Paper Luigi does make a cameo after beating the game, in the music player. Edit: I just realized he mentioned it please don’t kill me WAIT THEY FORGOT TO PUT HIM BACK IN THE BOOK-
Once again I say unto you, if you want to repeat Luigi's dialogue for yourself; _"Potonotunitanotunanacenatunacanaiblrlrcenanainacenanatenonorapetanitiniti."_
To this day, I ask myself; when he recorded the gibberish for the Bros, did Charles Martinet read out of a script like yours, or did he just went completely random while trying to sound Italian?
@@paperluigi6132 That's a _really_ good question, holy crap. It could be that he made a bunch of takes and eventually landed on one that sounded good while combining several parts from the previous tries?
It's small but the fact Bowser refers to Luigi as "green guy" in this game again where at the end of Dream Team, he develops enough respect for Luigi to actually call him by his real name for the first time ever is sad. Like Bowser clearly respects Luigi at that game and in this one, it's like the past game's events never happened.
Actually... Bowser does indeed call him Luigi right before the fight starts. The line goes "(Paper Bowser) So Mario... (Boswer) and... other Mario! And Luigi... Let's do this!" Bowser was just taunting Luigi by calling him 'green guy'. It is disappointing that Paper Jam makes nearly zero references to the past games in their series, but it does indeed take place after Dream Team.
He doesn't clearly respect Luigi at all. Just because he doesn't call him by his name again doesn't mean they forgot about the past games. Bowser can call them whatever he wants. So that must mean that if Bowser doesn't call Mario by his first name they forgot about past game's events, right? Wrong.
Originally Alpha Dream was going to focus more on the Crossover element by having both worlds merge, and have old Paper Mario Characters appear as cameos and bosses (some of the old bosses would appear because they came out of the book before they were defeated by Paper Mario), but they scrap the idea because they thought it would be too complicated to follow and thought that no one would have enjoyed it. That is how we got the game that we have right now.
My favorite joke in paper jam is when that toad is rambling about some story and the game literally tells you that you can fats forward, even though it never tells you anywhere else
After seeing this I’m like 90% sure the paper-craft battles are based on that thing they do at Japanese festivals where two groups of people carry and ram two big floats against each other with the goal of knocking the opposing float into the crowd.
Touche, but that still doesn’t change the fact that while this wasn’t the worst Mario & Luigi game (it only got worse and worse with each cash-grab remake even though they didn’t sell anywhere near as well as the original. I know sales shouldn’t really affect the quality of video games themselves, but with the very existence of remakes to classics of the M&L series, and I mean in the way of Nintendo (and AlphaDream in the late 2010s), it makes me think that the quality of the remakes are what made AlphaDream stand on its last legs), it was the downfall of the M&L series. But with Paper Mario, on the other hand, while it was hands-down at its best throughout the 2000s with the first three games, it went downhill with Sticker Star and (only marginally) improved with Paper Jam, Color Splash and The Origami King. My opinion, at least.
@kieranstark7213 it's been a year since you commented but I got to say that sticker star is better than paper jam in my opinion. Paper jam might have better gameplay, but the story is non-existent and emotionless. At least sticker star felt like each action had a purpose outside of "get tot he end and beat bowser". The characters weren't all jokes..
Easily he could've had Starlow's role of being nothing more than a tutorial provider, while still being an important part of the story, with him speaking fluent English.
But, the thing is, you actually gotta *try* to trigger the glitches. It ain't no Sonic 06 where they happen randomly, so it's still a step in the right direction.
I feel confident that if they had included Paper Luigi, they would have just stripped him of his ability to speak rather than utilize the personality he had in the first three games. His role in Sticker Star and Color Splash was very minor. He didn't even have a single line of dialogue in the former.
