I have an old army surplus gas mask pouch that I have tied onto my saddle for my dump pouch, and it doubles as a storage bag for my saddle, lineman belt and tether when I get out of the tree.
Just got myself a sit drag to pair with my rock harness. Good info in this video, gives me a better idea of how to move forward with my own DIY saddle.
@@HuntingFarmerOfficial I bought mine from Mr Rice before he started the company. It doesn’t have the pleats or the new waist buckle but it’s an awesome saddle because it is so light, so well built and has everything you need in the right places imo.
Appreciate the video, your honesty and less than bias opinion. It's nice to see the pros and cons, rather than just one or the other. And the fact that you made it all yourself is awesome.
For remote public land hunting when you are trying to pattern deer or hunting in an area you are new to the saddle cannot be best just because of portability and weight. You done a nice job with that saddle.
Looks comfy but I couldn't do it lol. I had a climber stand that the seat broke through one time when I was about 20 ft high. Scared the crap out of me. Lol. From then on its a big box blind or ground blind.
It’s definitely not for everyone! Sometimes while hanging there hunting I think to myself “I can’t believe I’m hanging here by this rope”! 😂🤣😂 Thanks for watching 👍
I'm very interested in saddle hunting also but like you, it's hard to spend the money on one of those commercial saddles like the trophy line that I want. So I ordered one of those rock climbing harness like yours off Amazon but I'm going to just use that instead of trying to sew anything or add anything to it. But I do already have one of those sit drags that I got a few years ago if I need it.
It’s a unique feeling hanging off the side of a tree. Like anything else, it doesn’t take long to get used to it. Thanks for watching John. Happy New Year’s 👍
@@HuntingFarmerOfficial Yes they do. But, after watching my fire last night I thought, "Hey - what about using a canvas log sling as my saddle" .....$10 - $30 on amazon with webbing already sewed in.
@@toddw9518 that just might work. Not sure the working strength of their straps are. Remember to be safe. No amount of money saved is worth injury or death!
I have started the daunting task of saddle hunting gear . There is so much out there it almost is overwhelming at times. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this topic
Very Informative. You have probably already heard of Matt from Madhunts Adventures.. if not he has some great videos on saddle options. I got the Cruzr XC because of his suggestion and I definitely was not disappointed changing from my Tethrd Mantis. Great Video!!
Matt has a great channel. I love his content! Good to hear your input. The Cruzr seems like a great option. Thanks for watching and for your input. I appreciate it 👍
I bought a Muddy Safety Line. It comes with about 30’ of 8mm rope which cut into my tree tether and linesman rope. It also comes with two purisik knots. 👍
Very well done! I hunt out of everything but a saddle. I am definitely going to be researching them for next season. I have enjoyed following your videos!
@@HuntingFarmerOfficial Ha! Horses can be great....or they can be a great pain in the butt! I've seen those saddles you made, but never heard what they were called. You did a nice job on it. Was is comfortable?
Awesome bud ! Excellent safety message !Looks like you’ve got it figured out pretty good ! Looking forward to seeing more with the saddle in the future . Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching. South Africa is a long way away 😁 I have sat in the saddle for 4 to 5 hours at a time. Once adjusted to your personal preference, it is extremely comfortable 👍
Great video, Dave! I like hearing your pros and cons. I used a rock climbing harness and DIY Sitdrag my first deer season and then purchased five saddles to test and review the following spring to help me decide what I did and didn’t like. Looking forward to seeing what you do for the next season! 👍🏼
I doubt I’ll be buying 5 of them (at least not if my wife has anything to do with it) 😂🤣😂 I enjoyed your through review on the saddles. A ton of effort for that one. Thanks for watching. I appreciate it 👍
What is your strategy for shooting to your right or your weakside. I'm assuming you shoot right handed. I'm a new saddle hunter as well this past season.
Always try to set up so the deer won’t come from the weak side 😁 In all seriousness, I can stand on my platform and put my back to the tree. Self filming becomes even more difficult at that point for myself!! Thanks for watching! I appreciate it 👍
Good looking saddle what material is the body. Looks like you did a great job making it. Dumb pouches are a must for sure. My first was the teather mantis it was ok but I really like my cruzr im going to try get a review video done sometime
Thanks for this video. I'm considering doing something similar, as ill be public land hunting next season, and I don't want to heft a climber or hang on miles back in the woods. I'm not a fan of the commercially made ones, can't justify the cost.
Looks and sounds to me like you've got that thing exactly how you want it now. Why would you spend money on a commercial made one? Just to see maybe if they thought of something you didn't that makes it a lot more comfortable?
Great job on making the saddle. Do you find using a saddle for a while puts pressure on your ankles or do you have the foot stand angled down to avoid that? Thanks for sharing and Happy New Year!
Good question. I do put a slight angle in my foot stand to help eliminate ankle fatigue. I also find myself standing on the edge of the platform instead of flat footed on the top of the stand. Thanks for watching. Happy new year’s 👍
Thanks for watching! I had no issues with the canvas. It seemed to work well. I won a commercially made saddle and will be spending some time in that this season 👍
Thank you.
I'm really glad you mentioned rifle hunting from a saddle. I'm new to saddle hunting, and only hunt with a rifle. Thanks. These are great videos.
I appreciate you watching 👍

@@HuntingFarmerOfficial Welcome.
Nice project. I like my ladder stand
The ole ladder stand...tried and true! Nothing wrong with a ladder stand!!! Thanks for watching. I appreciate it 👍
I made one from a board some rope and one of those cushions you buy in the hunting section at Walmart it's comfortable
Thanks for watching! Sounds like you got a very practical (and affordable) option 👍
I don’t think I could use one. I like yours. I liked that you sew. Great video full watch👍🏻❤️😁🦊
Shh! Don’t tell my wife I can sew, next she’ll want me to patch my own jeans! 😂🤣😂
Thanks for watching Fox. I appreciate it 👍
My friend Steve just got one for Christmas
Lucky Steve 😁

Thanks for watching 👍
Yea , but can you take a nap in it? Really nice review
Most definitely! Especially if you run a back band. That gives you a second point of contact around your torso and makes it super comfortable!
I usually don’t nap when I’m in the tree but no doubt you could 😁
nice job ,, thank you for sharing your tips and experience..
good tool, make it easier for work..good luck always for you ..

Nice work. Try a Cruzr, you won’t be sorry

That is no doubt the biggest advantage...lightweight!! Now if only I didn’t lug 25lbs of camera gear along...😂🤣😂

Do ya have a DIY dump pouch video
Thanks for watching! I haven’t made a video specifically on my DIY pouches
@@HuntingFarmerOfficial I ordered the Eberlestock A2MP pouch, figured that’s the sweet spot between a dump pouch and a roll pouch

Checkout Catman Outdoors he uses saddles also , you might could pick up some tips from him.
