A) Unit 5 Topic 3 (Beginning) 1. List and explain 5 of the 8 causes of why Industrial Revolution began in Britain. Here are some helpful hints that you may want to include. a. What is the important of the proximity to water? Abundant access to rivers and canals created the conditions fro easy and inexpensive trade b. Why was coal the main resource of the early Industrial Revolution? There were large deposits of coal under the surface of England's soil. c. How did increase agricultural productivity lead to urbanization? *College Board likes this. Crop rotation guaranteed that nutrients wouldn't be used up by soil and that soil would be fertile making agriculture production much more productive. Seed drills also guaranteed that farmers would plant seeds at the exact location and depth needed for maximum growth. d. What is the importance of government to the Industrial Revolution? (Hint: Risk!) It made entrepreneurs feel safe to take risks and build buisnesses without the fear that the government would take away what they worked for. e. According to Mr. Heimler where did much of the accumulated capital come from? Wealth generated from the African slave trade f. Give an example of how inventors were a necessary cog (part) of the Industrial Revolution. Inventions such as the spinning Jenny gave rise to factories which started the Industrial revolution in mass * Another secondary cause of the Industrial Revolution were the contributions of inventors such as Richard Arkwright who invented the water frame. This device harnessed water to power machines. This enabled goods to be made in mass. There was no need for a skilled laborer who would make a product from "start to finish". These machines would have to be located near a water source. Therefore, factories had to be built near water sources. Thus Richard Arkwright is sometimes considered the "Father of the Factory System". *You may use part of this paragraph in your essay. Not word for word mind you!

Another great video! Yes indeed, the Industrial Revolution was probably the most significant event in human history. A couple of comments: 1. People in Scotland tend to get angry with people who say "England" to refer to all of the island of Great Britain. Scotland played an integral part in the Industrial Revolution. For example, James Watt was Scottish and invented his famous steam engine in Scotland. 2. It is an excellent question to ask: "Why did the Industrial Revolution occur in Great Britain and not previously in China?" The resources mentioned in the video all existed in China. China had a big empire with even more people than in Great Britain. Chinese people invented many of the necessary industrial processes. Indeed, there was a greater production of iron and other industrial goods by machine in China than in Great Britain before the Industrial Revolution. But things never quite took off in China the way that they did in Britain. Why? The answer is that, to draw a comparison with a computer, it was not the "hardware" of human and natural resources. It was the "software" of British democracy, human rights and rule of law. Particularly patent law that allowed inventors to reap the fruits of their inventions. The video touches upon this by mentioning property rights. But it was much more than that.
@@heimlershistory You are very welcome! An excellent book on this subject is "A culture of growth: The origins of the modern economy" by Joel Mokyr. There is a good review of this book that summarises its argument in the Washington Post article here: www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/10/28/why-the-industrial-revolution-didnt-happen-in-china/
Amazing! no mention of steam power and James Watt's invention of the first practical steam engine in Scotland! The single cause of the industrial revolution! It was a power revolution.
Great connections made in this video . . . Fascinating that after 250,000 years of existence for Homo sapiens, industrialization is finally here! And not in China! Thank you for this segment!

Hello I have a question that was on my Unit 5 quiz: did the British state invest financially in its factories or did the middle class do so? I put the British state but I now believe its the middle class since they had incentives to gain for doing so. Is this correct?
Mr heimler can you help me write an saq because in our class we have a college board test online and there is 37 MC and 1 Saq and there is a 47 min period so it’s practically 10 min or less and it’s hard since barely any time
