“I bought these chisels because I stopped buying tools.” This comment goes down in the history books. Loved the whole chisel part. One of your best videos!
You are my favorite maniac. At yesterday mornings flea market I got a tub of tools for $3.50. I did not look in the tub until 10 pm. Treasures. Today is another flea market. Maybe I will find a marlin spike. Nice video.
Son in law is in the Royal Navy (this week got his 25 years badge) and I got him a very nice marlin spike at a car boot sail along with a Sheffield made rigging knife. He uses the scraps of different coloured ropes to make the most amazing decorative pieces. He says it passes the time when off duty on long six month tours. This video is brilliant as always !!.
1000 dollars is the new 500 dollars. Every time I go to buy supplies, materials, hardware, parts, etc. that I use in the shop, the price is higher than the last time. A hundred dollars gets you nowhere at today's prices. Your Marlin turned out really nice Scout! I have a 5-gallon bucket of chisels and punches sitting in the corner, so now I want to dig through there and see if there's anything good to make my own Marlin out of.
Great video and restoration of the Marlon spike. My favourite part was the bit about saving your vice/vise. The wedges are such a simple tool and save a lot of heartache later. They allow you to firmly hold a tapered piece as well as alleviating the stress on your vice/vise.
Very smart to use your vises proper. I made vise spacers out of square stock from 1" - ¼" and welded a fender washer on the end. Little bit of time will save your vise.
Always amazed at those transformations. It’s funny about the $1300. That is the price that’s just expensive enough for them to make money, but cheap enough so you won’t attempt it yourself or get a second opinion. And yes, sanding floors is a nightmare.
John, one of the best episodes ever. I am ashamed to admit that I own zero marlinspikes (as of today), but I will be on the lookout. It looks like a simple tool, but the simplicity highlights your fine workmanship. Also, my kitchen faucet started to leak last Saturday, so I called a plumber whom I had met several months ago when he helped me with a load in the Home Depot parking lot. It grieved me so, to have someone else install a new faucet in the sink where I had previously done all the piping, including a new garbage disposal. But I was pressed for time, so I called him in. He worked like a surgeon as his helper handed him tools and held the work up top. I called him the morning after Labor Day, they arrived on time at 2:00 pm that afternoon, and they were done in 45 min with everything leak-free and working great. It’s nice to know I have someone I can call in the event of future plumbing chores. Thanks again for all your fine work.
Elaine- When you pay for a job and it’s done right and professionally it’s a pleasure, on the other hand nothing is worse then paying for a professional job and getting amateur work. I love seeing plumbers work their magic because I hate plumbing! 🫣😂👍
The Marlin spike looks terrific. I have only one on a pen knife I purchased when I used to go sailing back in the early 80's. This is still in my "sailing" tool box. Dave.
I absolutely am obsessed with marlin spikes, fids, awls, and the like. So many daily uses. I make them in my basement from old tool parts as well as titanium. I have learned many tricks to make the process streamlined and perfect. I put the item into my drill and spin them up against many different grits of sandpaper until I get them absolutely perfect, I find the drill helps a ton to keep them extremely symmetrical. I've made a tumbler filled with ceramic media (nalgene bottle and drill). After a while of tumbling you achieve a perfect finish with no sanding lines anywhere
From scrap to good looking, useful tool. That marlin spike is beautiful. Among the jobs i will leave to the pros is replacing warped, peeling decking with composite. What a job. Never again, but the results look much better.
Great video 👍 Fantastic job with the Marlin spike👍. That was pretty interesting with the wire wheel. Those disc will make great fender washers. Those step drill bits really come in handy 👍. That was a great find on eBay for all those punches and chisels. Again you did a fantastic job turning that punch into a great looking Marlin Spike . Those spikes do come in handy for untying those tight knots 🪢 in rope. What a awesome way to repurpose that old rusty tool! Another great shot of Old Glory 🇺🇸 flying in the Breeze. Well again great video and can’t wait to see what you do on Monday. Have a great evening and fantastic weekend. 😃👍
