  • Anthony Fantano thought that the Hotelier's sophomore album, "Home, Like NoPlace Is There", was only above average. This was OBVIOUSLY a personal ATTACK on me and an ATTACK on the emo community as a whole, so I had to provide an alternate take on this record.

Great video. I saw them live last night playing the entire album front to back, and have a newfound respect for the album. I always liked it, especially the first track and Your Deep Rest (I also never realized the pun LOL) but it never really grabbed me throughout the entire album. I admit I only really knew the words and melodies for the first few tracks. But after listening through the whole thing live and feeling the energy, the sadness, the pain and grief, that everyone in the crowd shared with the band, just wow, holy shit.
I also appreciated that you didn't go out of your way to criticize Fantano for his opinions. What a lot of people don't ever really seem to think is that the dude is listening to new music non-stop. While us regular music listeners might have had the opportunity to latch onto an album like this and really appreciate it with a million listens, Fantano does have to post a review after a few listens with his initial thoughts. That does sometimes result in reviews which might seem "unfair", but that's just his opinion.
Another thing to note is that 6/10 is a good review. Based on his thoughts I would have expected a 7 but a 6 is still "good". People get the idea in their head that his rating system is like school grades and that anything under an A or a B are "bad"

Had no idea Fantano did a review of this album. What a completely lackluster take on a epic masterpiece. I always try to be understanding and realize not everybody likes sappy emo music. But I at least respect people who take the time to understand the themes and can appreciate the message. I at least respect him for giving it a few listens before making his final judgment, that being said. And I'm sure it's lead to people giving it a listen and probably made a few new fans despite his thoughts on it. Great video dude!

It's always exciting for me when Fantano reviews an album from this scene but that excitement is usually dashed by his lack of enthusiasm for them. He's obviously not impressed with the current state of the genre but at least he takes the time to review them at all, he could just as easily ignore it entirely.

    • @ItsAlwaysRainingInWa
      @ItsAlwaysRainingInWa Год назад +2

TL;DR I would rate it a strong seven for it's creative and unique production. The sonic landscape created in post production really lets the poignant raw vocals and simple yet crashing melodies shine.
Oof, I'll try to be as succinct as possible as I could rant for hours on the topic haha.
First off, it is a poetically touching album. I will say that if you want straight to the point lyrics with clear meanings then it may be hard to connect to, or identify with the album. Though I feel as if that is what makes it so special.
There is a wonderfully crafted poignant depth to Goodness that shows itself in everything from the raw passionate vocals, where it seems like the lead singer is never satisfied doing anything lackluster, to the sonic landscape created in post production that should not be understated when speaking of this album.
Whether it be singing with huge deep breathes at the top of their lungs, or quietly speaking poetry, the lead singer does so with such much conviction and emotion.
On nearly all tracks the guitar tone is smooth as butter, and is made of simple yet powerful melodies that know exactly when to shine and when to simply blend in.
Some of my favorite moments on the album are the ones not created by the instruments alone.
About fifty seconds into the song Piano Player, the track gets quieter and a lo fi filter is applied. This lasts for about a minute, until the filter lifts and as the drums kick in at full volume the vocals come back, but this time clear as day in a powerful emotive way.
The background noise captured on track four from being recorded outside is incredibly beautiful, and continues on in the other similarly titled interludes.
The simple composition on Two Deliverances is contrasted by its problem wrought, if somewhat abstract lyrics, which is another fun trend I feel continues throughout the album.
Settle the Scar has a part after the second chorus where the music drops to just a lead electric guitar and vocals. All of the sudden the drums come in, and forgive me for not knowing the effect used, but the song sounds like it's repeating over itself rapidly for a measure or two. This goes on for a couple bars, and then the song drops again, but this time with an acoustic guitar and drums that then builds up to one of the most explosive endings to a song on the album.
Overall, I would say that the production alone makes the album deserving of a 7 at least, if only for it's uniqueness and creativity being executed so well. The lyrics being vague and overall composition being somewhat run of the mill, would be my harshest criticisms from an objective stand point. I personally have done some real deep soul searching while listening to this album due to how I interpreted the lyrics, but I can see them being take as convoluted and vague also. It sounds very emo, and extremely angsty, but then again I love that type of music 😆
To me, it is slightly more powerful then Home, strictly because I am at a point where in my life where I am trying to truly appreciate the simple beautiful things in life. The goodness. Home is amazing, but it’s very personal for me and is difficult to listen to depending on my psyche and my environment. Not everyone wants to see a grown man crying while he is eating lunch in the break room at work. In a way it’s too good. Like driving a 1000 hp drag race car to go get groceries. I don’t always want to feel that much 😂
I also HIGHLY recommend listening to the album Goodness on a set of real hifi headphones or speakers, in order to fully appreciate the production quality and sonic touches I mentioned throughout my review.

