The Volkswagen Type 2, known officially (depending on body type) as the Transporter, Kombi or Microbus, or, informally, as the Bus (US), Camper (UK) or Bulli (Germany), is a forward control light commercial vehicle introduced in 1950 by the German automaker Volkswagen as its second car model. Following - and initially deriving from - Volkswagen's first model, the Type 1 (Beetle), it was given the factory designation Type 2.[2]
As one of the forerunners of the modern cargo and passenger vans, the Type 2 gave rise to forward control competitors in the United States in the 1960s, including the Ford Econoline, the Dodge A100, and the Chevrolet Corvair 95 Corvan, the latter adapting the rear-engine configuration of the Corvair car in the same manner in which the VW Type 2 adapted the Type 1 layout.
European competition included the 1947-1981 Citroën H Van, the 1959-1980 Renault Estafette (both FF layout), and the 1953-1965 FR layout Ford Transit.
Japanese manufacturers also introduced similar vehicles, such as the Nissan Caravan, Toyota LiteAce and Subaru Sambar.
Like the Beetle, the van has received numerous nicknames worldwide, including the "microbus", "minibus",[3] and, because of its popularity during the counterculture movement of the 1960s, "Hippie van/bus".
Brazil contained the last factory in the world that produced the T2 series of Type 2, which ceased production on 31 December 2013, due to the introduction of more stringent safety regulations in the country.[4] This (after the 2002 termination of its T3 successor in South Africa) marked the end of the era of rear-engine Volkswagens, which originated in 1935 with their Type 1 prototypes.
The Type 2 was available as a:
Panel van, a delivery van without side windows or rear seats.
Double-door Panel Van, a delivery van without side windows or rear seats and cargo doors on both sides.
High Roof Panel Van (German: Hochdach), a delivery van with raised roof.
Kombi, from German: Kombinationskraftwagen (combination motor vehicle), with side windows and removable rear seats, both a passenger and a cargo vehicle combined.
Bus, also called a Volkswagen Caravelle, a van with more comfortable interior reminiscent of passenger cars since the third generation.
Lotação (share taxi), a version exclusive to Brazil, with 6 front-hinged doors for the passenger area and 4 bench-seats, catering to the supplemental public transport segment.[citation needed] Available from 1960 to 1989, in both the split-window and "clipper" (fitted with the bay-window front panel) bodystyles.
Samba-Bus, a van with skylight windows and cloth sunroof, first generation only, also known as a Deluxe Microbus. They were marketed for touring the Alps.[12]
Flatbed pickup truck, or Single Cab, also available with wider load bed.
Crew cab pick-up, a flatbed truck with extended cab and two rows of seats, also called a Doka, from German: Doppelkabine.
Westfalia camping van, "Westy", with Westfalia roof and interior. Included optional "pop up" top.
Adventurewagen camping van, with high roof and camping units from Adventurewagen.
Semi-camping van that can also still be used as a passenger car and transporter, sacrificing some camping comforts. "Multivan" or "Weekender", available from the third generation on.
Apart from these factory variants, there were a multitude of third-party conversions available, some of which were offered through Volkswagen dealers. They included, but were not limited to, refrigerated vans, hearses, ambulances, police vans, fire engines and ladder trucks, and camping van conversions by companies other than Westfalia. There were even 30 Klv 20 rail-going draisines built for Deutsche Bundesbahn in 1955.[13]
In South Africa, it is known as a well-loved variation of the ice cream van (first, second and third generations).
I spent many years as a VW Van and Westy mechanic. I will say - you NAILED this one. Detailed as if YOU lived in one. Thanks for sharing!
Revell didn't quite nail it though: no side reflectors. Not even a decal that I could see on the sheet. I'm more a Dormobile guy myself, but I'll build any bus kit.
Wow, thanks!
Another excellent build by what I call a master teacher
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
Holy crap, this is outstanding! Excellent engineering, fit and finish from Revell of Germany! Your presentation is spot on Chris, well done!!
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
That looks amazing and you did another nice review and build. Thank you.
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
Wow a lot going on with this kit! Beautifully done! I can tell you enjoyed building it!
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
Very cool. It's hard to believe it's a snap kit.
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
I once drove through Australia on a hippie trail in fried out kombi. I don't remember much, just being nervous around a strange lady because I was high on zombie. She was nice and made me breakfast.
