  • Today on The Freytag Builders Show I am going to do an in depth setup and test of the Graco 390 PC airless paint sprayer. This is brand new and the first time I have ever seen or used this model. My old sprayer was a Home Depot version. It was a Graco Magnum $299 homeowner model.

      Matt Freytag I actually picked it up yesterday. The benefits are a slightly more powerful motor and the ability to provide constant pressure. My bud uses 390's and he says he doesnt notice any pulsing in pressure. They said its only noticeable with very short hoses.

      Jr Is200t I definitely don’t have the experience you have. I just build houses and paint them occasionally. I wanted the 395 model but don’t think it was necessary for me to spend the extra money for what I was using it for. I spray and backroll the primer and I also spray all the trim and doors in the house. I just recently bought the pressure roller and it makes super quick work out of rolling the color on the walls.

    • @MattFreytag
      @MattFreytag  2 года назад +1

      You shouldn’t normally have to thin the paint to spray in the sprayer unless you are using a really fine tip or if it’s one of the less powerful models and it’s not spraying a good pattern. If you were to thin it I would start out with small amounts and mix well.

    • @khimguillermo1168

      @@MattFreytag - I think the new one is worth owning. Simply being a homeowner though for occasional (rare) use (and being housepoor :), I can't afford it or justify the expense (even though it was in my top 3 finalists after lots of research). The new model pump is better. And you can by aftermarket versions of it for pretty cheap (less than a $100 on Amazon, and eBay). One (or more) of these may actually be the OEM pump since I believe some of the components are made overseas (China). Like everything else, if it's assembled in America (some DeWalt tools for instance), they can say "Made In America". Which is one reason I voted for Trump (not that he alone can make a huge difference).

    • @MattFreytag
      @MattFreytag  4 года назад

      Steve Beaulieu. Actually the process I did at the beginning of running the water and paint through the gun should have been done with the tip removed. The material would have went thru faster and you would avoid and unnecessary wear on the tip. They do wear out from the paint acting like an abrasive and blowing out the inside of the tip making it spray differently than intended.
      As for turning the tip around! The reasoning for this is to blow out any trash or debris to unclog the tip then spin it back around to continue painting.
      Hopefully this answered your question. Thanks for the comment and for watching the vide.

    Do you really need to back roll primer? The new dry walls suck it up really well, right? You guarentee roller lines now. When you put your finish coat on, you roll it for texture. In my opinion, no need to backroll primer.

    • @MattFreytag
      @MattFreytag  5 лет назад +2

      aaron anderson First off thanks for your comment and watching my video.
      I really can’t answer the technical question of ‘Do you really need to back roll primer’. This is just the way I have been doing it for years.
      I do know this. In my experience it helps even out the primer or paint that you are spraying on the wall to get better coverage since sometimes the spray pattern is not perfectly consistent depending on the spray rig, paint thickness, or your actual technique. Also it is just one more coat of rolling texture to make the dry wall and mud joints more consistent when the light is shining on them.

    I don’t understand why painters back roll , it defeats the purpose of spraying which is to be faster than rolling. As a painter that does both spray and traditional brush and roll work , if you’re planning on back rolling then opt out of using the sprayer as it will cut into your time having to prepare for use and clean the sprayer afterwards. Might as well just cut and roll . Even faster when you use the bigger rolls like 14 to 18 inch , especially if you’re just running primer on brand new drywall/sheetrock.

    • @MattFreytag
      @MattFreytag  3 года назад +8

      Alex Sandoval I cant speak for other painters but there are a few reasons I back roll. One reason is to even out the paint on the wall. Second it creates roller texture/stipple. This helps when touching up at the end of a build. Also I can spray and back roll a house way quicker than I can cut in and roll the walls no matter what size roller I am using.
      Personally I would classify backfilling as an extra step that would create a better overall finish.
      Those are my opinions. Thanks for the comment and for watching the video.

    • @alexsandoval7202
      @alexsandoval7202 3 года назад +3

      Matt Freytag perfectly understandable, some clients would want roller texture for sure and I suppose it does help with the touch ups in the latter parts of the job . I guess at the end of the day whatever gets the job done quicker is the way to go, in my experience it ends up being counterproductive hence why the comment in the first place . I’ve definitely seen my share of mishaps working/helping other contractors doing spray work . Thanks for the reply and good content regardless, and congratulations on the upgrade with the sprayer 👍
