    Where I used to live, the grocery store had pretty cheap dates (I don't know why, it was the last place you would expect to have them cheaply.) So for breakfast I would alternate between bananas, apples, and dates mixed into my morning oatmeal, depending on the season. Half an apple cut up, a banana sliced with my cereal spoon, or half a date chopped finely. You don't need to use the whole date in one sitting, it adds a LOT of flavor, and the finer you chop it the more "mixed in" to whatever you add it to it will be.
    I also have a stash of date pits from then* with the intention of gathering enough to grind them up for date flour, which you can use to add fiber and some other nutrients to bread. This actually makes them more worthwhile as the pits are fairly heavy too. However, they are EXTREMELY hard so you need a properly powerful machine to grind them up. Or you can pulverize them for your garden/compost - industrially they're added to animal feed!
    * - which have probably gone stale by now because I forgot about them due to not having cheap dates anymore, oops. I should check...

    • @Aubreykun
      @Aubreykun 6 лет назад

      I've since replaced the dates with bulk packs of raisins from amazon, I get like 30lbs of it for about 60$, which is fairly cheap (for raisins) as it ends up being about 2$ a lb. Less time spent shopping, keeps well, and serves as a "reserve" for when the fruit at the store is not in acceptable condition or at a good price as well as being healthy snack or a high-texture alternative to adding sugar into a dish or drink.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  6 лет назад

      Are the raisins sweetened with sugar? It usually is like many dried fruits on the market. If they are sweetened, it's no different than adding white sugar.

    • @Aubreykun
      @Aubreykun 6 лет назад

      Nope, just raisins and (it might depend on the season) sometimes includes a small amount of sunflower oil, I presume to prevent it melting into a goopy mass and act as a preservative. It does come packed in a cardboard box wrapped in oilfree paper and takes some work to transfer into a proper storage container though. They also seem to be organic which I didn't realize. Here's the listing: www.amazon.com/Good-Sense-Seedless-Raisins-Pound/dp/B00FGQV75U/
      As a note, I get it with the subscribe and save price, but I skip the order constantly until I actually start to run low. I have only bought 1 box a year, which amounts to only about 5 and a half dollars a month.
      Buying in bulk is obviously a really great way to save on food, but you have to make certain compromises for storage or what you want as far as products go. Some things, like these raisins are a fantastic option, others not really so much depending on your specific requirements.

    This video is over a year old, but I'm just seeing it -
    FYI - cranberries are wonderful when you toss them in the food processor with some orange, almonds, and a little sweetener.
    The medjool dates can be used as a sweetener in various things. They're also good to slice open, pull the pit out, and then stuff with almond butter. One other little tip about the almond butter that I once saw here on YT - throw together a mix of sunflower seed, hemp seeds, and chia seeds (really, any variety you have on hand), and thow that mix into a container of almond butter. This will up the amount of seeds you get, bulking it up a bit. Now, stuff that into the medjool dates. Yummy!

    The chard, including chopped stems, will be good sauteed with garlic and the mushrooms. The kale can be left to break down on a salad with a vinagrette or lemon juice to soften and make tastier. U can blanch it first, then saute with seasonings then less bitter. Cranberries need sugar and a little lemon juice cooked for a good relish. People often add orange zest. Dates are great alone, in cereal, as sweetener in smoothies. Some bake with them for sweetness. Glad u are exploring and enjoying! Cheers!

      Yup, preparing ALL of your meals is time consuming.
      BUT if you keep track of the time it takes to eat really healthy outside your home, it probably takes just as much time to decide where, drive there, get the order in, wait, eat, pay the bill & tip and drive home...
      The two advantages being that you don't have to do shopping or wash dishes after.
      The main disadvantage is the COST.
      We try to grow 50 to 70% of our own produce (depending on seasons), so there is quite a bit of gardening labor to add in. I just count it as another hour of exercise each day. However, we know EXACTLY what goes into our meals!
      Bananas, coconuts, mushrooms and such we have to buy...

      I rarely chop anything. They don't need to be chopped in order to cook. I just cooked a pot of whole potatoes and whole sweet potatoes mixed together. If I don't want to eat the skins, I will take it off before eating, and it's much easier. Cooking whole vegetables also saves a ton of vitamins and minerals that usually get lost in the water. Cut it on the plate or before serving after it is cooked. You will notice an improvement in taste and ease of preparation. Cabbage can be cut in huge chunks, and carrots don't need to be peeled at all, just washed and cooked whole. Wash produce, though.

    • @madeline5175
      @madeline5175 6 лет назад

      @@BeatTheBush Great question! I should start at the beginning of the almond milk process. Step 1: Soak almonds for eight hrs. Step 2: rinse almonds, then put in high-speed blender w/ five cups of filtered water. Add in a pinch of salt (if you please), and two dates (be sure to remove the seeds). If you'd like flavored milk, such as vanilla, then add in 1/4 tsp of vanilla extract (or better yet, one vanilla bean). Step 3: Blend it all up! Blend for 1-2min. Step 4: Pour and strain the contents into a nut milk bag, over a large bowl. (affordable on Amazon). Step 5: Put contents into a pitcher/mason jar/something that can hold liquid and which has a lid. Stays fresh in the fridge for 5-7 days. So to directly answer your question, the date must be blended into the almond milk.

