Lewis Hamilton's outfit had nothing to do with an evil prince. His outfit was about John Ystumllyn who was abducted as a child in western Africa. He was an 18th Century gardener who, through slavery times, came across from Africa to Wales and became the first black gardener in Wales. The thorns on his outfit represent the pain caused by the slavery trade. He even had a poem stitched on the inside of his jacket that was inspired by John.
@@julia-nc6ox nope no first hand knowledge. Just been an F1 fan for 20 years so I read about Hamilton's Met Gala outfit. There's an interview of him with Vogue where he explains his outfit.
I think the sand dress deserved a mention. It was a unique interpretation ("sands of time") and execution and was unlike anything else at the Gala. I don't think it was the best of the evening, but I think it deserved discussion.
I loved the bag BUT regarding the dress: she couldn’t move in it. To me, a dress = garment = has to function while moving. It’s not a statute or sculpture. The fact she couldn’t move in it makes it an unsuccessful design.
Her dress addresses “time,” but what about “garden”? “The garden of time.” I feel like it did not fit the theme. She looked stunning though and the design was truly creative
"Sleeping Beauties" also references the collection of costumes and clothing at The Met that are not on display because they are so fragile, so they must be kept away from light and air and other elements that break down the fabric. That's moreso the reason, I think, that some people chose to wear clothes that were in various states of decay and breaking down. It's a nod to the conservation efforts that The Met undertakes to preserve these "sleeping beauties" and the idea that they are worthy of being displayed but doing so will cause them to decay even more quickly which also ties in to the "garden of time" idea.
Also, for this exhibition, the garments that are most fragile are displayed lying down in glass cases, or "glass coffins", giving the feel that they are sleeping.
and the Garden of Time refers to a novel about a garden which is slowly dying and the couple who live there will turn to stone, so the exhibit and theme are related in the idea that time will eventually destroy
@@madamedex5989 gossip is that is why this theme was selected. Preserving historic clothing, the idea that some clothing should not be wore - it is all shade at Kim K and her stunt

Hello! The theme “Garden of Time” was actually based on a short story of the same name by JG Ballard. I wonder if after reading the short story your thoughts would change. For example, what happens to the time flowers after getting picked or how people turn to stone at the end.
This comment. The theme had nothing to do with fairy tale princesses. It was about Ballard's story and of course, the Met's pieces that are too fragile to be in constant exhibition. I feel this analysis missed the mark by not acknowledging the story as well as the context in which this gala took place. Just as in the story, where the count is afraid of a mob outside his garden, people were protesting and been brutally stopped by the police just streets away from the Met. It speaks of a world of entitlement and how blind the elite are in this world.
Yes, I think so too. Especially the birds frozen in movement make sense apart from the glass like material. I also like the Cinderella reference even if it’s a reverse, since she is not going to be elevated to be the queen beloved by her people but instead her garden will fall and be ripped to pieces. Before I knew about the novel my first association was a Zen garden because of the timelessness of these gardens that still take a lot of work to seem so perfect. That’s why I love Luciana Damons dress. The pure white, the simple shape, the geometrical bust that reminds me of the rake patterns. I think it’s great and not boring at all.
John Ystumllyn was not an evil prince. He was an 8 year old child kidnaped from Africa who grew up in Cymru/Wales and became a gardner. A couple of years ago he was comemorated with a named rose . That was the story refrenced by the thorn necklace which encapsulated the past as well as the gardens he created. We are proud of him here.
I liked Tyla’s sandclock dress, and also Sabrina Hamilton’s Dali’s clock inspired dress and the fractured garden of Lauren Sanchez. My favorite was the cristal fountain of the sleeping beauty of Elle Fanning.
I looked up Chloe Sevigny's dress and it said it was also embroidered w/ hair flowers inspired by Victorian “mourning hair,” which was made from the hair of deceased loved ones, so that leans even more toward the theme of Garden of Time
I agree with you Justine, it's just outrageous that the designer or who made the creations and designs are not acknowledged at all!! I hope more people will appeal to Vogue and Anna Wintour that their work should be recognised! Great video as always ❤
Hi, Justine! Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. I liked Tyla's look who was, in fact ,one of the few who focused on "time" part of the theme. Her outfit was representing the sands of time and I liked the little touches like hourglass bag and makeup on her shoulder. I also liked Dove Cameron's look because they really nailed the "deconstructed dress"- that was just a well crafted piece and it fit the theme. I can't say really how well Rebeca Hall's look fit the theme because she looked like water nymph, like she just came out from the set of Midsummer Night's Dream, but she always puts an effort.
