I feel you. Although I am a Malay, I do feel proud of the Peranakan community on the integration of the Malay culture into the Peranakan community, hence it is very easy for the two to communicate and agree with each other. Similarly, due to modernization, the Malay culture, too, suffer a bad erosion. We both need to ensure our traditions continue for the generations to come.
For me I love to cook, so I am picking up all the Malay / Peranakan cuisine, including making talams. I am lucky to stay with my grandmother who teaches me all the important techniques in cooking Malay / Peranakan dishes. My mom is good at making kuih talam, so I pick up the skills and techniques from her.

First time today in month of Autumn fest September 2024 watching this documentary made 8 yrs ago (?) As a history buff got me so excited. Luv it!❤ Big Q. A comment below suggests the Baba Nyonya unique ethnicity (one&only) should be recognised as Malaysia's culture heritage by UNESCO, have our govt done it? Besides Melaka city, has our beloved BabaNyonya ethnic community been bestowed the deserving recognition as among the world culture heritage status? Anyone can confirm, s'il vous plaît? Strangely, in early days of admittedly, 🤭my first love 8 yr of relationship, my boyfriend from high school days, was a tall Baba who didn't speak a word of Chinese. I was more slightly fluent than him😂. One of my grandmas (figure that out😅) was a very diminutive, shrill voice, tobacco-chewing, 'sentil'?, Chinese nyonya, calling her lovingly, Nek Aji. I was quite ''manja" with her every time family school hols visited her in Melaka. Back tgen I like to fondle "gentel-gentel' her forearm sagging soft muscle when seated cuddled next to her. She'd smiled and chuckled at my naughty manja antics. Albeit beautiful memories and nostalgic reminiscent; miss her so much and those childhood carefree babanyonya ambience of those days in the 60s.😔

My grandmother died when I was around 6 years old. I remember she wore the kebaya, sarong, some of the simple jewelry, so did her sister. I don't remember we had much Nyoya food growing up because we were poor. It must be a trendy thing to wear the kebaya during that period? I hope they will preserve all the heritage for future generation to understand this special inter racial culture.
I visited the Baba Nyoya heritage house in Penang in 2011, it was a stunning house, I will visit it again in the near future. I love the cuisine, but it was hard to keep my diet.

Sebab dahulu aktivitas antara negeri-negeri selat (terutama Singapura) dengan Batavia sangat intens sehingga budaya peranakan Cina Indonesia pun dibawa pula ke negeri-negeri selat, termasuk Kebaya Encim yang akhirnya menjadi mode baru peranakan Cina menggantikan model baju kurung asli peranakan Cina Malaka.

Malays never wear kebaya, while Baba Nyonya (Chinese) in Singapore and Malaysia wear kebaya, I am sure their ancestors were immigrants from Java. Proof that Chinese and Malays never mixed, even for a second, they adopted the clothes of the Dutch colonialists' acculturation with the native Javanese. The position of Chinese descendants now remains as colonizers of the native Malay land, there is no cultural acculturation and cooperation with the native Malays. Singapore is the land of the Malays, not the land of India and China,What about the land of Baba Nyonya? They are descendants of Indonesian Chinese immigrants, not native Singaporeans and Malaysians.

I am not so familiar with any close friends or relatives that linked to the peranakan heritage. But to ponder upon your question, i think the most obvious difference is the strongly heritaged culture and traditions that for hundreds of years characteristically shaped and gives the quality of weight to the peranakans compared to other modern cross-race marriages. This beautifying concepts of learning genealogy i think also applies for other historically and traditionally shaped communities throughout the world. So that we know better and appreciate our existence better through history's own timeline.

I'm a peranakan Indian (Melaka Chetti) and peranakan Chinese (Baba Nyonya) mixed. As explained by my family, before Merdeka, the marriage between the Malays and non-Malays does not need conversion to Islam. For example, in the Melaka Chetti community, we had aunties who are Malays married to a Indian men. They still maintain their Malay name. We called them like Ateh (aunty in Tamil) Tijah, Mami Jarah, Mama Bukit etc. But after Merdeka, it was a law that when a Muslim marries a non-Muslim, they must convert to Islam. So the Peranakan adopts the men's religion but follows the mother's culture and tradition. Macam Tu lah my mother kasi crita.

Regarding your friends case, you should read more about perlembagaan malaysia, it states that anyone who practice malay culture and a muslim can be considered as malay. Your friend’s parents or ancestors might claim to be malay and that’s how they can be bumiputera. About baba and nyonya, I believed they are eligible to earn bumiputera but the problem is the latest/young baba n nyonya generation prefer to call themeselves as chinese, and practice more chinese culture than malay culture side.
