I don't think he will be the final boss. Just like in Bloodborne's dlc, Lady Maria was on the front cover, but wasn't the last boss. I think that role belongs to miquella.

The theme of it being a heroic tale has not changed. The character of Messmer shown in the key art is a good example. He is another hero. The chair Messmer sits upon is the same as the ones shown in the fight with Margott the Omen King in the main title, and he is on the same level as characters like Godrick, Malenia, Radahn, Rykard, etc., and is referred to as a child of Marika.

I don’t know it’s possible a lot of the characters & lore behind the expansion was already created when Elden Ring was still in development but they had to cut certain things from the base game most likely they purposefully cut important parts for any future expansion! GRRM did help set up backstories for these demigods so Messmer may have already been a character who just didn’t make the cut for the base game! Can’t wait for the release so we can dive into the world of this shadow realm!
I think he’s the cast out firstborn of Marika & Radagon and maybe he was the one who was originally at volcano manor (there’s that one painting of the red haired dude in the room where you fight Inquisitor Ghiza) but was banished to the shadow realm, I’m actually curious what lore implications the dlc’s gonna bring about cause also in the paintings at Volcano manor were paintings of the Erd Tree on fire 🤔
i think the final boss will be miquella what if miquella helps us as a guide and in return we aid him in curing his curse which is his youth this would probably like transform him or sumn
I don’t think Messmer is the final boss, just the one that’s being advertised the most. Souls games have never been one to make their final DLC boss the center of attention. It’s possible that Miquella will be the final boss of the DLC, but because everything so far seems to suggest Miquella will be an ally, my money is on Godwyn being the final boss after he’s resurrected by Miquella’s Eclipse

The best guess is he’s a probably the third child of Radagon and Marika red hair and he’s clearly talking to Marika in the trailer. My personal opinion: He is the eldest child of the three but he was exiled to the land of shadows by his mother for whatever reason either charged with protecting/ enforcing the golden order’s dominance there, or he was banished similarly to how Godfrey was sent away after he had served his purpose to Marika. Also does anyone think that when Messmer ignites the flame in his hand during the trailer could that possibly be The rune of death. Hot Take: the rune of death was stolen three times in its history. First time was by Messmer and then Marika charged her shadow to guard the rune of death from there forward, then Ranni stole it, then the tarnished. Idk it just looks like the death flame at the start.
Rykard's hands weren't that lanky, at least in his portraits. He might either be one of his children, someone completely new, or, as i've seen a theory, Marika's brother or even a child between Miquella and Mogh (keeping the M name going)