I also found sweet potatoes dropped from .69 to .39 a lb. unadvertised specials. Big bags of onions for $1.59, bags of oranges, apples, etc. can also be found at rock bottom prices. I got chicken on sale for something like .49 a lb, and it was a huge package of leg quarters for just over $4.00. I love food, and it is almost easy to save a ton of money just by looking for the GREAT sales. I saw stuff you bought that I thought was horribly expensive, like the pomegranates, the dates, and something else, but you got great deals on the apples, the chard, and a couple of other things. The sweet potatoes were overpriced, probably because they were purple. But overall, that was an excellent cost for all that food. People say that you cannot eat cheaply if you buy fresh food, and your video shows differently. That is a ton of food!! I buy cabbage all the time when it is on sale, or even if it is not, because it is cheap, and it will provide ten meals as a side dish for me. Interesting story about Whole Foods.... we raise most of the stuff you just paid for. For example we have 7 pomegranate bushes. (almost trees, at 12 feet?)
    Ours have NEVER been fertilized or sprayed, for the simple reason that they do not require either one here in north central CA... just water. They have no insect enemies and the soil here needs no amendments.
    So.... Whole Foods sells theirs at twice what they cost at the average store because they have a little organic sticker on them.
    I happened to be in the Sacramento store one day and the manager was in the produce section. I asked him point blank why they charge twice as much for the little organic sticker on them, when the fruit does not require insecticides or chemical supplementation.
    His response... because we can.
    His answer is one of many, many reasons why I doubt and question the entire organic labeling cult.
    95% or more of consumers have NO idea how food is grown, what it requires to get it to market and what is safe or not safe to be consuming.
    In Salinas, CA for example, the huge commercial enterprises are cashing in on the organic label cult.
    Growing supposedly organic vegetables in fields right next to what used to be standard vegetables. I have stood there and watched crop dusters spray one field and the over-spray drifts right over the supposedly organic field.
    However, if and when they are lab tested, the sample will be taken from the center or unexposed side of the field. You would also be surprised to know how seldom an area actually gets retested after a field has passed the first mandatory test.
    And then you can/should research what pesticides ARE allowed for organic produce, usually organic based sprays. You will find that there are NO studies of the long term side effects of the permitted organic sprays... and you can probably bet that some of them are just as harmful as the commercial insecticides. Just no research been done yet...
    Unless YOU grow it yourself, or really know your farmers market vendor well enough to hang around his/her fields, you cannot be sure what is really in your food.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  6 лет назад +1

      Just don't buy organic for the types of fruits that require little pesticides. I know you do need it for spinach and leafy veggies. Less so for fruits where you peel off and discard. They can spray it and it wont matter.

      @@jlina I agree, it is going to be better than McDonald's, of course!

      www.livealittlelonger.com/fruits-and-vegetables-that-contain-the-most-pesticides/
      Yes, you can and should mitigate the problems as much as you can with apples for example, on which most of the residues are in the skin. Either peel them or scrub the hell out of them! Scrubbing strawberries is not much of an option though.
      True organic produce is sometimes not as pretty as the non organic choices... and you may find a little bit of extra protein here and there, as we do. Most of the critters are quite visible and easily removed at the first washing outdoors...
      Still far cleaner than most packaged and processed foods (especially canned) that are allowed by law to contain minimum amounts of bug parts, rodent hairs and such.
      I never eat processed tomato products. I spent one summer, back when I was a puppy, driving tomato trucks to the canneries in Tracy, CA...
      When we would dump the bins you would see all kinds of interesting things being washed down the chutes and straight into the pulper to be processed into ketchup.
      By the time I saw the third small snake on its way to becoming part of tomato sauce, I had learned to make my own. Which I still do to this day.

      Why do you keep saying "we" do you have equity in that whole foods store?

    • @brianmarshall3931
      @brianmarshall3931 6 лет назад

      @@evanhdez I count the use of the word WE 3 times in my first comment?
      The first and second WE refers to me and my partner. Reread the context in which I used it...
      The third use of WE was in the reply from the manager of WF store as to their pricing practices.
      The two of us might go to a Whole Foods store twice a year, and I believe it belongs to Amazon now?
      Sorry, I have no stock in Amazon either. Some days I wish I did...

    Before this video, I thought I was "intelligent" in buying products. Now I have realized I spend a lot of money in expensive things which don't add value to my diet.

    Hi BTB, do you ever compost your waste (including cooking water) and grow your own ever?

    Good to see you have plenty of greens. They are so essential for the human body. I like to buy frozen spinach, mustard greens and broccoli.
    I would like to try cooked kale one day.

    you may want to try the kale in a salad. Cover with oil+acid and massage the kale. Let sit for a few minutes and the citrus will start digesting it for you!

    + my problem with vegetables and stuff like this the shelf life is really short. i know thats a good thing in terms of its better for your body, but still makes grocery shopping a more frequent thing in your life
