  • JFRD responded to a large, approximately 500,000 sq ft, apartment complex under construction. Upon initial arrival, crews were met with fire lapping out of the 4th floor balcony area of the center of the building. Because of the stage of construction, absence of intrinsic fire barriers, and lack of fire protection, this fire advanced and engulfed this entire structure rapidly.
To the south, was the second phase of construction of this building with another building approximately twice the size of this one only separated by a parking garage and certainly an exposure for crews to consider and protect.
Also, to the north of this construction site was a residential neighborhood that was only separated by a wooded area. A call came in from that neighbor claiming her house and her neighbors house were also on fire...so a separate assignment was sent to that address...the good news is that their house was not burning, but did have melted soffits and some cracked windows due to the extreme radiant heat. The wooded area also needed to be attended to by crews as trees were catching fire.
There were no injuries at this fire and the cause was turned over to the Bureau of Fire and Arson Investigation.