Shouldn't you be at work?
But at least you scored a VegeMite sandwich out of the deal.
I have never put together a VW. But now I will build this one. Thanks for the video. A great build Chris. Keep up the great work.👍👍👍👍👍.
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
Would love to have this camper to travel around in for vacations. Great job on the build, looks so nice.
Thank you!
I really enjoyed this video of the vw bud camper …
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
I enjoy watching your channel. I like the way you keep builds simple...no fancy air brushing or filling, sanding... nothing wrong with that. This kit is a great kit, lots of details. Snap kit I built was the 60s batmobile that also had nice details. Have a great weekend.
Glad you like them!
That looks great Chris he really improved mounting systems so you really don't have to use any glue on this the next thing is let's go camping👍👍
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
I Love your skills💖💖
Thanks!
And another Vantastic kit build!! I love when you can just clear coat a model when it is molded in color and not have to apply paint first. Usually there are swirls in the plastic that make that impossible.
I learned how to drive in one of those. It had a Porsche motor.
And remember the shifter? Used to drive my Father's.
I'm so thankful for your channel! I've learned a lot and jumped back into modeling. Your channel is a valuable toolbox of "how to's". I haven't built models since I was a kid and I'm having a blast. Many tricks as a kid I always wondered about. You opened up a whole new world for me!
If I can find it I'll purchase it because my late sister used to have a 74 Camp mobile in a yellow, she loved that & traveled all over including Banff
As shown in the video and linked in description, Modelroundup.com has it in stock.
This kit is sweet
Love it! Those Revell germany Kits are amazing
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
That is an amazing beautiful, and crazy cool build my friend 👍👌😎😊
Glad you like it!
So sweet!
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
This kit is sitting on my shelf, staring at me to build it. Thanks for the video on this build, fantastic as always.
Really nice kit! Amazing snap fit. And as usual, your skills are brilliant Chris! Thanks ✌🏻
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
love these videos. especially that friendly wisconsin voice!
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
T2 camper
Missed opportunity as a Terminator cross promotion since Austria and Germany are so close lol
LOL
"I'll be camping"
this kit is very close to my heart because i own the full scale version 69 westfalia camper van thanks for featuring this kit very cool
I Love That It Is NICE
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
Great job Chris. Your VW T2 came out very nice.
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
Excellent instructions!
I like the non camper roof.
The only thing that would've made the video even better,is the music that would've been playing at Woodstock;Jimmy Hendrix and Peter Frampton comes to mind. This 1/24 scale VW T2 camper bus van would be perfect for a Woodstock diorama placing this VW camper van at Woodstock in the summer of 1969.
Thanks for watching!
It looks exactly like the lego technic bus van
Another awesome build! This is the exact van my band used to tour in.
Chris stop making me wanna buy kits I wouldn’t normally wanna buy!! Hahaha!! I love the interior detail.
LOL, that's what I do!
Looks real outstanding
Thank you!
Always enjoy your projects. Thanks!
Glad you like them!
Looks amazing. You can tell that kit is high quality.
Beautiful job mate👍
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
I learn to drive that vw here in Australia back in 1987. But it was blue. It was German import, it had petrol heater in it. Winter here you get couple night of of 0°C . The windows on the sides are givevaway of a German model
I got mine by accident three weeks ago and my plan is to build the Egyptian terrorist bus that chases Marty and the DeLorean in a mini diorama. Can't wait to finish it.
Wouldn't it have been easier to get the non-camper version and save yourself having to remove all the camper parts from this kit? The bus in the movie was not the camper although it did have the sliding sunroof which would be easier to create using the regular body. The regular bus is Revell 07667 and depicts either a Type 225, 281, or 235 (microbus and kombi versions with a sliding righthand door). The terrorists were Libyan, btw.
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
Growing up my neighbors had a grasshopper green one just like the model
This is a good example of how several different shades of similar colors will add depth and interest to your build. Many times, I will paint engine parts with four or five
different shades of silver, gunmetal, aluminum, and chrome to give a look of separate parts. Everything painted one color, tends to look one dimensional. This is also
a good reason to use that black undercoat. Paint will always look nice with a light touch - you can always add more, but it is difficult to take some off !
Thanks Chris.great review and wow! What a build looks like a great kit.big fan of your channel.peace.
