I read a comment on a Gojira video that sums them up perfectly. It essentially said that Gojira is like wine. The first time you try it, it tastes bitter, but there's enough of a hook to make you try it again. Before you know it you are a full on connoisseur. Just like you, it was the vocals that initially put me off, but I persevered, and I have been richly rewarded for sticking with them. I am now a fully fledged member of the cult of Gojira.
I like it. Another favorite of mine that I read somewhere is that Gojira can only be described as having elements of death metal because no one has coined the term "life metal" yet. I love the juxtaposition of the spiritual and environmental themes and the beauty of life with the crushing heaviness of this band.
Vacuity doesn't get enough love from these reaction vids imo, the ones that do react to it do the music video which happens too quick for me. You gotta listen to the drone riff before the vocals kick in.
Try Flying Whales next, Jim!! Joe Duplantier has a really good vocal style for easing into the heavier stuff. It's introductory but also heavy enough to be loved by metal enthusiasts. Mario Duplantier is one of the most amazing metal drummers out there and i'm happy you can pick out his rhythms. Good stuff!
Nice song choice to turn around your thoughts on Gojira. They are an amazing band. Jim, after getting a better understanding of what it is that you like (very similar to my own tastes)...The next time you try Gojira, I think you would really like the song "Flying Whales". I really enjoy your channel...God bless!
You. Get. It. How absolutely beautiful to watch your eyes being opened to the incredible perfectness that Gojira is. So happy for you Jim, truly. Welcome to the world of Gojira fanatics! They are in my opinion the best band out there, period.😊
Pronounced Gojeera :) If you want more, then *_Gojira - Art Of Dying_* is an obligatory song to check out! Just consider the immensity of the Gojira, Opeth and Devin Townsend lineup at Red Rocks btw
I really believe Gojira is the kind of band that focuses on making good ALBUMS. The songs are good individually, but take on a whole other level when you listen to the album front to back. That's why I really love Global Warming. It's the perfect ending track for that album, but I can really see why it's the totally wrong song to get into Gojira with.
Yeah the Global Warming live video is amazing for fans that already know the song. Out of context it's kinda boring because is so repetitive but once you know its place in the album is amazing. Sad thing albums are kinda dying
It's crazy how many different recommendations you get from Gojira fans, how everyone's opinions differ on one different band. Usually with bands the requests can be somewhat unanimous, but with Gojira a lot of people recommend so many different tracks. If I was to lean towards the next one it would certainly be flying whales. I think it's fantastic and showcases a lot of what this band are capable of in one track. As always Jim, I don't comment much but always appreciate you honesty and insight in to tracks I have known and loved for years! 🤜🤛
Gojiraaaaa! They are a band who require a certain... Disposition? Your ears are now trained and adapted enough to enjoy them. I think you would love 'Gift of Guilt', 'Flying Whales', Gojira is definitely a rabbit hole you should definitely go down!
Go for one of the more radio friendly tracks. That's basically how I found them with stranded and silvera, now I love almost all of their stuff. Definitely a band that you need to ease your way into, but once you do they're amazing.
Glad you came back to Gojira and it sounds like you are too. Check out their live stuff if you can, they're extremely tight and thier drummer is absolutely awesome. Super precise and complex.
Yes! Glad to see you coming to appreciate one of my all time favorite bands. Their songwriting and musicianship are top notch! If not on the channel, then at least on your own time listen through the albums From Mars to Sirius, The Way of All Flesh, and L'Enfant Sauvage.... Thanks for sharing your journey!
I had already heard many Gojira tracks before however the first time I saw them on youtube opening their set with Osoborus it solidified them in my musical rotation forever
Discovered your channel from reactions to Tool, my favorite band, and now you're on to #2 favorite Gojira. If you want to listen to more Gojira I would suggest Flying Whales. Really enjoy the channel.
Cool to see you giving them another chance! One of my favourite heavy bands :) There are many tracks to recommend: The Art of Dying (Long-track), Flying Whales (a classic), L'enfant Sauvage (one of their most known songs), Explosia (for some insane groove and western-style guitar), Gift of Guilt (epic live video with apocalyptic feeling to it) - and many more of course. Enjoy the ride!
Agreed ....feel I'm on similar journey to you but I'm going the other way.. .from heavier genres and krautrock....recently to African beats, jazz and soul...great channel
Jim, may I be so bold as to suggest you give Born in Winter a try? You'll see a different side of the band. Even if you don't react to it, it's amazing.
You’re right about going down that journey. If you go there before listening to this band it brings everything together even more! Excellent band for me right now. Good luck everyone.
Thanks for this review! It's beautiful to hear about your growth in hardened songs and vocals. I see a bunch of excellent suggestions from other that are the usual essentials.I can sit a whole year waiting for them.. Whole ablums are great! Today I'll speak for an underestimated and never reviewed songs another heavy, rich and layered, the last of the album : The way of all flesh. ( If you see a 17min clip, it's because of a hidden song.)
I discovered this song and this band while they were playing live, they opened the concert with this too, my teenage mind was absolutely blown away. What a memory ten years later.
Thanks for the reaction Jim, this album really captures the essence of humanity and spirit. One of my favorites of all time. I hope you follow through the album as you did with Fear Inoculum! 🤘
I saw the title quick and thought it was the Mars Volta’s “Ouroboros” from The Bedlam In Goliath and got super excited! It’s ok though... I can be patient. I think!? 😏🤘🏼
Getting past the vocals was the first step to not only accepting them but even enjoying them fully with real Metalhead enthusiasm. I understand the earlier reactions you had. I was the same when I first heard so much Metal. I actually have a harder time appreciating middling clear vocals than full throttle Death Metal growls now. Gojira, Opeth, Anathema, Orb. Megadeath. Not bad list. Death is a great band although the singing is a high pitched screech I've come to love and they are considered the fathers of Death Metal and one of the greatest. try them out. Or if not ready try the guitarist-composer-singer's other band Control Denied with a more classic Metal vocalist. Also excellent.
Glad you’ve come around to Gojira, Jim. So much to discover and love. Flying Whales, Art of Dying or Explosia would be awesome next! PS Fuck yeah Chemical Bros and The Orb. Fuck. Yeah.
My journey into metal was similar too. One album that was helpful was Colors by Between the Buried and Me. Not a big fan of their other stuff but love that album. The other bands were Isis - Panopticon and Cult of Luna - Somewhere Along the Highway.
