This lens and the recent releases of the Sony A7IV and 24-70mm f2.8 GM II really have me rethinking my entire main setup, which is the Nikon Z6 with Z lenses 14-30mm f4, 24-70mm f4, and 50mm f1.8. I shoot real estate professionally and the power zoom feature of the Sony lens would be such a huge help in implementing more video walkthroughs into my workflow. I know you used the A7siii here which is likely better at video than the new A7IV, but the zoom examples you showcased here are stunning. The Nikon 14-30mm f4 (which I've owned around a year and a half now) is similarly priced and, based on your examples here, the optical quality looks the same or at least comparable to me. I can't see myself missing the extra 2mm at the wide end enough to preclude me from switching over. It's too bad I have another several F- and Z-mount lenses that I would have to part with and replace. Decisions, decisions! Great review, very well done!

I read about this early today and have been looking into what e mount lenses to consider on the ronin 4d, I put that Tamron 28-75 on it the other day which was my first time putting the counterweight on and just adding the extra weight on made it feel too heavy to operate for anything over a few minutes whereas I've shot 45 mins with the little Zeiss 35. This zoom is not only light (no counterweight) but that internal zoom means you won't have to adjust the gimbal when zooming in or out. Too bad everything cine-wise from sony is backordered until 2050

Best review of this lens out there. Question in case you see this comment: I noticed a small "hiccup" when you have enabled optical+clear image zoom in the zoom range. When you reach the limites of the optical zoom and clear image zoom kicks in there is a slight pause. Is this deliberate to show where the optical stops and where the clear image zoom takes over or there isn't any way to get rid of that slight pause?

    • @networm64

  • @kayjaylin

I was considering this lens for full frame, but I found something interesting in that I have been testing the E PZ 10-20mm F4 G APS-C lens on the A74, and found it to be lighter, and more flexible than the 16-35 PZ on the A74 specifically for outdoor/vlogging work, not so much the a7siii
    The upsides are:
    1. a74 S and Q 4k60p has NO CROP and maintains the effective range of 15- 30mm given (apsc to full frame conversion). This is a hack only on a74
    2. 6.3 oz/178 grams. Half as light as the 16-35mm f/4 PZ (353 g (12.5 oz)) - according to sony -world's lightest. Makes for a great 10 bit light vlogging setup on a74 + b1m or b10 mic + zoom controller or handle from sony
    3. Zoom range is slightly narrower, but still a positive when combined with clear image zoom and digital (15mm-35mm on clear image zoom, with digital its 15mm-78mm)
    4. You can use 4k on the 10-20 apsc on a74
    5. Almost half the price.
    The downsides:
    1. I tried it on my A7siii, but you can't get 4K with APSC, only HD.
    2. Aside from A74, its better for APSC cameras, not full frame

Are you able to offer any insight on this versus the Sony 16-35 f2.8 GM, just on how big of differences there are in image quality and low light performance for video while completely disregarding price as a factor. I know it’s not going to be a common question. I got the GM a few years ago when my focus was stills, but now I shoot much more video. I also have the Sony 24mm 1.4 GM which you probably know is very similar in size to this new F4 lens. I have a smaller gimbal (Zhiyun Crane M3) and it won’t handle the GM. Your review makes me feel inclined to sell the GM and replace it with this F4 because then I get the 16-35 range in a small, discrete form factor that I can use on my small gimbal. I’m just wondering how noticeable the drop in image quality and low light performance will be going from the GM to this. Any thoughts?

    • @MrSeanicles
      @MrSeanicles 2 года назад +1

I mainly shoot in the dark. For me, going from an f1.8/f2 to an f2.8 lens is quite the jump in ISO, I can imagine the F4 from the f2.8 would also be a large jump and personally I'd prefer keeping the larger 16-35mm f2.8 even if it's a bit of a nuisance on a gimbal.
I just wish they made this lens f2.8 as well so it would be a no-brainer.

The only wedding photos I took was way back in the 1980s. All stills. But from watching videos of those doing weddings, the PZ lens is much smoother when zooming. I have the crop sensor PZ 18-105 f4.0 and it is a blast to use. Zooming with a remote or the rocker switch will make zooming far less than jerky compared to manually zooming, ug. It's kinda like the difference between ice skating or walking in mud.