If you look into the development of the game, it's really upsetting. Right off the bat you should be able to tell that the game was rushed, considering the game released just 2 years after Dream Team. They did a Developer "Miiting" on Miiverse and talked a bit about the game's development. The developers explained that they struggled a lot with coming up with the story for the game. It was originally gonna be a super crazy game involving a bunch of red herrings, going in and out of the Paper world, etc. But in the end, they ended up streamlining it to focus on interactions between the Main characters and their paper counterparts. Hidden within the files of the game is a Paper Stingby enemy that was never used. Now, normal Stingbies weren't in the game, but I'm guessing they were planned at some point. EVERY single paper enemy in the game was ripped from Sticker Star. There wasn't a single new paper enemy or character created for the game. They could've made Paper Toadette or Paper Nabbit, but they didn't. Everything is just from Sticker Star. Why didn't they create new paper assets? It's hard to say. I'm thinking it was likely either due to: -AlphaDream being unable to replicate the paper Artstyle / Intelligent Systems not helping create new assets -Not being allowed to / encouraged not to (this would possibly explain the lack of Paper Toadette, who still hasn't appeared in a modern Paper Mario game) -Not having enough time (there were a heck ton of new Mario & Luigi sprites in the game, and they only had 2 years to do it. Perhaps they didn't have enough time to make Paper enemies to accompany them. Paper Jam followed the same restrictions of Sticker Star, but it went all out. Bullies, King Boo, King Bob-Omb, Biddy Buds, Sandmaarghs, Ant Troopers, Chargin' Chucks, Nabbit, Toadette... they utilized a lot of creative enemies. Not to mention they made M&L versions of every paper enemy from Sticker Star. Ninjis, Broozers, Scaredy Rats, Spikes, Flutter... It's awesome how much they did. You can tell how hard they tried to make the game creative while refraining from making any new enemies or characters. Judging by the Paper Stingby, it is my belief that they intended to make paper variations of all the enemies, some characters, and some more of the bosses in the game. We could've gotten Paper Bullies, Paper Biddy Buds, Paper Nabbit, Paper Toadette, Paper King Boo, etc. But instead we got no new paper ANYTHING. I believe that Paper Jam could've and likely _would've_ been good. But rushed development, possibly a poor financial state, and other unknown reasons, made Paper Jam the un-creative game that it is. -- This is all I have to say about this, but I'd like to share my own ideas for how Paper Jam could've been better, and I'll do that in a reply to this comment.
*How Paper Jam could've been better:* -Ditch Starlow. She had a story reason to be in Dream Team, but she had absolutely NO reason to be in Paper Jam. Why was she even at Peach's Castle at the beginning of the game? I have no clue. With Starlow gone, who will replace her? There are a few options. Paper Luigi could come along for the ride. He wouldn't fight, but he would give advice and speak for the bros. This might be a bit hard to do. I honestly don't think Paper Luigi's personality works very great for the role of a traveling companion. They could always do it without a partner at all. HOWEVER, I think there is one idea that would work the best... -Create an original character to be the traveling companion. With Starlow gone, now's the perfect opportunity to create a new companion specifically for the game. This is what the Paper Mario series has been doing since Super. Tippi, Kersti, Huey, and Olivia are all completely original characters created just for the game. Having a new character would really make the game fresh, and he/she could be incorporated into the story in some way. There's a lot of potential. -Create Paper Variations of every enemy. Paper Bullies, Biddy Buds, etc. This would make the game feel less like "Sticker Star invades Mario & Luigi" and more like "The world of Paper Mario invades Mario & Luigi". I don't think they should make new enemies, but making Paper versions of the new additions to the M&L series would've added a lot. Maybe even bring in a few Paper enemies, like Crazy Dayzees and Bandits. There are already bandits in the M&L series and I bet dayzees would fit right in as well. -Add Paper King Boo and / or Paper King Bob-Omb. Petey was the only one with a Paper counterpart, and it was really cool to see. Imagine if we had an extra boss with either Paper King Boo or Paper King Bob-Omb. Maybe they could even flip the order you fight them. Fight Paper King Bob-Omb first, earlier on, and then fight the real King Bob-Omb later. Perhaps his fight could replace the Tower Pokey battle. -Change the world themes. Keep the Grass, Desert, Beach, and Mountain themes, but change their