    Billy, you may have some wonderful surprises come Spring and Summer next year after the clearing of the garden. It's possible, although obviously not guaranteed, that now the light is able to reach the ground, bulbs and many plants that have may have laid dormant for decades will resprout. Fingers crossed for nice surprises.

    Hello Billy, hearing about the gentleman that came to the convent. It brought back my memories of Catholic Grade School here in the USA. If you were baptized Catholic, as a baby, when most of us grew up, we then attended Catholic Grade School. We were taught Catechism. AS a 2nd grader you received your 1st Confession, and later your 1st Communion. Later in 3rd grade you were Confirmed (Confirmation). You were then considered a official member of the Catholic Church. So Billy, if you were baptized and did not attend Catholic School, you were supposed to attend Catechism class during the week. So you learn about your religion that way. This is what that gentleman was referring to! You then went on to receive the sacraments of Communion, Confession and Confirmation. Some times people as adults, wanted to join the Catholic Church, and were also required to attend a Catechism class, which could have been private lessons. These maybe were held at that apartment in your convent, maybe taught by a nun and or a priest. Now thy have lay people that teach these classes as well.

    • @deebee533
      @deebee533 Год назад +8

      @@jmrocks49 it depended on the bishop. Living in a rural area, our bishop here in PA came around every 3 years. So it depended on what the nuns thought if you were ready, I guess. I went to catholic grade school and was older than some in my 3rd grade class. I started later due to not enough room in the 2 grades in 1 classroom. Others in my school were in the 4, 5, and possibly 6th grade when received Confirmation.
      I really believed the Holy Spirit came on me at that time. My teacher looked at me strange when I told her I had a new language I could speak. No one I knew had another language like that, unless they never talked about it. I eventually stopped using die to embarrassment.

    • @Ragnar8504
      @Ragnar8504 Год назад

      By 70s standards these papers are actually fairly conservative. How about a grey background with a 20 cm wide column of fark blue eyes staring at you? With midnight blue carpet? Found that when removing some massive wardrobes at a friend's new place. Or orange with yellow flowers and red/orange speckled carped (same place, different room)? Yellow, orange and sometimes purple mixed in for good measure were popular colours back then. I'm too young to have witnessed the 70s myself but old enough that my baby photos mostly have 70s decor in the background. Another friend grew up in a place where the hallway dark chocolate brown lino, sackcloth up the walls to about eye level, chocolate brown paint above and on the ceiling, an "island" covered with sackcloth and surrounded by track lights suspended from the ceiling and bright orange doors and windows. Mind you, the place looked like that in the mid-2000s and knowing the parents probably still does.

Don’t know if that’s a true story, but it sounds cool. As a youngster I always heard them called Stilson wrenches. That’s because the Stilson tool company was the biggest maker of them at one time. Much like an adjustable spanner wrench is called a Crescent wrench.

    Billy, have you thought of seeing if the town would post a letter to all the people, asking if they have any photos of the Chateau, either outside or inside, and maybe some with the Nuns. You could frame those and make a history wall somewhere for the convent. And maybe even learn more about the convents history.

    I love how you took charge Billy. Let this be a lesson. To remove the sink trap you must turn the cap anticlockwise. If the cap is stiff tap the stillson pipe wrench with a mallet or lump of wood to break the seal, not the pipe. It will also save you a small fortune in repairs 🛠

      You might want to be careful with that old wallpaper some old wallpapers contained large dangerous amount of arsenic and/or mercury in the dyes and paints. Not trying to be an alarmest just want people to be safe.

    • @flibbertygibbette
      @flibbertygibbette Год назад

      @@hannakinn Arsenic wasn’t introduced to wallpaper until the mid-19th century, and these wallpaper scraps are probably older than that. Also arsenic was used to produce certain bright greens, blues, and yellows. I wonder how often cinnabar (mercury sulfide) was used for reds, and what era it was used? But the mercury in cinnabar is pretty stable, so I’m not sure it would have been as toxic as a pigment, as long as it wasn’t heated.

It would be a great idea to recreate one of the wallpapers as they are a nice piece of history as well. Wouldn't you guys be gobsmacked it you do find something in a drain. Not sure what a Nun would drop in there of any value though. LOL 😂 Have a great weekend.

    I love watching the restoration of the convent. The one thing I keep thinking and wondering about is that huge empty space at the front of the chapel. It is crying out for a beautiful large crucifix to be hung there. All Catholic Churches have a crucifix hung behind the main altar and I’m quite sure one hung there in the days when the convent was an active community of nuns. Since it doesn’t appear that you are trying to eliminate the religious purpose of the chapel, leaving in place the sacred symbols in the stained glass, etc., I’m wondering it the restoration could be completed with a crucifix. I would bet that when the convent was taken out of use the crucifix was sold or donated (Blessed objects aren’t really supposed to be sold) With the number of churches being closed or replaced in many places it might not be too difficult to find a beautiful crucifix for the chapel. I would also bet that many of us who watch the restoration would be quite willing to chip in to buy either a used crucifix or pay to have a new one made in the style of those used in chapels of this age. If you are willing, and if someone is interested in starting a special go fund me for a crucifix, I’d love to donate to be part of the purchase. (Or donation if a used one is found that shouldn’t actually be “sold.”) wouldn’t the placing of the crucifix be the final finishing touch on this incredibly beautiful restored chapel?

      When a church or chapel is de-consecrated (literally 'made un-holy'), most of the fittings are supposed to be removed. I know Billy found the one statue and tucked it into the Gospel side niche (stage right) for safekeeping; originally they were both empty.

    Hi Billy. Cathecism is quite common in other religions as well as the Catholic one. As Lutherans, we studied religion as well and were Confirmed when we reached 14 years of age. That was a Danish tradition. Nice to see Michael again. It would be amazing if he was willing to reproduce some of those historic wallpapers in the hidden room/closet.
