The ancient Korean haircare was very similar. Hair was shampooed only once a year. The rest of the time it was oiled and rinses and perfumed but not deeply scrubbed. And the old combs were more like flea combs and removed not just luce and parasites, but dust and and dander. Oil and herbal rinses were used to treat problems, even green tea was used as a rinse but also a face wash. Various flowers were also used as well such as gardenia and peony. Shampoo was made with mung bean starch, or in some cases red clay and an herbal oil blend to clarify the hair. Also boiled water or natural River water was used in those days. And hair was kept braided and tied with cloth, and secured with pins. Korean women were known in antiquity so much for thier thick and luscious hair that the Chinese demanded it as a part of tributes by various Korean kingdoms. I get got the best of All my ancestors Polynesian west African and Korean. My hair is thickkkkkkuh! I remember even breaking a few wide Tooth combs.

For those who need to wash their hair every day:
I used to have to wash my hair daily because it would get extremely greasy and itchy, but once I learned how to properly care for my hair and got higher quality products (esp ones with neither sulfates nor silicones), as well as learned about co-washing, I can now go 1-3 weeks between washes without it getting oily/stringy.
It really helps to train your scalp; instead of washing daily, try washing every 2 days, and then after a few weeks move up to every 3 days, then every 4 days, etc. It takes time and patience to train your scalp, but in the end it is so completely worth it!

I tried going "no-poo" several years ago (heard it was better for curly hair), but my hair was literally dripping grease. (I realized later I needed to adjust what I was doing and get my hair to adjust to the point where I was producing less oil.) About a year ago, I tried doing a modified curly girl method, but it was super expensive, and seemed to be a lot of trying out products, if they didn't work, toss them, buy new products, try those out, etc. Lately, with quarantine, I stopped washing my hair as often because I wasn't going out as often...and holy moly. That seems to be the best thing I have ever done for the health of my hair. It's silky soft, thick, shiny, curly, and doesn't tangle nearly as easily. I get a lot of compliments on my hair now, and all I did was stop washing it as often. It doesn't smell dirty or feel dirty, and it's stopped producing as much oil as it used to (because I'm not constantly stripping the natural oils out with shampoo).

    • @KE-hr4sb

@@Jonid5184 I do oil my hair now, but I didn't in the beginning when I was just starting out. If you start washing your hair less often, it will produce more oil for a while until it adjusts, so for a while there you'll feel pretty greasy and dirty and yes, gross. Adding oils to that felt like too much at that point. It's hard to stick with, but once I noticed how much better my hair was feeling, I was determined to stick it out (also, quarantine helped; no one was seeing my hair. Hairstyles that help "hide" transitioning hair: buns are really good at not looking greasy, and of course scarves will hide a bad hair day).
I oil my hair once a week before bed, and massage it into my scalp and ends. I also very gently massage my scalp with the pads of my fingers - no nails, that can damage the scalp - upside down (without oil) every night before bed. This stimulates blood flow, helps promote hair growth, and also helps remove some of the build-up in my hair without as much brushing. I dry brush my hair about once a week (I also brush it in the shower with conditioner in my hair), and sleep with it in a bun or braid to reduce tangling. Brushing my hair less often helped prevent as much breakage and fallout. I used to wash my hair once a week, but slowly transitioned to once every two weeks, once every three weeks, and now I'm at once a month. It does take a very long time to adjust fully, but once it does, the change blew me away.
Good luck on your hair journey!

      @@Jonid5184 Anytime! :)
Dry brushing just means brushing my hair during the day without water or product in it; I try to do it as little as possible to reduce split ends and breakage, but also just often enough to keep my hair from matting up into a rat's nest lol. For me, that's about once a week plus sleeping with it up, so it doesn't rub against my pillow when I turn and cause friction and tangle. When my mom was a teenager, the common idea was that brushing your hair 100 strokes on each side was healthy. I remember my mom's surprise when she came to me saying they'd actually discovered brushing was damaging to hair. When I brush my hair, I start with the ends, then the middle, then the roots. It's a lot more gentle (my daughter has hair to her backside and does this too, she loves it because it's not as painful to brush out).
For oiling, I use about a dime-sized dab of oil on my fingers (My hair is about bra-strap length), then warm it in my palms (rub your hands together until the friction starts to generate a little heat). I concentrate mostly on the ends first, which are the driest, then massage the leftover into my scalp and work the oil through the sections of my hair with my fingers. it doesn't leave my hair greasy enough to need anything covering my pillowcase (my hair naturally tended to be on the dry/curly side, so it really soaks up the oil). If you feel your hair needs more of a heavier oiling treatment, I'd recommend using a sleep cap or one of those heat caps that you can warm up in the microwave (gentle heat helps the oil penetrate the hair shaft, but you don't want to use hair dryers or straighteners etc cause too much heat can damage the hair).
      Take care! :)