That marlin spike really really came out nice. Smooth and polished looks good snd I’m sure it works great on the ropes knots. $1300 per job Ha! Richie is correct. Bought my house 44 years ago and sanded the floors and put down 4 coats of Flecto Varathane clear. Boy it sure looked good but I’ll never do that again. Still holding up pretty good though. Have a wonderful weekend ScoutCrafter.
I love fender washers I buy packs of them whenever I go to my favorite hardware store. Those would be great for the sides of buffing wheels to stiffen them up if needed. Great marlin spike. I need to check to make sure I have one 😂 great show
Wonderful job bringing that old spike back to life, Scout. Love your "rants". You are dead on with your thoughts and comments. Keep up the good work! 😄👍
If I am not wrong (and probably am), the wide "chisel" you showed is properly called a "slick". It is usually used by hand to shave the final fit of a timber frame joint. It's sad someone welded it up to hammer on because they are usually hand-pushed to pare joints, no mallet involved! If it possibly could be saved at all, I vote the slick for restoration to the extent possible. A new one today is somewhere around $150-$250. Thanks.
Good idea John about taking used up and spent tools and taking them apart and reusing them for something else. If Ii have something that will not work anymore, I take out all the nuts, bolts, screws ,washers, etc. You save a lot of money saving that hardware.
It’s always interesting and fun to do, is repurpose a tool or machine for another purpose. Found it interesting when you took the wire wheel apart. Thanks for the video, enjoyed watching.
Taking apart a wire wheel for a couple washers is the kind of nutty thing I do, I just can't stand to waste stuff that I see a possible use for............And yes if you don't have any get yourself a set of step-drill bits, you won't regret it.
I've been on my roof making repairs for the last 15 years. A few months ago a storm blew a piece of flashing off at literally the only spot I couldn't safely get to. Had to bite the bullet and had a roofing guy come out. $600 for a 5 minute job! 🤣
If you are getting asphalt shingles, be sure to get Architectural Shingles. Not the 3 Tab Shingles! They cost more, but the extra thick shingles adds insulation and less noise from rain. They also withstand higher winds. The amenities outweigh the cost!
Not sure if I've noticed you using that belt sander/grinder attachment before. Looks handy. Why that one over your normal belt sander? What a transformation that Marllin Spike! BTW, I had tree guy come today to take down 7 very tall (50 ft?) overgrown , scrawny spruce trees that would eventually be heading for my roof and/or utility wires. The guy is great, thorough, cleans up superbly ... great crew, zero complaints. The price ... $1300! To be honest, I thought that was fair for northern NJ and he's coming back later this month to do more. But I could help but laugh at the $1300 price! Dan
I prefer my little 1x30 belt sander but I used the 1x42 for today’s project because I happen to have the 60 grit coarse belts for that machine and I think I only have 80 grit for the 1x30. 😂 They are similar but the 1x30 is my favorite. 😃👍
Another great show John, but I think you can get a few more hours from the wire brush. Refit to a smaller fender washer & away you go 😂😂 The marlin spike came out amazing also another great resto. Till Mish Mosh Monday Have a good weekend. 👍🏻🇦🇺
I agree I sanded the floors in my house years ago I won’t do it again, 20 years ago I built a 53 x 30 work shop in the backyard did it all it will soon need a new roof, I’m not going to do it. They can do in a day what takes me a week or more. It kills me to hire someone for something I can do but at 67 I can’t take it with me.
The best part about roofing is when they come with 6 guys and everyone knows their job. Unlike us when we get to the top of the roof and forgot our hammer! 🫣😂👍
Hey !John récupèrer les plaques sur les brosses à nettoyer, très bonne idée. Faire une pointe non agressive pour démêler les cordes pas mal comme idée non plus. Très beau travail et une bonne leçon. ❤
ScoutCrafter, I enjoyed today's restoration of the marlinspike. I was wondering if you considered using your lathe for the restoration. The marlinspike handle end would be nice with a diamond knurl. Bob

