Oppenheimer is one of the biggest movies of the year, grossing almost a billion dollars at the box office. And what's crazy about that is that it's a 3-hour drama. There is no Marvel action or DC chases or any usual blockbuster high-speed motion. There's people sitting in rooms talking. And still, it moves faster than most MCU entries. How is that possible? Because Oppenheimer is the ultimate "movie" movie. That's my theory, at least. So, in today's Film Perfection, let's dive into that theory to find more. Why is Oppenheimer such a success and also one of the best movies in a long time.

Ive been asking this for a while but, I would love to see Alternative Cinima Halloween Ends, I think it would be great to see how it could have been great, love your vids and this one is cool ❤
Hey Fil, maybe you’ll make The Last Of Us 2 video this December, at least?
@@oksanapashenko Thanks for suggesting and watching. I just don't really know how to make a full video about games. They take hours and hours to play which I don't have, and I also don't know how to get footage of them. But what did you think about the game?
I'm glad you now it's not your fault, clickbaiters will always find a way to use any succesfull thing for profit. Love the video!
Just keep doing what you're doing, man, because I've been loving your movie analysis videos for awhile now.
P.S. I'll be buying your book later this Christmas. Can't wait to read it 😁
3 hours of talking, one big flash and boom, yet Oppenheimer pumped more adrenaline through my body than most action blockbusters. A true masterpiece.
Yeah exactly. The sequence leading up to the Trinity test was incredibly tense. Easily a 10/10 movie.
True cinema
Perfectly summarized how so many people loved this movie
are these comments serious? I’m so confused by the tone of the video and these comments. the movie was a mess, why is everyone calling it a masterpiece?
Right I feel like people are trying to gaslight me to think it was a good movie
It's really a testament to Christopher Nolan's skills as a director that he was able to make a three hour movie mostly composed of talking, and manage to make it compelling throughout.
Yea he's the goat by far. I've thought that since The Prestige, which I believe to be the greatest movie ever. I'm just gonna assume that Nolan's stupid movies just went over my head an that I'm the stoopid one🤯
Not for Logan Paul
@@mindmaster58which is to he expected, it's like making a trap fan listen to queen
I don't get this argument at all, a ton of movies don't have guns or explosions in them and they're still compelling
@@ironmaster6496 or a queen fan listen to trap
His reaction when the bomb he built to kill millions killed millions was priceless
Nuclear weapons have only killed hundreds of thousands.
I see it more as he always thought he was going to be in control of his creation and once he wasn’t he started to become worried of the situation at face value
That will be Sam Altman in a few years
Never experienced post-nut clarity?
@@rogue9230 Yeah, he was so wrapped up in the scientific wonder of it all he neglected to consider the human and political consequences.
I feel like Nolan is one the few directors who actually makes Movies nowdays. Not just stories or adaptations or products. Works that are made for Cinema.
Edit: i feel like my coment was misunderstood. I didn't say that he is the best director or that his movies are perfect. But he actually tries to make good movies with theaters in mind. Even very good directors make movies that can be viewed at home just as easily nowdays. And ones which aren't like Avatar or anything MCU related are just mindless spectacle. Unfortunatley he is also the only one who gets the funding.
one of the movies of all time
Because he built a very successful brand image. Slap a "Directed by Christopher Nolan" on poster and people will flock in to see what goumet shit he cooked. Studio will give him total control of his project, let him do what ever he want because it nearly guaranteed profit for studio anyway. Not many directors can have that privilege because they couldn't prove a long streak of success.
What the fuck does that even mean?
@@anhkduc7930 This. Definitly a factor, yeah. I think a lot of people don't realize that many directors have to work with a ton of restrictions and might have to change significant parts of their vision because studios dictate it.
This movie was too disjointed for cinema, imo. It would have been better as a three-parter on a streaming service, rather than jamming three stories into one
everything in this movie is beautiful, the music, the effects, even the acting, both cillian and robert killed it in their roles
Indeed, they killed people in the movie.
what a bang
Hey Mr Filmento, your "failure" videos are nothing like clickbait. You do not jeer, you do not belittle. Your anatomies are true explorations into why something you expected to enjoy simply didn't work for you. You are thorough and kind and always recognise the effort and the good ideas that go into something even if the totality doesn't lift off.
Great take on Oppy, its structure, why it follows and satisfies threads of curiosity and interest.
Are we allowed to put forward requests? Brazil by Gilliam?
This guy is nothing like Critical Critical, Mauler, ItsAGundam and the rest of their crew. Filmento's failure videos are insightful and gives me a reason to why I think something was bad and what could have been done to better it.
As someone not so familiarized with the story, I was positively surprised with the approach.
Amazing movie.
Oppenheimer was worth the history lesson.
Alem disso, já tens o canal chamado official no YT, posta qualquer coisa. Fica bem meu, parabéns pelo Tray São.
"I Believe We did"
