it doesn’t happen again

@@DaveDoesCarpentry Issue could have been mixing footage shot by your phone and gopro. Your editing software should sort this out unless you are using a basic one.

I am a carpenter from South Carolina US . 43 years exp. I am really impressed by the fall protection and scaffolding . Many subcontractor's here consider it waste of time to erect scaffolding , Only when you can't suspend yourself in mid-air . On my own jobs , I had to budget out labor for it but many others expect you to walk on some rickety 2x's with a knot in the center. We have a lot of danger here and we have to work dangerously. In all my years I have never seen Occupational Safety Inspectors on site . Aside from that . I recognize a lot of the bypassed mishaps and work. You're worth your weight in gold if you as a framer can correct mistakes that even an inspector missed . Do a walk around in every room and an experienced eye can tell where a boo boo will occur .. That crawlspace was tight !! Feel for the plumber . Here Code is 457mm minimum clearance under joist and 305mm under drops . I liked the sub-flooring . Smaller strips of T&G you don't have to fight installing . Tell the guy nailing . In the field of a sheet. Don't nail straight down . LOL. I saw the " Pagoda " on the hip jacks . Caught my eye in an instant . had to be corrected and you did it . Enjoyed a ton . Peace

I just came from watching the Site inspections channel and funnily enough this seems very similar. Good to see your taking the effort to fix the issue and prevent future problems. Good to see we still have good carpenters out there, keep up the good work.

I'm like you I can't leave stuff that's dangerously wrong.... I don't know about your local laws but in the usa we have Simpson structural joist hanger screws. They are premited to be as small as 3/4 or 1in long and that lack of nails in thoea hangers is exactly how we would remedy (with a right angle adapter) thoes impossible situations. In the past we would have to jam a joist hanger nail pushed in with a pry bar then switch to a concrete form stripper (huge pry bar) to finish off the nails. What a pain.... maybe if any of these ideas might be useful down the road. Having a solution to every problem is what makes things go easy.

The man Dave, chippy bosses should be running there eye over jobs after knocking frame up to double check it’s good .. same as building suspended slabs one missed prop could be a disaster on pour day!

definitely blame the inspector and the chippies, way to many issues to have just missed a few. I'm building with clarendon in brisbane, ill definitely be going in after hours to check the quality.

In the US, 18 inches is the minimum clearance under floor joists. That looked claustrophobic !!

You should get the DeWalt USB battery topper. Usb-c so would give you the best chance to charge or run your phone.

I'm only 4 minutes in and this scares the shit out of me as a potential home buyer. Why are there still surprises and improvisation when we've been building houses for centuries now? Moreover, why are carpenters just having a go at re-engineering things on the fly?

hey mate im 25 years old and in my final year of studying my bachelor of architecture. Ive noticed that computer life isnt for me and id much rather be on the tools building. Id like to start a carpentry apprenticeship after graduating and then eventually becoming an open class builder to not waste my architecture degree. can you offer me any advice or tips in order to prepare for getting a mature aged apprenticeship, and some advice on how to really master the art of carpentry.
    Thanks

Unfortunately quality usually falls short to speed with residential projects. Especially when you work for a company that works for a major builder. From personal experience you were dogshit if you took longer than a day to finish a job. I'm a licensed sparky that worked in this environment in NSW for 8 years. i thought i was hot shit till i went to another company and they picked apart my work. A great eye opener and humbling experience. what im getting at is your only as good as you are taught. i had no idea i was cutting corner because it was the norm to me.

  • @ianedwards9136

Someone needs their arse kicked for that roof and specially the joist hangers, even a 2nd year apprentice could work out how to in stall hangers in tight spots. the building inspector is not doing their job and shouldn't be passing off stages if a massive cock up with nailing hangers is not found. i would of got reamed if i did that or even sacked. new builds the builder/ company in charge has to stand behind it for 10 years, well in NZ they do. if a qualified chippy installed them that is worse and he should have his qual removed.
