Just finished dinner here in the UK. Said to hubby “Right I’m just going to see how Billy and Rick have got in today”. Who’s Billy and Rick? “Oh just some guys renovating an old convent in France”. Ok love 😂. Funny to think people all over the world all checking in, all with a common interest and admiration for you guys 🤗💪. There’s a hole in my bucket 😂😂
Childhood song here in America, There's a hole in my bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza...wonder if anyone out there remembers that one? That popped I to my head when you said there's a hole!
@@bjbrown In Germany they have the same song that goes "Ein Loch ist im Eimer, Karl Otto, Karl Otto, ein Loch ist im Eimer, Karl Otto, ein Loch!". And in Italian it is "C'è un buco nel secchio, Arturo, Arturo, C'è un buco nel secchio, Arturo, Artù" :-D Any other languages around?
The opening shot of today's video amply demonstrates why the local community is so appreciative of the work you are doing to bring the Convent back into use. For decades they've had to go past what had effectively become an eyesore and a bit of a dump. Even if it were to never be occupied again but merely maintained at the level it is now, the Convent has become a visual asset to the local community and dare I say it, more than a little bit romantic. Who doesn't love the romance of an old stone building? Speaking of romance, when the time comes to turn your attention to garden restoration, (smelly) climbing roses in the courtyard would be just the ticket. The courtyard is such a sun trap & as the stone walls would effectively act as giant night storage radiators, on a summer's evening, they would accentuate the fragrance of any highly scented climbing roses you may plant. There's quite a few French climbing roses that are highly scented, both single & double flowered varieties. The colour against the stonework would be absolutely amazing & you may like to also consider some clematis to extend the flowering season. Clematis flowering season ranges from late winter to late autumn depending on variety & grouping (1, 2, or 3). Some clematis will flower once in Spring & again in Autumn. I don't know if it's the same in France as in the UK, but we have widespread access to cheap garden plants in packets or boxes from discount stores & supermarkets. If a person is new to gardening or not sure what they want, it's an excellent way to get started without blowing the budget. I'm a fairly knowledgeable amateur gardener but even (I) regularly make good use of discount store plants & have had ~98% success rate over the last 20yrs. Have a go & have fun. General rule of thumb: unless absolutely necessary, DON'T buy the biggest plant in the nursery. Plants will establish far better if they can be given time to adapt to the soil they're going to spend the rest of their lives in. So if it's got a good root system, don't worry to much about the top growth.
If you happen to empty another, maybe connect a garden hose to the hole in the bucket, and have the hose trail to the outside? I used to empty the hot water heaters in an apartment building to get the scale out for maintenance, and we did that, also used that set up for blocked sinks, etc. Course, your method was much more fun to watch!
About to sit down with family and friends for a home cooked Thanksgiving Meal. I’m thankful for wonderful folks like the Pethericks, Ryan, Steve, Rick and the entire extended Petherick clan. Won’t be long and you’ll have 500k then a million subscribers following along on these renovations, restorations and reimaginations. 🦃 🍁
Agreed. As a fellow American, you understand the fascination with renovating a very old building as we are a younger country and think that built in the Victorian era is real old, lol.
Rick and his smile like sunshine, I love the way when he throws the bits of timber in the back of the truck, he pats it as if he just put a small child down to sleep. Cracks me up. “A labour of love...” 😅
Someone, aka Ryan is doing a great job filming and editing Billy’s vlogs👏👏👏. Billy you make it all look like child’s play and together with Rick it is just plain fun. Thanks guys🙏🏻❤️
Really enjoy watching Rick paint. He looks like he is totally in the zone, and he does it so carefully, so well. With my ADHD I always manage to get paint everywhere;' and when I'm done I always forget the cleaning up part for about a week or two. Sigh. But I love watching Rick. I could watch him paint for hours on end.
Always an adventure at the convent. 🙄 When you cut the first pipe & it just dribbled, I thought 'Oh NO! he has a vacuum!' & sure enough cutting the second pipe released the torrent. You guys are the greatest. You've had way too many oops to let it rattle you now. GREAT JOB!!
I just get so excited to see you guys work. I work the same way. Washing and cleaning as I go. I never have to “clean the kitchen” etc. I do it as I cook. Washing all the surfaces and dishes as I go along. I would be in Heaven working for you all. 🥰❤️
Mix one-third cup fabric softener with two-thirds add a cup of white household vinegar to a bucket of hot water. Thoroughly score the wallpaper. Wet the wallpaper thoroughly, and let stand until it can be peeled away. The fabric softener will soften the paper and the vinegar should help to dissolve the paste. It did work for us but we had to make sure the wall was really wet so put a tarp or something down on the floor. Hope this helps you.
