The 2023 MET Gala has officially arrived, and it was very interesting, to say the least… considering the, shall we say, SIMPLE effort from most of its celebrity attendees. This year’s MET Gala exhibit was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” with a red carpet theme “In honor of Karl.” There seemed to be a lot of less-than-dazzling Chanel-inspired looks, with even simpler hair and makeup. Sit back and relax as Johnny and Kevin break down 39 of the night’s BEST and WORST looks!

You know what I really love about this? I don't feel like I know the first thing about "fashion" but the way you all talk about it makes me realize that we're seeing the same thing. Maybe it's down to the way some professionals communicate about fashion that makes me feel like I don't know much about it. I guess I'm trying to say it was an accessible conversation that left me feeling a part of instead of clueless!
I feel the same. Without these two to explain things, I'd have just chocked it up as a Vegas showgirl furry convention.
Apparently Giselle’s dress was a vintage Chanel designed by Karl Lagerfeld that she wore for a photo shoot at Lagerfeld’s house 16 yrs ago. So while the dress may not have been overly stunning, it was meaningful for her. Love Johnny and Kevin!! ❤ We need Beautiful & Bothered merch!!!
Kidman also wore her Chanel dress that she wore for the commercial she was in, there are some sentimental pieces there, which is nice

I don't think anyone will forget Blake Lively in 2022 in that incredible coral/green color changing confection. That was absolute perfection.
Karl Lagerfeld was problematic for sure (as was coco) but he really did breathe life back to Chanel. Karl used ro wear the fingerless gloves and mostly wore black/white. I loved the men’s version of the wedding dress!! Doja cat referencing KL’s cat choupette was fabulous. I couldn’t choose between her and Anne Hathaway for best dressed.
Absolutely agree. I'm not sure everyone got the reference to his cat 😊 but that was so Doja. And his cat may not have been as horrific as he was. I kind of liked that she gave a nod without celebrating him or Coco.

Some of these Met Gala looks were INCREDIBLE. I loved listening to you guys review them. You should definitely do this for fashion week in Milan and Paris.
I’ve seen other people already start to comment this, but I REALLY wish Karl Lagerfeld wasn’t the theme. Yes, he did so much for Chanel; but he was still kind of a garbage person. I was super hoping they would have done Vivienne Westwood as the theme with her recent passing. She is an influential titan in the fashion world that DESERVES to have a Met Gala night. Also, COULD YOU IMAGINE the looks, the hair, and the makeup for that theme!?

💯 % agree. My best friend and I watched together (bi-costal him LA stylist, me in DC) and for every look we talked about what we would have done for that client if the theme was WESTWOOD.
Vogue/MET really skipped an opportunity to have a killer red carpet.

I would also have loved a Viv themed Met Gala, however, these galas/parties were planned way way in advance so that the designers can make plans once the celebs and others were on the guest list. Maybe they can have a Viv themed next year, hopefully.
I love we got an extra episode this week! Make no mistake. Making Kevin a cohost was an excellent decision! The chemistry yall share as friends makes this podcast what it has become. Yall are both so beautiful and I am without a doubt bothered 🔥 !! I find myself liking the episode before the first 5 seconds bc I now know what to expect even before it's been served!

Omg, this was the most fun! I literally watched this sitting so close to my T.V. so I could see the makeup up close. I used to work counter for Laura Mercier and Bobbi Brown and your podcast fills my void of makeup chat. I just finished your last episode, had to watch it in chunks having my kids around, but it left me yearning for more, and all of a sudden I get this extra episode. I cannot get enough!❤❤❤❤❤❤

You and Jen had a beautiful friendship for many, many years where others had faded. I am so sorry for the loss of your family (I believe if you've been friends with someone for decades, they're your family, period). On a little bit more of a serious note, you should both be incredibly proud of yourselves for executing the very difficult task of being honest, insightful, generous and sassy without being that bitchy, entitled little know it all that tends to flood our "for you" pages with their unnecessarily cruel and uninspiring critiques. Being able to combine your honest self admitted ignorance in the fashion/theme of the MET Gala with your sassy humour, incredible knowledge, never ending skill set,unstoppable artistry and your undeniable chemistry between yourselves, is super difficult and is definitely where a lot of commentary content creators fall short.
You are both fabulous and have managed to find your true calling, Loving you both and I'm so excited to see you both grow and continue producing evermore fab content!

i loved this. it made me miss the old days when you would watch the red carpets and see what people wore - but without the meanness. nothing wrong with not liking a look and you two gave some great insight as to why a look did not strike you. can't wait for future reviews. 👏👏
like that's the thing, you can critique a look without being shitty about a person. "I don't like this for her skintone" is way better than "wow she looks ugly"
As a super fair skin girl myself I definitely agree with the thoughts on Elle fanning’s makeup with all the black outlining her look especially around her face she looked really washed out with almost porcelain doll-ish eyes & cheeks that didn't quite get there against all the black outlining her everything just clashed 😫😖
So, what are we supposed to do? I am pale as paper, unskilled and overwhelmed😭
Selma's dress has a wonderful flamenco flair. I don't think she needed bigger hair, I think she's needed a hair piece that looked reminiscent of the flamenco head pieces, bright red with some rhinestones or diamonds to complement the dress.
It would be great if you could show how you would do a Met Gala look for yourselves, guys. 😊😊😊😊😊

I think the " pink plastic " earrings are actually Swarovski crystal earrings, seen them on the website the other week....they retail around $650.00.

