A note on the 141mm rear axle spacing, its just a normal 148mm boost wheel with 9mm QR endcaps. Any boost wheelset where you can change, and get hold of, the endcaps will fit.
i came from bmx and didn’t wanna spend over $1000 , ended up getting the grey one for $700 on sale and i love it so far , it can do everything you want it to do
Just got rid of my full sus for san quentin 3 and love it!!! Can do pretty well anything I did on old bike. Little more careful on line choice but bike is also incredibly versatile and playful. Highly recommend it!!
I just got this bike today and I’m watching this after the fact! Everything you said was why I got it, price range because I’m just getting started, but the geometry just felt right as soon as I tested it out in the store. First ride will be tomorrow I’m stoked!
I have this bike (in the pink and teal, which is a a sick as it looks in this vid) so stoked to see a decent review of this bike. I couldn’t be happier it’s so much more capable than other bikes in this price range. I added a dropper and maxis dhf front and aggressor rear/new pedals and grips and went tubeless (I just added tape to the existing wheels and it’s holding so far). Great vid
Thanks Gavin! I really wanted the teal color, but they only had this grey. It's insanely capable for the price. I'd love to upgrade this one, but money is a bit tight at the moment, so maybe down the line!
Funnily enough I wanted the grey, but the teal:/pink was all hem they had in stock, but I wanted the bike badly so I took it. Stoked with the colour looks unreal in person
Thank you for the review. If I have to change to tubeless tires, and add dropper post, it sounds like San Quentin 2 with better through axle, bottom bracket and gears is the way to go!
@@CobraKyle haha not at all! She’s a small and I’m a large but I could see myself taking it out as a play bike in the city. Won’t feel as bad scratching it up versus my main bike

Small world! I just moved to Bentonville last week....and I just got an Xtrada 7 in for review haha. I'd say if your riding style is more towards jumping, dropping, and sending it, then the San Quentin 1 would be better. Day to day trail riding I think the Xtrada is going to be better suited. I haven't ridden the Xtrada yet, but certainly looks more efficient than the SQ.
@@CobraKyle Cool. Are you actually in Bentonville? I bet you will love it here. I'll look for your review. We were in Dallas before. Were you in San Antonio?
@@pauldavidson2520 Yeah loving it so far! Did my first ride today on the Back 40. Stoked to be here. Review on the Xtrada may be a few months away cause I'm slow at videos lol. Yeah I was living in San Antonio previously.
Don’t sound down on the gearing your giving the audience wrong answer. I broke my 2018 b-17.2 frame and the warranty replacement was a riftzone 3. Means it was a 30-11/46. I got stronger and out pedaled the gearing and went with a 34t chainring. It’s good and now I’m wanting to bike pack the bike cause I’m on 27.5+ wheels 3” front 2.8” rear. And thinking of going back to the 30t for longer saddle days. I climb my existing steep trails easier with that geometry compared to the poor one prior. That’s a great bike it really is. If your sporty from bmx days those brakes will be fine and can always bump to budget 200’s rotors. It will grow you drastically. Just recommend a dropper. That right there is a pure wheelie and manual machine. If the stack is too low With that slack of a HT angle get a riser bars up to like 60mm. Replacing that fork will be huge weight savings. You have great videos thank you.
It's basically a weaker interface between the wheel and frame. It can introduce play under big impacts. It's a design that was used for many years 80's - 2000's, but a thru axle is a much more secure and stiffer interface for your wheels. Unfortunately you cannot install a axle on the back of this bike. The San Quentin 2 and 3 however do come with an axle front and rear. I personally think those models are worth the extra money.
Even though the price of 2021 San Quentin 1 raised by 100 USD in comparison to last year's model, it's got significant upgrades like Microshift derailleur with a clutch, internal cable routing, chainstay protector and wider tires (the last one may be not an andvantage for someone). Chain guide is no longer here but narrow wide chainring and clutch should keep chain secure.
I totally agree! A very impressive value especially since all the bikes I recommended in a list video last year have increased $300-$400 for the exact same bike.
Canyon Stoic is a good choice. It sucks that all the bikes I really liked last year for under $1,200 are all now near $1,500. That's why I'm stoked this bike is still $1,000
Hello Huge fan here, wanted to ask you some questions please, I'm thinking of getting the Trek Roscoe 6 or Giant Fathom 0 both of these are in my budget but I'm debating which one is better, The thing I like about Roscoe 6 is it already comes with a dropper post. Which one would you recommend and why?
Hi Eric! Which country do you live in? I only ask because Giant has a lot of different spec builds for each country, so want to make sure I'm looking at the right bike. In the U.S. I only see the Fathom 2 and 3 listed. I will say the Fathom 2 here in the U.S. is a far better option than the Roscoe 6 (in my opinion). It's a bit more, but has the dropper, rear thru axle (Roscoe doesn't), and a 34mm stanchion air fork as opposed to Treks 32mm stanchion coil fork.