@@goldcherry103 I use no heat. Women that grow their hair super long usually opt for updos and buns, but I prefer braids myself. A lot of the flowy and loose hairstyles that are popular are not really conducive to growing your hair long because these create mechanical damage with repeatedly use. Years ago when my hair was mid-back length I would occasionally wet my hair and sleep with it in curlers to get the curled look, but I stopped doing that because it caused tangles in wavy hair. and using a boar bristle brush/horse bristle brush can help extend the days between your washes, as it helps distribute oil that does not reach the ends due to it being curly(I.e if your hair is curly) but works for all hair types. for curlier hair types you can use the brush few days before and on the day you’ll be shampooing your hair. so that at least, the first few days you can go without putting your hair up and showing your curls.

This video is just precious❤️. Specifically for those who wants to do no shampoo water only method ☺️. It's going to be three months tomorrow since I have stopped using shampoo. Whenever I tell someone that I haven't washed my hair with shampoo for the past three months, the surprised look on their face is real😊. It looks and feels like freshly washed hair and smells just like my skin. I wash my hair only using water. And brush my hair using this method everyday for 30 minutes(well almost everyday 😅). I live in a tropical climate and have thigh length hair so never had the courage to go shampoo less until I came across this medieval hair combing method. And it's going great so far. Never had to face the greasy, flaky, smelly problem that people face with going no shampoo water only method ☺️.

I donot know about the western medieval times . But in India, women had thick long hair . Most women had textured hair and not pin straight and they loved it. They would wash their hair with Reetha or soapnut that produces lather like shampoos. Its amazing in washing hair , body , even utensils and clothes. They'd make herbal oils with almost 10-20 herbs , used alot of kitchen items.
Their hair was long, strong and textured with frizz . If your goal is that , you can follow that .
Otherwise modern products aim in taming frizz that they do quite well. While most wavy/curly or naturally thin hair women have trouble growing hair .
I think one can mix and match methods according to their hair type , hair issues and goals .
Keeping in mind that you'll have to sacrifice one or the other things to get a desired result.
I'm aiming for long, thick hair and im nomore fond of smoothness and frizz free hair.
My hair is beautiful whenever i do CG hair.
People are shocked but when i comb my hair , the same people will say i have damaged hair and that i have to get keratin , smoothening treatments.
    It nomore bothers me .

      @AmaraJordan,
My problem, too! That's why I have learned not to use but a 'tiny' amount of conditioner after rinsing under cooler water, and applying 'mostly' on the ends.
Try this protocol on occasion: instead of shampoo put 1/4 c. baking soda in a glass, then about 1/2 - 1c. warmed spring or distilled water, swirl or mix well. Then, prepare similarly using natural apple cider vinegar, and a bit more water, to be used as a rinse.
In the shower, use the BS as shampoo making sure to comb through thoroughly with fingers, leaving on for a few minutes, rinsing well with warm, but not hot, water__then, with cooler water(to smooth down hair cuticles) use the ACV as a rinse using same technique 'combing' thoroughly through before rinsing again with the cooler water. And, of course, towel dry 'gently' before combing and allowing to dry naturally.
It sounds more complicated than it is to do. When I do this I use a glass bottle for each so they don't get too cold before I need them and easier to control how I apply to my hair and scalp. Be careful not to get either in your eyes, that would not feel good at all!
Btw, before I mix my concoctions, I comb(or brush) my hair and scalp in preparation(similar to dry brushing my body) to stimulate skin and remove dead skin cells.
I hope you try this, tweeking the formulas according to length and oiliness of your hair__your hair will feel cleaner and healthier!

