I used to think I hated romance in stories because I was so accustomed to toxic or outright abusive relationships being presented as "cute" or worse "healthy", but then I saw relationships written like Lumity and I realized the issue was the delivery, not a lack of interest on my part. It's genuinely sad and deeply concerning just how many people call Lumity "boring" because their relationship isn't filled with arguments, insults, or physical assault which many stories portray (or for some reason interpretted by the audiences as) "passionate", "exciting", or "spicy" 🤢
Lumity is perfect specifically because it isn't perfect! They each have their own flaws and issues that sometimes negatively effect their relationship, but they have genuine respect and care for each other and practice healthy communication and are both EQUALLY willing to put in the necessary work to resolve their problems without ever resorting to blaming, belittling, or attacking each other! It's unfortunate just how rare it is to see a romantic relationship experience conflict that isn't born of literal abuse or resentment, and Lumity being a queer couple is honestly just a bonus! I want more m/f and m/m relationships portrayed like Lumity! (And more queer male characters in general because they are SEVERELY lacking and that's not fair!)
The icing on the cake is Lumity helps and encourages each other to grow, but they also each continue growing and expanding their personal arcs outside of their relationship through their own solo experiences and healthy relationships with other people! Their own personal relationships with friends and family are never brushed aside or undervalued by themselves or the narrative (another gross and unfortunate trend that needs to END) and it's honestly so amazing that kids get to see this! I absolutely adore how Lumity is written; how organic, natural, and sincere it is, and how their relationship is born of respect and friendship, but never becomes the number one most important priority of their lives that overshadows any other aspect of their lives (yet another problematic trend that needs to stop...)
Tldr: Lumity didn't just set the golden standard for queer relationships and representation, but also healthy, well written relationships in general! 💗💜💙

We definitely need more healthy relationships of ANY kind in the media, which in turn will lead to more healthy relationships with not just lovers but family as well which will also lead to less abuse of any kind from bullying to all other kinds. Because when you can communicate in a healthy way, it'll affect the ways people can see you and you see them. I think that The Owl House definitely set a high bar in that regards.

The problem with their relationship isn't that it's not toxic, it's that it essentially overwrote Amity's established character in a single episode. And that the personality it got replaced with is, well, frankly, it's just a bit boring and bland. Not to mention the direct opposite of the person she was a day before. If someone asked me to describe Amity's character, I would honestly struggle for a moment.
"She uh.. she's kinda reserved, and a bit uncertain but nice, I guess?"
You can have a healthy relationship and still make it interesting. And if they don't want an elitist bully as part of a relationship, then, honestly, they just shouldn't have their character date the elitist bully.

The thing that makes Lumity the best romantic relationship I've ever seen in any piece of media is that, not only is the relationship built up with a believable yet not rushed dynamic with two characters that serve as perfect for each other, but the relationship doesn't define their characters. In every other story, the relationship either never blossoms, or it does and it just becomes the entire defining trait of one or both of the characters. Here, both sides still fell like or straight up do have lives beyond being a couple. For Luz, we see the adventures she goes on, and for Amity, we know some of her personal life, and we still get the sense that she has more going on with our knowledge of her personal life. The relationship doesn't become their entire lives, just a part of it.

Another example that pisses me off IMO is Otis and Maeve's relationship from Sex Education. One of the aspects why I stopped after the second season because I felt that they've dragged the artificial will-they relationship drama for too long instead of confirming them as a couple or not and going from there.

My feeling on why Lumity works so well is how it was handled. It was, as you said, a healthy relationship that didn't spring out from nowhere. And it works because of the characters of Luz and Amity. Both start off as rivals that gradually form a connection through friendship then into a romance. And it works for Amity's character growth as well as she changes through the seasons! And it's my sincerest hope that shows like this paves the way for more queer representations like this.

I've loved my fair share of cartoon couples over the years but Lumity stands above them all in my opinion. Amity's individual arc was fantastic, the pacing of each step of their relationship was phenomenal, the two of them are absolutely adorable together, they handle their issues in a healthy way, and it's clear just how much they are in love with one another from each scene they share with each other. They warmed my heart more than any other fictional couple I've ever seen.

