This is still my favorite of the Dick Tracy movies, mostly because of the great Boris Karloff and the fact that Ralph Byrd, still the definitive Tracy after all these years, is back. I never bought Morgan Conway in the role, and Warren Beatty ... is really an acquired taste. He's fine, but he's not Dick Tracy, IMO.
More than the other films in the series, this movie plays the Tracy name game: Melody the piano player, X-Ray, L.E. Thal, I.M. Learned, and, of course, Gruesome. As always, Karloff is wonderful, very much underplaying Gruesome and not going overboard. He knows what kind of movie he's in, and he's having fun. Sure, it's typecasting (as even the movie knows), but it works. My favorite in-joke in the film is when Melody takes Gruesome to meet "the Doctor."
    ( 3:22 )
X-Ray: What is your friend's name?
    Melody: Gruesome.
    X-Ray: Isn't he?
    😂😂😂
What always fascinates me with the Tracy films is you don't get the over-the-top, Bond villain-types. Cueball and Gruesome are probably the closest we get to traditional deformed Tracy villains, and they're remarkably low achieving. Most of the time, the bad guys are just ambitious lugs who luck into a scheme or a crazy idea that will make them rich. That's their only motivation, and, really, that's just refreshing. And, perhaps because of that, the comic relief moments actually work. The scene in the bank just had me laughing. Even Pat doesn't outdo his welcome, which I can't always say about the intentional comic relief. I just enjoyed this film, and it's always great coming back to watch it again.

I adore the old movies, so much more quality and manners, and just so right, no need to be over the top with aggression, as is the case today, drawing people in
