I’m always watching your videos to get ideas since you load out with a family with a similar sized vehicle (smaller even!) so maybe we can both get ideas from each other!
I loved the parallel between the 2 yr old filling his dump truck and Dad filling his bins. Great compact kitchen. As a family of 4 (& a dog) with kids quickly getting bigger than parents, compacting gear is an ongoing task for sure. I agree, the type of trip, destination, journey, & who we camp with depends on what we take. We flew & camped last year which was a great exercise in taking only the necessary. I could have brought less kitchen gear but happy with having a Chuck box kitchen with flip down counter - a fast counter is key - and one that drawers do not pull out over top of & that sits beside cooler/ fridge. When camping with friends nearby still enjoying towing 10’ cargo trailer and having 5 lb propanes & propane fire/ double burner. But on road trip utilize roof box & one burner (dual propane/butane) stove.
Yes! Flying and camping would be a test of packing only necessities! We just got back from an 8 day family camp trip and it's nice to make a list of things to add and things to get rid of. Always refining.
Good effort. Need xtra tote for food i suppose..? The butane stoves are good. Dont like cold mornings so need to warm yr canister. The cylinders do not last long time...i budget 1 per day but i do like my cuppa teas. Got the fold down keep cups. Good. I dont like eating drinking from plastic but sounds like it works well for you. Happy camping. :)
Instead of putting lose ice in your cooler freeze water in plastic drink bottles. When it melts you have another source of water and the food doesn't get water logged. You really need another jerry for water. Occasionally they split or leak. You don't want to end up with no water if you've only got one.
I picked up some colored duct tape at a dollar store and put a different color strip on the end of each tote so I would know at a glance what was in each tote: green is kitchen, blue is tarps & stakes, red is emergency supplies & tools, etc.
Great vid thanks 😸 I'm doing a running battle setup I go out & just chuck stuff in my ute, learning wats best for my sort of camps\trips (minimal space, trying to leave truck able to carry 5 ppl😸) and evolving as I go - essentially totes, roof usage and tent - thats what I got from your vid, something I've already begun to find revealing itself 🤠so am now keeping watch for tough totes that aren't price ripped. Thanks again from Southland New Zealand 👌
Awesome glad I was able to help inspire a bit! My setup is ever evolving, but I still use a lot of the items shown in this video every time I go out. 5 people is a full load out!
Few years back I set up a toolbox with my camping gear. I’m finding it bulky and am ready to put my stuff back into a tote. Save space and pack more items together
There are definitely pros and cons, the nice thing about totes is they’re simple, modular, and easy to take out for daily drivers. I’m brainstorming a mixed setup soon!
First time viewer Great video We have the Gazelle t4 Pretty happy with it... Any issues with it being up top? Also the awning is 80 something minus how much for upgrades?
If you look in the comments I responded to someone else, but it looks like it’s $180 now… prices have increased. The upgrades ended up being about $20-40 I can’t remember. Replaced all four leg joints with better ones from IRonMan 4x4. No issues with the tent on the roof, I actually wrap it in a tarp though! Just as extra protection and then I use the tarp as an extra ground tarp for the tent. Thanks for watching, let me know if you have any more questions!
I just checked and noticed I didn’t link it. Here is the “cheap” awning I have. www.walmart.com/ip/Yescom-6-6x8-2-7-6-x8-2-Car-Side-Awning-Rooftop-Pull-Out-Tent-Shelter-PU2000mm-UV50-Shade-SUV-Outdoor-Camping-Travel-Beige/334508338
I might also drop from 2-burner to 1-burner stove, I'd hardly notice the difference in 90% of my camping situations and two-burner stoves are horribly unpackable lol
A vehicle walk around might be nice to do sometime, there’s a few things I’ve done that I never mentioned on the channel. Definitely check out some of my more recent camping videos if you want to see the more refined version of this camp plan. Thanks for watching!
Ive learned to minimize my gear for overlanding. 2 large plano cases, and the rest in the back. I see overlanders bring half their garage and kitchen lol.
This is awesome video. Thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed it. I use old Canadian Army Barrack boxes that have locks and hinges. I tie them with ratchet straps but when it will be a bit warmer (I am in Yellowknife) I will figure out a way to attached them with some hardware. Cheers. Eric
Nice video! I have a few of those items. I need to upgrade a few things before summer for sure though. I'm really interested in the Gazelle tent. And I think I'm gonna get the smaller version of your same awning as well.
DM me on IG before you get the awning, I might have some tips for you (briefly mentioned in the video). The Gazelle is great, but doesn’t pack down small that’s for sure!
I got the same burner stove for $15 at a Asian grocery store with a pack of 4 butane cans for $5. You don't have to buy all of your gear at Amazon and there are a lot cheaper options as well
Yeah it’s just hard to post links to an unnamed Asian store for others to look up what you’re talking about. I hear you though, I do try to shop local when possible. Odd nuanced stuff though, it’s hard to be online.
I've been looking into these storage bins. I also have an Everest two burner stove. By any chance do you know if it will fit inside this storage bin? Thanks for the video bro.
Can u post a link of the foldable chair please. I’m looking forward to start upgrading my camping gear.... I will appreciate a lot... thank u for ur video .
"YETI". haha awesome. Sold...and subscribed. Haha! Same ideas here. outdoor adventure man. You're having the fun anyway I can see it, why not turn on the camera! Good stuff.