aesthetics and make them more interesting. For example, Sunbeam Plains, as it is currently, is just NSMBWii styled grasslands. Make the grass a bit more yellow-ish, change the patterns on the dirt and grass, and add a bunch of sunflowers. Boom, now you've got an entirely original, yet still familiar world. There are also Toad villages everywhere. Make them more interesting. Intertwine normal looking houses (that fit the environment) with a few Toad houses, instead of making every village just a ton of Toad Houses. They could also give the Toads on Mt. Brr winter coats or something. -Add more Paper involvement. Paper Characters need more of a spotlight in the game. Why not introduce Paper Lakitus to work with the irl Lakitus in the Lakitu Info Center? Perhaps some villages could be entirely Paper Lakitus, while others could have a mix of both. Perhaps they aren't as good at working as normal Lakitus, so they come up with their own job. I'm not sure how I feel about adding Paper Toadette and Paper Nabbit, but if done properly, they could add a lot to the game. Paper Nabbit for example, could alternate appearances with normal Nabbit, before meeting at the end of the game. Bringing back Toadsworth and adding Paper Toadsworth could also add a lot. Toadsworth is a great character and having 2 of them would be great to see. -Improve Papercraft battles. Nothing really to say here. -Make Toad missions more exciting. Perhaps some missions could involve going into the Paper world to save irl Toads who went into the book. Or maybe some missions could be active while you do the main adventure. Instead of having to activate missions at an Info Center, why not have a few of them active within the world that you can do while you explore and progress the plot? j don't think I have very good ideas about the Toad missions, but they could be a lot better. -Sprinkle in Paper Luigi encounters. Make him have his own quest and have him show up for Comedy moments once and awhile. -- And yeah, that's about it. I tried to keep my ideas in-line with the actual Paper Jam we ended up getting. I would love to see some alternate version of the game that focuses on fanservice, or a game that involves going into the Paper world. But this is just my vision of how the game we ended up getting could've been improved.
@@DaNintendude I would've done Paper Luigi, but also throwing in a Mr. L mini boss, and would have also removed the beans. Have the underground collectable be badge fragments, or something.
@@DaNintendude Honestly, imagine if this game pulled the Spider-Man: No Way Home approach to a crossover that the film did. As it stands, this game is more of a "Dream Team meets Sticker Star" in its aesthetic, but if the likes of Paper Mario 64, TTYD, and Super were also tapped into, imagine just how incredible this game could have been. Imagine seeing Dimentio return, or Mr. L, or Grubba. Imagine being able to re-experience previous Paper Mario boss fights through the Mario and Luigi combat and being able to traverse Hooktail's Castle or Shy Guy's Toybox in a 3d environment. Man, I'm really gonna miss Alphadream, I hope those guys find work elsewhere because they're insanely talented.
@@thegreatgonzales6813 I think the main problem with something like that is that it's really hard to do well. If they did a crazy insane crossover game, I'd want them to handle it really well. And if it did happen, I'd hope it's not canon, lol. But man, if we did get a well-done RPG crossover game, that'd be sick
Looking back at this game, it really feels like this was a sign AlphaDream was in trouble. It using assets from Dream Team and Sticker Star to lower costs and justifying it as a "crossover" is overlooking the fact that the fifth game in the series is really just being stitched together. It makes the crossover seem less like one that exists out of want and creativity and more out of necessity and development costs.
If anything they should’ve put it on the Nintendo Switch as a part of the 2017 or 2018 lineup of Mario games instead of doing two remakes. It wouldn’t have saved them a lot, but at least then most of the money they got would’ve saved their company a little bit.
Pretty much. AlphaDream was probably trying to stay afloat as they prepared to release a Switch game, but the poor sales weren't able to sustain any potential game development. It definitely hurt that they're mostly only known for M&L, a franchise they have to pay a license for with each new release and can only release for one company's game systems.
@Buzzy Trombone if they put this game on the switch, it wouldn't have been as rushed, and it and the remakes probably would've been seen and bought by more people.