Keep up the good work buddie , guift of guilt is where to go next or the art of dying. They are supreme live also if you would like to indulge us all :) .
At first I thought he was pronouncing gojira wrong, but then I realised it’s where I’m from. Everyone in South Yorkshire pronounces it GO-GE-RA. Ffs I have been saying it wrong for ten years. Great review! Thanks for the pronunciation lesson :D
Hi Jim, you could start with their latest Album "Magma" as it is to me their easiest album to get into. Or jump straight to "From Mars To Sirius" my fav album from them.
Thanks for the upload Jim, mostly appreciated. My Suggestions are: Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (disk two) The Faceless - Autotheist Movement Parts 1 to 3 Cradle of Filth - Lord Abortion (need lyrics for this) Carcass - Heartwork
Have you listened to anything by Black Crown Initiate, yet, Jim? Something tells me you might enjoy them, too. Try out "A Great Mistake" or "Selves We Cannot Forgive".
Jim, please take my advice and listen to Born in Winter. It's the bands favorite song, and also mine. I didn't know that till I heard an interview after I've heard it quite a few times.
Sorry I have to comment once again but I just keep thinking of stuff I would love you to react to and INFECTED MUSHROOM is a band you should definitely check out. Start with HEAVYWEIGHT. It sounds like a DJ but it's a whole band. They are AMAZING live
You should try Explosia from their L'Enfant Sauvage album. The title track is pretty awesome, too. Or if you want to explore their more mellow side, try something from the Magma album: The Shooting Star, Silvera, Stranded, Magma or the album's jewel crown, Low Lands.
Hi Jim, I really like your thoughts and reactions to the songs. I would like to introduce to you an english band called Slugdge. I would suggest their song " The spectral burrows" . That is my favourite song of them so far. Their music can be described as technical- progressive melodic death metal (I hate these labels but they help to describe music). I'm looking forward to your reaction. Please excuse my bad english.
Such an under rated tricky song on the kit. Mario is such a beast. I think you might be ready for The art of dying by them. That truely is one of the hardest songs I’ve heard to play on the kit. Yes I know Thomas Hawke is probably no1 but Mario surely is right up there for that top spot. Once you do The art of dying, do Esoteric Surgery which follows on from TAOD on the album.
Ocean Planet. Perfect balance of heaviness and emotion. Also, nobody seems to be wanting to suggest anything from Magma, but that is easily their most accessible album, so I'd give songs from that a go if you want to really try get into them. Silvera, Stranded etc. may seem like cliche's to the fan base at large, but they're a great gateway to the rest of the band's work.
Not sure if you read comments on old videos, but I would love to see a whole vinyl listen of a Gojira album in your newest format. It is hard to recommend one, but I have picked up their latest, Fortitude and it would be a great listen as it has been highly accepted and rewarded. From Mars to Sirius (still waiting on shipping) is a masterpiece, and I have recently taking a liking to L'Enfant Sauvage and ordered that one too. It is on the heavier side and typically a double LP, where Fortitude is typically found in single LP. I am sure the next album I really dive into will be loved just as much as the others, they are just that amazing.
actually..i totally forgot about that. You could react to "Conception - Grand Again" some say thats the best clean vocalists in metal. I guess some people are going really crazy about that band
Jim, you came at Gojira exactly the right way... when you were ready. And now that you're ready, whet your appetite on Flying Whales and then feast on The Art of Dying.
Better than the last Gojira Song on the channel for sure. But the song itself was slightly to.. straight for me.. maybe to much tool in the last weeks xD but its definitly nice to listen to. Oh Well now you got a feeling for gutteral voices i recommend a band again that i did before.. the german Band Finsterforst. They got a New Album tho and i love it.. so i recommend: Finsterforst - Wut. Oh and if you maybe will do that i will translate the lyrics in the comments.
Finsterforst is a great suggestion, unfortunately their latest album kind of is their worst one. "Zum Tode hin" ("towards death") is the definitive go-to-album the band has done. I recommend "Untergang", a 26 minute epic tune that doesn't ever get boring.
You should check out the song “L’Enfant Sauvage”, and or the entire “From mars to Sirius” album if and when you can. I think they perfected themselves with that album.
the end of the song is a lead-in for Toxic Garbage fyi thus that might be a good choice for youe next Gojira reaction. The art of dying and flying whales are also musts. Also, I agree with you about the sort of journey you have to go on to appreciate certain styles. it took me 6years before I got into Death Metal and even Vocals like ISIS's are still a bit "ehhhhh" for me. haha
Hmm, still getting into this... do like the idea of a podcast; hopefully without the compression YT use (I hear that crackle so often on YT vids). Thinking of picking up Mike Ostrich's fallen mantle? His Progscape Radio was the giant of prog podcasts until last year. Some streams still up... OK, try (WARNING! 3hrs long): www.progscaperadio.com/podcasts/PSR_0666.mp3 and see progscaperadio.com/current.php for what is on each podcast. All good fun!
If you like this Jim you will definitely love Sepultura if you haven't heard.....would be surprised if you haven't......one of the all time greats in thrash without a doubt. Try Dead Embryonic Cells. Their albums Beneath The Remains, Chaos AD and Arise are all time classics now....for me they are the Sabbath of this genre....
Hey man great channel! I actually start liking some tracks more than before, watching you react to them :D Try some more SYL. Maybe All Hail The New Flesh from City album, or Skeksis from Alien ;)
Tatiana Shmaylyuk of Jinjer got me over the hump as far as appreciating harsh vocals was concerned. And yes, when one surrounds that barrier, it opens up a whole new world in music appreciation.
If you wanna push your limits a bit further, I’d love to see you do Amenra - A Solitary Reign. Band has been slept on for years but they’re gaining a cult following. They’re making some of the most beautifully devastating music out there.
For something a bit more mellow or Tool-oriented try "Magma" or "The Shooting Star". I'd suggest "Wolf down the Earth" or "Art of Dying" for more prog elements and their absolute standout track is "Flying Whales" which features one of the greatest riffs in Metal history and very catchy. Since you mentioned ISIS I think it's time for you to experience the transcendent power of Alcest's music. Please try "Kodama" or "Eclosion" to begin with.
I think you’ll really enjoy Art of Dying when you get around to it. Definitely my favorite Gojira song.
Best gym song. The over one minute buildup is so intense
Same!!
3 months later, still this!
Best album imo, but yeah I admit the art of dying is what pulled me in to the band initially 😀
I read a comment on a Gojira video that sums them up perfectly. It essentially said that Gojira is like wine. I think flying whales is the one for you jim