Nice ScoutCrafter but I want to see more about that belt sander you had used for that project not your usual belt. I want to know more about that since I do not have a belt sander but looks like you are useing a grinder
John- Funny thing, when I first bought the house I sold my two classic cars to pay for a roof, gutters and some windows. I was 35 years old and I had a choice of 20 year shingles or 40 year shingles at a slight additional cost. I was afraid the extra weight so I chose the 20 year shingles and remember telling my Dad “I’ll be in a much better financial position when I’m 55 so I’ll worry about it then”. 😂. The roof just lost a few shingles over the last 5 years 4 shingles and one dormer tile. They replaced them all Wednesday. 😃👍
$ 113.00 is the new 1.300.00 dollars and you would ask yourself Why Take a simple guess why everything is so expensive just about everyone knows the answer to that question .. Great teaching video today. I don’t have a Marlin spike! I just had rear brakes, calipers etc done on my wife’s car guess what $1300 dollars!!!
It’s the new base price for everything! 🫣😂👍
From the 13th worker! The chisels was a great buy. Your restoration- recreation was a fabulous job. It’s a very useful tool. Thank You
Thanks Jess!

Good one John, Marlin Spike came out awesome as usual! For some strange reason, I really enjoyed see the wire wheel taken apart.
I've got two marlin spikes. Both of them are on folding pocket knives.
Now you've got a real nice one. Good job.

Thanks John, nice job on the marlin spike, as the son of a merchant marine I was brought up with these, I'd like to see you sort out that slick too !

The Marlin Spike looks great! Don't feel bad, I do not climb up onto the roof either. I let the young ones do that. Thanks for sharing this.
In Northern Jersey it’s only $1290, because everything in NYC is more expensive 😳
Another great show John, but I think you can get a few more hours from the wire brush. Refit to a smaller fender washer & away you go 😂😂
The marlin spike came out amazing also another great resto.

Step drill bits rule. Shivers me timbers,ha
Hey, John, would you consider trying to bring back, to original, that large chisel that had its end filled in?
Yes- Especially since so many people want to see it done. 😃👍
I guess I better get me a Marlin spike I don't want John thinking I am a maniac!

As always the spkie looks great.
"Shiver Me Timbers"
Uh-oh.... Better get in the workshop and make a Marlin spike (or two) least I be considered a maniac..
great spike!
There are three estimates, Kinda what I thought, a little less than I thought or holy crap that much.
ScoutCrafter,
I enjoyed today's restoration of the marlinspike. I was wondering if you considered using your lathe for the restoration. The marlinspike handle end would be nice with a diamond knurl.
Bob
Bob- Funny you mention that, I too thought a little knurling or a lanyard hole would be nice! 😃👍
4 yrs ago I had 3 layers of roofing torn off ,new plywood underlayment and new roofing on the complete house ....it was a lot $....$1300 x10
That’s a bargain for all that work! 😃👍
What kinda maniac gets me 😂 every single time!!
Yep, had a bloke come around to give us a quote to remove the rubbish from my 93 year old mum’s yard. @@ScoutCrafter Another one of those world wide conspiracies😂😂
I’ve come to learn that money goes out a lot faster than it comes in. It seems everyone wants to get rich on each job for mediocre work.
It’s crazy today! You’re spot on!
$1300 for THAT? Get outta here! I can hear my late brother in law Big George (who was from New York city) bellowing from his grave!
I have to make one of these.
Hi Scout,
I’m a big fan of your channel. I’ve learned a lot from your videos, and I really enjoy watching how you restore old tools. I wanted to ask for your advice on something. I found an old pair of scissors from J.A. Henckels Zwillingswerk Solingen, model 43420, that belonged to either my grandfather or great-grandfather. They hold a lot of sentimental value, and I’d like to restore them, but I’m a beginner and don’t want to risk damaging them, until I get some experience fixing other stuff, especially since I want to preserve the numbering and original details.
Do you have any advice on how I could restore them properly? I’m particularly interested in what kind of wire brush or tools I should use to remove the rust without affecting the details. I’d appreciate any suggestions you can offer before I do anything with them.
Is there an email where I could send you some pictures to show you their condition? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
You gotta do that fro, (large framing chisel), justice. cut out the plug, clean up the socket and re-handle it. I think it's more of a carpenters chisel, being less than 3" wide, but none the less, give it back it's dignity.
I’ve restored two but never use them, I wonder what the last owner of that slick used it for that he wanted a short handle? 🤔
These days $100 is the new $20
I really don’t want an estimate of 1300 on Friday the 13th
Every NYC tradesman today has that price as their base…. 🫣😂👍
Just cost me a grand to have my chimney taken down. I ain't going up there.
