    I started with a squier 40 th anniversary ... then replaced tuners n bridge as i couldn't keep the damn thing in tuned... realised the maple neck wood wasn't making me fingers happy so i went for a Troy Van Leeuween signature Fender jazzmaster ...
    Omg what a guitar ...
    Love it ... i must admit the stock pick ups on the squier were really good .. but of course it was a 400 pounds guitar so u need to accept the wood grades were nowhere near as good as the fender i've got now ...
    If u are on the budget maple fretboards are the go to in my humble opinion .. better than indian laurel/ pau ferro etc.... my jazzmaster is a fab ...inspiring guitar and yes them pick ups are jangly but also have plenty of grit when overdriven ... i 'm a p90 person too and not a strat individual.. i tend to prefer humbuckers
    Yeeee i wish i looked a JM earlier

    I own a Squire 40th Anniversary Edition and I really enjoy playing it. For me, I view this instrument as a crossover hybrid between my more traditional jazz boxes and my solid body electrics. It's a very comfortable guitar to gig with, has a very acceptable tonal range and I am always asked questions at the breaks about it. Seems to be a crowd favorite as well. I don't spend a lot of time doing internet but do occasionally look for things that interest me. Here, once again is a player (compliments to him BTW) who seems more comfortable in a rock genre than in a more traditional jazz format, demonstrating an instrument specifically named for and targeted toward a completely different type of musician. I wonder when viewing these videos why Fender coined the name Jazzmaster at all, as it does seem that this guitar has not really been enthusiastically embraced by "jazz" players at all. Most of the videos one finds are being done by rock or punk music players. I tend toward interpreting music from a jazz perspective and I really believe this instrument deserves better recognition by that group of players. Curious why that has just never really happened?

    How well does the locking tremolo work? In your example, you'd lock it and change the 1st, 5th & 6th strings to get into Open G. Are you saying that when going back to standard tuning, you'd re-tune the 1st, 5th & 6th strings and the other unchanged strings will remain in tune? Is the tremolo usable in locked mode? Is the tuning stability quite good then?

    • @samwestguitar
      @samwestguitar  Год назад +2

      Yes that is what I’m saying, essentially by locking the trem you make all six strings completely independent from one another so tuning one string has absolutely no effect on the tuning of another. Assuming the neck stayed straight you could tune your guitar to pitch and then cut of every string but the high E string and the high E will still be tune just like any other hard tail guitar without a trem!
      As for how useable it is, the trem locks one way, so you can still lower the pitch of the strings by pushing the trem arm down but you can’t lift it up, so I’d say you have fairly limited use of it but it is certainly still useable.
      And in terms of tuning stability I think they certainly hold there tune however the set up of the individual instrument can affect tuning stability significantly but I don’t really have any issues with mine!
      Hope that was a helpful and thanks for watching! Let me know if that makes sense or if you have any other questions!

    Years ago I bought a Squier Jagmaster, and it was my main guitar for well over a decade. But I still always wanted a Jaguar, for some reason. Last year I finally decided to buy a Fender Jaguar, but at the last second I balked and bought a couple Squier Classic Vibes and some pedals. I am really glad I did that, because I learned that I much, much, MUCH prefer the Jazzmaster, with the more unique sounds and longer scale length. I didn't know I needed a Jazzmaster, all this time, but I did. I have now sold my Jaguar and bought a Fender Jazzmaster from Japan, and I love it. I'll probably keep the Classic Vibe for an alternate tuning (maybe I'll try baritone strings on it), and the Jagmaster for a humbucking / Nirvana-ish guitar.

      TheKnapster, the Squier 40th anniversary line is affordable and well designed with vintage switching and really decent p/u's and a super nice neck. I bought one for my daughter and it truly rivals my custom built JM.
      Squier started introducing the 40th about a year ago so the used market should start seeing all the ones that people wanted to "just try it out", are selling or have returned. Keep an eye on the GC site for used JM's.
      You get a guitar and the ability to try it for 30 days and then return, if it's not what you hoped for.
