found this through the majority report comment section
sam cut off jamie and people were upset, saying they wanted to hear more jamie and where then here

Cause Sam's an incrementalist, which frustrates most socialists, communists, anarchists...sam is an old dog i guess. Jamie is fresh and gives a real good marxist perspective to the topics on majority report. majority report for me has kind of lost me with them pushing the 'hold your nose and vote for a creepy old man with atrocious policies" approach. They are pushing this approach even after 2016...time for workers to band together...dump the incrementalists as they just become complicit with the capitalists

@@chwest31 Yeah. It's a bummer too cause I've seen him speak more openly about it and he seems in many ways very open to a left-libertarian critique and solutions but he's convinced that only marginal and incremental change are possible and therefore are all we should aim for. It's one thing to support immediate harm reduction and improvement in people's lives but it's another thing entirely to rely solely on that as a means of bringing about change.

@@tigerstyle4505 I think it's more that he just has at base a very utilitarian approach when it comes to things. It's not what about is possible/impossible, he just wants to achieve what is most likely to be possible first i.e. to establish a social democracy with a strong egalitarian bent that can hopefully move towards socialism and communism

First time listener, i'm a regular viewer of novara media which hosts amazing podcast content online in the audio tap of there website with NO PAY WALL cause information is a right.
I just recently came across the majority report which is entertaining, but this was great can't wait to check out some shows... would be amazing for the US new left media and Novara media to be collaborating on more shows and discussion on strategy as in both nations we have a real opportunity to capture the tools of the state.

Honestly with the possibility of Corbyn/Bernie it is a surprise that there's not been much coordination between UK/US left media. Would certainly be nice to see people like Ash or Owen Jones doing more appearances stateside.

Indeed. When ya look at most any revolutionary periods the vast majority have seen explosions in "luxuries" that were snatched from the wealthy and were now available to all. Concerts, plays, food, motels, games, free time, etc. They made sure to not only meet material need but to also meet cultural and personal desires. Even in the middle of civil wars and other incredible adversity because it was viewed as a fundamental element of liberation. To a large degree there was a lot of that already within poor and working class culture in many places where there was a culture and entertainment by, of and for the people. Emma Goldman said: “I want freedom, the right to self-expression, everybody's right to beautiful, radiant things. ' Anarchism meant that to me, and I would live it in spite of the whole world - prisons, persecution, everything. Yes, even in spite of the condemnation of my own closest comrades I would live my beautiful ideal.”. I feel that's something that was abandoned by many after the fall of "The New Left". Expropriation used to be viewed as for more than just bread and land. Both the Black Guard and the Bolsheviks took the gold, jewels, art, fine clothing, etc, from the rich and both wacked it up between the people and created communal spaces where any and all could enjoy.

Apart from Keynesianism being non-viable because there aren't the resources available for exponential 3% growth forever within climate constraints especially, to be redistributed through taxation and public services spending, it's not possible within globalised markets and the vast web of international treaties and structures enforcing globalisation of markets. To that extent I don't believe that the Preston Model can be applied at national level within structures like the EU and TTIP and neo-NAFTA etc which explicitly forbid the closing of markets to foreign entry and competition, as by having an exclusively purchase-locally policy for public services. The EU is increasingly requiring contracting out and outsourcing of public service provision under Freedom of Establishment and specific industry policies like the Fourth Rail Package which mandates UK-style privatisation of national railways and breaking up of train line networks to allow for entry of foreign railway companies into each national network, and which of course forbids Labour's policy of renationalisation. The Preston/Cleveland model at national level would look like, and neccesitate, conscious and systematic undoing of globalization, and we have to be honest about that, with ourselves most of all.
I agree with Jamie's querying of the word "luxury". It does connote excess and specifically exclusivity - something not only nicer than necessary, but necessarily not available to most others, so that it triggers the psychological responses of being given a special treat as a child, that this means a reward and that you the consumer are special to be recieving such a thing, and that it is an expression, no matter how formally alienated as a commodity, of being loved. All of which combines to re-inforce among the rich pride in their wealth and status, the belief that they deserve their special rewards, and by implication that everyone else deserves the de facto punishment of being deprived of luxuries and of poverty in general, and because it is the most glaring form of conspicuous consumption is designed also to elicit both a sense of worthlessness, and the consequent depression and resignation, but also envy on the part of others, which then inculcates selfishness in the pursuit of luxuries rather than solidarity in the pursuit of equity.
By the way, all praise to godlike hero *Harvey Pekar,* who I first heard about the Cleveland model from in the pages of American Splendor, in an issue where he was talking about "Regionalisation" as an answer to Cleveland's economic decline during his lifetime.