Thanks man, it’s gotten a bit more refined in my more recent videos too. Cooler is a 55qt, pretty big! Overkill for most trips. The chairs are Cascade Mountain Tech and I got a 2-pack from Costco for $65. You can get them from Walmart and other places too, they’re kinda a budget Helinox.
At the time of this video I was on stock suspension/wheels and bigger 285/70r17 tires. Since then in more recent vids I’m on a 3.5” lift with a different set of 285/70r17 tires. 👍🏼
Nice setup. I ordered a Rola Vortex for my 2021 4Runner today. I’m going to coat it heavily with Rustoleum pro grade truck bed liner spray when I get it.
No worries I’m still around! If you go back to video “DIY roof basket mounts” from 2020 I go over the custom mounts I made. I also have a more detailed post and my precious mounting solution on my IG @Grizzlypath
I noticed in a previous video that you have some sun shades covering the windows for when you sleep in the car. Where did you get those? Or did you make those yourself?
I use a pop out bucket that you can get from Walmart or similar, it has a drain on the bottom and when folded fits in my kitchen bin. Soap is in the kitchen bin too, it’s an organic safe soap so it’s a bit better to rinse out into vegetation.
What would you suggest for streamlining camp gear for a husband and wife, a teen and 2 toddlers? Lol. We like to cook on the fire but I can't find cookware big enough that folds up
Very tricky! Ultimately you gotta just do your best to try to think through your uses and go into stores and browse what might work. Each camp trip you’ll refine your system. If cooking is a priority then I’d recommend a nice two burner propane grill with a 5# tank to run it forever!
Thanks! Great video. Do you know if I can stack those plano totes as you did in the video on 7 seater 4runner? I'm in Canada and SR5 here only comes out as 7 seater. Since 7 seater has a little raised floor, wondering if I can stil stack 2 planos.
Thanks! They’re 68-QT look at my pinned comment for a link to them. They do not have dividers on the inside, but I’ve considered making some out of something. Thanks for watching!
Wondering what kind of roof rack you got on there. I’m also assuming those are factory crossbars as well. How much weight have you been able to store on top with this setup?
Great question. It’s a Rola Votex basket with the extension welded in to make it longer. It’s mounted to the stock rails (i have a video showing how). The basket itself is 70lb hard to say on gear weight but the Gazelle tent, and then the totes probably adds up to about 125lb or so (some totes aren’t full, also mostly pillows and stuff). So we’ll say 200 in this setup? The OEM is rated for 300lb dynamic, but I still didn’t like having that weight up there if I didn’t have to.
I feel like you have said you have kdss, could you tell me what kind of lift you have in detail and how much lift it gives you in front/rear? I have kdss 4Runner and have seen where you shouldn’t go over 2.5 lift in front & 1” rear. I’m asking because I like the way yours sits and looks level.
I’d have to measure but I’m at about 3” front and 3.5” rear. I’m using Ironman4x4 Foam Cell Pro suspension with standard springs. So far I haven’t personally had any issues with KDSS or anything.
It's a Rola Vortex basket with extension, I added a link to it in the video description for you. It's definitely a bit more pricy then when I bought it in 2018, but I think it's still one of the best bolt on baskets on the market! Edit: Plenty of room to open my sun roof.
Great video, I am considering those same plane totes. I just found your channel so I'm sure I've missed it but where is that slide out table from? I loooove it.
They held up great! I’ve known some people to buy some gasket for a water/air tight fit at the lid, but I never had any issues with intrusion just using them as is. In wind, rain, and some snow.
The Gazelle tent has continued to work great. For my small family the ability to set up quick to have shelter has been very valuable. As well as being able to stand up and have lots of space vs a RTT (non-snow use). In the winter or solo camping I sleep inside the vehicle as it’s easier for me. But I’m happy with my purchase of the tent still! $275 seemed crazy when I bought it but prices have definitely changed.
That extra thing goes outside so you can have an inside/outside temp. However, the one I bought wasn’t waterproof so it died pretty quick. I’d tuck it somewhere out of the weather if possible.
how do yo strap the gazelll tent , just straight over from roof rail to roof rail , do you specifically need the roof rack cargo that it is on , or will it work with just cross bars ?
With this Rola basket I just tossed it in the basket and it was wedged between the totes. The totes were strapped down. With my new rack I use ratchet straps right on the rack.
There are actually quite a few, but they definitely cost a pretty penny. Decked doesn’t make one, but if you search you’ll find a few outfits. Most people go custom.
Great video, enjoyed your efficiency of gear and how you pack your 4runner. Question what brand of roof rack are using. It looks like you keep your original 4Runner roof rails and your roof rack some how ties into them. I like that idea as you can probably take off the roof rack when you want to. Tk you
Thanks John! It is a Rola Vortex roof rack with the additional extension to make it longer. If you watch my DIY Roof Basket Mounts video it shows how I attach it so I can quick disconnect and stuff.
I thought I replied earlier sorry! Look up the Jetboil 5L Pot Lid and the Jetboil 10 inch Fry Pan. Definitely the most expensive part of the kitchen kit, BUT it does pack down very nice.
When I had the basket in this video the tent would be held in with a ratchet strap. Either also wedged between the bins or by itself. With my current rack I use ratchet strap to securely hold it on.
Little different today, just an overview of my new packing game plan! If you're curious about upcoming DIY projects, feel free to skip to 17:32 for a teaser. Thanks for watching!

