Julio was a HUGE international star at this time but couldn't get a real foothold in the U.S. Johnny was a big fan of Julio's from early on and gave him repeated exposure on The Tonight Show, enough to help him get recognized and respected.
I'm glad he didn't. He would have become tainted.
He had a solid run in the 80s. And he’s still rolling. A supreme talent.
I mean “To All The Girls” was huge by the time of this episode. That song and the duet with Diana Ross broke him in the U.S.
I am not really sure why he wanted to sing in English, his voice is so fit for French, Italian, Portuguese, and of course his native Spanish.

Over 35 years since this originally aired and it's still hysterical to me. My mom passed in 1991 and this was one of her favorite songs, I remember us watching this together and cracking up. Johnny's impression is spot on and Julio is a champ for being able to sing the song while barely containing his laughter. Just brilliant!

Johnny is incredible! He can sing, replicate a voice, follow rhythms, and NEVER CRACK a smile like he's losing it! Julio lost it several times, but not Johnny! Fantastic control and professionalism.
This ranks up there with Mr. Carson's "Rhinestone Cowboy" performance. How in the world Julio maintained a straight face enough to still hit his amazing talent still baffles me. This is the way you do late night talk show comedy.

This was one of the great Johnny Carson moments. He sang so well, you wonder why he didn't sing more often. He started out trying to sound like Willie, but sang more like himself. This is one of the great songs ever written and recorded, and should be on anyone's list of the best love songs of all time.
I don't how Julio Iglesias kept from laughing so hard when Johnny Carson came out as Willie Nelson, he kept it together right to the end!!

It is sad to approach the era where there is more life behind me than ahead of me. So many of the finest experiences seem trivial in their time. We blink and it disappears from sight. Thank you Mr. Carson. Many of my most treasured and powerful experiences are larger because you are there with me as it happened... I relive the joy and pain each time i view them.... Timeless
No one late night has that kind of range today. New level of respect for the best.
Holy cow where did the years go? I saw this the first time it aired, a 23 year old new dad...I had to put my hand over my mouth to keep from waking up my wife and our 5 month old daughter. The genius of this performance is that Johnny knows exactly what he's trying to do and how to do it--- He does a leave it all on the stage imitation of Willie and even gives it some emotional depth...it is Julio who can't keep a straight face! It works precisely because JOHNNY is doing it. It's an oblique kind of thing but to a comedic genius...straighforward stuff. I miss those nights 11:30-1am in the early days then (like in thus bit) 11:39-12:30....
I've watched this at least 1000 times so far Julio is amazed and cracking up at the same time and Carson staying in character CLASSIC...

In a day and age where late night show hosts think they are social activist, this is a reminder of what a late night show should be all about; that is making people smile and laugh even if it's just for a few moments. Johnny Carson you were the best, RIP.

Johnny was the best TV host who ever lived and Julio is a class act and true artist to pull himself together and nail that song. Entertainment like this will never exist again.
I was blessed to watch this the night it aired. Johnny definitely nailed this and I'm SO happy Julio went with it so well and didn't laugh! This is a huge moment of Johnny's Tonight Show.
I had begun to be aware of Julio during this time and am a lifelong fan.
Johnny always made Julio comfortable by speaking Spanish to him when he appeared by speaking Spanish to him during commercial breaks and when he felt Julio didn't understand a question.

Julio, one of the world's hugest stars could never quite make it in the U.S. Johnny never stopped bringing him on to show his stuff to America and build a following. Julio loved him.

Nina Baugh I read that Carson wasn't much for practicing before the show but he said he wanted this song to be as good as he could make it and he spent a lot of time on it...and it shows...thank you Mr Carson...I didn't always watch the show but fortunately I was watching the night this aired

I saw it the night this was aired and thanks to platforms like this, I regularly keep on coming back to watch it. It is funny, it is utterly charming and it’s very touching nowadays. Of Julio, Willie and Johnny, only Julio is still alive at 80 years young and looks to be rather frail.
Imagine. My mom used to be so tickled at Julio’s pronunciation of eks-stah-cee” and we all never missed a night of Johnny as much as we could help it. Seeing them both in a skit was just the limit for JC and JI fans - a double serving of chocolate sundaes!
