  • OPEN ME FOR MORE TIPS!
Can you count how many times I say "common" in this video? Yeah.
First of all, I wanted to make a note bout the ILGWU tag. You CAN date a garment just by its ILGWU tag but it takes a lot more research and time, and it's something I couldn't cut down in a succinct way so I cut out most of what I said about the tags in this video. If you're curious to hear more about that, maybe I'll make a video about it! Otherwise, you can look here for more info on how the ILGWU tag changed throughout the years. vintagefashionguild.org/label...
Garment tags before the 1940's are pretty rare, as up until the 1950's handmade garments were probably just as common if not more common than mail order or store purchased.
And, I didn't even get into the fabrics of the eras because that's another video in and of itself.
I also didn't get into the style of garment tags (aka the fonts used) because once again... that could become a video in and of itself. But, if fabrics and tag fonts are things you all would like to hear about, I can certainly try!
But, these are the main things I look at when I am dating a vintage garment. It may seem like a lot of information all at once, but the longer you do it the quicker it is. These days, I can literally sniff out vintage and gauge a garment's age by the feel of the fabric. When you get down to it, vintage garments smell and feel different than their more modern post-80's counterparts!

I like how you adressed, that you can't used serged seams as a certain way to date a piece of clothing to after the 60s/70s.
I have a few things from the 30s, 40s and 50s (and I've seen a few other pieces as well) that I know for sure were made in a period between the 30s and 50s, but they do have serged seams. In my experience, you mostly encounter vintage items with serged seams, if they are serged for a reason, like the fabric being woolen and otherwise it would fray a lot.
It's also a good thing to keep in mind, that especially if you buy from an experienced vintage seller who work together with a tailor and have the items fixed and restored, they might choose to overlock the seams now to extend the lifetime of the garment.

Yep! That's oe of the things I look at most in vintage, but you can definitely tell the difference between 70's and post 70's garments are serged versus their earlier counterparts. The stitch is a bit different, and the usage is definitely different like you said!

I love that you discuss about the silhouette of the eras, that is good info for someone who cannot afford reproductions or real vintage garments. It gives someone the opportunity to find vintage looking outfits in modern stores.

Great video! I would love to wear more true vintage, it's just impossible to find things that fit me! Instead I make most of my own clothes from vintage sewing patterns, which I figure is the next best thing! Since the clothes aren't an option though, I buy lots of vintage accessories like hats, purses, and jewelry. A video about dating those would be nice too! It can be hard to tell if something was from the 50's or the 80's in accessories too!

I really appreciate the information about garment labels! I think I'll start putting labels in my home sewn garments, and I'll list the year it was made in particular, as well as any other info I think is relevant.

I found a blouse in my grandparents attic. I think it was my mom's I'm trying to ID the decade. My mom was born in 1929 and married in 1951... There is a remnant of the tag, so I know it was store bought. I see what looks like pinking sheared seams, but they are frayed, so they could have been surged. I wish I could post a picture here so you could look at it and give a guess to the decade. Liked your video. It was very helpful. I hope you and your baby are well!

Hiya, since this is old I’m presuming you have a new little one, congrats! You got the eras correct, I’d like to help w/ a few tips (been collecting/selling vintage & antique *everything* over 45-yipes almost 50😳-years). In the 30s the bias cut became popular, you’ll often find the skirt part of a dress bias cut (think Jean Harlow, those amazing silk slips & dresses- I’ll never part w/ my extensive collection, so dreamy, flattering😃), 40s you were spot on. 50s think Dior’s “new look” style w/ the full skirt. 60s yep, mod, short, many geometric patterns, but “housewife” styles as you showed as well (more early-mid 60s younger “housewives” got “hipper” as the 60s progressed along w/ Women’s Lib). Late 60s into 70s things got more daring. Psychedelic prints (like your dress, I would think it’s that time period, defo not “mod”), “hippie” looks, bell sleeves v wide & flowy, fringe, wide legs & bell bottoms (60s was either straight or later flared), loads of pantsuits, and welcome to “unisex” designs! Just last week I found EIGHT *ginormous* bins of vintage from the 30s onward that I had in storage, forgot about, how insane is that 😳? I’m now in the process of cleaning, prepping so I can reopen my Etsy shop (some might go on Poshmark). While it’s crazy the amount of work, it’s like Xmas as well since I literally don’t recall many pieces (that rarely happens, even if I do a buyout)😃... and I’m so insane I’m still hunting for more! Fab video, great info for beginners, good job! Have a lovely day! Jet 🧡🎸🎶⚡️

This was a great video! Half the fun of buying vintage is trying to date and locate the origin of the item, at least for me, hehe
Is the last 60s dress, the orange flowered one, labelled NPC Fashions - Warren Pennsylvania, by any chance? I think it's the sibling of a dress I own, except the flowers in mine are blue and green; I found it with the original belt last September at a flea market.

    • @WithLoveKristina
      @WithLoveKristina  6 лет назад

Same. I love researching and figuring out where things came from! The white dress I used for an example of pinking sheared seams is a dress by Ceil Chapman who designed for Marilyn Monroe and many other celebrities. I was floored.
And yes! That one is an NPC Fashions dress! I would love to see yours!

Wow, I’m dead! What an amazing find.
I keep toying with the idea of making a few videos of my own, provided that I overcome my awkwardness/rustiness with spoken English. And though I love all decades, I dress much more like a mod, I don’t know how much it would fit into the YT vintage community.
Anyway, I can snap a couple of photos and DM them via Instagram, much quicker ;)

I think you forgot to put that list in your description box about the other RUclipsrs who do vintage stuff? Or the video by that lady (Carolina Zebraska?). I would like to be able to find them, since I'm just getting into this vintage thing and need to feel out the community and learn what the general buzz is about. I'm most interested in home sewing, but obviously also need to understand the styles and functions of the clothing first.