This was awesome to see a super minimal family camping setup. Makes me think about what I might be able to cut out of our setup... 🤔
Love your setup. I saw a few things I want to do. Trying my best to optimize my setup for maximum comfort without bringing unnecessary stuff.
I’m always watching your videos to get ideas since you load out with a family with a similar sized vehicle (smaller even!) so maybe we can both get ideas from each other!

@@GrizzlyPath what do you use for your chuck box?
Grizzly path thank you for this beautiful presentation you are definitely mastering the art of packing the essentials for camping .❤🎉👍👏🙉🙈🙉🌟
Best camp pillow cases ever! Made with humor and love!
haha!
Very informative and well put together. Love how well organized everything is.
Thanks Ken! I’ve made a couple improvements since, but the overall setup is the same and has worked great since!
Cool setup, very compact; have a great time camping!
Thanks! The setup has changed a bit in the last year or more, but the rear tote system has stayed the same!
Every time I watch this - I find another idea - thanks
I’m glad! It’s been quite a while and my setup has changed many times over the years, but it’s still nice to explore different ideas.
Canyon coolers are the bomb!!!! Have 3 and love them all!!!

Thanks for taking time to share.
Right now we use our Honda Odyssey for trips, but I’d love to start using my 06 4Runner at some point. Thanks for sharing.
The Odyssey sounds like a great trip vehicle! My parents are thinking of outfitting one as a mini-RV.

Check out the Cater-Gator Coolers wheeled. They are used by restaurants for catering. Also for marine use. They are much superior.
Never heard of them, I’ll check them out!
Your dog is a twin of mine!! Small border collie lab mix! Mine has a little white on her paws and neck but the face and body is similar!
That’s awesome! I’m actually not sure what my dog is mixed with, but she’s half lab, the other half could be some border collie but maybe more haha.
Nice set up. Solid rig !!!
Great vid. Lovely fam too. Your son is adorable.