Dana Terrace stated that the reasoning for Owl House's cancellation was due to it being serialized, but considering how Dana reacted so satisfyingly after leaving Disney on Instagram, and how Gravity Falls wasn't cancelled due to its serialization, I think it was definitely the LGBTQ+ stuff.

    • @thedarkassassin0116
      @thedarkassassin0116 Год назад +13

If it was about LGBTQ+ representation, they would’ve turned Dana away when she pitched the show to them. They allowed the show to shine, but the ratings on Disney TV were poor in their opinion. That’s why they canceled it. Big mistake of course.
Dana of course is fine moving away from Disney, as she did burned some bridges with them due to the Don’t Say Gay Bill. Plus, what she wants to do is not what Disney TV wants, so if she wants to do another serialized show, either they negotiate to have it on Disney Plus or she looks for alternatives.

@@thedarkassassin0116 The thing is, there is the fact that Bob Iger was CEO when _The Owl House_ was greenlit, but when Bob Chapek became CEO during season 1 going into season 2B, the showrunners were told that the show was going to be cut down. By the time Bob Iger came back to replace Bob Chapek as CEO once again, the writing was on the wall for _The Owl House_ and it was forced to air its 3rd season as a trio of 45-minute episodic specials.

Yes, this is a perfect relationship indeed. The love relationship between Luz and Amity in the Disney series The Owl House is so beautiful and so wonderful. And it always makes me extremely happy to see these two characters together. I especially enjoy and love the moments they are kissing each other, they are holding hands, they lean their heads to each other and they look deeply into their eyes. These are so romantic and so heavenly moments. This is such a wonderful feeling that I feel whenever I see the characters Luz and Amity together. Thinking of this adorable relationship always makes me extremely happy. This is true. And this is one of the main reasons why I love to watch this Disney series so much.

I loved the original video that was done! It was very good. I love this one, too. I find the argument that Lumity is boring and such so annoying. I have always been annoyed by manufactured relationship drama so unnecessarily shoved in. I prefer it when a couple deals with outside forces together as a unit, something Luz and Amity do so well and so maturely, especially at such a young age.
I’m quite sad that with TOH over, it seems like we can surely say that the era of creator controlled, continuity-having, character & story driven cartoons from the 2010’s era that began with Adventure Time is at an end. Disney’s looking at primarily non serialized shows going forward for TV airing.
I’m hoping we still get shows with queer themes and queer creators/crew members like we have been, but it seems like time will tell.

i often try to be fair with certain shows that make a push but can only do so much as they know that the network's hammer can come down hard. That said, those that show boldness in the face of certain cancellation earn more of my respect. Live and let die as I always say.
Though in fairness for Miraculous, I've seen them recently make stride with a certain secondary character actually crush on the main titular character. While not endgame as the cool kids say, it's something that seems keen to explore from a pining sense.

I've loved all of these shows. i have a deep respect for rebecca sugar, ian jones quartey nate stevenson and dana terrace and all the other amazing people. lumity has been such a joy to watch and I've loved (mostly) getting to take part in this fandom. lumity, catradora and bubbline will always have a big place in my heart.

I grew up in the 90’s and I think most of us can agree that that decade was not known for being the nicest to the LGBTQIA+ community. One day when I was at work, I thought to myself, “I wonder if shows like The Owl House have made a difference for the younger generation?” Later on in the day, a group of teenage girls came into my work and two of them were holding hands and kissing. Looks like The Owl House has made a difference and it’s good to see the younger generation feel like they don’t have to hide or be ashamed of who they are.

There's also the fact that overseas dubs tend to undercut (or outright omit) the Lumity relationship (which likely means ending _The Owl House_ before the ship fully takes off or taking the more overt romantic moments between them out of the series entirely if they decide to continue running it), such as the Taiwanese dub changing the asking out scene from "Knock, Knock, Knocking On Hooty's Door" from "will you go out with me" to "let's dress up & travel together".