I dont use any hair sprays, mousse, gels, oils or leave ins. I have never permed, ever, but Ive colored in the past, though not in these 13 yrs. I almost always keep it braided and pulled up. I use a wide tooth comb every couple days to detangle, smooth, distribute sebum and remove debris (dust and cat hair mostly). I usually have cut it off every ten yrs to a bob for good regrowth but instead, I wont waste the opportunity to have Barbie mermaid hair first. Tomorrow, I am bleaching it and dying it pink, purple and blue. Later, if its "ruined" I will go with a short red bob before starting on a new ten yr growth pattern.

I love this video, because you are right! Those women back in the day didn't have serums and conditioners, and keratin treatments, they had oil! That's what they had!!! Some of them even used bar soap, and their hair was the most beautiful of all!!! My mom used to oil my hair when I was younger and always had my hair pulled back, either in braids or one braid or ponytails. Now as an adult, wearing my hair loose, oiling does not work as well for me. Maybe the braids kept the oil doing it's job right. Braids tend to keep the hair untangled. When I use oil now I find the hair does NOT detangle smoothly. I do better much better with conditioner and dampening the hair, and combing it through. The oil and conditioner detangle very differently. Although oil is probably a better, the more natural and similar to sebum method. I always need to detangle first THEN use oil. Conditioner does cause more buildup than oil, oil belongs more naturally in the hair. Not sure what it is, maybe because I have very dry hair, (I don't seem to have any sebum) but my hair tends to be too tangly. But every time I want to do an oil treatment the tiny tangles at the bottom of the curls seem to get worse. I feel like I am ripping through them. I have to detangle first then oil...not oil then detangle! I love your tee shirt ...the art is so cute, and what all of us Curlies aspire to (healthy curls with length) You should put links to the bamboo brush/ comb / t-shirt etc! I have 4B hair, and I do something similar "but" in the shower under running water. Soak the hair, not just wet it, soak it till its fully drenched, then apply natural conditioner that won't strip your sebum. While under the running water began rinse out of the conditioner while combing first with a wide tooth comb to detangle then I finish up with a very "fine" tooth comb going from scalp root to ends in a downward motion, thoroughly combing every portion over and over to I can feel the smooth waves. I do not separate into sections my hair is all loose, all done under water. T-shirt dry it. Try it you will love it! I do not do it dry, you need the water to help you move the sebum which is waxy down. We as black women benefit highly from moving down the sebum since our coily hair often prevents it from having access to the full hair shaft, unless we help it to do so. Theirs being straight it has more access to move down that's why their hair grows faster so yes the type 4 community needs this in their regimen more than they do. check out @Neki Cakes here on YT, she shows herself doing it in the shower on black hair and the benefits!

Hope that brings more clarity to the process. 💖🙌🙌🙌😺

You can do this! Thinner oils like jojoba, argan, and marula oil to name a few are great for thin hair. I personally use a small amount of marula oil as it doesn't weigh down my hair or make it look greasy

I use argan oil for my super fine blonde hair. I've used jojoba oil as well, but argan oil has worked the best for me. My hair is shoulder length, I split my hair down the middle and use two drops per side, focusing mainly on the ends of my hair. I usually just use it to calm the frizz, but I've also used it as a hair mask that left my hair feeling heavenly.

Finally a long haired curly girl talking about hair care! 👍 Including what brushes to use. The boar's hair brushes that most videos use don't get through my hair. I also really love that a different brush is shown here to get to the scalp. I've always wondered how to get to that since normal brushes don't get to mine. I haven't read the about section yet, but I'm hoping there is a link to buy the brushes.
I also really love that you addressed the smell. No one seems to talk about that. I have had dairy and sugar all my life and have just recently given up dairy. Sugar is going to have to be the next to go. (I already don't eat meat.) I didn't realize that was what was causing the smell. It makes sense, though.
What about spices? Will eating things like onions and garlic make our hair smell, too? If so, I'll give those up, too.
Thank you for this awesome video! 💖

Funny enough, my hair doesn't smell at all anymore. I haven't been shampooing at all. About twice a week I've been washing it with only Head N Shoulder conditioner. And I comb well in the shower. But that's it. And the scalp smell is completely gone. 🤷‍♀️
