      I still love Gemmell and will always dip into his work now and then. And now I'm working in a school hopefully can introduce some younger people to him as well. sadly most authors gradually slide from the mainstream after they pass and it's down to dedicated fans like yourself to keep spreading the word. Thanks for commenting.

    Knights of Dark Renown has the most memorable ending in all of Gemmell's books, I remember gasping when I first read the last bit because it was so Epic. My personal favorites also include Legend, Morningstar, The King Beyond The Gate (because Tenaka Khan and Decado are so wonderful) and Waylander.

    Absolutely love Echoes of the great song and anything about Waylander. Also Death walker and the rigante series was a huge favorite for me. I suppose the Shannow works had a "last stand" or more "Dark tower" feel to them giving them a post apocalypse nuance I loved too. Sieben was a great character btw. Also Skilgannon I suppose at the end of Druss' life tale. So many good hours of reading.

  • @SuccessionLockon

    I read my first Gemmell book last year, Legend. I really enjoyed it. I then read the 3 john shanow books which were epic. I'm currently reading the dranei books in chronological order and half way through white wolf. Despite already reading Legend, by the end of the legend of deathwalker, i was gutted even tho i knew how he died.
    I was so bummed i was just going to skip white wolf and jump into legend, im so glad i didnt skip it. how surprised i was when Druss runs out and rescues the villagers in white wolf!,
    I hadnt read reviews or the books discription so this was a huge suprise when Druss rocked up.
    As of writing this i'm half way through and cant wait to pick it back up.

    I've read a lot of Gemmell but, somehow, the only book I've actually read from your list is Legend
    Generally-speaking, most of my time was spent with the Drenai series. I was always drawn to books centered around Druss & Waylander, as I found them to be among his most compelling protagonists
    Some of my other favorites, tho, were Quest for Lost Heroes, Winter Warriors, and Morningstar

    Excellent list. It's really hard to make a bad list when it comes to Gemmell's work, they're all great. My personal top 5 are basically the Forsaken pair and the Troy trilogy, largely because I read them when I was doing a lot of travelling, back when my time was my own. I love how his writing style is very simple but full of soul, they're proper page turners xD

    Gemmell was an underrated and underappreciated novelist in the heroic fantasy genre... I was always fascinated with ancient history and so 'Lion of Macedon' and 'Dark Prince' are my favourites I have read both countless times... I enjoyed the Drenai novels as well and in particular, 'Legend' and 'Waylander'... although I appreciate that 'Druss' was Gemmell's most iconic character, I do think the character was a little overused by the time of the Skilgannon novels... Gemmell's re-tellings of the Arthurian legend and the Trojan War were interesting as were the 'Rigante' books

    Knights of dark renown holds a special place in my heart too. I see it as an inversion of the "power corrupts" trope. Instead of good people becoming bad you essentially have bad people becoming good (obviously some worse than others but by their society standard they're all criminals of one type or another - even if your just taking about a runaway slave).
    I never seen that before and loved the idea of the "corrupting" power of good. exlemptified by groundsel perhaps the best . Its an exceptional book and probably one of the best to give to someone as an introduction to gemmell due to its stand alone nature. Hell of an ending too.

    • @SeagullsGather
      @SeagullsGather  3 года назад +1

      it's a wonderful book and I'm happy to find another fan. I love the way Arian fights and fails against the corruption, the gradual realisation of the fallen 'good' characters of their own failings as the 'bad' characters realise their own strengths. As a younger man I disliked the epilogue but now I recognise the power of the last lines and think, in their simplicity, they may be some of Gemmell's best. Would have loved a true sequel but sometimes it's best to be left wanting rather than disappointed!

    I've often wondered about which would be in my top 5 as a I love them all but i especially enjoyed his take on Troy. If you've read Legend and then the Troy series you could see how he had developed as a writer and just kept his audience hooked.You could tell David Gemmel was reaching his peak as a writer. It just makes it so sad that he died at the peak of his writing powers with so many unwritten stories to be told. I wish I could have told him how it was he that made me find the joy in the written word and how he made my time in prison (as a wayward youngster 20 years ago) so much easier and bearable creating worlds that I could escape to and characters that are truly engrossing .
    R.I.P.

    • @SeagullsGather
      @SeagullsGather  4 года назад

      I met him at a book signing and he was a gentlemen and patiently answered the questions of even the most tongue-tied star struck fan (that was me of course). His death was a real shame as I think most people recognise the Troy series as either his peak or at least a genuine return to form. I found them very enjoyable but didn't include them here because there's an enormous amound to choose from and because the Alexander series was just incredible. Thanks for watching/commenting.