Real world. Great video!

They’ve worked great so far! Pack down small which is why I like them.
Awesome setup! Love the vid
Quick question, what boxes do you have mounted to the roof rack in the thumbnail?
The same brand boxes that are shown in and inside the vehicle! They’re totes, I think I have a link to the exact ones in the video description too.
Great load out!! Good job on the video too
Thanks! Always evolving of course, but it’s nice to give people watching ideas and inspiration 🤘🏻

Thanks dude!
Great just ordered a couple great thank you
They’re good totes, and if you ever change your mind they make for good home storage too so you can’t go wrong.
Awesome setup! Any chance you can share what chairs you have? And what size Canyon cooler did you end up getting?
Thanks man, it’s gotten a bit more refined in my more recent videos too. Cooler is a 55qt, pretty big! Overkill for most trips. The chairs are Cascade Mountain Tech and I got a 2-pack from Costco for $65. You can get them from Walmart and other places too, they’re kinda a budget Helinox.
Great setup, mate. Can you comment on your tire size and whether or not there's some type of lift on the vehicle? Looks a tad burlier than normal.
At the time of this video I was on stock suspension/wheels and bigger 285/70r17 tires. Since then in more recent vids I’m on a 3.5” lift with a different set of 285/70r17 tires. 👍🏼
Did you make or buy that incredible trunk table? I'd love to get one of those..
I made it! If you go back in my videos I have one where I put it together.
Nice setup. I ordered a Rola Vortex for my 2021 4Runner today. I’m going to coat it heavily with Rustoleum pro grade truck bed liner spray when I get it.
Sounds like a great plan! I ended up welding it all together to really seal it up also.
@@GrizzlyPath… that’s my plan too. Weld it at the joints and add a side plate for rotopax cans and spray it down.
Hey I know this late. How did you mount the Rola vortex to sit low?
No worries I’m still around! If you go back to video “DIY roof basket mounts” from 2020 I go over the custom mounts I made. I also have a more detailed post and my precious mounting solution on my IG @Grizzlypath
I noticed in a previous video that you have some sun shades covering the windows for when you sleep in the car. Where did you get those? Or did you make those yourself?
Great question, I made them and a video showing how out of Reflectix! Check it out and thanks for watching.
do you use the clear bin to clean your dishes? where are the supplies for cleaning? Soap etc.
I use a pop out bucket that you can get from Walmart or similar, it has a drain on the bottom and when folded fits in my kitchen bin. Soap is in the kitchen bin too, it’s an organic safe soap so it’s a bit better to rinse out into vegetation.
Not sure if you even have the vehicle now, but do you remember the width between the plastic wheel arches inside the trunk?
I think it’s 43.5” but I’d have to remeasure.
@@GrizzlyPath thank you.😀👍
Nice setup man! Living out here in Kitsap as well and hoping to perfect my camping gear like this.
What camp chairs are you using? The fact they fold that small and fit in the tote intrigues me.
www.amazon.com/Cascade-Mountain-Tech-Ultralight-Highback/dp/B0B1CWYJLY
They’re not my favorite chairs but they work okay and they pack down small which is important to me right now.
How do you strap down the gazelle tent to the roof rack?
I use either (2) cam straps or (2) ratchet straps. Both seem to work, but obviously I can get the ratchets tighter.
I noticed you still have the stock rimes, did you need spacers? Also, did you have to change the control arms when you added the lift?
Stock rims, I have 1.25” wheel spacers but they’re not required for anything. I changed out the UCA with the lift.
Excellent video! Do you recall where you purchased the front license plate holder?
Thanks man! The front plate holder is OEM.
Thanks! Great video. Do you know if I can stack those plano totes as you did in the video on 7 seater 4runner? I'm in Canada and SR5 here only comes out as 7 seater. Since 7 seater has a little raised floor, wondering if I can stil stack 2 planos.