This Movie's Ending Scared Me More than most Modern Horror Movies could.
true, real scary if you really put a thought on it, it was just two then imagine the effect of hundreds
It really is a history that hasn’t ended. Decades later and we still live with this fear in the back of our collective minds.
Finally now I can have an opinion about this movie
Based it on another ytuber? Pathetic
Here’s one: it’s kind of pretentious. It’s just Oscar bait posing as something more. Too bloated and derivative. I felt like I had already seen the movie as I was watching it.
@@zacky7572 _Very_ unpopular opinion.
@@zacky7572 Here’s another: I think you’re full of it
@@Coach-rq6jx Yeah, but that doesn't make it wrong
I saw it twice in IMAX. During the lead up to the bomb being detonated. My heart was beating out of my chest.
Glad it wasn't just me lol.
During that scene, the theater was more silent than a Morbius screening, even though every seat was taken.
The most terrifying thing was the "BOOM" that came after the explosion, speed of sound, the first time I heard it I put my hands to my head, the 2nd time I just held my arms with closed fists, although I already knew it was going to come. Sadly I don't have IMAX in my country, so the 2nd time, my mom and I managed to watch in on the biggest screen we could find, 2nd time was better.
A three hour movie of mostly character talking with a bomb sequence in the middle and yet it managed to not only be compelling enough to stay engaged throughout, but enough to warrant multiple watches. Nolan and Ludwig deserve all the awards.
I love how Filmento is able to incorporate some sort of narrative or deeper meaning within his videos. Really makes them stick out.
Yeah, I never thought Oppenheimer as actionless, I always felt hooked into the story. Really great video!
On the other topic, remind you when Pandora opened the box releasing the terrible evils into the world the only thing that remained in that box was hope. Nuclear research also brought nuclear medicine and clean energy. And your content also provides educational and entertainment value
All wars bring their good and bad things, the 2 World Wars provided part of modern weaponry which is essential for any army, and many other important everyday inventions, such as the spread spectrum which would lead up to Wi-Fi.
Speaking about that, imagine a movie about Hedy Lamarr, I think it would be kinda like The Aviator (my favorite Scorsese/DiCaprio movie), focusing on Lamarr's career as a movie star, with all the fashion, glamour and gossip from old Hollywood, and then her scientific life as Hedwig Kiesler (her real name), and how with the help of composer George Antheil, they developed a secret communications' system, to defeat the nazis' and ensure victory for the allies, it would be just as interesting as Oppenheimer or The Imitation Game, it would be an inspirational story for women and scientists (women scientists by that mean too), and just like Oppeheimer, she was jewish too, offered confidential information to the US government, due to her fascist ex-husband's contacts.
2023 is a unique year when people got tired of useless sequels (Indy 5), Disney live-action remakes (The Little Mermaid), installments in long running franchises (Fast X), and superhero movies (except GOTG 3 and Across The Spider-Verse), but they were excited about a 3-hour biopic made by Christopher Nolan. Maybe, the success of Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig's Barbie can be a point of going for better, more fresh and author-driven. I want to believe in it.
Yea I think people just want to see more refreshing, original work that makes spending $20 to see a movie in theaters worth their while. I really liked Oppenheimer and Barbie, although my critiques for them are kinda echoed by others. For Oppenheimer, it was hard to hear half the dialogue and it’s because of Nolan’s consistent issue with sound mixing. Loved the music but at times it overpowered the dialogue, especially when you see it in IMAX. As for Barbie, I felt like the messaging could’ve been a little more profound. A lot of ppl thought it was so deep with how it approaches feminist messaging and I thought that it could’ve explored its themes more deeply. But overall I really enjoyed both movies.
Also loved both Guardians 3 and Across the Spiderverse. Spiderverse is the best Marvel movie this year and it’s not even MCU
I find it funny that Strauss entire villain motivation was that Einstein didnt greet him
coz he thought Oppie bad mouthed him😂
Well, it wasn't actually really his whole motivation.
His motivation came from Oppenheimer recommending to negotiate with the Soviets and not building the H-bomb. In addition, he also publicly humiliated him.
I think that Strauss believed that Oppenheimer badmouthed him to Einstein after the fact as a result to find more excuses to hate Oppenheimer.
Oppy is peak cinema, especially for a 3 hour movie where characters mostly just talk to each other and still managed to be thrilling
Whoever thought the lesson from Oppenheimer was “It is what it is.” So true yet still funny. 😂
Dude, the way you integrate sponsorships into your videos is perfect, second to none! I guess I should expect nothing less from a writer as good as yourself!
Damn this movie was glorious. Saw it 4 times in IMAX and it never got old.
The whole movie made me feel on edge, from start to finish. The dialogue, music, and cinematography was anxiety inducing in a good way. This is how I felt the movie went by so fast.
I personally was shocked to find out the actor who played President Truman was Gary Oldman.
Just a great effort on styling.
The way he directed the explosion scene was a masterclass in filmmaking, removing the nat sound and expanding on that silence made the scene much more powerful
