Absolutely epic bit of footage for sure i noticed the spot on his emboli immediately and was like talking to the tablet like what the hell is that and of course i assume it was fluid but that makes a ton of sense i have to agree with u on that for sure i must say seeing them drum on the video ABSOLUTELY doesn't give it justice till u see it in person! I always very gently use my paint brush to very carefully rub their front pair of lelgs to say hi and let my presence be known so not to get a bolt and yesterday for the first time ever my gbb female apparently liked when i rubbed her leg so much she thought i was trying to rizz her up and started drumming at me i burst out laughing so hard it was absolutely the cutest thing ever and its so true that if we as keepers use the same taticts that they use with one another to communicate then we get better results and im soooo glad that i found ur videos before ever getting my first tarantulas bec it enabled me to have interactions with them that are just awesome i dont particularly want to handle my spiders in the way some people do i dont mind if they choose to come on me but id probably never intentionally pull one out to hold like i would say my bearded dragons and its super cool to be able to somewhat communicate with the tarantulas in that way obviously we or i have no idea what they are saying but the drumming is a true and tride statement from them and it was super cute lol and she was so sweet about ut

Amazing shots of the embolus afterwards, usually they retract it quite quick which makes is difficult to spot but he just let it hang out there for all to see 👀. Very interesting on the theory of it having signs of the females epigastric furrow lining on the tip. Amazing footage as always guys, much respect to you both 👏👍

Dear Mr. BEASTIE I start off every Monday morning with you and the kind camera lady. Nothing like starting your new day with spider sex. Living in Kansas I often think about cat sex. I live in the country with lots of barn cats
It is very painful for the queen because of the way the male is designed. Won't go into graphic detail but perhaps there is something similar on the embolie? So nice to start my day with you as long as you keep the spiders on your side of the pond. Great show.
    Peace, Annie in Kansas.😊

That was amazing! I always thought it was "pain" or whatever a Tarantula feels that is like pain to them. Because the way they jerk down, it's like an automatic reaction, not a food reaction. I sent my Aphonopelma iodius (a Nevada tarantula, that lived in Reno, NV) MM to a breeder in Houston. Their first pairing didn't look super great, but there was that shock and auto reaction we saw here, without the flesh of course. Luckily my male was able to get away, and the breeder's female hasn't been receptive since, so, I think that reaction was a positive sign that the first pairing took. I hope so at least. I don't want half the sac, just like 3 or so slings. I don't need half a sac of A iodius, lol. Anyway, what an amazing video. Thanks Dave!
PS: at the beginning when we saw a portion of your hand, I thought it was because you had a paint brush ready to separate them, then you said you were just getting a photo. Lol. 😂
PSS: do you plan on coming out with more calendars? I know it's Feb, but I would still buy one. I tried to get in touch on FB Messenger, but I was too late, you'd already sold out.

WOW! I'm going to agree with your theory Dave, because in many cases it does look painful to the females. A smooth operator may well live to see another day. And Insect Politics, she may react with instinctual defence. Also, because they do cannibalize regularly- you can imagine that mating comes with risk anyway. But as you have shown here- there may well be a trigger response. Kudos on this footage Dave. Peace.

Hello Dave and Camera Lady!😊. It is so lovely to see you. ❤️ What a fascinating video! I have a few thoughts on this. 🧐🤨 Bear with me, I will try to be coherent. There are other species that do not have the most comfortable of copulation regimes. Cats have a pretty uncomfortable breeding 🙀and dogs 🐩 as well to an extent. It does seem that the discomfort usually falls on the female. 😉And yet the drive to breed over comes all else. Interesting that. I wonder, with the spiders, if it is a combination of things. You have spoken of the kinds of tarantulas that have gentle pairings and than those that are more abrupt. Is there a difference in the mortality of the males with the different kinds of pairing? Does that make sense? I would think that the higher mortality might come from a more friendly pairing process. They could also need the nutrients as we have seen how much having babies can take out of a female. Just some general ideas. I think you may be on to something there Dave.
It sounds like you may be coming down with something. Please take care of yourselves. There are some wicked bugs out there right now. 😷🤧I am finally better but I still can’t talk!🥺 I think my husband would celebrate that’s but he can’t talk either!🤣🤣 I am off for the night. Thank you again for the food for thought. See y’all soon! 🤠😴

I have a theory on the pairing behaviors:
The males in every breed have varying levels of brevity at introduction, but they all seem to understand that they need to be ready to get the heck out of Dodge, incase the female is more in the mood for lunch, than pairing.
The imboli, when extended, appear like miniature fangs, or hooks. While it is the nature of tarantula reproduction, that can't feel good for the female.
However, I think for the males, once they get to insertion, part of the reason they bend the female in half is because they are literally hooked into her, and they know they're caught and already trying to get away. While doing so, probably causes the potential tearing of the epigastric furrough of the female, and understandably, in most cases, causes her to attack.
...though, there was that video of yours, Dave, where the male was able to pair something like 6 or 8 times in a row, and the female just kept on with it.
For the theory that males getting eaten as a final meal for the female, in preparation for creating an egg sack and sealing themselves away during that process, I used to think was total bunk. But now I'm not so sure. There really may be something to that within some of the tarantula species.

I like your ideas, Dave! Though I don't think it is completely as you say. Her need for the male diminishes after pairing, sort of how men can just roll over and sleep immediately after the act whereas girls want to cuddle. Yes, pain is going to be a factor, especially for the more temperamental species- but the chilobrachys work against your theory as they directly invite the male towards the burrow. There absolutely has to be some truth to the idea that a nutrition, a little extra snack is good- and it makes sense, because in some mammalian care there is some foraging that goes on whilst a parent stays behind. This has to be some way the spiders have worked out how to keep a pair without, well... together.
What I'm interested in hearing from you specifically (and as the specialist you are) is about the trance like state that these spiders get into. How strong is it? Could you pet the spider during it without a response (I'm not saying do that, but even a brush)? Perhaps a skill male can avoid imminent defeat by outwitting a female or bringing her to this kind of state where she is stunned, perhaps that works for people, too. I distinctly remember one of your arboreal getting munched, your female, by a male- there's so much more going on here than meets the eye.
What I can say is this, man, I'm glad I'm not a spider. Used to be so scared of them, but once you understand just how weak and squishy they are, and how vulnerable they are to the elements, birds, other spiders, ants et cetera. Those fangs don't look so strong when you take into account they have to reload and each bite is a judgement call. Cheers Dave.

    • @daveslittlebeasties
      @daveslittlebeasties  6 месяцев назад

They are very sensitive when in that trance state, we have a very high survival rate for our males around 97 % only the males that died did the female have a sharp insimination ?all the gental pairings they walk away 👍

Hey Dave, here's my take on why females sometimes react pissed and times not: some years ago I read on a random facts page that male mites would just sting through the females' body approximately where the sperm belongs even though the females would have the according furrow, the males just wouldn't care. Since they also are arachnids that might apply on tarantulas as well. Look at the sharp bulbs of Chilobrachys species and consider how many times pairing doesn't end well for the males yet the females are fertilised. Maybe sometimes they "hit" it the right way and the females end in that "trance" state making an escape possible, maybe sometimes they don't yet sperm gets to where it belongs and the girls get angry.

The grumpy females at this stage of pairing reminds me of female cats in the same position I think its domestic cats and wild cats never seems to be a pleasant process but babies are made and it happens again. Nature is a strange mistress 😊

With cats, it's because the male has barbs on his male parts...I'd squeal also...
