  • Did you know that the brain can't do two things at one time? It can do things in rapid succession but it can't do two things at once. We don't multi-task. We task switch.
That's GREAT news when it comes to dealing with nerves! If we give ourselves a task to do, our brain can't focus on being nervous. It's too busy completing the task.
In our Wail with Shannah Rae musical storytelling classes, we use intention work/actions/tactics to give our brains a tasks to complete.
    Here's a quick exercise:
Picture a friend standing in front of you. Now choose a simple phrase to say to them like "Let's go" or "Good job". Once you've chose your phrase, use it to accomplish the following tasks:
    Scold Them
    Butter Them Up (Flatter Them)
    Dazzle Them
    Put Them In Their Place
    Tease Them
    Flirt With Them
    Squash Them Like a Bug
    Soothe Them
    Wake Them Up To Reality
Now when you were doing that exercise, where was your focus? On the other. Your brain had a task to do and that's what you were focused on.
You can use this in your singing. One of the most fun games you can play is taking a song you like to sing and play with different intentions....even if they don't make sense with the lyrics. (Sometimes that yields some even juicer results).
