Volkswagen California: A New Era for Hybrid Powertrain Minivans
The news everyone has been waiting for is now a reality. Volkswagen has broken the silence and revealed its most recent and ambitious project. If you're familiar with the previous models, prepare yourself for something completely different. Although this vehicle is presented as a concept, it is largely a preview of what Volkswagen will bring to the European market in 2024.
But let's get to the point. The major innovation is the inclusion of a second sliding door on the left side of the van. Why is this a big step forward? Previous versions used to have the kitchen on a fixed side of the vehicle. Although this arrangement is maintained in the T7 California Concept, the engineering behind this design has allowed for the creation of a corridor behind the front seats. This means that you can now access the induction kitchen, sink, refrigerator, and drawers from both the outside and the inside of the van.
The addition of this second door redefines the T7 California as a three-zone vehicle. What does this mean? Basically, each zone is designed for a different functionality, enhancing versatility and the travel experience in all aspects. From the right side, you'll have an ideal space for daily tasks, while on weekends this area transforms into a tent with an extendable awning. At the other end, you can enjoy a perfectly adapted outdoor space for cooking and dining.
Zone two is the nerve center of the T7 Volkswagen California. Here, you'll find a kitchen intelligently positioned between front seats that rotate 180 degrees and a rear bench that converts into a bed. This space is complemented by an elevatable aluminum roof, LED lights, and USB connections, all controlled from a multi-functional tablet.
Another innovation is its plug-in hybrid propulsion system, a first in the California family. Although Volkswagen is keeping the details under wraps, they do affirm that there will be options for engines running purely on gasoline or diesel, in addition to the hybrid, when the vehicle goes into production in 2024.
