@@rodgerwill1042 Yes, they market and sell them through agency (AD's and Grey dealers). They could easily mark up the prices to match gray market or sell them directly themselves. Grateful for business is the part that irritates me about Rolex. I have quite a few modern Rolex watches, but the brand is just so arrogant. No effort to interact with fans, not even nice to their AD network. Snobby, but it is like they forget they are producing a mid market machine made mass produced watch. Virtually every other brand in the world is more grateful for sales, because Rolex have reached a point like a long term relationship where they just take it for granted. The problem they have is, just like any other long term relationship where a participant feels like they are taken for granted and not appreciated they typically leave.
Omega sitting in the background to an extent for years, leaving Rolex with enough rope to hang themselves, all whilst consistently improving the quality of their watches.
Now Omega are making their move. Each new release you see now will be higher quality and more innovative than a Rolex watch - and simultaneously targetting young people so they think of buying an Omega as an aspirational piece. If they pull it off there shall be a generation thinking Omega cool, and Rolex is an Uncles watch. Good luck to them, Rolex need a kick up the rear after years of complacency, arrogance and the way they treat new potential customers, nothing short of disgusting

They could venture to expanding the concept to the Seamaster Omega x Swatch collab too: there are 31 varieties of the Sea theme for them to think about (e.g., Atlantic, Mediterranean, Red, Baltic, Arabian, South China, Celebes, etc). Another one is Railmaster collab series: the likes of Amtrak, British, Eurostar, Trenitalia, Oriental Express, SBB, etc). Better yet, the Constellation collab series would do great with so many possible variants.

    1. Talks endlessly about the Crazy Colors
    2. Ignores the plastic materials or that it weights 29g, the weight of a kids watch.
    3. Automatically says it great value based that it looks like speedmaster with omega logos. But no mention of materials, internals or build quality.
    4. Tries to say it is an Omega watch to justify the $250 price, but in fact it is a Swatch watch that looks like a Speedmaster.
    5. Most images that are shown are "instagram" images.....it looks one way in controlled images, but very little content on how it looks in real life.
    6. Will never say it is a Fashion Watch, even though the profile of the watch says "fashion watch". IF this was made by a Chinese company, people would be screaming "cheap homage" copy.

I’ve been an Omega fan for years now. I have several vintage pieces and of course also the “real” Speedy.
This MoonSwatch is not supposed to be luxury. As far as I can tell, the only people getting bitter with it are the people that buy a watch as a status symbol and not for the passion of collecting time pieces. It’s a genius marketing move. Giving young horology enthusiasts a starting point. This inevitably will put Omega in peoples minds who maybe never even considered this brand for a luxury time piece.
Omega flipped Rolex the biggest of birds with this. I love Rolex as well, but their scarcity game is very off putting and frustrating.
This one will definitely become part of my collection once it’s available online.

Not just marketing...there is data acquisition going on here. Even if Omega made NO money on these watches, they are getting thousands and thousands of data points that explore consumer preferences that they can segregate geographically and use to design their higher end pieces for specific markets. There is a high-powered quant guy watching this release very very carefully. Of course, it's also a long term play to introduce younger people to watches. How many kids between the ages of 10 and 14 are going to get one of these for a birthday or some other event? These watches would be a very very smart release even at a short term loss.

Being British and having lived in North America for almost two decades and now living in mainland Europe I see a different perspective in buying watches here. Most people here buy watches emotionally and for fun.
In the UK people buy more expensive watches to brag and impress and in North America that as well but more importantly as a sign of achievement.
I can see multi millionair old money sorts sporting these in Monaco and the South of France as a fun thing and enjoy them for the fun aspect.
I own a bio ceramic Swatch and it feels very different to the normal Swatch plastic. It is more ceramic than plastic and has a wonderful silky smooth feel very unlike normal Swatch plastic and more like my Junghans Ceramic watch.
The plastic component is derived from the castor plant.
My friend owns one of the ceramic IWC watches and the feel of the case is very similar to that.
Once the hype dies down I will get one of these and probably knowing my sense of humour it would be the Uranus version, it just takes the piss royally out of the sorts of people who take all of this so seriously.
Oh, and I have never had any colour bleeding issues with mine!

this is my third comment so i promise my last BUT 2 points-i dont think it makes the OG moonwatch boring, because i always thought it was a little bit boring 😂 but i have 5 Omegas (2tone SMP300M, sedna SMP300M chronograph, aquaterra worldtimer, speedy moonphase and darkside of the moon) i never fully considered getting the regular moonwatch-until now! this release made me want it. along with like 8-9 of the swatchs (when the price drops to retail or below-which it WILL)
last point-i been sayin since the day the designs leaked that Omega either already will or definitely should release identical watches with normal (zirconium dioxide) ceramic cases and manual/auto in house movements. make em limited (like 1,000 of each color) and build on the hype of the MoonSwatch release. would be cool, and if done right would help elevate Omega even more after the january release and now this 🤯🤯 i really hope they do it and that i can get one lol 🤞🏼🤞🏼

The only way we can settle the plastic not plastic debate is if JerryRigEverything goes at it with his mohs picks and razor blades. If chunks come off the case, it’s plastic. If it just scuffs up and can’t be cut, it’s clear the two thirds of ceramic do something.