@@rockstarpyro1581 I think you replied to the wrong comment, he’s talking about how there’s no existing characters in each series against eachother, not lack of new and original characters
It’s a great game gameplay wise. It just feels so darn soulless compared to all the other ones. I guess that’s what you get when you have a collaboration with Sticker Star.
well look, im here to defend sticker star, so get ready gooper bloopers theme slaps and... yeah I got nothing. (really though, I think the game isnt as bad as everyone says it is)

It wouldn't mesh with the others. Having 3 illiterate characters and then paper luigi wouldn't make alot of sense, and it would also eliminate the need for starlow, cuz her whole purpose is pretty much to be the voice of the trio
@@chickennoodlegamer915 I mean, did they need to bring starlow back at all? she really had no reason to return in paper jam at all and sticks out like a sore thumb considering she's the only RPG-original creation in paper jam's brutally streamlined cast of characters.

"Yeah, suddenly, and for no reason, even though it was really working well for the past Mario games, we have decided we simply just don't want Mario games to have personality anymore." Nintendo, probably, at some point in the 2010's
@@megamike15 for paper mario maybe, but dream team came out in 2016 and that had a ton of personality. I really don't understand why intelligent systems got those stupid restrictions but the mario and luigi series never were put under that restriction. Nintendo never flat out said to alphadream that they can't have original characters, it was their own decision
I dont Understand, Why the Spin-offs are so Generic when the Main Line Games are Beign Creative and Original (In Odyssey you Fight a Realistic Dragon, Visit a Realistic City, Most of the Bosses are Brand new, Heck, The Lava World is Actualy a Food World!)
Paper jam missed out on having paper characters from the previous games. Such as: Paper bean people Paper shroobs Paper bowser insides(?) Paper dream creatures
Ehh. At that point it wouldn't even be a crossover with Paper Mario, it would just be a mash-up of all previous games with no thought put into it. Imo that would be worse than the gigantic amount of missed opportunity here.
Originally Alpha Dream was going to focus more on the Crossover element by having both worlds merge, and have old Paper Mario Characters appear as cameos and bosses (some of the old bosses would appear because they came out of the book before they were defeated by Paper Mario). I don't know if they would have made Paper versions of Mario & Luigi Characters, but that could have been cool.
It wouldn't be bad, but it'd kinda feel like a cash-grab at the end of it all. They never appeared in the Paper Mario games, so why put in what doesn't exist? That's like asking an Artist on the street to help them come up with new character designs that have nothing to do with the plot or story of a game. It makes no sense, and is pointless.
That's not to say, however, that an artist COULD come up with interesting character designs for a video-game. There are some talented artists out there who I am sure would love to be an artist for a game, and I'm not shaming them for that. All I'm saying is that people should be careful about who they choose to help them with their games.
"Weren't good anyway?" I won't stand for this staining of Bowser Jr.'s Journey's honor! It's one of the best Mario RPG stories that most people didn't play because of the unfortunate choice of platform and I will forever wave my flag in support of it!
That works for Tanabe, who is in charge of Intelligent games & also in charge of 98% of the Paper Mario series (I’m serious, that guy has that much power, he does actually control the Paper Mario series)
Jrs Journey and Minion Quest are definitely a case of see the story skip thr game Both plots are great (I adore the four captains) and Jr having some shred of character development and maturity was quite nice
@@theguyman256 he should have, yes, but that doesn’t always mean he will when he’s not enjoying himself. Also, while I love the cards system, they can be a little bit game breaking at times when you have the right cards.
Imagine if Intelligent Systems got rid of the mandates that causes Sticker Star to have generic toads, and the next Paper Mario had them collaborate with former AlphaDream employees to do a Paper Mario game that mixed the battle system of Thousand Year Door and 64 with the Mario and Luigi series. * Like we got a tag move where the Goomba partner uses the Double Cherry to clone himself and Mario becomes Fire Mario to send them flying up similar to Goomba Storm from Bowser’s inside story. * Mario using the Raccoon Leaf to fly up and then throw the bob-omb partner at an enemy. * A Shy Guy partner using the weird Mushroom and having Ice Mario freeze him to use as a bludgeon * A Yoshi Partner throwing Metal Mario at an enemy like he was an egg. * Luigi as a partner with his special moves being the Bros Moves from Superstar Saga Also imagine a Paper Mario game that had Mario partner up with some of the bosses from the SNES version of Wario’s Woods.