I agree that the entire album is a masterpiece. I once thought that I had completely figured out the narrative, assuming the album was a continuous storyline. I got the chance to speak to Christian about my interpretation. He thought it was interesting, but I was way off the mark. Much like The Wonder Years’ “The Greatest Generation,” it impossible to listen to the album without feeling deep emotions every time.

Man I love this album. I appreciate Anthony's videos, however I don't idolize him and treat opposing opinions as personal attacks (I'm not implying that's you haha). Upon first hearing Home Like NoPlace... at age 16, I thought it was good, but i didn't immediately identify with it as much as the clean arpeggios and apathetic vocals of bands like American Football. Your changing relationship with the album, described in the introduction, really holds true for me as well. As loss, grief, despair, and mourning have become constant ailments, and my self-perception and understanding of the world have greatly shifted, HLNPTI has proven to be one of the most poignant, emotionally-devastating, omnipresent pieces of music I've heard. I've explored endless corners and extremes of recorded music, yet nothing comes across as bland about this album in comparison. It feels meticulously crafted, and, particularly benefitted by the impassioned vocals and masterful lyricism, has formed a unique identity, in my mind at least. It refracts pensive poetry through urgent, bleeding delivery so effectually. After experiencing hundreds of albums within the genre, there is, no doubt, equally thoughtful, high-caliber music, yet nothing directly parallels the way Home Like manifests its themes. In fact, there are plenty of albums in existence that I love just as much, or more in separate ways; I just don't think any evoke this shade of grief so severely. Its a real gut-punch, to the degree that it can be a painful, if cathartic listen.
Misc/specific thoughts - being a massive screamo zealot (and having less conventional feelings about gender conformity, ha), Life in Drag is one of my favorite tracks. I actually love the way it hits its stride after the somber fade of Among the Wildflowers.
Also, I haven't looked for much feedback on the album, so I was surprised Housebroken is seen as a least-fav. The story it tells feels unique and the imagery palpable.
Unrelated, I plan to check out Arm's Length at your recommendation.
I'm not sure if you're into the more aggressive/sonically extreme side of emo, but if you're ever looking for something outside the usual, I greatly recommend checking out Death of Spring by For Your Health/Shin Guard and Last by Ostraca. Both albums have surely impacted me as deeply as this one, granted not in identical ways.

I wish more people would talk about Circa Survives first album "Juturna", I know it isn't necessarily an "emo" album, it takes a lot of elements, more along the lines of progressive post hardcore, but it genuinely is my favorite album ever, one that hits me in the same ways you say this album hits you, well, I guess lyrically Juturna makes me feel this hypnotic emotional and moral gray of emotion, something that doesn't feel necessarily sad, but it also feels so melancholic, almost as if I'm being sung this whirlwind of confusion and sadness, but a want to be stable and ok, it gives me the same feeling of how I viewed poetry as a child, I couldn't understand it but something felt meaningful, but with Juturna it's like the music and harmony is the emotion, and the lyrics are just this unreliable narrator, that's comforting you along the way, the album means so much to me, and people acknowledge its influence, but nobody really says anything about it, and idk if its just me that thinks of it so highly

I don't blame anyone for not liking this album, it's a somewhat niche target audience, but calling it bland is as objectively untrue as an opinion can be. Even if it's not your thing, I don't understand how you could call such a dynamic record boring by any stretch.