My favourites are Balmain's incredible gowns: the icy princess with the birds, and the sand of time. So stunning, gorgeous and enchanting. Such stunning achievements!
Just regarding to the theme, I think you missed sth here - or didn't explain it that good this time. It isn't about princesses. Sleeping beauties & reawakening fashion referred to the preservation of antique garments, the battle against their inevidable decay AND old techniques. Yes, HauteLeMode did a fantastic and thorough explanation of all the elements of the theme. I haven't seen Abby Cox's take on it, but will check it out now.
@@desd111 Abby's take is very focused on the historical and corsetry aspects of the night, rather than from a pure fashion sense. She examines people's reactions to the tightlacing that Kim Kardashian exhibited in her dress, and why it got so much more attention from people, when there were something like 40 other celebrities also wearing corsets, then places that within the context of the debate over corsets & tightlacing that has been stretching back centuries. A very different perspective to that of Justine, but just as appreciated I think. They have *very* different perspectives on Chloe Sevigny, for example.
Very cool video. The day after the Gala I just flipped through the photos in the NYT, but I kinda didn't know what I was looking at. Thank you for the explainer! (Also, your skin and makeup are especially gorgeous today! 😍)
I think a lot of attendees, designers, and commenters seem to be unaware that “The Garden of Time” is a short story. It’s about this wealthy count and countess using magical flowers to slow down time to they can continue living in luxury, but they are completely ignorant to the fact that the world around them is suffering, and that they are prolonging that suffering in order to enjoy their own wealth. To me, the theme mocks people struggling in this horrible economy. As we peasants are out here struggling to buy groceries and pay our bills, these celebrities paid $75,000/head to be there and are wearing millions of dollars worth of clothing and jewelry. -_- I feel like Anna Wintour should have read the room… of course, she probably did and thought it would be fun to make a joke of the very people who read her magazine and watch this event.
I know it was expected but my favorite was Elle Fanning as she was Sleep Beauty in the malificent movies. Also with the solid construction of the dress you could say it nods to the moment in The Garden of Time short story when the duchess is transforming into a statue
Justine, thank you for a great review and I agree, Chloe Sevigny totally got the assignment. Hands down winner. Thank you also for highlighting the designers behind the outfits.
Ugbad Abdi, Mindy Kaling, and Iris Law had my three favorite outfits, in no particular order. I also noticed how Iris Law’s hairstyle matched her dress really well.
Thank you Justine. This was fabulous. I always love your review of these galas. Truly. Anything you share about fashion, your home Reno’s. etc. because of your ethics that you use in your personal life and professional life. I have followed you for years. And I will never forget the first video of yours. It changed my course in life completely to strive for ethical fashion, quality over quantity etc. cheers Raylene
Penelope Cruz stole the show for me. She looked like she had been taken straight out of 1890 england as the queen of england in her mourning gowns. It was intricate, historical, and really hit that delicate combination between flowers in a garden, and time.
1:30 Actually, sleeping beauties is a term referring to the lost and forgetten fashion houses, designers or techniques;waiting to be revitalized. Like schiaparelli has been for the last 10 years. Thus, garden of time most probably refers to the collection of artifacts (the flowrs) representing such sleeping beauties let it be a sewing technique, a form, a fitting, a colour palette etc.( Kylie Jenner's corseted look might be an example of such sleeping beauty yet to be revive and become popular some day)
I appreciate you for explaining the details of what the theme really meant! I saw many dresses having only flowers and loved them for their elegance and style but this analysis is a better perspective.
As always, Justine Leconte presents us with relevant information free of googly-eyed Hollywood adoration. A very refreshing, educational video with the benefit of professionally experienced eyes and mentally and emotionally mature insights. Ah, the glories of a deep and well-rounded education! Thank you Justine Leconte!
I want to start with how much I love this video with Justine every year. It’s tradition now! Gotta mention Tyla because she was literally the sands of time. Lana del Ray looked amazing. I completely agree with you about Chloe Sevingy. Her dress was spot on for me as well. Zendaya tied with Chloe though, at least for me. I liked the garden she wore and the hummingbird at her neck was gorgeous. I loved how it was a part of the dress but also the jewelry. Lena Malfouf was also one of my favorites of the night. She looked so beautiful.
