- The Krewe of Chop & Brew gathers for a wet-hop brew day to wrap up this year's series on "Growing Hops at Home." We pick hops straight off the bine and stuff more than 10 pounds into a double-size batch. Thanks to Ted W. for hosting this motley bunch for a great brew day. Let us know about your experiences with fresh/wet hops in the comments below. [Original postdate: October 3, 2013]

I love Brian Adams. "who me,,what,, I'm just sitting here throwing in a bunch of hops while Chip is talking it up..."
Bryon over there just continuously tossing handfuls of hop cones into the kettle 😂
Like a boss!!!!!
Love the guy idly tossing a hop in every now and so,it the way to go. Awesome
I've seen every episode and each one is just as entertaining and educational as the last! I could cancel my cable subscription if I had a new episode every couple days hah
Hop plants are so beautiful.
I loved how Brian kept throwing in hops the entire episode!
A hopgasmic episode of Chop & Brew ... Woo Hoo !
I need a beer crew like this!
Yooooo Bryon throwing hops in had me dyin!
Living the hop life with no regrets! Hahahahaha.
I highly enjoy chop and brew. If anything, it is highly entertaining and informative. All in all, you guys have gave me more info into home brewing. Thanks and I look forward to more.
Big brownie points for listing Elsa as Exec. Producer, good husband.
Shhhhhhh. You can't say that, dude. You're gonna get us all in trouble! :)
Yeah, DonO!
Another awesome video! KEEP EM COMIN!!!!!
Favorite episode to date! That was fantastic! Nicely done. Cheers!
It is so nice to see the gang together again! I look forward to all your videos; keep up the good work.
Love these group-brewing episodes Chip, the BTV vibe is thick in the air!
Very good episode with the gang!
Another great episode by the C&B crew! Looking forward to whats next!
Always a pleasure watching your episodes bro! Keep them coming! Love brewing here in New Mexico with my buddy also. Great way to get together chill and drink some homebrew.
Next year can you get a green tutu and call yourself the hop fairy.
Seriously, keep these vids comin!
I want to grow my own hops but the climate here is not good for it. I'll just watch you guys.
This summer I'm going to harvest way more of my ? Hops. They made good beer.
I recently stumbled upon Chop and Brew. Glad I found you guys again. These are the most entertaining, and informative, episodes on brewing. I am so geeked on growing hops this year. Thanks for putting these episodes together!
Nice episode, next year I will be definitely be doing a wet hopped beer, with my second year hops. Cheers.
Some people (like me) really like the plant matter/vegetation flavor imparted by the fresh hops. I wait all year for fresh hopped beer! Though I almost exclusively use them for flavoring at the 20/15/10 minute mark.
4 years later... I got my first batch of home grown centennial SoCal and I can't wait to use them. Next year deff gonna try wet hopping.
Thanks for the "first wort addition" tip.
I typically disassemble the outpost, rinse off the hop debris, fill a glass measuring cup with hot water and PBW and let soak overnight. Rinse and repeat. Literally. You will know all the hop debris are gone once you soak the outpost in PBW and the water doesn't change color or show particulates in the water.
What did I just watch? Is this the “Big Bang Theory” of home brewing? Just stumbled upon this channel. I like it!
Love to hear it. Thanks for the shout-out. Enjoy the catalog of episodes and we'll have new videos out shortly!
Definitely think dried then frozen (or at least stored in freezer) would be fine. The cold will kill anything you would need to worry about. I also think for the most part as long as the beer is fermented and has alcohol present, they would be fine for "wet" dry-hopping as well. Just my thoughts.
That bine was seriously a half-inch in diameter. CRAZY CHINOOK ROPE!
Really Hop-Madness!! :D
Expect more. Thanks MC!
Thanks!
Good luck, he's a BrewBot.
Man..... Why do i have to live in brazil? I want to grow hops! This video is the definition of Hopgasm! Thanks Chip!
Try a bunch of different strains, one may mutate and acclimate to the climate and you'll have created a new cultivar and possibly become rich and famous
We have some sour beers for a hopeful future episode. Thanks for the reminder!
Sampled the 1056 batch yesterday (10/6/13). And now I have no-more enamel left on my teeth. But damn, it's good.
I must say: I heart Melissa Rainville. Cute as a bug's butt and a brewmaster to boot? SWOON...
Yeah, Don!
