No Defensive Coordinator ever came up with a good scheme to diffuse Gronk in his prime. He was indefensible - the most dominant TE the game has seen. Great hands, speed, size as a receiver and an excellent blocker. Great personality too - players like Gronk definitely help the NFL’s popularity.

I think the only schemes that ever worked were the "Maybe we have Kam Chancellor or Bernard Pollard to try to kill him?" type of scheme. I'm not saying they were intentional, I'm just saying the only way they ever stopped Gronk was by knocking him out of the game.

    • @jonashworth3827

because the personnel they had available couldnt match up with him. if you put a cornerback to stop the pass, they just run the ball behind him. if you put a lineman that can block, he sheds the blocker, the linemen next to him pulls the block, and gronk goes downfield for a passing route. its an absolute nightmare matchup, because in all honesty he was large enough and strong enough to just block the linemen. he had zero bad matchups and dante scarnecchia teaching him blocking techniques, alltime great linemen coach for 60+ years.

His greatest attribute, maybe overlooked, was his ability to adjust to the ball inflight. I can't remember a tight end better in that regard.

Put a corner on him, way too small and can easily overpower. Put a linebacker on him, he’s too fast for them. Safety? Too small too. Just completely over the top good

Seeing a man that’s 6 foot 6 catch a ball on the run at the shoestrings was amazing but that was just one of the things that made him great. The stats will miss his grade A blocking ability and it’s why in time people will mistake someone else at the position as the greatest bit for those who watched all the games or review all the film it’s undeniable that Gronk was the Best TE to ever live and maybe a top 10 receiver of all time at any position. No doubt he will be in the hall of fame soon. So glad we got to see him play again with Tampa bay. If he was able to stay healthy it would have been a gift too fans. Too often the greatest athletes have their careers cut short due to injuries. Bo Jackson was another who was the greatest at his position but the numbers will never tell the story.

@@vipahman Right?! Brady has chapters. The early 3. The Moss-Welker years. Then Gronk and Jules. And now Evans and Godwin (and for a while Gronk!). Still the best TE ever and Brady might only have 6 rings without him, but he's Brady's favourite weapon, not his first, last, or only

@@vipahmanGronk also had amazing stats during those two super bowls with the patriots with over 170-180 yards 15 catches and 2 touchdowns. He also won a Super Bowl with Brady again with the bucs, for 6 catches 67 yards and two touchdowns. I think the point is that Brady and Gronk are a dynamic duo.

@@vipahmanI mean, you can definitely thank him for keeping the team in it till the very end in LII though. That one was lost to poor defense, not offense.

he had the largest catch radius ive ever seen. could catch it bent over by his shoelaces mid stride, while also able to leap up and grab the ball one handed, back shoulder, spinning to see the ball at the last second. way up in the air. he averaged 25 yards per catch. just absolutely insane.

The Gronk is definitely in the conversation if not the best tight end blocking and catching the ball that the NFL has seen he is absolutely a beast I'm not a New England fan at all I've been a Dolphin fan since 1971 but the the Gronk is the best in my opinion to play the game and it seems like a fun dude

I know being a Pats fan I’m biased, but who was a better tight end? Nobody else comes to mind. Toughest guy on the field!