I love watching things from outside the US, because our holidays don't match up. Then we they have a Bank Holiday or whatever, it doesn't change my viewing pleasure! :)
Billy, I absolutely lost it when you were cracking up holding the bucket‘s. You had quite the adventure that day. I really enjoyed watching it. It’s so wonderful to have such a crew that you all get along and have respect for each other and are all friends. I wish the world could get along so well. Sending love from California. 💜🤟🏻😎🇺🇸
Hi I Love to see how you are changing the spaces. I have a building company in Sweden and I also love to change spaces and alter the rooms so it´s a pleasure to see the rapid work and the results before and after filmed, thank you ! I'm watching Billy and friends do such amazing work, that although I live in a small apartment, they have inspired me to do some needed upgrades, some of which I have never done before. Thank you, fellas, love your channel ! 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗 squishy!
Have to say it was a refreshing change to see Gwen’s lovely smiling face on this video. One could almost believe she is English and not French. You will all have to learn to speak French. Now theres a challenge. 😊She has a good sense of humour too and her smile a delight.
Love you guys and we watch all your movies. Wallpaper tip - when steamers don't work (they really never do unless there are multiple coats of paper). Instead you can prime the wallpaper, sand rough edges, patch and paint. Painted wallpaper always looks better than gouged up drywall, especially one coat of really tight paper that you have there. If any of it blisters just wait and they will disappear. If not scrape and patch.
What an adventure! It reminds me of the one I had a week after moving into our new house - a post-war home - and discovered that the concrete foundation was made of concrete and filler (whatever could be found in the area: small stones, bits of broken crockery, old plates, screws and nails, branches and pieces of wood). After 3 days of continuous full on - sheets of rain, I could hear a trickle of water but couldn't see where it was! Then it seemed within an hour, I had a soaked carpet! Like when walking on it, it spewed a ripple of water! Finding the entry point took only a few minutes once I removed the paneling. What I found was a 1 inch wide pipe that had been plugged with small stones - which were at the bottom of the wall, against the wooden stud - 'twas the old oil furnace fuel entry pipe - no insulation, no vapor barrier either. And water gushing out of the pipe. The paneling's back was soaked and a total loss. It took myself and my then 12 year old son over 10 hours of hard work and a wet-vac to soak up the wetness. We couldn't plug the pipe until the rain stopped! Every time we tried to plug it with hydraulic cement, the rain would push the plug out and we'd have water gushing in again. My son suggested we fit in a tap and turn it off but it being the middle of the night and no store opened in the area and the fact that I wasn't a plumber, that wasn't an option. We eventually discovered that the concrete patio at the back of the house was the culprit as it was pressing against the pipe and water, that great carver of nature, had made its way into the pipe by disintegrating its wooden plug. Once the pipe cut at the foundation, the hole properly plugged with cement and the outside foundation waterproofed with membrane, the issue has never arisen again. But I can say that you guys had it easy.....only 250 gallons. Once the rain stopped, an insurance estimator said that we sucked and emptied about 500 gallons in 6 hours as my son counted the amount of times he emptied the 5 gallon buckets outside. Doing the math that was 675 gallons in 8 hours. At least you only got a small shower!
Got a hole in my bucket Dear Liza. Then fix it he did! Love how everytime you both put something in the truck you both gave the item a tap, as if to say bye, take it easy. There may be a solution you can wet the old wallpaper with to get it off but I have no idea what it would be. Good luck.
Billy I have a suggestion about the walled garden. As you are going to have tenets in the convent, Why not set aside a portion of the walled garden for an allotment type space for the tenets to grow their own produce.
That was the best physical comedy that I've seen in a long time. You could not have staged it. Glad you left all of it in the vlog. Sometimes things just go off course and one has to laugh. I couldn't believe the bucket. 🤣😂 On the other hand, I hope Sadie's apartment doesn't have the same wood worm issue with all the work she and Mo have put into it.
Rick not only has the best smile, he has a good brain too :) Where was Rick or the tape, at least, when that little boy stuck his finger in the dam in Holland -- lol. I think you'll be reboarding/plaster-boarding that wall -- too crazy taking days to get the wall paper off -- well done, all of you :)
Good job! We spent the day here in the US cooking and baking for our big harvest feast. Thankful for lots this year including getting to watch your RUclips channel. 😊
Oh good heavens! THAT made me laugh out loud! I love that you shared this crazy adventure with the world. You guys are so much fun to watch. And you are all so handsome!
