• The Parisian cultural élite on the 1870’s was swept off its feet by Stéphane Mallarmé’s heavily symbolic and musically suggestive poetic evocation of the faun.
Debussy was much impressed by Mallarmé, and by 1892 at the latest he had conceived the idea of composing a Prélude, Interlude et Paraphrase based, of the celebrated faun poem.
This work was met with success despite the fact that it was supposed to sound very "modern" to Parisian concert goers, employing a totally innovative musical diction and paving the way for a new era.