I'm glad you included so many outfits that never showed up on any other video I've seen. There was one stunning dress that I've only seen once. I'm sorry I can't remember who wore it or the designer, but it had butterflies on her arms that moved. The dress was a flower and the woman wearing it is gorgeous.
Honestly i feel like Gigi's dress is underrated. For me I see an old petty coat shape from older fashion, With it being undressed to be a more modern dress, like a new blooming from the old. Idk I see something more poetic and deep in it that I feel people have missed
I agree! I've seen a lot of negative commentary about that dress but I thought it was so beautiful, thematically appropriate with the idea of deconstructed tailoring, fresh garden colors, and a vintage touch with her hairstyling.
I actually loved her dress in part for how it fit with the short story ('The Garden of Time') that the theme was based on. I really loved *all* the looks that had stark black and white presence, representing the stoic march of time, the inevitability of life's hardships, the contrast between the Count on the hill and the 'rabble' of people below, etc. It gave me so much to think about, and question - are the brilliant, beautiful colors of the garden the reality, or is the inescapable black and white background the reality? Just so much to dig into here that tugs at my heart.
I liked your video very much and I think you now have a better understanding how the theme could have been fairly misinterpreted, as you kind of misunderstood the theme too :) as some of the comments below can explain better than me, so I won’t. But I love your eye and your vast knowledge of fashion and techniques and still found this delightful! And thanks for giving the designers the recognition they deserve. I know these videos are a lot of work and research for you but if you are moved to do a part 2 on the met with the full understanding of the theme, and after reading the story, I would really love to see another one!!!
I particularly liked Coleman Domingo's attire, designed by Willy Chavvaria. It was a respectful nod to the Met Gala outfits worn by Chadwick Boseman & Andre' Leon Talley (both fairly recently deceased) at past galas. That tuxedo cape was stunning!
Loved your review; completely on point. If you hadn't pointed out Dilaria Findikoglu, I don't think I would have seen her creation. I looked her up and I was very excited by her work. Thank you!! I don't think that the general public (here in North America) really appreciates artists. The product seems to be completely divorced from the artist, as you mentioned. It seems that people think artists either "have it" or not. There doesn't seem to be an understanding that it takes hard work, a good education and lots of experience for an artist, as much as any other professional, to get to the top of their game. Thank you for your point of view, education, experience and hard work!
Disagree with you on Jennifer Lopez: her dress matches garden of time really well (the short story that was the inspiration). In the story the characters briefly stop impending doom by breaking off glass flowers. Her dress looks like a glass flower.
The connected themes were indeed much more deep than fairy tales and flowers. The deeper meaning and the connection between the two must have been obvious to the designers preparing outfits for the event. Both with the time destroying beautiful creations (like garments) and eventually turning them into dust as the exhibit highlights , and how in the story a hopeless fight to hold of time ( with the crystal flowers) to preserve something beautiful (their garden), and then eventually in the end they turned into stone (and dust one day). The relation is quite poetic. And I really loved Hamiltons outfit in that context, since we all know that most of these beautiful gardens were created and maintained by others than those who enjoyed them. Highlighting this element of history, not only was he perfectly on theme, he highlighted a specific persons story and reminded everyone to remember the past and the wrongdoings committed. The light/dark colour associating with good/evil, not good. While JLo's dress was a miss in my view for other reasons, she did channel the crystal flower from the story...so kind of on theme.
New subscriber based on this review. Love a designer's perspective. And also that you didn't laboriously go through the looks one by one but grouped them. And really agree with your last comment - when I google "red carpet" to take a look at who wore what, if the designers names aren't featured I automatically search for another web page
My favorite look was Del Core worn by Eiza Gonzalez. So delicate. It truly looked like it was made of flower petals and the color on her was perfection. It looked like a true collaboration between celebrity and designer. I appreciate the thought and creativity of the designs you mentioned as well. But I found myself floored by just how beautiful both she and the dress were together. Gestalt.