FYI I upgraded the hinge joints with units from Ironman4x4. Also looks like the price is up +$100 from when I bought mine…
Can you add a link for your shovel mounts?
Look up “Quick Fist” and you’ll see them! They’re a great affordable option if you can mount them to something. Also make them in different sizes.
Hey man, awesome video! I am wondering how you painted those OEM wheels? I like that color and would love it on my Mag Grey!
They’re plastidipped! 1-can black base and 1-can color per wheel for a solid thick coat that has held up for almost 2 years of use now.
Nice job
Wondering what kind of roof rack you got on there. I’m also assuming those are factory crossbars as well. How much weight have you been able to store on top with this setup?
Great question. It’s a Rola Votex basket with the extension welded in to make it longer. It’s mounted to the stock rails (i have a video showing how). Glad it’s useful! It’s a Rola Vortex roof basket with the optional extra extension to make it longer.

@@GrizzlyPath thanks man! I appreciate the feed back and enjoy the videos.
Sweet set up. I’m trying to find the same quick fuse that you have. Where did your find them?
Fists
Just look up QuickFist on Amazon, there are quite a few options- I got a mix option, but honestly only use the shovel/axe size ones so far.
what brand roof basket do you have? That is nice! does it interfere with the moon roof when you open it?
It's a Rola Vortex basket with extension, I added a link to it in the video description for you. It's definitely a bit more pricy then when I bought it in 2018, but I think it's still one of the best bolt on baskets on the market! Edit: Plenty of room to open my sun roof.
Love the yeti. Got the same one. 😂
The Yeti got it done for a long time!!
What are the measurements of your cooler? I’m wondering if my yeti 45 would fit with the 4 tote setup. Also are they the 56qt Storage boxes?
68qt Plano totes and my cooler dimensions are: (WxHxL): 15.25"x16.25"x27.5" which ends up being a perfect fit.
Great video, I am considering those same plane totes. I just found your channel so I'm sure I've missed it but where is that slide out table from? I loooove it.
Thanks! I made it, check out my DIY video to see how if you’re interested.
Can you send the link to your previous video with the totes on the roof please?

There is one, otherwise I have some pics on my IG I think.
Great video Zack! How were those totes in the weather when you had them on the roof?
They held up great! I’ve known some people to buy some gasket for a water/air tight fit at the lid, but I never had any issues with intrusion just using them as is. In wind, rain, and some snow.
Nice setup. I use the Plano’s as well. Are you still liking the Gazelle tent? I’ve been wanting one for awhile.
Dopes video!
Do i need to use that other piece that comes with the thermometer
That extra thing goes outside so you can have an inside/outside temp. However, the one I bought wasn’t waterproof so it died pretty quick. I’d tuck it somewhere out of the weather if possible.
@@GrizzlyPath thanks for the reply. I guess my real question is does the thermometer still work without that piece?
@cruzinthruspace yes it does! I still use mine.
how do yo strap the gazelll tent , just straight over from roof rail to roof rail , do you specifically need the roof rack cargo that it is on , or will it work with just cross bars ?
With this Rola basket I just tossed it in the basket and it was wedged between the totes. The totes were strapped down.
With my new rack I use ratchet straps right on the rack.
Great video
do you know the supplier or a link for the storage boxes thank you
They are Plano 68qt bins, I might have a link in the video description for the ones I used!
is there any pullout cargo system for 4runner...decked etc.?
There are actually quite a few, but they definitely cost a pretty penny. Decked doesn’t make one, but if you search you’ll find a few outfits. Most people go custom.
🤙🏽 good vid.. subbed ✔️
@@GrizzlyPath thank you.
please share the link for the pan/pot . thank you
I thought I replied earlier sorry! Look up the Jetboil 5L Pot Lid and the Jetboil 10 inch Fry Pan. Definitely the most expensive part of the kitchen kit, BUT it does pack down very nice.
What is your wheel offset? Looks great
Thanks! Uhh, not sure what offset the stock wheels are but I also have 1.5” wheel spacers on as well.
Im a suv lifer too 👋🤟🤙
Those camp chairs, what were they?
Costco “Cascade Mountain Tech Ultralight Highback Chair” they pack down small and are pretty comfortable.
Whats the lift height and tire size? Looks just right. 👍
3-3.5” and 285/70r17, thanks!
What do you use to tide up the tent on the roof rack?
When I had the basket in this video the tent would be held in with a ratchet strap. Either also wedged between the bins or by itself. With my current rack I use ratchet strap to securely hold it on.