Im prefacing this with the fact that The Owl House is one of my favorite shows of all time. As you said, “The show is VERY gay”. That’s part of its charm! Even said the first episode “us weirdos have to stick together” and while being LGBTQ+ doesn’t make you a weirdo, it’s a theme that is heavily shown!
There is so much representation in the show and a lot of it can be easily missed too! Like how Raine and Masha are non-binary!
While I don’t think there is a trans character, the story is taking place in a realm with magic, so switching genders is probably pretty easy and wouldn’t even be something to mention.
I also need to give props for how well they showed mental health and trauma. The panic attacks that both Hunter and Gus experience are pretty realistic (ofc shortened for pacing sake), Luz’s suicidal thoughts, basically EVERYONES immense trauma. Vee being experimented on, Amity’s parents, Hunters brainwashing, Willows and Gus’s bullying and breakdown, I’m not even going to get started on Luz, and even Luz’s mom has some trauma from being bullied in school!
ALSO as someone who lives in CT and in a town that seems to be a similar size as the one shown, I can say for sure that the general acceptance of LGBTQ+ here is shown very accurately. I mean the acceptance here is to the point that they wouldn’t even need to cover their ears, they could just say that it’s genetic and they are all from the same region, most people wouldn’t even care enough to question it.
Basically this is one of my favorite shows of all time!
(And while meaningless I’m also going to mention that I’m a straight white male teen, though I am Jewish so ig I’m kinda apart of A minority)

I've been sitting on the fence for a long while now about making a full retrospective on The Owl House as a series, because as much as I love parts of it, it's also...a mess. A beautiful mess. It is riddled with flaws that go beyond what can just be blamed on the premature cut.
But ultimately, I just don't see the point of making a video like that. I generally don't like to make hate content or put out negative energy into the world, and I've yet to figure out what the ideal way would be to make a video criticizing aspects of The Owl House while also making it clear how much respect I have for the people who made it, and how much skill and passion went into the show in general.

Even though the series has ended we can all agree that the franchise is not over and we will see them again because there are so many questions that need answering. For that stance because we can for sure see in the future as a comic book series maybe a few shorts I spin-off series and a movie. Yet I think the creator of the series did say that she wants to do that. This is not the end of the franchise it is only the beginning. That said... with how Lumity was allowed to exist... I am desperately hoping that fem characters in media can FINALLY be allowed to do... "things" *without* being slapped by the strict gender roles. Like, people telling me "They're allowed to do x!", yeah... no. The male character did that *openly*, on screen for 15 seconds... the female was shuffled into the background of a scene for 2 seconds. (And intentionally using those terms, as this somehow also applies to robots and non-intelligent animals. Like, a male dog CAN do it. But a female cannot.)

@@CurmudgeonMedia Oh, definitely. I can say: Kipo DID have a strong start. Then kinda... sorta failed? Like: They made it a clear canonical part, that Kipo is "hormonal". But after the honestly good "asking a boy out" scene... Kipo has "served her purpose" and just, turns effectively asexual for the rest of the series. While the relationship in that series is okay. It does a lot of weird choices... including the magic clothes. *But*: I am talking in general. Like: Teen males can be however selfish and "hormonal" they want. Yet, the females are celibate nuns until they turn 21 and reach puberty. Males can have full frontal scenes, because "haha, funny!". Yet, females cannot. (Even Ruby Gillman has magic clothes...) At best: They have to be embarrassed/humiliated or shamed if something similar happen. OR: They have to wear bedsheets. And, often: Are "punished" for this. And like, in terms of biology: We have gone from never being allowed to talk about it, to "Ew, gross!" jokes. To recent examples in Baymax and Molly that "Yay, sunshine and rainbows! U ar waman nao!"... Not to mention: They still put bikinis on toddlers... that just makes it worse... And, like: On the "adult" side of animation: They're not even allowed to make jokes that are "too crass". They can show and talk about pingu all day. But at most, can have one clinical vagloober joke per season... Games aren't doing better either. Cyberpunk only allowed male char customization, because females were deemed "too obscene". I know it's a bit side tangent. But, when I look back at the 2000's WITCH comics... We have kinda regressed back to "Those are sinful emotions for girls!".

@@Kattlarv again, I totally agree, but I would still like to see more MLM queerness in media like this. It's practically non-existent. Kipo had some, but it wasn't terribly well-explored.