Throughout this video I realized how this movie manages to do what it does and keep your attention: it's like a puzzle. At the beginning you turn all the pieces around and then you start sorting them by colors, angle, themes (whatever you use) and finally, when you put it all together, you realize that it's a symmetric movie and the point when the bomb explodes (the only time you see it in action) is the metaphorical shift in Oppenheimer's beliefs (which explains all the questions he is asked during the interrogation).
It's like Inception but instead of going deeper you go back and forth in time. Classic Nolan! Masterpiece of character work and suspense.
As I left the theater many months back my first thought as I recovered from that devastating final sequence was "Woah, Filmento truly is RUclips's Oppenheimer". A sombering notion.
Right now in the anime world we have Frieren, slow paced storytelling that still progresses the character developments in a consistent way with incremental information. I love Oppenheimer for the same reason, slow paced storytelling that delivers up to the climax and doesn't fall short. The cinematography and music go hand in hand that makes us _feel_ the movie, not just looking alone at the screen but sensing what's beyond the screen, almost as if it's tangible. Practical effects go a long way and give a fresher taste, less cgi more traditional.
Frieren is doing something different to mainstream fantasy anime... The story after the story... After the exciting part... While also tackling different topics about the perspective of life and time... And being entertaining while doing so...
My favorite movie of all time. Seeing it in theaters was one of the best movie experiences I’ve ever had.
Oppenheimer is one of those films that even though it's as perfect as a film can be, there's still a lot to talk about. Usually with a film that's good, it's hard to talk about WHY it's good.
Vs a film that's bad or average there's a myriad you can easily pick those apart. With Oppenheimer, you can talk about the score, the cast, the cinematography, the pacing and not just the filmmaking aspects, it makes you question things as well. Makes you rethink what you thought you knew about history.
And that's especially remarkable, given that this is a point in time we all know about to some extent. We know why the bomb was created we know the consequences. But what this movie did was bring home the EMOTION of it. With history, it's all too easy to feel distanced from it. Even with events as recent as the 40s. Oppenheimer makes us realize that time is relative.
That's native advertisement done right! Instead of skipping the ads I'm drawn into the story. Masterfully done
This may very well be Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece.
I can't believe how he was able to make a nuke blast with a fishbowl and some lights, Nolan is a master
Bro one of the cleanest videos done to date, you truly elevate what it means to make an edit a youtube video. Tight script, tight cuts, tight editing and the way you sliced the video the same way Nolan slice the movie, just "chefs kiss" you are inspiring Filmento.
I travelled 300km just to see this movie in a 70mm and it was beautiful.
What a brilliant movie that was. Saw it three times and will certainly watch it many more times. An absolute triumph for Nolan.
Truly the Filmentonheimer moment
Your writing in this video oozes a kind of confidence, almost skulduggery that I haven't seen from RUclips 'essayists' in a long time. That last line reflects that perfectly. Not only do you learn and genuinely apply techniques from the filmmakers, but I'd say your contribution to the climate of media reviews in RUclips elevated the medium of reviews themselves as pieces of highly enjoyable media, regardless of the trend towards negativity.
A friend of mine once said, "Today's meta is not watching movies, it's watching reviews of movies."
I agree with everything you said.
Since your focus is the script I'd like to point out that the incredible music also plays a huge part in making the movie so great.
What Ludwig Göransson did with the score is, in my opinion, just as great as what Christopher Nolan did with the whole movie.
How you put surfshark ad in the video was GOLD.
ALSO, your anatomy of failure are the only videos that i often binge watch. Even rewatch. Plzzz neverrrr cancel them. It like a proper film school here. Thankk you so much for that series. And keeeeeep making more anatomy of failure videos.
I think what keeps it going is not only the change in timelines and scenes but the music. Notice there is music throughout the entire movie. Even heavy dialogue scenes. There's never really a quiet sit down and talk moment. There is always music. Sometimes, to the point that it annoyed me, and I couldn't hear what the characters were saying. I did enjoy the movie towards the third act when things got more dramatic and exciting, but for the first 2 hours, I was like please Nolan, turn the music down.
Agreed. 100%. My wife and I had to put napkins in our ears from the music. And, since we couldn’t read lips, we missed 80% of the dialogue.
@@AdmoreMethod Bad for you, fortunately I live abroad so I watched the movie with subtitles, I never had the problem about Nolan's sound mixing that many people point, but that might be because I don't have IMAX theatres in my country (they were promising to inagurat them, but it didn't follow anywhere), maybe Bane in The Dark Knight Rises comes close to that, but I could still understand what he said because of Tom Hardy's irish accent, funny.
@@jesustovar2549 LOL That’s awesome!! I think I would’ve very much enjoyed the experience if I’d been there. ☺️👍