Thanks guys. Really thoughtful episode. Enjoyed it. I agree with Michael that Swatch should have offered these with much better (ideally 10bar) WR because if the idea is to offer masses an option to enjoy the watch then at least make them wearable in water. I would have happily paid more for it. G-Shock offers it! I just wish Swatch should have paid more attention to quality. There is a well known issue with bleeding blue case back color from the Neptune watch and someone has posted the video showing that the second hand does not align well with the indices. Also, Pluto is the only watch with black indices and uses four different colors for the indices, dial, bezel and lugs! Does this mean that is the only variant without luminous indices? Great content. Keep it coming.

The Speedmaster for me is one of my all time favorite watches, a grail of mine that I know one day ill own. Thought this can bring you closer to it, yes its not the original, thought its original in itself. Its unique and a really hype historic moment in the watch community, never have we seen something like this. This has been an amazing marketing, whoever thought about this wow, and they also clearly underestimating the people. This has 2 sides of the coin...flippers and grey market hurts the industry, we can clearly see it here. I hope this isn't limited and in the future they can sell it online. That would be a hit back to all those people, but also feel sad for those who bought it above retail. At the end if this brings more new watch people its amazing. Still its an amazing watch to own in any collection.

Great video, guys. I also agree that this is a brilliant move by Omega, and will not cheapen the brand in any way. I believe that every owner of an Omega Professional will also want one of these just for the hell of it, or maybe all of 10 of them, because, why not? I also think that the person who has his eye on a Speedmaster but can't quite afford it yet will absolutely love one of these watches, and it will only sate their appetite for a genuine Speedy at some point. If Omega continues along these lines, I can see them doing a Seamaster series in bio-ceramic, but I think they should probably stop there. Too much of a good thing will just bore people at a certain point, but this idea will be a beautiful feather in their cap that could truly enhance desire for their luxury pieces.

It will cheapen the brand - Omega was not selling enough of their 3k (they do get cheaper on sale) to make sense - so this was a marketing plan to drive revenues in hopes to get people to go from a 260$ (overpriced plastic watch) to a 3k watch. That is a big jump and while it will work for some it really won't be as good as they think.

This is a short term marketing success for both brands. Stole the thunder from W&W 2022. Created brand awareness for non-watch geeks. Long term, this stunt will dilute and cheapen Omega's luxury brand image. Speedmasters now start at $260, think about that for a minute. Also, Neptune is bleeding color on to skin and the chrono hands are misaligned. They are a $10 watch with a $250 name. The reality is they are cheap, disposable plastic quartz watches.

There's a danger to this as well. I now own two Tag Heuer's, and I decided to get the Monaco recently in black, but more importantly in quartz. Because my (quartz) Kirium Chronograph is not only beautiful but INSANELY accurate (it's off by say 2 seconds every 4 or 5 months). The MoonSwatch is going to teach a new generation that they don't need to correct the time on their watches every 2 or 3 days. Or it's going to spoil them into surprise when they learn that accurate time isn't included with the expensive automatic movements the Swatch group would like to Gateway them into. I could see a majority of a whole new generation of watch enthusiasts simply writing off automatic movements as silly. That would be bad for the industry as it sits today. Just my two cents.

  • @david-jv9ds
    @david-jv9ds 2 года назад +1

    Moonswatch- brilliant strategic move!
Think about it in the context of the Casioak. An entry level “plastic” quartz watch that mirrors the aspirational AP RoyalOak. Yes, G-shock has long had a loyal following but what created the frenzy and pushed the price of the GA-2100s up on the secondary market this past year was when it became the “Casioak” Phenomenon. It was Herology’s Targé moment (everyone’s favorite big box store)
Now was AP hurt by the Casioak? probably not. but they also certainly didn’t gain from it either…..but Casio/G-shock sure did!
Now put yourself in the shoes of those Swatch executives looking out over their portfolio of brands and icon time pieces and you can quickly come to the same conclusion I believe they did in the moment. The Speedmaster was vulnerable to the same type of plastic homage but with two distinct difference from the AP/Casio story. 1, the difference between a $200 quartz watch and a Speedmaster makes it more Vulnerable then the AP example…But 2, Swatch Inc Has the means to get out ahead of this before someone else makes a run at their crown jewel. If Omega is going to miss out on the sale today to a plastic clone it might as well be a SWATCH.
I believe at the end of the day the synergy's between the two companies without any IP barriers in the way were able to create a better, truer version of a classic (with a bit of SWATCH fun added)
I think at the end of the day these Moonswatches will be credited for seeding entire new generation with a deep love for the legacy of the Moonwatch.
Omega was willing to bet on that future sale.

It may do absolutely nothing for them now, but will pay dividends in time. The kid will be a fan of that brand forever and will always aspire to own one. If and when the time comes, no matter what may be “better” on the market, they’ll get a car from that brand first. The amount of kids and young adults that are about to own this as their first watch is beyond comprehension, and most of them will want the “real” Moonwatch when they inevitably get hooked