@@CurmudgeonMedia Yeah, I'd love to see more. To what I've noticed, FLF is generally more "accepted", as many of the bigöts don't see it as "real". So, in corporate terms: It's easier to "get away with". (I mean, to throw some shade at the fandoms: ALL of the FLF couples have large parts of the fandoms that goes "Okay, so: WHO becomes the male?" as, apparently: The goal of ALL couples is to have kids. So: WHO turns into the male? And this has just... become normalized in all fandoms from SU to SPoP... it certainly doesn't help that there's canonical events of this in things like X-men and Invincible.) There is some decent background stuff with it. But any "main" attempts have failed pretty hard, as they have tried to shoehorn it. *Cough*Disney*Cough* Lumity worked as it was integrated into the story naturally... even with the retcons. Honestly, looking at the lineup of shows coming out (pun intended) the chance for a fem character to be allowed to "be hormonal" or a MLM couple is more and more becoming a "... Maybe next decade." each time I look.

To me, it still has quite a few issues. Like, the sorta notable "shift" that it seems like Luz was gonna be with Willow, and the missing parts from season 2+the rewrites makes several things a lot clunky. But, even with all of that: It IS a really solid pairing. Which, honestly says a lot when a swis cheese ship holds more water than the generic status quo ones.

The further we get from the ending of The Owl House, the more trouble I have defending its writing choices. There are a lot of issues that can be chalked up to the cut, but there are also a lot of choices that just...can't. Certain writing choices that really, really baffle me in terms of what was given priority over what. For example--for a show which places so much thematic emphasis on motherhood (surrogate or otherwise), we didn't ONCE get a SINGLE conversation between Eda and Camila? Am I the only one who feels like it should have been important to see Luz's two moms actually TALK to each other or interact in some meaningful way? All they get is some brief, wordless clips in the end montage, and yet--Boscha gets a mini arc, and Kikimora returns for...some reason. Why Boscha got a moment in season 3 but Eda & Camila never did, I truly don't know.
That's just one example, though, the point being that I've grown to have a lot of issues with The Owl House and I consider doing a video about it, from the perspective of a fan of the show.

@@CurmudgeonMedia Yeah, there's a lot of weird choices on what they included in S3. Yes, it was way too short. But there was a lot of... "Rermember this guy?"while leaving out a lot of, like you said: Kinda big deals. I mean: V never picked a name. But S1 to S2: There's a clear sorta.. retconning going on with Amity. I can't say for what reason. But, they clearly swapped her around, so to speak.

@@Kattlarv I think retconning is a strong word, and I'm sort of...divided about it. I think that Amity shedding aspects of her personality is to be expected, and it's just part of a character arc. However, it does feel like Amity was largely neutered, and with the exception of some minor course-correction in late season 2, it really feels like she became *just* Luz's awesome girlfriend.

@@CurmudgeonMedia Not sure what else to call it. But as said: There was an entire thing going on with Willow. And Amity kinda... has a reboot, is put on the shelf for half the season, then pops back, fresh out of the closet. It VERY much feels like 404, missing content. I have no clue *what* was supposed to happen or to which characters. But fairly certain it was to involve Willow, Gus, Luz and Amity. No clue if Amity actually took Willow's place. If there was some "Oh wait, THIS is much better!" or whatever. But *something* went down there.

I hate that, in Avatar and the Last Airbender, Aang and Katara become a couple even though they are only 12 or 13 years old. It is so unrealistic and could confuse younger audiences and create a false reality about relationships at a young age.
This comment is so late after this video is published and I recond no one will even see it, but I felt that I had to say this.
    Edit:
Also, I completely agree with what Tom is saying, it is so important that upcoming shows include LGBTQ+ characters so that it hopefully becomes something that people treat normally, which obviously, is how it should be treated.

Lumity is a great symbol and step forward for representation in animation, but a terrible ship in my opinion.
Amity starts dating the main character and BAM! She's suddenly an almost completely different person. Worse, she feels too much the same as the collective protagonists. All the traits that defined her just kind of evaporate to give us a very neat, clean and above all boring relationship with Luz. All their drama being so incredibly minor and so predictable in their resolution, that it's not exciting at all.
I feel like their relationship could have been far more interesting if Amity didn't just suddenly stop being the arrogant, elitist bully that she started out as. Don't have her character just suddenly shift, but rather have her channel her traits into wholesome things. Have her elitism instead become ambition. Make her the driving force behind the team, pushing them to their limit. Have her bullying become the instincts of a protector.
Have Luz actually grapple with the fact that she has romantic feelings for someone who is, essentially, a bad person.
As is, it feels like a Doppelganger just suddenly replaced Amity so that the relationship could be squeaky clean.