It doesn't seem to be Intelligent Systems that has that mandate, it's Nintendo itself that forces them to do it. I've noticed in general lately that all of the Mario spinoffs are required to use the same cookie cutter assets (as opposed to the N64, GameCube, and Wii era where they had a lot more personality). I think that's also what happened with Paper Jam, Nintendo didn't allow Alpha Dream to put any personality into the game. This is what happens when corporate interests that focus more on brand control than creativity have full power.
I would certainly the graphic style from the handheld Mario and Luigis (yes I liked the 3DS's styles more). Anyways, this doesn't seems very unlikely as the president or producer or something from Mario and Luigi was some of the same ones for Paper Mario.
The oddest part of this game is the sheer number of cameos from Mario characters. King Bomb Omb, King Boo, Petey Piranha, the Koopalings, the list goes on
i loved this retrospective series. my ranking of the games would have to be: 1: Dream Team 2: Bowsers Inside Story 3: Superstar Saga 4: Partners In Time these ^ are all top tier games and i love them to death. 5: Paper Jam i didn’t like paper jam very much compared to the others.
i don’t think paper jam is a bad game. it has the phenomenal gameplay of the others and a great soundtrack. it’s just the originality and creativity that i adore the other games for isn’t there at all. i’d say if you enjoyed paper jam and haven’t played the others, you should give them a shot. it is a spectacular series
@@bobbythebirdlyentity8126 honestly, I think the battle system is what keeps me in this series the most. It’s a mix of turn based and action based RPG systems that has only ever been done again in Undertale as far as I know. It’s why I prefer Paper Jam over PiT.
Kind of weird how Sticker Star’s battle system was a little janky, yet Paper Mario’s work here is better to say the least. I’m so glad that there was no Sticker shindig here.
18:08. At the time I'm writing this comment, this video has almost 60,000 viewers meaning that 2 times more people have seen this video than played the bowser's inside story remake
To be honest, I... kinda don't want another one. Yeah, the series has now died on a bit of a dry (not even sour, just dry) note, but I think its downhill slide had something to do with Nintendo wanting the games more and more how *they'd* want them. Just look at Paper Mario, it did have the same decline at the same time for nearly the same reasons, so I wouldn't be surprised if it really was Nintendo silently staving off AlphaDream's creative freedom. And yeah, Origami King is an alright game, but it's just that. I don't think they could do M&L like AlphaDream used to.
@@plazmasytAgreed. The games probably would've REALLY got bland. No original characters. Boring levels. No unique enemies. Only goombas and koopas. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING NEW!!!!! Just Mario and Luigi rescuing the princess for many games. It would've been bad.
@@thunderlightningbolt6597 No, that's not what I meant. I was saying like; they'd either do the same as Origami King and add (what I think is) the *right amount of new stuff*, but not in the right places or right ways, or just give up and make the next Sticker Star or Colour Splash and end up making thing too different and too new that it's not a lot like the games the series was known for. Should've explained that before now, my bad that I didn't.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who is still hurt emotionally by the Bobby story in Origami King. Also yeah my ranking: 1. Bowser’s Inside Story 2. Dream Team 3. Superstar Saga 4. Partners In Time 5. Uh, your aware that experience points aren't the only rpg element that exists right? A turn based battle system is an epg element. A well defined world with interesting characters is an rpg element
Back when I heard that Alphadream was gone, I cried. I literally cried. Mario and Luigi is my favorite videogame franchise of all time. Every day since Ive been hoping to hear something from this franchisr again and as long as Nintendo exists, I will never seize hope. Edit: Thank god Brothership came out pretty good.
For those that don’t know, paper jam was originally going to have a unique story but the story/plot they decided on got scrapped late on in development because they thought fans wouldn’t like it and therefore decided to stick to the basics instead. The plot was originally going to be the 2 mario’s and Luigi travelling through the paper world and mario world to stop bowser. They’re was going to be returning villains from both entries and other characters were gonna have bigger roles. They thought the backtracking would annoy the fans though so they decided to scrap it and went behind in development.
Honestly even if it had Kersti as a partner in addition to Starlow it would've been way better. She was loads of fun when she had Bowser and Dreambert to interact with, but here she basically exists to translate Mario and Luigi's gibberish.
You put dream team last and I know it’s just a quick ranking but I’m genuinely surprised and also disappointed. Not in you, it’s just I love that game to bits.