ill never forget that this movie had me think that the poor scientist might press the big red button and cancel the bomb test.
I knew he wouldn't, and yet i was so taken in by the movie that i forgot that i knew what had to happen.
what an incredible work of art.

One thing which was overlooked is the soundtrack used for this movie. It is so unique and immersive that almost drowns you completely in the thoughts and struggles of Oppenheimer which makes you move along with him throughout the movie. For those who have watched it, just close your eyes and play the soundtrack and all the scenes of movie will cross before your eyes, and that is the power of music.

Coming back to 1:04. Filmento nailed it.
There are 7 Oscars and Oppenheimer won 7 Oscars.
I just watched Oppenheimer again since seeing it open weekend. Fantastic movie.
Hopefully a movie winning all the awards without any power fantasy in it will get through the appropriate skulls.
awesome vid! love how you broke down the main structure of the story into sections. really shows how masterful Nolan is in his work as a visual storyteller and writer, really making real cinema

That epic rap battle of history, cameo at the end had me dying😂
Love the ERB reference at the end 😁
Nolan is one of the few directors that can get people in theaters from his reputation alone. That’s overall a good thing for the art form of cinema. Regardless of one’s opinions on Nolan, it’s not common for a director to achieve that level of respect. That being said, he can get in his own way when he makes films. He can get in the weeds for the sake of pursuing technical achievement and slow the pace of a movie to a crawl. Sometimes it really works to stretch out drama and build tension, and other times it can come off as trying to make something appear clever for the sake of trying to make his films seem intelligent.
I mean, who is anyone to criticize the guy in a RUclips comments section with credibility? I’m not saying I think I could do better than the guy. When I look at examples of his biggest movies though he’s shown a willingness to collaborate and treat his scripts to tighten things up.
A movie with just mainly dialogue makes you feel so many emotions between curiosity and peace to them fear and absolute despair. While you hang on just every word every scene every sentence just moving the flow of the story in a way that I’ve never felt before in a 3 hour movie experience. While having the nolan style visually and score wise it’s just crazy. I bought the blu ray and a better tv on Black Friday and I’m waiting for my tv to get delivered so I can watch that blu ray on the best tv I can.

When I started this video I thought that 20 minutes would be a long video but it flew by because you broke it up into sections and weaved a single question throughout which I just had to know the answer to - I am now very glad that your answer is that you will continue to analyze movies!

Another great example of mini movies inside a movie is Forrest Gump. The movie doesn't even have a plot or end goal, we just see different sections of his life and each of them could have it's own movie made (childhood, cripple into a football star, Vietnam war hero and hippies, table tennis master, shrimp farming, running across US,....).
Have you seen A Christmas Story? Not a bunch of mini movies, more like side plots to progress the main story.

I like how Nolan makes something simple can be intriguing in any movies that he made.
Like the stomping sound which also can be interpreted as the sound of explotion on Oppenheimer and Rise chant in different language on Dark Knight Rises.
Filmento talking about how he's basically Oppenheimer really reminded me that I'm actually Ryan Gosling

When people asked me what I thought about Oppenheimer, I told them. “It was great. It was three hours of talking and yet they somehow, someway made it epic.” While I’m slightly bummed that it didn’t reach the billion dollar mark, I absolutely love that this film became a giant success of 2023. 👏 👏 👏

This is the best Oppenheimer breakdown on RUclips!
One of the things that Oppenheimer did for me was a sort of recontextualizing. I've grown up my entire life with the knowledge that nuclear weapons existed but after leaving the theater they were not just weapons anymore but eldritch entities. A leader somewhere, thinking they're losing their grip on power might go scorched earth. All of life, gone. Just because reasons.
I was reminded of why they're terrifying weapons.
Hehe, love how you included the Thanos vs Oppenheimer rap battle at the end. Great review too.
The ERB reference at the end came out of left field, but i am here for it.
the outro is gold
I like that Mickael Bay is standing there like : "WHAAAAAAAAAT???, How?"
7:45 “X C(word) Girlfriend, lol…. Love the subtlety, lol
Youˋre videos always help me understand the movies so much better. I realized why I thought this movies was boring af and way too long even with your mentioned mini-movie stuff. I had watched a one hour documentary bout oppnenheimer and how the a-bomb came to be. Thus all these questions Nolan put into peopleˋs mind I had mostly answered straight away from memory. It is definitely not a movie I would watch again.