I really think Alia Bhatt's sari deserved a mention. A masterpiece in craftsmanship and a timeless garment. The sari as a garment is more that 3000 years old@@Anastasia_whiteW
The Melting Flower of Time which was Mindy Kaling's dress was my favorite for many reasons. I work in the Akashic Records with past lives and the folding of timelines and experiences is what I see represented here. I didn't see it as a just flower per se, but more the undulation of all of time creating something beautiful as a whole. I also love that she collaborated with Indian designers for both dress and jewelry.
Thank you for featuring Elle Fanning's dress, I hadn't seen it before even though I had looked at photos from the event from a few different resources. Hers was the best in my opinion! Some of the other dresses may have nailed the brief even more creatively but I think it's just as important to make a garment that's actually flattering. The articles I had read also didn't mention the fairytale princess aspect of the brief, only "garden of time".
THIS is the MET Gala review I've been waiting for, and IMO the one that matters!! My Top 5 from the women: Elle Fanning's birds with cascading water by Balmain; Mindy Kaling's blooming flower by Guarav Gupta; Mona Patel's kinetic butterfly dress by Iris Van Herpen; Tyla sands of time by Balmain; and Lana Del Rey's decaying garden by Alexander McQueen. My Top 5 from the men are exactly the same as your, Justine! They understood the assignment. As the saying goes. 😂
I loved all the choices made by Justine. I would like to add: Keke Palmer in Marc Jacobs (both Gala and Exhibit themes), Charli XCX in Marni (both Gala and Exhibit themes), Tyla in Balmain (both Gala and Exhibit themes-->dress actually made of sand) and Dan Levy in Dia Dipasupil (Gala theme). Honorable Mention as they looked adorable together along with taking a reference from both themes, I would like to add, Hannah Bagshawe and Eddie Redmayne in custom Steve O Smith.
I absolutely love your analysis of the garments and why you rate them as you do. I see them differently and appreciate them more after viewing this video! And all of your videos!👍👍👍
Without knowing what it was supposed to be, I have to say Mindy Kaling's outfit to me looked like a sand storm, which made me interpret it as Sands Of Time. :)
I like Chloe Sevigny for the garment's details like the trapunto around the hem of the upper skirt and for the hairstyle, too. Small braids shaped like flowers, etc.
Dear Justine same as for you I immediately liked the same outfit. So beatifful and so particular....Take care and wish you all the best. I am an old fan of yours..

I agree that designs should be an expression of the theme & their understanding of it. Love the well thought out creations-especially the last one. What did you think of the "sand" dress?
My personal favorite was the sand dress from Balkan worn by Tyla. It was the first one I didn’t scroll past. I just loved the texture. Yeah… maybe it’s s bit on the nose, but I love the play on materials that are not too expected for an item (like that cup made out of fur)

Best overview of this event! I enjoyed your thorough critique and inclusion of so many great outfits that I hadn’t seen anywhere else. Thank you
Ugbad Abdi, Mindy Kaling, and Iris Law had my three favorite outfits, in no particular order.
I think that you had the best interpretations of these gowns. Many reviewers just didn’t get the artistry or the vision of the designer.
Amazing show. Thank you for your commentary.
Ahh! You forgot Mona Patel! She was by far the most stunning one the carpet and on theme ! Loved Tyla too
1:30 Actually, sleeping beauties is a term referring to the lost and forgetten fashion houses, designers or techniques;waiting to be revitalized. Like schiaparelli has been for the last 10 years. Thus, garden of time most probably refers to the collection of artifacts (the flowrs) representing such sleeping beauties let it be a sewing technique, a form, a fitting, a colour palette etc.( Kylie Jenner's corseted look might be an example of such sleeping beauty yet to be revive and become popular some day)
Garden of time refers to the JG Ballard novel
Which touches on the theme of the inexorable effect of time and progress, despite efforts to slow it down.
Callot Soeurs. Madeleine Vionette. Madame Gres. Just to name a few.
Really? It presented misinformation or simply a lack of effort
@@themaybeso6117 Maybe not.
That was Mona Patel in a Iris van Herpen dress.
@@karolinealexandrakuipers7908Yes, I'm surprised it's not in this video. Should have been at the top level of stars, imho.
Yes Mona Patel best dressed hands down!
It was Mona Patel
My personal fave is that of SJP’s and the 2nd outfit of Zendaya
Honestly i feel like Gigi's dress is underrated.
For me I see an old petty coat shape from older fashion,
With it being undressed to be a more modern dress, like a new blooming from the old.