One of? One of you say??? Tch tch!!!
The best music reaction channel
The end blends in toxic garbage island, the next (great) track. That whole album is amazing
September Sun it’s their best album I can’t stop going back to it front to back it’s so brilliant
The best transition! You can check my cover of the 2 songs ( in the same video ofc ;) )
Oroborus is the one that got me hooked on Gojira. Glad you enjoyed it and always love watching your reactions mr. Jim.
That whole album is a masterpiece.

Gojira - L’enfant Sauvage is an amazing, very stylish and catchy track of theirs.

Emil Marin- global warning was my first song and can’t get enough now. I just wasn’t ready. Everyone is different.
You have your very own screaming baby these days so harsh metal vocals somehow seem more pleasing on the ear now......

Where Dragon Dwell live at HELLFEST is their best performance
so, that you are now able to embrace harsher vocals, it's pretty much about time to get a grip onto Meshuggah - Clockworks. Mindblowing.

Carcass - Heartwork

Graciously grasping Gojira's gargantuan gymnastic greatness.

Always listen to Gojira (Go je ra) LIVE !
If you wanna push your limits a bit further, I’d love to see you do Amenra - A Solitary Reign. Band has been slept on for years but they’re gaining a cult following. They’re making some of the most beautifully devastating music out there.
Ok! So now you need to do Ouroborous by The Mars Volta! :)
That's what I said
My picks for the next one.....Pray , Where Dragons Dwell( live at Hellfest.....🔥🔥🔥)or L' Enfant Sauvage....
Gojira music makes me happy.
Toxic garbage island is one of my favorite Gojira songs! You should check it out
is it just me or does the volume turn down, when Jim speaks during the song? Experienced the same on a previous Tool reaction
Does it??? Not sure what’s happening there. Nothing I’ve done. Sorry 😬
Their best song ever in my opinion. All downhill from here (not in a bad way, it’s just this song is perfection).
Try Insomnium- While we sleep. Some Finnish melodeath. Not all that gloomy that one might think.
Well now you just have to listen to Ouroborous by The Mars Volta. It just seems fitting
Gojira - Born in Winter