    I have to respectfully disagree with you that these books are written for teens. I started reading his books in my mid-20’s. Now 50, my life experiences are vastly different than in my 20’s and I now find myself associating with different characters and their struggles. I also see a beauty and wisdom in the relationships, romantic or otherwise, today that I absolutely missed 25 years ago. Gemmell is all about the imperfect heroes. Look at Winter Warriors, the protagonists are past their prime and suffering from the ravages of time, a concept lost on me in my youth. Gemmell’s works are timeless and anyone; man/woman, young/old can relate to the tales.

  • @GonzoTehGreat

    My top 10 (in no particular order) Legend, The Legend of Deathwalker, The First Chronicles of Druss the Legend, Waylander, In the realm of the Wolf, Hero in the Shadows, Lion of Macedon, Quest for Lost Heroes, Dark Moon, Morningstar
    Gemmell's weakness was that he had a tendency to repeat himself, reusing characters and plot points in his stories. In particular, some of his sequels suffered from this "Gemmellian stereotyping", the most common trope being the hard living, lone wolf veteran fighter who's haunted by a dark past. This type casting worked perfectly for some characters (e.g. Dakerys) but felt stale and overused when applied to others.
    His best books are supposed to be the Rigante and Troy series but I've not read them yet. Hopefully I've saved the best for last!

      while I considered the Troy series a return to form I didn't consider them among his best. All of your top 10 are good choices, generally Morningstar isn't well regarded due to it's narrator but I enjoyed it. It's good to see it has another fan.

      @@SeagullsGather Thanks for your reply. Yes, these are my top 10 favourites, not necessarily what I think are his top 10 best novels, which is why I have a few odd choices because I appreciate the variety in his storytelling.
      Unfortunately, he will write no more. Can you recommend other similar writers? I don't think anyone writes like him but others occasionally come close or can be grouped in the same genre. Cheers!

    I've only read the Rigante Novels and thought they were awesome. With so many good books it seems, anyone got a recommendation of which book or books to read next. Or should I just start at the beginning and read Legend?

      Well I recommended you five in the video but the comments are full of other people making great choices too. Legend is a great place to start.

      There is a chronological order to the drenai saga but honestly starting with druss' 3 books or Waylander 3 books is a good starting point

    Where would you rank the first two Rigante novels? For some reason I loved these two books, the characterization is excellent.

    • @SeagullsGather
      @SeagullsGather  4 года назад

      I particularly liked the first one, Connavar is decent Gemmell style protagonist. Though the series got (slightly) less interesting as it went along they are all well worth reading.

      I'm shocked that they're barely mentioned in the chat here, but I think they're the best depictions of a flawed hero in existence. I tried to read Drenai afterwards and was really put off by how much weaker the characters were. I'd rank them 2>1>3, but they're all fantastic.

    I prefer "Lion of Macedon" over "Dark Prince" because it examines 4th Century BC politics of Ancient Greece as a young Parmenion traverses Sparta, Thebes and Macedon... Both are great though
    Of Gemmell's books you didn't mention, "Waylander", the Rigante series, "White Wolf", "Morningstar" and the "Troy" series are also great
    I guess the only real complaint I had with Gemmell is that he tended to recycle plot devices - a flawed hero, a large offsider, a strong female love interest, a siege, Druss in one form or another etc.

      If you prefer a more grounded novel to the more fantasy-driven then Lion of Macedon will always win over Dark Prince. They're both excellent but quite different. I read white wolf after making this video: Here's the review ruclips.net/video/JXKx6zULtSg/видео.html

      @@SeagullsGather At the moment I'm re-re-reading White Wolf as part of my too big to hold up in bed 'Drenai Tales' anthology which is full of little scenes I liked, Legend of Deathwalker with Druss helping Talisman at the fort was the first book, Bison helping the Queen in the forest and feeling an unreciprocated bond with her and so on. I struggled with his Troy saga a little and Sigani or what ever her name was - also found the highlander series blurring a little when I think back to them. Morningstar and Lion of Macedon are excellent as is Echos of the Great Song. Not sure which book I'd recommend someone read first - is it Legend as it was for me or one of the sipstrassi series - I like Knights of Dark Renown very much. In the end, they're all good, just some of them are excellent!

      Well the trouble with a top 5 is there are too many excellent Gemmell books to include them all. Looking through all the comments will help a new reader compile a list of about twenty novels to pick from, all worthwhile, and thats wonderful as far as I'm concerned. Hopefully the video and all the great suggestions from other people will just help spread the Gemmell word a bit.

    Your right most of his work are worthy of featuring in a top 5. However on a review channel, I feel it should have featured his big characters in the list over the single books. Wolf in shadow, waylander & legend for my top three.. KODR definitely a worthy 4th. Maybe Morning Star as my 5th due to the different style in the first person perspective.. A nice worthy tribute though to a great man. 👍🏻