@@CobraKyle I would get the bikes that you mentioned in you're Videos but in Mexico it's pretty hard getting any, unless you pay shipping which is around 250 dollars extra. That's why I'm going with mainstream brands. Such as Trek, Giant and Specialized. Which bike would you recommend from these brands? Under 1,250 dollars? Thank you so much❤️
Depends what you want to do with the bike. The Blast will probably be better for just pedaling around, but if you want to do jumps and more aggressive riding, I'd go with the San Quentin.
Hey man just wondering, this model doesn't comes with 29er right? but is it possible to change from 27.5 to 29 on this model? Will there be any adjustments ? TIA. Great bike. :) and Great review.
Thanks Chris. Yeah this bike is 27.5" only. I don't think it has the clearance for a 29" wheel. I put one of my spare 29" wheels next to the frame, and pretty certain the tire would rub the seat tube.
Yes you would have to replace bottom bracket. It's a threaded BB, and the size is 73mm bb shell. The length of the square taper one was 122.5. If you upgrade to say Shimano crankset, you'd need a hollowtech style BB with the same dimensions.
Very different bikes. The Marlin is more an XC style bike for pedaling around easy to moderate trails. If you are interested in riding a bit harder, the San Quentin is a way better choice.
I might actually have an Xtrada coming in for review! Stay tuned

0:56 - This is my first time watching your channel and I'm not sure what to make of your right eye blink when saying "I want my reviews on this channeling to be my honest and unbiased opinion" 🤔 Nice video, though. Very informative!
haha welcome to the channel! I can assure you I'm not that good at sneaking in hidden agendas. I think something was just in my eye. I do want my reviews to be honest, and that's why I added in that whole section about how I acquired the bike for review. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Kyle I just ordered a bobcat trail 4 and im worried I made a mistake over this bike because its only a 200$ difference. Im sure the bobcat is a nice bike but im afraid I might break it because I want to do small jumps. Nothing bigger than 4 or 5 feet max. Anything I might come across on a trail. Maybe a drop off on the trail. What do you think? I picked the marin because it looked like it would be comfortable to cruise around on in town which I also want to do. Maybe jump a couple of staircases in town. Any thoughts? i would greatly appreciate your input.
I've seen people hit jumps on much worse bikes! The San Quentin is a bit more designed for jumping/dropping, but the Bobcat Trail will be more enjoyable for pedaling around the trails. Just make sure the bike is put together safely and inspect regularly if you plan on jumping it alot. Maintenance will help prolong its life!
one thing i found odd with this bike is that the forks are weather dependant when it was cold it would go rock solid and when it was warm it when really soft?
@Cobra Kyle Hi Kyle, Great video, channel and contents! Would you recommend this over Vitus Nucleus VR, as my first Hardtail? or any others. I don't want to spend over a thousand.
Really depends what you want to do with it. This bike is way more suitable if you want to jump and ride playfully. Pedaling around easy trails, the Nucleus will most likely be a better option.
@@CobraKyle why yt didn't notified me about this comment:( I went to my local dealer shop yesterday and they basically had two options for me(both Marin) I ended up buying San Quentin 1. But they gave me a small, though I'm 5'8. Frame tube length coming at 15". Do I need to go back and change it to a Medium? Please Advise.
2:10 That bike sounds like it's going to break! Hahaha! And those chain slaps are irritating to the ears! It's the very reason why I'm saving my wads-a-cash to acquire good quality bikes. At times, good quality can be heard. And that bike sounds... yaiks! I don't wanna waste money for such a bike! Lots'a love, coffee-cheers, & Mabuhay, from tropical Philippines!
Hey Cobra Kyle, as you said in the video, im not able to change the rear wheel at all? Meaning if i were to change the rear wheel with a wheelset that has a quick release i am not able to fit it?
Sorry bout that. You can change the rear wheel as long as you buy a quick release with 141mm spacing. I was just saying that 141 wheels are becoming harder to find. They are still out there though, and you can definitely upgrade the rear wheel!
Great review! I'm 14 and weigh 120 pounds. I have been biking on and off again. Iv goten good at bunny hops and wheelies. Is this bike to heavy for me to get it off the ground? Thanks and I just subscribed to your awesome channel!
Thanks for subscribing and checking out the video! This bike is a bit heavy, but with practice it would only make you stronger. Then if you ever decide to jump a lighter bike, it will be that much easier!
@@CobraKyle I was also wondering if this would be the best option for under 1100. Again, I love to jump and trail ride. I watched your other videos but am still having some trouble
@@retr0rider458 The only reason I would avoid this bike as a dedicated jumper is the rear axle. If you damage the rear wheel, it's getting harder and harder to find a replacement for 141 qr. If you're able to stretch the budget a little more, I'd recommend a Canyon Stoic or the San Quentin 2. Both of those bikes have a rear thru axle, and air sprung forks which will have a bit more adjustability so you can tune the fork exactly to how you ride.
@@CobraKyle can you pls suggest a list of hardtails within 2000$ price range with front and rear thru axle ( I became very particular about getting thru axles after watching your videos). I had planned in getting a trek Roscoe, but shocked to see they used Qr even for high price ranges. Im living in India, brands available here are polygon, kona, trek, marin, scott, connondale, merdia, bregamont and silverback.