Idk I see something more poetic and deep in it that I feel people have missed
I liked her hair with her dress as well.
I love hearing your interpretation. I really enjoyed this video!
I’m so proud of the Turkish designer Dilara Fındıkoğlu❤🇹🇷🧚🏻♀️🧚🏻🧚🏻♂️ And thanks for rating the dresses in an order, Justine❤
My favorite is Mindy Kaling's dress - very dynamic and stunning work of art.
I think you’re the first channel I’ve seen talk about the theme in terms of old techniques for making clothes
Thank you for acknowledging men in this wonderful video! All I saw were women and it's nice you point out representation.
Couldn't care less for met gala but I always watch and enjoy your videos on it! Top quality 👌
love it. always love your take on these events
Tyla's dress was one of the best for me, she focused on the time aspect, and it looks so well done.
My favorite was the blue gown in the evil princess grouping.
that was a lovely review. thank you.
Hey! Congrats on 1M I don’t know how I missed that 🤗
I missed that too! Thank you for bringing that to our attention! Congratulations to Justine!! Well deserved.
Tyla! Her outfit was a great interpretation of time
Justine, where did you get your top? It looks really really good
New subscriber based on this review.
Gestalt.
I really like Tyla’s sand dress and Mona Patel’s butterfly dress. You missed them both.
yess!!
Meh the sand dress was boring. It's just sand stuck to the dress.
I really think Alia Bhatt's sari deserved a mention. A masterpiece in craftsmanship and a timeless garment. The sari as a garment is more that 3000 years old@@Anastasia_whiteW
Sabyasachi the designer should have been mentioned -both for his design and his own costume.
Was waiting on your analysis with bated breath. Thank you for explaining your opinion with exceptional clarity and insight. ❤
Thank you for sharing your favorite getup. Elle Fanning and Jessica parker were my favorite . au revoir!
the butterfly was the best - so fragile a creature, so lovely a promise of spring, delight on the wing
YAY!!!! finally. was looking forward to this.
Excellent choices. Additionally, Elle and Mindy looked extraordinarily beautiful in their dresses.
Honorable Mention as they looked adorable together along with taking a reference from both themes, I would like to add, Hannah Bagshawe and Eddie Redmayne in custom Steve O Smith.
the theme is the title of a dystopian short story, no fairytale
I absolutely love your analysis of the garments and why you rate them as you do. I see them differently and appreciate them more after viewing this video! And all of your videos!👍👍👍
Thumbs way up! Now I understand all the hoopla. Great job, Justine
I agree with your favorite design. It was wonderfyl.
Glad to see Wisdom on your list
Without knowing what it was supposed to be, I have to say Mindy Kaling's outfit to me looked like a sand storm, which made me interpret it as Sands Of Time. :)
I like Chloe Sevigny for the garment's details like the trapunto around the hem of the upper skirt and for the hairstyle, too. Small braids shaped like flowers, etc.
Garden of time is a story by JG Ballard. You should read the story before commenting on the theme
Dear Justine same as for you I immediately liked the same outfit. So beatifful and so particular....Take care and wish you all the best. I am an old fan of yours..
Love your artistic impressions & explainations. Your eyes are trained to see details that are missed. As a home sewer, I love your mentions of hand sewing, tailoring & other parts of garment construction. Thank you for explaining the esthetic viewpoints expressed by the designers. I agree that designs should be an expression of the theme & their understanding of it. Love the well thought out creations-especially the last one. What did you think of the "sand" dress?
I absolutely agree with you.
excellent video! thanks! ❤
I loved Phoebe Dynevors look. I know it is a little bit of flower and sleeping beauty, but I think it is soft and beautifull 😍
I want your sweater 🥰
Yes: Reawakening & Time; and yes, omitting the designers is scandalous. Your commentary is always so intelligent and considered.
My personal favorite was the sand dress from Balkan worn by Tyla. It was the first one I didn’t scroll past. I just loved the texture. Yeah… maybe it’s s bit on the nose, but I love the play on materials that are not too expected for an item (like that cup made out of fur)
My favourite was Mona Patel wearing dress with mechanical flowers, stunning silhouette! ❤ by Iris Van Harpen
Hi Justine, love your commentary as always and loved that your favorite was a woman Turkish designer :) pronunciation needs some work but appreciate that you tried !!
Love your videos