The part of Kim K's outfit that killed me was the waist. The color was off, and the texture was all wrong. Imagine that outfit but the waist was done to look like a pearl. Give it some shine, some luster and draw attention to that cinched waist. Instead, you get a color tending towards grey that does not work at all. It's like she put the dress on and decided it was too naked and added something to make it modest.
No. Don't do it. Either commit to the "I'm only wearing pearls" nude or make the waist part of the pearl look. If the center looked like a clamshell opening with a v down to her bellybutton I would have just died. Such a missed opportunity.
1920s makeup used cobalt shadow and, as you said, lots of blush.
Edit: I think the men really did it this year.

Lilly Collins is stunning and looks like a young Elizabeth Taylor. Even with the hair and make-up it feels like vintage Liz.
Amanda Seyfried, you couldn't have said it better. The shadow on her eyes... that color made her look ill. Such a gorgeous woman, but that makeup artist (many of the markup artistS to be honest) did NOT do the damn thing.
They never ever match her pearl skin either, she needs pastels!
Anok Yai, Naomi Campbell, and Rihanna were my favorites. I've been a huge fan of Anok Yai since she broke out in the fashion scene. Definitely supermodel of millenium tier, in my book. Absolutely stunning!
Naomi Campbell in the toga-inspired dress that was just the perfect juxtaposition of masculinity with the armor-themed top and femininity through the soft, elegant drape of the pink fabric that perfectly complemented her skin tone, like you both mentioned. Chef's kiss!
And then Rihanna ... that was the first look I saw post-Gala and once I saw the eyelashes on the white shades, I was sold. I'm curious to see if that becomes a new streetwear trend because it's actually kind of brilliant.
Ok...gotta say, the details of the Choupette fur suit are incredible. They even got her nose pad right. She couldn't attend herself, of course, so this came close.

...and this should go without saying, really, but The Fifth Element costumes were designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier, so whoever made that outfit also missed the Lagerfeld brief by a very embarrassing mile 😅
I agree with y’all about Viola Davis. She is a beautiful woman and if the makeup artist would’ve incorporated more of that beautiful pink in her makeup it would’ve been show stopping.

While he isn't my favorite person by a long shot, I have to both commend and feel terrible for Leto. I had a gig where I had to wear a mascot costume for a day and Dear. God. In. Heaven. Those suckers are HELL. Even with the money I'm sure he spent on it (far more than the one I was in, 100%.) it had to have been a forced death march thru hell if he had to wear it long. You can't see in them, you are carrying sometimes up to 100Lb around you, and the HEAT. Not to be gross, but it was so bad in mine I was literally standing in a good half inch of sweat sloshing around me. Made it 5 steps to my car and promptly passed out from heat stroke. (His likely had cooling fans and such whereas mine, I couldn't even wear the cooling packs as they are made for men and not my big bust) I'm not clausterphobic, but it is just ALL around you, you can't really see well, you can't really HEAR well no real grip or turn ability left in your hands and all you are doing is breathing in your own slowing overheating body. (If that all sounds so horrible anyone is thinking 'than why the hell did you wear it? Broke and it was $90per HOUR. You suck up what you gotta.) The guy did the thing, looked like a bit of a twat, but I still have to give him credit for not buckling on the carpet.
Ironically Karl Lagerfeld hated pink so it was funny to see a few people wore it. Patrick Ta did Gigi’s makeup.
I'm thinking the lighting was terrible for the Gala this year. It was softer and glowy last year. All the stark white just made everyone look corpselike.

Doja Cat and cult lord crazy Leto referenced Choupette - Lagerfeld's cat :D As some people with tiny details. The gloves were always a Lagerfeld signature, as the white shirts and collars. The flowers are the Chanel peony. The wedding dress vibe was a nod the the Chanel brides at the end of the runway shows.
I think the very first look was trying to go for Morticia Addams. They did that super bright on the eyes and forehead which is exactly how she looks in the movies. They wanted to create the illusion of light shining only on that area. Was it fully executed? Nah. But I see what they’re going for. They nailed it with the outfit though!

I loved the video. I watched the live stream of the carpet, the looks on video definitely showed up better. The lighting on the carpet in pictures was draining a lot out of the looks.
Ok you keep talking about women “of a certain age” and too much makeup on the eyes. Johnny, could you do a tutorial on older eyes??? I know it would be really foreign because you are so young and handsome but it is hard enough to feel good getting done up but I agree it usually feels too heavy. Please, any suggestions ❤

Karl Lagerfeld always wore one glove, no matter where he went and Cara was one of his main muses, so I think that is why you only see her wearing the gloves
He wore a pair, though, not just one. Supposedly he didn’t like his hands so covered them up with gloves, but used fingerless ones so he could still sketch.

I actually loved the fact you guys didn’t know all the Karl references because you took away that crutch that most (if not all) Met Gala looks lean on. Sorry, good fashion AND bad fashion isn’t subjective. You two so expertly pointed out principles of color, fit, design, and proportion to explain your opinions rather than just going, “hated it!” You two are so freaking smart and well spoken and I learned so much!

I am so glad you said what you said about women's eye makeup always being that black eyeliner all around the eye and no colour or lightness! I always think that and I can't understand why makeup artists do that! Favour to ask: Due to a remitting/relapsing disease I've been battling for 30yrs (still here so far though 🤞) my skin is an embarrassment. I have no idea how to use any make up appropriately. Would you at some point perhaps do some make up tutorials for aged skin?? I'd be forever thankful ❤