Rick is a beast! If he can't get that wallpaper off no one can! I think the total redo of the sheet rock is in order. Great job all of you! Have a great weekend! We're celebrating Thanksgiving here in the U.S. today so I'm adding this channel in to all the things I'm grateful for! 😘💚🦃
I have to say, Rick is so handy, he just jumps in and does whatever is needed, what a great video, I laughed out load when you showed us the hole in the bucket, thanks for bringing us along on the video, awesome!
As at least one other viewer has noted, today is Thanksgiving here in the USA, and even though it's a Thursday, it feels like a weekend. I was momentarily surprised there was a video today, but then I remembered it's only Thursday! Thankful for all of you and to be able to watch this video this evening.
That was exciting to watch the water gushing from the water tank! "There's a hole in my bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza. There's a hole in my bucket, dear Liza, a hole!
Nice video work Ryan! You managed to film some hilarious craziness as Billy and Rick work on the new apartment. The ‘hole in the bucket’ had me crying tears of laughter!😂 also, I must say that both you and Rick have the same ‘clean as you go’ work ethic which I admire. It is safer and debris does not need to be handled multiple times if you put it in the dumpster initially.👍🏻👍🏻
Tell Rick a skim coat of plaster will cover the wallpaper and smooth the wall. In our Chateau there were too many layers of wallpaper to contend with and the skim coat went fast giving me a great surface to paint. Cheers!
Load shedding here in South Africa. Tune in every day. Such an enjoyable switch off from the challenges here. Love the content and comraderie. Crack On you gorgeous guys.
Love your acting Billy, your a natural 😉😂, but don’t give up your day job! Great work guys and Rick is the man. What a great worker he is and I have loved his cheery smile ever since he was working at Phil and Angelina’s.
Can't get over the *length-height* of the doorframe Billy, manoevering the wood outside was interesting too😋. The tenacity of those wood blocks behind the framework, which in spite of brute force being wielded, refused to let go easily, earned my *total respect* 🤭As for the flood😂 no words, my apologies~
Great job guys. I’m surprised to see you get rid of that glass and some of that wood that might be able to fix others areas in the convent. Love your vids. Keep up the awesomeness
Is that you, Ryan editing these videos? Amazing work. A real talent. I agree-remove the wall board ("drywall" or "greenboard" if it is used in wet areas, as we say in the US) or else you will spend a solid month stripping wall paper and producing areas that just need to be cut out because the wall paper destroyed the wall board. Count your losses and move on with new walls. It is looking beautiful guys. Breathing a new life into the convent.
RE: Wallpapered walls...just cover with the thinnest wallboard you can get in France (I think he used 1/4" thick board)...We had to do that in a bathroom ceiling that had a weird ultra-adhesive on walls and the 30 yr old "popcorn" ceiling soundproofing treatment . Guy was done with both sets of surfaces in about 2 days ,vs. "Weeks"...Saved us a ton of money on his labor! Good luck! Oklahoma, USA
(Moira Ashton) That was so funny!! LOved the bucket,,, (been humming "There's a hole in my bucket dear Liza dear Lisa " except its " Dear Billy,,,," 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Wallpaper removal - I have “scratched/scored” the wallpaper and sprayed on a solution called DIF. It breaks down the glue. Then removal is a cinch. Observation - safety glasses like the style Shawn wears might be a good idea….good progress!!
I’m singing the song, there’s a hole in my bucket! You are all so much fun to watch. I was out of town for celebrating Thanksgiving so I’m catching up on all the videos I missed. Very happy to see all your smiling faces again. Ryan, great job filming and editing. xx
I'm on Prince Edward Island in Canada 🦞🍁🦫 I started watching your channel about a month ago, and now I'm absolutely obsessed with knowing what you guys are up to :) I LOVE that you're saving those beautiful old buildings
Just got back from a wonderful Thanksgiving meal with family and had t find out what you were doing today at the convent! I’m glad everything went well and glad you’re moving forward quickly on the apartment. I can’t wait to see the finished work!!
There is a product called Gorilla Tape. It is like extra strength duct tape. If you heavily score the walls, heavily, steam, let dry and then apply the Gorilla tape and press it down real good, it will bond. After a day, when you rip it off, it will pull the paper. This is for the toughest jobs, but i have done entire houses this way.
Billy, I had the same problem with old wallpaper in my house, and it is only from 1984. However, the builder neglected to prime before installing the wallpaper. It would not come off without damaging the Sheetrock. We had to replace the Sheetrock or cover it with wood paneling. We tried everything including chemical paper removers, nothing worked. Hard work. You guys will do great. I have no doubt!
Ask Sadie and Mo what they used to remove the wall paper it was easy and took it all off! Well the floor got washed! 😂 😂😂😂. You all are fantastic! Cheer Rick, Billy, Ryan!
