There's a much simpler and faster way to do this, First you do the base area which is Length times width (For rectangular prisms) then the perimeter which is 2L + 2W then the formula Ph + 2B and that's it!
Volume is cubed b/c it fills up while area is squared. It's not really about it being 3D or 2D in that way. Since area is the covering of a 2D shape (you are right)...but think about surface area. It's the measuring of "outside area" so to speak which is a combination of 2D shapes to build the 3D prism. Think of a cardboard box.. how much material would you need to cover the box? Area would measure each of the 2D rectangles that make up a 3D shape. Volume measures filling it which is cubic measurement. Hope that makes sense!

It's two triangles. instead of dividing by 2 and adding the two triangles. He left that part out. You would still get 60 if you divided by two and added the 2 triangles.

@BlueStoneTimes It’s been a year so u probably know now, but it’s all the sides, not top or bottom. (Faces not bases) so if u have a pyramid then not the bottom and prism not bottom or top, just sides (faces)
