Former inmates, guards revisit Alcatraz

- The fabled prison on Alcatraz Island, once home to crime superstars like Al Capone, closed in 1963. Today it's the site of reunions for former inmates, guards and their families. Bill Geist tags along.
imagine coming back after all those years and still remembering where your cell is.
*walks in the cell* good times...
got back to your childhood home (if not still living there) and see if you remember where your room was.
Patrick Loftis not that hard to forget those type of things
It's not that big of a facility.
Not every room in a childhood home would look the exact same...
That dude didn't get out of prison until he was in his late 70s but in 4 years got a house, car, dog, and married? WTF am I doing wrong with my life....
popwarhomie same
Maybe he had hidden money somewhere.
It's not you, society and the economy is radically different today than it was in the 70s.
popwarhomie so are u awake??? Learn about the Rothchilds and ull know u are still in a nightmare....
Maybe it was all his wife's 🤔
*elder casually says "I robbed a store with a machine gun."*
0_Exotic_0 bank*
0_Exotic_0 lolol
Well when it happened 60 years ago,you kinda could just say it casually. Lol
Grandpa +10 swag points
0_Exotic_0 bank not store
Looking at these people today, all you see is innocent elders that seem to have no criminal history.
They served their time and learned from it.
Age can be very deceiving
Ratacatavious Brown fr
Ema in America alone, 63% of people above the age of 80 have done some serious time in prison
That's kinda the point of prison. If someone leaves a prison after their sentence is up, and returns to crime, the prison failed them.
"I robbed a bank with a machine gun"
caught me so off guard lmao what a badass
I love how they call them alumni LMAO
lmao smdh
Well, they are lucky enough to stay alive due to the harsh conditions and murders carried out by other inmates. If you were sent to Alcatraz, it was a death sentence.
WTF
Like it is a school 😂 😂😂
@@Skrilltrap no, not really
the interviewer looks like he did some time in alcatraz
bobby hayes *little too many addys
I thought so too...wahahahaha
That was hilarious! 😝🤣
I thought that he was, he looks like a child molestor as someone else has said.
Lmfao
2:00 "I'm not proud of the things he did"
**proceeds to have a shirt with his face on in the prison he was in**
He’s her dad
Lynn so?
New rocker she’s not proud of the things he did but she still loves him cause he’s her dad
Lynn yeah but maybe put a normal photo instead of his mugshot?
New rocker she was resembling that he was an inmate so she puts a photo of his mugshot on her shirt, just because she has a picture of his mugshot on her shirt doesn’t mean she can’t love him. I mean like dude is it that hard?
"Class of..." what is this a high school reunion?!
LMAOOO my thoughts exactly
The guy who finished his last bid 4 years ago and finally built a life for him, the honest way...man, that goes to show you that it's never too late to change. Ever. There's always hope.
I met him his name is William G Baker he’s pretty cool actually he signed my Alcatraz hat at the gift shop on the island
You should read his book truly inspirational
Yea if you white
He got it honestly...he married a woman with a house a car and a dog.
@@servicarrider don't matter he got a chance you must be black
I would really like to visit this place one day, not because it is a prison, but because of the greatest escape that Frank Morris and John & Clarence Anglin organised.
Good
Gerann Gerber I'm gonna tell you. It's soo cool. Some cells you get to go inside of. They even display one of the cells of one of the escapees. They show the fake bodies and everything. It's really cool.
I went there last January, it was really surreal. I’d highly recommend that you do it.
I have been there. It was like you could feel their energy without realizing but I just didnt really like the audio tour but im sure you will someday !
I did the night tour and honestly, it was one of the more eerie environments I have ever been in. I wouldn't have been surprised if the island was haunted. It's worth checking out if you have the ability to do so.
This would be the best place to be at during a zombie apocalypse
Genius
have you ever played call of duty?? not so smart
Adrianolini 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 well said
Bronea M THANK YOU 😂
Never played BO2 loser...

Wait what? I didn’t even notice what the reporter did
If you're obsessed with Alcatraz history you should read Al Capone Does My Shoes. It's a wonderful book.
A.R.M.Y Alnaggar I read it in 6th grade last year; but I found it boring, actually. I’m not saying it’s not a good book, that’s an opinion; but I am saying I was uninterested in the plot. There *is* plenty of factual backing to it though!
YoungAndMenxce Oh, yes it was really boring at first but once you get into the chapters you will be stuck on it, at least that’s what happened to me and my friends. I love that book and the second one as well 😅
A.R.M.Y Alnaggar
Sadly that’s not how I felt. I had to finish the book for a grade in language arts. You have your opinion, though; and I have mine.
YoungAndMenxce Yes, I understand. We probably have very different tastes in books, and that’s fine. 💫👍🏼👍🏼
A.R.M.Y Alnaggar h
This interviewer is moving weird af when he talks lol
He’s a reptilian
I’m pretty sure he has ADHD
He has cerebral palsy....
He announced he had Parkinson's in 2012
Im pretty sure he has some type of disorder.
I'm proud of that old man that's been out for 5 years. He seems happy to me. Good for him.
If they still offer the tours and you are in San Francisco I definitely recommend going to Alcatraz. I really enjoyed the tour. It’s self guided and you are giving a audio device to hear a narrator giving the you low down on what you are looking at. It’s a really good experience. 👍
Those cells were kinda claustrophobic...so glad I wasn't hardwired to be a criminal! I deff can't do the time!
roberto abrams haha
Craig F. Thompson There are biological aspects at play too. Impulisivity, aggression, reduced empathy etc. Some people are born with a higher chance of becoming criminals than others, unfortunately.
4:10 look at this tweaker just tweakin
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Thought he had some sort of seizure 😅
Loq
lol yeah... though he might have parkinsons
You guys are messed up
Scared straight by senior citizen criminals!
“I robbed a bank with a machine gun”
That was years ago
Crazy to think all these inmates and guards are now zombies and ghosts that haunt Sal, Finn, Al, and Billy in eternal purgatory of doom
You forgot Richthofen Nikolai dempsey and takeo
when the narrator said “bird man” like three crows crowed outside my window