I would’ve loved to see a more Link Between Worlds idea, where we can cross the regular world and paper world with inter dimensional portals. However, they should cross between iconic locations, like going from Rougeport to the Wakeport, or the Plaque Beach to the Cape Key. They should’ve had the villains be from each universe too. I would’ve loved to see the return of Lord Crump or Fawful, doing their dirty deeds, and it would be funny to see the Bowsers try to fight them (again). I think they should’ve had the main villain be some kind of leader or president of a new location that wants to open these portals to learn about (and take over) newer lands. It could be fun to see a villain that tries to convince us he’s in the right.
21:47 Clearly, the fake "italian" speak of the Mario & Luigi games is the REAL reason we actually miss AlphaDream In all seriousness AlphaDream's bankruptcy is just depressing and I'm still not able to get over it even after all this time
"Pecoponestacorratopoconotopoquesorrapacrato" - Mario Mario Also oh my god dude, it seems like you have some serious problems with accepting AlphaDream's bankruptcy. Nobody wanted this to happen, and everyone tried to have hope, but at the end they went bankrupt. Look, I'm not able to get over it too but for god's sake, it's been more than a year, we should accept it and look forward.
"The pacing is way better than Dream Team" I feel like you don't quite have a grasp on the term pacing. It encompasses much more than just coming down to "how often does this game stop to give me a tutorial". It deals with story beats, when to give the player direction and how to balance tension. Partners in Time's structure, for example, lends itself phenomenally to pacing. You arrive at a new location after some downtime of learning new moves and stocking up on items, then you learn of a conflict, you explore the area, building tension, then you release the tension with a climatic boss battle and you usually return to Peach's castle, where there is again some downtime. It's very formulaic in that game, but SS, BiS and DT also do it quite well. They always give you a clear new objective and pave the way accordingly. You need to climb Hoohoo Mountain to get a stone to forge hammers; you need to go through the Energy Hold to find Wisdurm and get a Star Cure; you need to traverse Somnom Woods in order to get into its Dream World and find the Zeekeeper. Paper Jam spectacularly fails at doing this. You wander aimlessly through most areas often with little more goals other than "reach the goal of the area", which would at least be servicable (BiS does it with Plack Beach and Dimble Wood for Bowser to some extent) but then the game also actively halts you in the tension-building-phase to find some Paper Toads, killing the momentum the game at least tries to set you up with. So no, I would heavily disagree with the sentiment that this game's pacing is much better than Dream Team's.
@@Vecleas Mario from M&L and the Super series are the same. There's a theory that paper Mario from 64 - super is the same person as The mainline and spinoffs, since Mario party 5(I think) and 8 have references to the paper saga so... Yes Mario has the star rod, partners, and the star spirits do exist in both dimensions.
Listen I know it sucks Paper Luigi isn’t in the game. However saying, “They did it in Partners in time why not in this game” is a total misrepresentation of the game and really stupid. In Partners in Time the babies were always on the bros backs so you only had to control the bros or just the babies when they are separated. In Paper Jam you have to control Mario,Luigi and Paper Mario at the same time and if they added Paper Luigi that would probably be too much to handle and seem messy during the combat when you have to dodge a attack that hit all the bros.
Maybe it's the boomer in me, but if we have 4 buttons next to each other, they can serve a purpose (at worst the game is inoffensive to me, but it's still the most bland M and L title and most interesting modern paper mario(the rpgs))
mario and luigi partners in time did use 4 buttons for each character, but it was only used in battles to do more damage, otherwise the babies and the adults would be doing seperate battles with two buttons. having the four buttons in paper jam would be tougher than in partners in time
No mention of nabbit fighting you then running into enemies and suddenly being your friend, i really enjoyed his presence in battle, and that he used his own bro moves with mario or luigi
I would have loved to see Fawful become the Shadow Queen's minion, or see the X-Nauts and Shroobs team up, or even Jr Troopa become Poppel's new partner. Literally anything from the other games in the series would have been nice.
Should’ve just made Paper Luigi the starlow of the game and give tutorials. Him giving the other Luigi a pep talk would’ve been nice but he’s chilling on a beach instead
Tbh what I remember most from paper jam were the bosses. Maybe not the most unique designwise but the battles themselves were pretty unique and creative imo
I wish some of the notable characters from Paper Mario were actually apart of Paper Jam, like imagine a Cage Fight against O’Chunks and Rawk Hawk or Twink flying in to check on the imprisoned Princess Peachs, or have Neo-Bowser Castle have a fight against the Anti-Guy Squad instead of “Koopaling but with slightly better stats” Stuff like that would’ve been gold for a game that seemed like a crossover between Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi
This game post Origami King helped me realize that the restriction of no new original characters in spinoffs was affecting games way earlier than we had realized because Dream Team may be the last Mario spinoff with original characters discounting Mario and Rabbids. I hate this stupid rule and I'm getting more upset in hindsight as days pass and I realize which games have also been affectrd by this dumb rule. Like Bowser clearly respects Luigi at that game and in this one, it's like the past game's events never happened.
the past games never happening would explain some things, except for starlow
Actually... Bowser does indeed call him Luigi right before the fight starts. The line goes "(Paper Bowser) So Mario... (Boswer) and... other Mario! And Luigi... Let's do this!" It is disappointing that Paper Jam makes nearly zero references to the past games in their series, but it does indeed take place after Dream Team.
He finally realized that luigi was God tier.
He doesn't clearly respect Luigi at all. Just because he doesn't call him by his name again doesn't mean they forgot about the past games. Bowser can call them whatever he wants. I think it was about Paper Petey or something
But yeah the game saying "please dont listen to this" was pretty good
After seeing this I’m like 90% sure the paper-craft battles are based on that thing they do at Japanese festivals where two groups of people carry and ram two big floats against each other with the goal of knocking the opposing float into the crowd.