@@harisankar1317 The new Marin San Quentin 3 is right at $2,000 and would make an awesome bike. Also, not sure if you can get Canyon bikes in India, but the Stoic 4 is another affordable option with thru axles ($1,900 in the US). I have a Polygon Xtrada 7 and it's been a good bike to me but a bit more of an XC bike. It's front thru axle is also "non boost", but not a huge deal. The new Roscoe 7,8, and 9 have a rear thru axle now (the 6 model still doesn't), but you typically don't get as much value from Trek when compared to previous brands mentioned. Hope this helps guide you in the right direction! Most modern bikes are pretty awesome, so pick one that has best value and matches your riding style, and enjoy!
enjoyed the review. I've got a marin nail trail 6. added a dropper , some pro taper flat pedals, tubeless. got the bike it's 4th set of tires. vattarios waiting patiently for their installation . it's Size xxl. 30 lbs of fun.
Looking forward to the review, Kyle!

I only think about San quentin for now, did you know something more?
Hi my friend...,i'm Jim from Greece...i need a new hardtail...which one do you prefer TREK Roscue 6 or MARIN San quentin 1?
Hi, can I put bigger tyres on it?
Is this better then the vitus nucleus vrs
@@CobraKyle I live in Mexico so the price is pretty similar.
Thank you so much❤️
2021 Marin San Quentin 1 *or* 2021 Kona Blast?
Depends what you want to do with the bike. The Blast will probably be better for just pedaling around, but if you want to do jumps and more aggressive riding, I'd go with the San Quentin.
Is it possible to make MARIN SAN QUENTIN a mullet bike. (front 29er & rear 27.5 wheel) Frame Size "SMALL ".
Was about to pull the trigger until I saw that for some idiotic reason, they made this QR frame. I'll just wait for the Vitus Sentier instead
Good video!
Thanks!
Hey man just wondering, this model doesn't comes with 29er right? but is it possible to change from 27.5 to 29 on this model? Will there be any adjustments ? TIA. Great bike. :)
and Great review.
Thanks Chris. Yeah this bike is 27.5" only. I don't think it has the clearance for a 29" wheel. I put one of my spare 29" wheels next to the frame, and pretty certain the tire would rub the seat tube.
Question re the crank replacement, did you have to replace the bottom bracket as well? If so what brand/type did you use? Cheers!!!
Yes you would have to replace bottom bracket. It's a threaded BB, and the size is 73mm bb shell. The length of the square taper one was 122.5. If you upgrade to say Shimano crankset, you'd need a hollowtech style BB with the same dimensions.
@@CobraKyle thanks so much for that! Super helpful 🤙 looking forward to more vids!
Buying mine tomorrow.
$1099?
@@star727798 yeah bro it's a great bike
@@Orney bought my too after left the comment. It’s a good bike. I really like it.
Nice!
Thank you! Cheers!
San quentin 1 or bobcat trail5?
Hi can you please share me your review which is best bike Marin San Quentin 1 or Trek Marlin7?
Very different bikes. The Marlin is more an XC style bike for pedaling around easy to moderate trails. If you are interested in riding a bit harder, the San Quentin is a way better choice.
Hey dude, what about a comparison between plolygon xtrada 6 and San qiuntenn 1
I might actually have an Xtrada coming in for review! Stay tuned
0:56 - This is my first time watching your channel and I'm not sure what to make of your right eye blink when saying "I want my reviews on this channeling to be my honest and unbiased opinion" 🤔
Nice video, though.
@@CobraKyle why yt didn't notified me about this comment:(
I went to my local dealer shop yesterday and they basically had two options for me(both Marin) I ended up buying San Quentin 1.
But they gave me a small, though I'm 5'8. Frame tube length coming at 15". Do I need to go back and change it to a Medium? Please Advise.
@@karanpuloriya8456 yeah I would say a medium would be much better. Small is way too...well small for someone 5'8"
@@CobraKyle Thank you for your advice. looking forward to more amazing and insightful videos.
can you convert the quick release into a thru axle?
I don't believe that you can on this bike.
Lots'a love, coffee-cheers, & Mabuhay, from tropical Philippines!
haha yeah that bike was a disaster. I made a whole video about it if you want to see it fall apart: ruclips.net/video/siouX_a2Rp4/видео.html
Is 6'1 a good hight for this bike?
I would say go for an XL frame at 6'1"
Hey Cobra Kyle, as you said in the video, im not able to change the rear wheel at all? Meaning if i were to change the rear wheel with a wheelset that has a quick release i am not able to fit it?
I would love to have loudee hubs om this bike
@@CobraKyle okay thank you!
@@CobraKyle ok thanks
Does San Quentin 2 and 3 have thru axle in front and rear
Yes they do!
I can’t get past the odd sized rear QR axle.
enjoyed the review.
I've got a marin nail trail 6. added a dropper , some pro taper flat pedals, tubeless. got the bike it's 4th set of tires. vattarios waiting patiently for their installation . it's Size xxl. 30 lbs of fun.
Thanks! The Nail Trail is a sweet bike. Sounds like you got some good upgrades for it. 30 pounds for an XXL is pretty impressive!
Nice bike.
It truly is!
That’s a nice bike
I agree!
