      I think, I am also studying, I think the formula tells us not to use 17.
      You need half times the height times the base. How high is the triangle and how wide it is, than you half it, that's your Area. 17 is not the height neither is it a base, it's not in the equation.
      Yet the 17 is useful when finding the total surface area, but for the Area, no, 17 is useless.
      I hope I am making some sense.