Only time hes been playable ever was in super paper mario
I'm thinking it was likely either due to:
-AlphaDream being unable to replicate the paper Artstyle / Intelligent Systems not helping create new assets
-Not being allowed to / encouraged not to (this would possibly explain the lack of Paper Toadette, who still hasn't appeared in a modern Paper Mario game)
-Not having enough time (there were a heck ton of new Mario & Luigi sprites in the game, and they only had 2 years to do it.
--
This is all I have to say about this, but I'd like to share my own ideas for how Paper Jam could've been better, and I'll do that in a reply to this comment.
*How Paper Jam could've been better:*
-Ditch Starlow.
--
And yeah, that's about it. I tried to keep my ideas in-line with the actual Paper Jam we ended up getting. I would love to see some alternate version of the game that focuses on fanservice, or a game that involves going into the Paper world. But this is just my vision of how the game we ended up getting could've been improved.

I think the main problem with something like that is that it's really hard to do well.
It'd be nice if Nintendo recruited the developers into the company proper.

I'm probably the minority out there, but I honestly don't like Dream Team & I prefer this over Dream Team.
I only played Paper Jam so
i don’t think paper jam is a bad game. it has the phenomenal gameplay of the others and a great soundtrack. it’s just the originality and creativity that i adore the other games for isn’t there at all. i’d say if you enjoyed paper jam and haven’t played the others, you should give them a shot. it is a spectacular series
I’m so glad that there was no Sticker shindig here.
you know why paper Jam is better than sticker star.
it still sticks to the main mechanics that make the franchise fun
Honestly, Paper Mario: Sticker Shindig would've been a better title.
@@OtterloopB I actually had a few names like that planned before, haha.
Those paper jokes you made is the entire design philosophy behind every paper Mario game after TTYD.

I guess youre referring to the people who bought the game on a physical copy cuz I suppose the games been mostly played digitally via Nintendo eShop.

Mario and Luigi look so grumpy in the thumbnail. I love it.
Even they didn't like the *paper jokes*
Ironically enough, Mario & Luigi crossing over with Paper Mario ended up resulting in some pretty (quite literally) -terrible- tear-able ideas
This game was basically a crossover with sticker star.
really
I’d understand Color Splash a tiny bit more (despite not existing yet), but WHY STICKER STAR?!
ikr I love this game
Are you a stalker you look like chara
I just saw the Mario & Luigi logo in the thumbnail and my heart skipped a beat, I thought Nintendo just randomly announced a new M&L game
We can only dream...
Rip Alphadream...
Also yeah my ranking:
1. Bowser’s Inside Story
2. Dream Team
3. Superstar Saga
4. Partners In Time
5. Paper Jam
2 and 3 were hard to decide so you could maybe switch em around. Despite a ranking, the series was still gosh darn consistent compared to Paper Mario. Even down to the bottom I think are still great games.
This was the last time Paper Mario was involved with real RPG elements
Because Fire Emblem is the true RPG by Intelligent Systems... I'm beginning to question that company's name...
Uh, your aware that experience points aren't the only rpg element that exists right? A turn based battle system is an epg element. A well defined world with interesting characters is an rpg element
@@chickennoodlegamer915 just curious. Do sticker star and color splash have interesting characters?

Spubds amazing.
Also warionand waluigi super steal saga spunded so good

I feel like they still did a good job, since it's a crossover I didn't mind the fact that we explored all of the mushroom kingdom

Mario and Luigi Paper Jam is, in the words of DJ Subatomic Supernova, “Barely reaches the cusp of mediocrity.”
I mean sure the constant Tutorial nagging wich seemed voluntary and benefitial at first and was forced down your throat afterwards and the mediocre Story may have been it's weak points but last? Hell no, not to paper trashcan mario
@@FlameHricane but Luigi is ONE aspect of many in the Story. From the Toads complaining that he does nothing but sleep all the time to beating the master of Mega Battles in his own game and even get aknowledged as Luigi by him....
To be continued
That's what I'm saying, like it wasn't THAT bad, I can only think of 2 things that are bad (people say 2 but I only think one is bad) which are the tutorials and how long it is, also being the only Mario & Luigi game with a hard difficulty (That I can think of) puts it up there for me.
@@DeltaTried hard difficulty is basically boss arena difficulty only that it's permanent. The annoying part is that it doesn't automatically turn items into gold on full capacity (oh and the recieving damage being doubled of course but thats easy to ignore with shield equipment and badges)