2:00 Typical American love: He’s a criminal but yeah, he’s still my Dad. 😂
Atleast they love their parents, not like you. You dont even deserve love at all smh
“Typical” American love 🤣 like everyone’s parents in America are behind bars jeez...
@@duopeepee1302 So, be honest, would YOU love the animal they call the "Golden State Killer" in California .. in jail now as he is being prosecuted for FORTY years of serial rapes, murders, and stalking his former victims. If you could love an animal like that, you're mentally ill.
Honestly if I were a former inmate and someone offered me to go to a reunion at my former prison, I’d definitely be convinced they were gonna put me back in
Imagine being an ex-inmate returing for the reunion and seeing one of the guards in his old uniform
My great grandpa was Harold Stites. My grandpa lived on the rock as a boy with his parents and siblings before his dad was assassinated in The Battle of Alcatraz.
Went to Alcatraz last year its quite the impressive experience

I believe he may have Parkinson’s. Sure looks that way
Watching in Quarantine?

Inmate #1259 came for a book signing on Alcatraz a couple months ago. I asked him what he think happened to Morris and the Anglin brothers, and he believes they made it!
I think that they made it..cause that day a blue Chevrolet 1955 was stolen....
Karthik Subhadran lad not to Ruin your theory but it’s America San Francisco cars be gettin flogged 24/7 xD
I met him at a book signing there in 2017

I visited Alcatraz 2 years ago. And let me tell you. Its just awesome. So much history. And you can feel the energy still. Really spooky also. I recommend it
Doc Holliday how does it feel
Monte Gonzilla he just said it was spooky
❤️👌🏻🥂🌈
My visit will stay with me forever... impacting
@@jeanamariemelton Thats what the former inmates say about celling with another inmate. Its "impacting."
0:56 my man really just said George machine gun kelly
What machine gun kelly really was there? U didn't no that theres 2 diff ones genius
“Robbed a bank with a machine gun” that would be near impossible if he was actually using a machine gun. I don’t know why, but one of my pet peeves is when people mix up Rifle, Assault Rifle, and Machine Gun
machine gun back then was just any fully automatic gun I believe
Such an amazing and fascinating experience
Went there on July 2019
5:55 - Yeah, that's the important part...being able to leave when you want to!
My Drill Instructor said that during boot camp. "I get to go home tonight."
I remember visiting Alcatraz a couple of years ago and meeting former inmate Bill Baker there. He was talking about his experience and promoting the book he wrote. It was very interesting listening to him as an old man and trying to imagine the different version of himelf he was portraying in his account.
I’ve been there a few time , always very cool and you learn something new every time you go!
My friend and I thought about going on the tour and staying the night secretly. Would have been sent to jail :). They have security there at night.

*former prisoner of alcatraz looks scared by the interviewer*
*slithering*
he probably has a neurodegenerative disease
Parkisons
The reporter reminds me of a creepy Ned Flanders.
Even kinda sounds like him
“we’re going on vacation!”
“where?”
“alcatraz”
*ptsd*
Amazing to see these inmates who served on Alcatraz Today
Keep in mind. They were sent there ONLY for being dangerous at other prisons. Like a guy who smiles at you just before he sticks a knife in you to rob you.
Absolutely fantastic city .....never went to visit Alcatraz but went past it on the boat to angel island last September it was my first and most probably my last time in america unfortunately but wow what great memories I have ....thanks to casaloma hotel on Fillmore street aswell lol .

DON'T READ MY PROFILE PICTURE 😂😂😂I’m dead!
To the folks who posted this video, I probably would have enjoyed it if there had been Closed Captioning available. My hearing is so bad that I can't hear much of what is being said.
One of the most interesting places I’ve ever visited
I went today
Very amazing being there in person
I got to visit Alcatraz in the 70s. It felt surreal. Capone, the birdman, machine gun Kelly. That two hour tour was plenty of time on the Rock to keep me on the straight & narrow. Ha!
I also have been to Alcatraz island and it was vary interesting to see how that prison is run by the guards
I just see that level in Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4
Interviewer was geeked off another kind of rock
Something about Alcatraz just fascinates me so much
Been on the tour it was eerie and interesting
I learned about alcatraz today in social studies and reading class
Good. Finally someone not here because of a fucking game xD
Sokrachana Phan so keep that in your head and learn more...because a lot of Americans do not even know how many stars and strip are there in their flag
Wow, i would have thought the left would have tried to censor

I have met Bill baker on a field trip and got a signed book by him
Great video! So interesting
I went there and got bill bakers book signed by him
I went there yesterday and bought Mr. Baker's book and he signed it. Interesting stories he told.
So did I cheese

I left home years ago and when I went back it was scary. Then the unknown about who was still alive. Things really changed. I would be scared going back to prison. All the memories and smells would be to much.
Interesting post.. thanks.
Who else misses finding the parts for the plane and having to go spirit mode to do the codes and leaving Alcatraz to pack a punch the blunder gun and surviving on Mob of the dead.
Now that is one place I would love to look around for a day out.. Eerie too. 5:52 Very strong currents in the sea there.
I met Bill Baker who served time here :)

The food on Alcatraz was actually pretty good...they knew that having quality meals would keep the inmates content.

Birdman was a crazy dangerous homosexual. Multiple murders. INSIDE former prisons.