Some of that wood looks nice enough to use in future projects? Like maybe the panel with the glass panels in it? Are you planning on storing some of it? Awesome job Billy and Rick! BRAVO 👏😁
@@ThePethericks ohhh ok. Nothing special then. I know nothing about wood...wether it's good quality or not so much. Lol no point in making room for something that will just be in the way. You had me laughing at the bucket brigade in the old kitchen! Of course there was a hole in one of them! 🤭🤣 Rick to the rescue on that one! I really enjoy the humor and you're always smiling! It's great fun to watch!
Rick is adorable with his positive personality, he always brightens my day when he's in a video. its like he hardly ever has a bad day and finds good things to be happy about on a daily basis. same for Ryan, Ryan brightens up the room with his cheeky sense of humour. if happiness were a person, Ryan would be it. you got a good bunch of lads working with you billy. great video as always.
I love that wallpaper, lol - if it's old, I love it-the restoration of a beautiful thing. Remodeling is different, and, more times than not, the building won't cooperate on many tasks unless it's being brought back to its original state. Funny these historic grand art forms. It seems to me it's as if they are alive in their way. The walls hold all the memories. It is so important as you are so blessed that this building picked you for the job.
I almost spilled my beer when you said there was a hole in the bucket when all that water was coming out ! LOL With the valve stuck like that, I guess that was the only thing to do. You should install a tankless water heating system. Thanks for sharing your excitement for the day. Time to hit the pub. 🍺
I suppose everyone working at the Convent was singing 'there's a hole in my bucket' and having a great laugh. It would be easier to remove the old boards and replace rather than spend time trying to remove the old wallpaper, at least you get a chance to see the condition behind them and insulate plus less costly in the end. It's a laugh a minute with you Rick and Ryan filming, great team. Well done all 💕🇦🇺

That was quite the relay race! Good save guys!!! What a team!!!!
Great job
It was like the Chuckle Brothers, too me, too you with the bucket!! Great video! Always have good fun!
Ryan you are doing a fantastic job editing the videos!! Billy and Rick you guys are amazing!
Love your videos, Best on You Tube.
That was exciting to watch the water gushing from the water tank!
"There's a hole in my bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza. There's a hole in my bucket, dear Liza, a hole!
So funny when you found a hole in your bucket 😂 Rick is such a hard worker x
Cheers!
Thanks. That was some light relief from the football. Brilliant. X
Happy Thanksgiving Billy to you , your family and crew!! Many blessings from you friend across the pond in Vermont, USA ❤
You guys are too funny! I love to watch you work together. Tell Ryan to show his face every now and then!
How have I not seen Rick's tattoos? 😍 I just found this channel and I am hooked! Hello from Fort Worth, TX.
Load shedding here in South Africa. Tune in every day. Such an enjoyable switch off from the challenges here. Love the content and comraderie. Crack
On you gorgeous guys.
Thanks for the b roll intro. Gigantic door, eh? Well done, gang!
My boy Rick is an OX. I respect the both of you! This is some great content!
This was a great video. Thanks for sharing
Oklahoma USA here and I love catching up on what the boys are doing. ❤😃
Best wishes to you guys from Tucson Arizona USA, Crack on, your doing a beautiful job fixing up the place
A hole in the bucket and you’re still smiling Billy 😄good job Rick had a brainwave about a quick repair!
BRAVO 👏😁
it’s old pine from the 60s nothing original but if there’s anything good maybe 🤔
I love watching you guys work, it reminds me of my brothers and I renovating buildings in my younger days.
I am sitting here singing there's a hole in my bucket, dear Lisa, dear Lisa...😄😄
OMG!! Too funny! You know Billy, you really should have had a hose attached to empty the tank out the window, right!? LOL!!!! YOu guys are too funny!
Have a great, relaxing weekend guys, awesome videos this week, and THANK YOU, Rick!!! LOL🇺🇲
LOL
With the valve stuck like that, I guess that was the only thing to do.
You should install a tankless water heating system.
Thanks for sharing your excitement for the day. Time to hit the pub. 🍺
Your acting was great Billy 😄😄👏🏻👏🏻. Lots going on today xxx💕💕
Thank goodness for Rick!
Good job done!
Bad job, Billy...flooded the kitchen?! You're fired !! 😳 😁
Well done all 💕🇦🇺
Lovely to see Rick petting the old wood or the van (most times) when he has thrown something in it :-)
What a beautifull job on the convent from cleveland, ohio in the u.s.a.
As I'm sure you are aware, today is Thanksgiving Day in America. I want you to know that I am thankful for you, your friends, and family for doing such a fantastic job on the chateau and convent. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us. Sending lots of love, always.