Beautiful lol .... cheers 🍻
did my $5 recurring donation!!!!!!
love it
bad ass and pain are still the best!!!!!!!
Blaaammm! I dried mine on window screens ( 2-3 days). Vacuum packed and to le freezeeeer off they go!!
Waiting for better times = got no time to brew now. Dauyym shame, my friends, dauyyym shame!
chop 4 chop, brew 4 brew !!!!! \m/
He's actually up in Duluth, MN brewing at Canal Park Brewing. Melissa Rainville, another badass NB alum, is now brewing at Fitger's. They were just down to take part in the hop insanity!
thanks.
The crew is planning to meet up later this month to taste them. Camera(s) will be rolling.
346 Brian Adams. Here I'm pushing this big ass chinook hop bine to put in the kettle...lol
Beautiful! That bine was huuuuge.
Harvested my chinooks into a wet hop as well. Dry hopped w 2oz of homegrown dried hops which leads to my question:
What is the best/easiest way to clear hops from the out post on a corny keg? :D
Major Paynes, y'all!
i love hops. Great episode but to cheap to tip that why i homebrew!
wet hop so cool
I preparing some seeds to grow in tropical Singapore. will let y'all know what happens.
They boiled and bittered with wet hops? I hear that is not a good idea, not because you don't know the alpha acid, but because you will extract flavors that are not ideal. You might get more of a "plant matter/vegetation" type of thing than just the hop goodness from the lupulin. I have actually experienced this myself when using wet hops. I think usually they are just used as a post-boil steep. But, YMMV. Cool episode though. Fun to see all these wet hops in action! Love it.
What's your take on dry hopping with homegrown hops? Opening yourself up for possible contamination, or don't worry about it? How about hops that have been dried and frozen before being used for dry hopping, are they any safer?
What's up big sexy? When are you going to do a Brett episode? Love your stuff man.
That was pretty much his job that day! :)
Maybe do tasting notes on this? How many gallons total did you wind up making? Looked like only 10. That is an unbelievable amount of hops in 10 gallons!
King moved to Twin cities? What's he up to now?
chop the hop, brew the mew
Has there ever been an issue with the dog eating a hop cone ? I'm waiting for my neighbor's daughter to move before planting any since she's taking her dog with her.
crazyiest thing i have ever seen, i pay 3 to 3,50 for two ounces of hops and you guys pour 800 pounds per brew of wet hops, im in
water weighs a lot sir
Whose got sticky hands? Raise your hand!
I hate to hear that Logan. My seriously deepest thoughts to you. I can't imagine that. We are always careful and Ted's dog specifically have no interest in them. Like Charlie P.
RIP, good dog.
What isn't clear is have you dried the hops already or are you using them right off the plant.
In this episode they are straight off the bine - wet, fresh and juicy!
did you introduce the 4 legged partner that cant eat the hops?
Beer salad.
why use an entire years hop harvest on one brew? i understand it needs to be used but cant they be stored long term and used as needed?
+dannyzep92 Bryon was tossing just a small fraction of Ted's hops in. Ted had plenty more for drying and storing, not to mention past year's supply still in the freezer. Just something fun to do. And the beer turned out nice.
+ChopAndBrew awesome! I can't imagine how hoppy those beers must've turned out using that much. And it's always good to have some saved as hops seem to be on the price rise
Chris is far too smart, he must be destroyed! LoL!
I'm Jealous 3:40 mark
Oh my. whos weimaraner is that?
That's Shekka "the home wrekka". my pooch.
That young lady is hot.
Be careful about having dogs around those hops! My Lab died a few weeks ago after i made a fresh hopped beer. He ate a few cones and died 3 hours later. bad deal
Ok it's a party - no problem with that. But any valid, repeatable, scientific conclusions which can be drawn about the outcomes of methods and choices of hop? Duh, throwing hop into a boil can only give you bitters, not aroma - but you know that, right?
Hops towards the end of a boil (and beyond boil while cooling wort) can certainly impart flavor and aroma beyond the more mouthfeel-based bitterness.
Music is F'n annoying.
boerboel313 Sorry, dude. Can't afford to buy any real music.
I dig it. It reminds you that these are just some dudes brewin' some brews. This is how 99% of the home brewers out there do it.
boerboel313 Chip Rifts are what make Chop & Brew even better, like oldskool BTV!
Steven Heffelfinger Thanks dog!
Yeah, DonO!