Paper Luigi was intendid in the game, but they devs found it too hard to control 4 characters

@@bandankirb8982 Kind of, but that controls differently, imagine pressing A, B, X and Y just to jump or dodge an attack

New Super Mario Bros Wii (with 4 player feature): Allow me to introduce myself
So basically: They said "fuck Paper Luigi"
Just a friendly reminder that Bowser nuked Peach's Castle near the end.
Those characters are deeeeaaad

You know whats funny? The Game gives you the "Press R to skip cutscenes" while Pete phyranha is talking about herself
"The pacing is way better than Dream Team"
I feel like you don't quite have a grasp on the term pacing.
You nailed it! It just feels like one big wander through some so-so environments. I never felt the ups and downs of a narrative
One of my favorite things in this game is definitely the battle cards. Building your own customizable deck is honestly just so appealing.
I think I'm a bit of an extremist when I say that the badge system is kinda lame, but battle cards were *awesome*
Battle cards can be way too op at times and i love that about the game .
Oh I’m excited for THIS ONE
It was a good video
Anyone else rewatching this video after the Mario and Luigi Brothership announcement?
19:38 (coming from 2024)
Yeah, i think that line just extended
starlow freakin forgot the name of luigi and called him "the guy in green" at the end
All aside, this game confirms that paper mario and mario are different people
Yeah but... Did mario from M&L and Mario from Nintendo games are the same ? 🤔
@@Vecleas Mario from M&L and the Super series are the same. There's a theory that paper Mario from 64 - super is the same person as
The mainline and spinoffs, since Mario party 5(I think) and 8 have references to the paper saga so...
Maybe it's the boomer in me, but if we have 4 buttons next to each other, they can serve a purpose (at worst the game is inoffensive to me, but it's still the most bland M and L title and most interesting modern paper mario(the rpgs))
mario and luigi partners in time did use 4 buttons for each character, but it was only used in battles to do more damage, otherwise the babies and the adults would be doing seperate battles with two buttons. having the four buttons in paper jam would be tougher than in partners in time
I would have liked the challenge… or they could have had the bros pair up with their paper versions during counterattacking or dodging…
I can't wait for AntDude to cover M&L Brothership when it releases!
It appears that paper Luigi is Just kinda... Jammin...
Please don't leave
I love how king goomba will always be a half character in any game he’s in
No mention of nabbit fighting you then running into enemies and suddenly being your friend, i really enjoyed his presence in battle, and that he used his own bro moves with mario or luigi
The sad part about the papercraft mechanics is that it was the perfect opportunity to use the Koops Bros referencing their bowser robot.
Would've liked to see Paper Mario's Partners and Pixls interact with the Bros.
Fun fact: the team behind the Mario & Luigi games were forbidden from making "too many" original characters in those games after Sticker Star
Thanks Kensuke Tanabe.
Tbh what I remember most from paper jam were the bosses. Maybe not the most unique designwise but the battles themselves were pretty unique and creative imo
Cant wait for Mario And Luigi Brothership
I wish some of the notable characters from Paper Mario were actually apart of Paper Jam, like imagine a Cage Fight against O’Chunks and Rawk Hawk or Twink flying in to check on the imprisoned Princess Peachs, or have Neo-Bowser Castle have a fight against the Anti-Guy Squad instead of “Koopaling but with slightly better stats”
Stuff like that would’ve been gold for a game that seemed like a crossover between Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi
Ah, Paper Jam. One of the biggest RPG crossovers that was forgot about a week after it released.
I remember a few years ago there is supposedly this interview that Miyamoto said he wanted Mario to be on par with Mickey in terms of brand recognition... EVEN THOUGH HE ALREADY IS. I'm starting to wonder if that rule was introduced because of this statement and I should really find the interview thats from cuz... man Mario spinoffs are getting sad and sadder being bland New Soups of Mario games. Paper Jam gameplay wise is still fun and that snowy mountain is very Antiquity from Chrono Trigger music wise... MWAH THAT SONG IS SO BEAUTIFUL.
The Mario e luigi series marked my childhood. It is sad know how alpha dream is today. I still have some hope on nintendo switch. Btw Partners in time is my favorite game.
Thanks for making this Mario & Luigi retrospective! It’s definitely an interesting franchise to explore and I love each video you put out
