Property owners here leaving in droves for Ky and Tenn. So don't come down on the property owner trying to make some profit off a really huge investment. This is a Republic, not a Socialistic nation after all. People don't get crap for free; MY taxes(in every shape and form) pay for all "the free stuff"... even if they have self induced HIV.

CHECK! I did that in SF on Haight/Central for 14 months. I paid $250 for the same size but in 2008. Mine was the utility closet where the washer/ dryer would go. I also turned it into a loft. Then around the end of 2009 I finally got put on the lease. My rent went up to $538 and then a few more dollars extra every year after. My friends still have that place, but I moved in 2017. I lived in that city as a local. I never worried about rent, and could save to travel wherever.
Oh yeah, I was 26 then and it was fun! I would never want to do it again. (The closet part)
If you had a couple of beers that night, it was annoying to get down safely to go pee. (Especially if its more than once or my ex girlfriend complaining about it.) I have many good stories about that place.
Hope she finds a better living situation, cause she doesn't seemed as thrilled about the closet.

I sold most of my things and am finishing out a year’s contract while living in my vehicle. It’s totally illegal and if my employer finds out, I’m out of a job. That will mean loss of health insurance and default on a loan. Every social agency I contacted informed me I’m ineligible for assistance including SNAP. On weekends I eat whatever has been tossed from the work refrigerator; sometimes nothing. I go once weekly to a ‘no questions asked” food pantry. At this point, my long range plans are on indefinite hold as I take life one day at a time.

It looks as if I’ll be car dwelling one night only in the up-coming week, and may possibly be a live-in apartment sitter through June. The only stipulation, if that works out, is the care of eight cats, two dogs, two guinea pigs, and a tortoise. A friend of a friend of a friend sort of contact is going trekking in Russia and former Soviet states. If he approves, I can move in the first week of January. For the upcoming week, I’ll be staying in a rec. room in the attic of a church sextons apartment. I live 3 hours from San Francisco and I own a 1700 square foot home. It's in a great community on an 8,000 square foot lot with fenced RV parking and storage next to my garage. My house is about 3 years salary, if you have 2 years of Community College. With 3% mortgage interest rates it's far more affordable on a 15 year loan now, than it was in 1987 when I built it on a 30 year loan. I built it on a two year Community College degree income working at a car dealership. I was offered a teaching position at one of the community colleges in the Bay Area in 1994 and turned it down because of the high cost of living. People make choices and sometimes those choices are mysterious. Trust me that San Francisco isn't the only place where you can find good jobs.
I've always put myself in a position where the Employer needed Me just as much as I needed them. If you're Special Enough then maybe your employer will kick in an extra $10-15K a month towards the cost of living. Life is always about return on investment. If you set up housekeeping in a know Quicksand pit don't expect anyone to throw you a rope.

I still enjoy visiting, but living there, not even if you paid me decent money to. Had my brand new Lexus hit and run many times, people are phone zombies who will give you a death stare for walking into you, SFMTA is shady as hell and will give you fake parking tickets, there’s tons of violent people looking to start problems for no reason when you’re just minding your business, decent relationships are almost nonexistent because people there the majority of who lack morals and basic principles , etc... the list can go on and on aside from the high cost of housing/living. Outrageous! I moved to SF mid-80s and rented a studio downtown for $350. There was so much flavor and charm then - lots of artists, too. I only had one job to support myself and then had enough money to do things. How times have changed. Glad I moved out. I don't think I'd survive living in SF nowadays. Btw, no need to mention the man's HIV status! It has no relevance to the topic!

I think they were trying to point out the moral obligation of the homeowners bc the guy has a serious illness AND lost his dad and they raised his rent exponentially.

Why add the information that he’s HIV positive?? That had nothing to do with the interview!?

Dude charging $1200 for a closet is no better than landlord charging $3600 for entire apartment.

Nearly as bad here in Seattle as well, though when you start getting really high density homes and skyscrapers in neighborhoods not designed for that density... it can cause problems and certainly change that qualities that make it “San Francisco”

The expression she made and the "umm-hmmm" sound when she called the closet a second living area, cracked me up so much.

I don't know what is more shocking: a 33 year old women living in a closet or that she realizes she'll never be able to live her dream yet continues to live in San Francisco.

When the Dog comes first and the Kids come second as stated in the same sentence, there is something seriously wrong with that level of hierarchy.
