The 2022 Dodge Durango R/T Is A V8 Muscle Car Disguised As A 3-Row Family SUV

  • The #DodgeDurango is old, but it hasn't stopped #Dodge from selling them to enthusiasts looking for more space but don't want to give up the #MuscleCar feel of their Challenger/Charger. This 2022 #DurangoRT has the same 5.7L #HEMI V8 making 360 HP paired to an 8-speed AT and AWD. The sound from the exhaust has a mean growl thanks to the Tow-N-Go package on this particular #DestroyerGray tester. Just be ready to pay that pretty penny at the pump for those lovely V8 noises.

Want to keep driving a muscle car but need seating for 7 people? The Durango is still one of the only family SUV's out there that tows and drives like a muscle car. Yes, it's getting old, but we were enjoying our time in this vehicle. Do you think Dodge will redesign this model soon, or discontinue it entirely? We're not sure ourselves.

Can keep.the interior layout with a slight bigger and brighter screen.
If they can work magic with the exhaust then we will have a winner

    A few corrections. I own both a 2019 regular R/T Durango and a 2021 R/T Plus (Tow n Go).
First off: both have 24.5 gallon tanks, not 22.
Secondly, the central air scoop IS functional as are the two extractors.
Thirdly, his highway MPG is significantly less than I obtain at 65 MPH. For one thing, using cruise control on the highway helps MPG because the "brains" of the cruise control is optimized to keep the 5.7 L engine in four-cylinder mode rather than have it continuously activating/deactivation displacement as happens when you disengage the cruise control.
Mind you, there is a steep MPG price to pay with the R/T Plus compared to the R/T despite them having the same 5.7 liter V8.
    Difference 1: Transfer case
The regular R/T uses an "on-demand" AWD drivetrain. MY 2019 rides as a RWD car except in snow, when AWD engages. On dry pavement, propulsion from just the rear axle is significantly more fuel efficient. In fact, the regular R/T with the V8 can get just about the same MPG highway as the Pentastar 6 cylinder! The difference is more pronounced around town, however.
The R/T Plus uses the SRT's full-time AWD transfer case. This allows for better cornering at speed. But the downside is a significant hit to MPG on the highway.
    Difference 2: Tires
The regular R/T rides on narrower Bridgestone Ecopia tires that inflate to a firm 36 PSI with a tread that is optimized for MPG rather than grip. Dodge did this to help the fleet-wide MPG numbers.
The R/T Plus uses wider Pirelli Scorpion Zero performance rubber at 33 PSI with a flatter footprint for grip. These tires are a bit softer and that also lowers MPG compared to the Bridgestones. Unsprung weight is higher in the Tow n Go (as it is on the SRT and Hellcat) due to the tires, the wheels and the heavier calipers and rotors. This hurts MPG on uneven surfaces.
    Difference 3: Weight
The R/T Plus is somewhat heavier because it is (essentially) an SRT just with the R/T's engine
    Difference 4: Differential
The R/T Plus uses the SRT's true limited-slip differential whereas the XT, GT, R/T and Citadel Durangos use a simulated limited-slip differential achieved using the ABS brake computer. This affects MPG as well.
As for his comments about firmness of the ride:
The regular R/T has a firm ride at all times. It is not adjustable. Dodge figures that anyone wanting a more supple suspension would opt for the more forgiving Citadel trim instead.
The R/T Plus shares the SRT's adaptable suspension. In regular cruise/ECO, the R/T Plus has a softer ride than the regular R/T. However, if you switch to Sport Mode or Track Mode on the R/T Plus, the suspension becomes downright stiff... firmer than that of the regular R/T.
It has been my experience that the R/T Plus is more forgiving of potholes than my regular R/T in city driving, as ironic as that sounds.
For anyone who's interested: at 55 MPH with cruise control activated, the regular R/T can get an honest 29 MPG. The best I've been able to get from the Tow n Go is 25.5 MPG at 55.
Keep in mind, the Durango is a blunt instrument with a big cross section. So MPG drops precipitously as you drive faster. At 70 MPH, my regular R/T drops to about 23 MPG. My Tow n Go drops to about 20.5 MPG. I do have the roof rails on both vehicles.

I also noticed that (once hot) the tire pressures reached 40 PSI. I'm wondering if the tire pressure was responsible.

