Only sabre fencers know how exhausting points like this are.

So true. That’s why I love fencing. Just pushing myself to my limits with my favorite fencing buddy is so much fun.

They are psychologically taxing if you are at the losing end of the point.
This is why I picked up epee. So I can just bounce and disengage and not have actual exchanges.

It's mandatory to grab your knees after a point like this and say "Damn!"

As a newbie I have a Question for other saber fencers do you think crossing your feet on retreats is a bad habit or apart of strategy? My coach has been telling me not to do it because it can take away my balance for counterattacks but I don’t know if he’s saying that because he also coaches foil where that counterattack seems more important or crossing is just for higher levels because they move so fast.

It depends on what you are planning to do. It is good to combine both.
To get away quickly from a failed attack you can cross your feet and use this lost of balance to go even faster. But as soon as you want to defend and fix (it's in french I don't know the English term) your adversary, you need to stay low, stable and come back to normal position with your shoulders and armed arm leaning forward to threaten the guy. What is good is to train going really fast by crossing feet and go stable immediately and reversely...

it is illegal in saber to cross your legs. people used to just run at each other lol