Could you have said "old" another 50 times, perhaps? Who cares if it's not as new as a Telluride when you can tow twice as much and hit 60 in under 6 seconds (among other things)? When it's "satisfying to drive," "really comfortable," and "feels special," that kinda invalidates all of the "incredibly old" aspersions.

The Durango 5.7 Tow no Go is perhaps one of the best kept secrets in the midsize class. You get the 392 suspension and wheel setup, the better rear axle, heavy duty oil and trans cooling, and the Bilstein shocks. All of which offers great handling and ride control, plus top of the heap towing. Factoring in up to date tech(you can't even get wireless Carplay on the darling of the class, the Telluride SX-L), great interior space, and overall value, it is a compelling vehicle. The Durango has always been unique since 1999 because its always been larger than a midsize, smaller than an all out full-size.
Interesting to see this called "dated" multiple times because I just looked at the largest offerings in this class: Atlas, Traverse, Telluride/Palisade, and GC-L. Obviously the GC-L is the new kid on the block but damn costly. The H/K twins are good, and the loaded Palisade's interior is certainly more premium. But the Chevy and Atlas are far newer and feel far more dated, especially the Chevy.
As to the price, the full story needs to be told. You need NOT get the the Tow n' Go setup to get the Hemi. If you do get TnG, one must also remember that version also includes Brembo brakes that would also be about $3500 alone if bought aftermarket, in addition to electronic dampers and other goodies. Its a bit more involved that just being "too expensive". Also, V8 Durangos hold value incredibly well. Ask Alex On Autos on getting $43K for his 2018 Durango.

I’ve test driven all of the Durango competitors you mentioned and I wouldn’t buy any of them over it. It has the best ride quality, looks, stereo (especially the 6 standard or 9 speaker Alpine. Most well tuned and nicely engineered base plus surround sound system I’ve heard in a vehicle in its class by far) and ride height by comparison. I test drove the Telluride and I think it’s overrated. The ride height is much lower, the fake polished aluminum that’s really plastic looks cheap and the base trim faux leather in the Telluride has the weirdest/cheap tactile feel to me. The thing I like about the Durango is the interior ergonomics. Everything is well placed, reachable and even the hooks on the back of the seat map pockets are convenient so bags don’t roll around the interior.

Newer Durango’s start at 50k as well as other brands so I’m lucky in that sense to have this beast paid off!!! Did I mention the looks still turns heads ?? The benefit of the GT plus in 2020 was the advanced cooling, suspension and built in trailer hitch and braking. Additionally we got the bench adding in the extra seat, and has every option the RT has minus the Hemi. Ended up a great deal with gas prices and every bell and whistle the RT has.

I had the v6 rallye charger prior and liked it but being in Alaska on those snow days I didn't care for it. I honestly missed the v8 sound as well and mine has the DVD and captain's chairs which I don't mind. I've learned to not get irritated with the "dated" comments because I own an 05 nissan titan and for me my 17' durango definitely doesn't feel dated. As of 2022, it only has 45,000 miles on it. The original 5.7L HEMI V8 is still going strong. Plus, it still has the original tires from the factory that are still going strong as well. However, there will eventually come a time where all the original tires will need to be replaced. The car was driven locally through out most of 11 years of it's life. The only time we'd take the car on longer drives is if we're going on vacation trips. 2011 was a new redesign for the Durango as it goes into it's 3rd generation. The 1st generation was made from 1998 to 2003. The 2nd generation was made from 2004 to 2009. There are no 2010 year models. The 3rd generation started in 2011 and it's still going on today. The 3rd generation has lasted much longer than the first two generations.

I’ve been waiting for this video.
I was helping a family member choose a replacement for her 17 Pacifica Limited, I was looking into the R/T but changed my mind since the fuel economy is terrible.
I know the V6 isn’t the choice to choose for the Durango, but the torque in the third gen V6 was improved and I definitely notice it more in the Durango than in the Pacifica.
At the end of the day I chose a GT Plus with every option except the second-row entertainment system. Skip that. So far we’ve gotten 26.5mpg mainly on the highway which is pretty close to what we’ve gotten in the Pacifica and the lowest I got was 13.5mpg.
Compared to filling up her Pacifica which was around $60-65, the Durango in our case cost around $108-110 which is way more but it does last awhile if you’re not in Sport mode. I can’t imagine having a SRT or even a RT and paying for fuel over a month.