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
Very Cool 👌🏼
Oh man those sticker decals. I much rather prefer them. Definitely gonna pick a bus next shopping spree. As always, great video Chris.
Right on!
On my to get list to go with the T3 camper I’ve done , really nice build Chris
I had a teacher that drove a Volkswagen camper to school everyday
I do like kits that come with sticker decals moor than decals you put in water
I've been looking forward to a build of this kit ever since I heard it was coming out. Looks like I'm going to have to add this to my collection as well! It all came together very nicely and I love the color scheme out of the box; very period correct.
Hope you enjoy it!
Excellent work as always Chris, I have this one to do someday.
Go for it!
I want to own one of these camper buses in real life. One in good condition is going to be hard to come by. Want one so can go camping with my girlfriend
Saw a few in Iola this weekend, one nearly identical to this one in fact. The ones for sale were big bucks.
Even though this kit is snap together I think it's still best to use a bit of cement
I love those camper van kits. The interior details and overall realistic appearance is just great. Thanks for the in depth review. The result is fantastic. I have the other version and this I a must have . Keep up the great work! 🏕
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
Excellent well engineered kit from Revell Germany. I always like Revell Germany kits. They go together very nicely. You did an excellent job on the assembly/review of the kit. Keep up the good work. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
It looks great! My only disappointment is that I want to build the "Dharma Van" from Lost, and it looks like I'll have buy both this kit AND the other, non-camper version as well. The other kit has the hard top this one does not, whereas this one has the side windows with the three horizontal panes the other one doesn't have -- need both to model the van we saw on screen (as well as a 3D-printed Dharma Initiative logo to replace the VW badge on the front).
That came out sooo nice. Great job, man!
Thanks a bunch!
That's brilliant ~ thank you
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
Awesome kit Chris, thanks for sharing 😊😎
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
Wacky Races Turbo Terrific Model Kit is now available! Planning to do a video of the assembly?
Great job .wasn't a big fan of snap kits but this one is ausom .maybe I'll try one soon .keep up the good work!!!
These are very very nice. They are not the lower grade snap tites of 40 years ago.
Great job! 😊
Thank you! 😄
Beautiful engineering. I love the plaid upholstery -- imagine painting that without the decals!
Terrific job! Wouldn't it make the subject of a nice diorama?
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
A nice stream side dio would be pretty epic.
That's a nice cutting mat Chris 😀 did u have this made just for your self or are they going to be available for sale.
I was going to ask the same thing brother 😅😂 Great build as usual!
I had some made to cut down on how many times I need to watermark the video to stop people from stealing my images and footage. Was about $25 on Amazon and took a couple weeks to get in.
@@hpiguy Thanks Chris! (And Kevin for asking!)
🙏🇺🇸🇺🇦✌️
🔝🔝🔝🔝🔝🔝🔝🔝👏👏👏👏
Great build video. Got me motivated to get one. Unfortunately when I tried to order one from Model RoundUp, it came up as "Out of Stock". So I saw some on Ebay; however, after looking closely, the Revell VW Camper models there are slightly different. These don't have the hinged and tilted up roof; instead, they have a flat closed roof but a doghouse that sticks up above the roof line. Based on locations of a Seller, it seems that this one you built was for the European market and this "doghouse" type is for the North American market? Are you aware there are 2 very similar releases but not exactly the same? I'm more fond of the tilted roof as you have.
I really enjoy your channel, you make it look simple but your skill produces great results
Watching your detail brushwork I notice what looks like the same well used brush,
Ok dum question time..what kind of brush is it? It looks like camel hair but of a better
Quality, do you remember where you got it? Anyway, kutgw
Cheap craft store brushes, I think they are sable hair? I paid about 99 cents each for them many years ago, I have dozens of them.
Nice! I knew they were a natural hair, I find that sometimes synthetic brushes kind of push the paint around rather than laying it on
Thanks for the response, again great vids
How come your spray paints dry quickly? How long does it take to dry?
Builders need to have some patience ! Most sprays will be fully cured in about 24 hours. People get too anxious to pick-up and inspect after only a short time and
this is a good way to ruin an other wise very smooth paint job. A food dehydrator is a good way to speed up the curing time but allowing overnight drying is best.
Lego technic t2 has a sink
How long do you let primer dry on the body, and the smaller parts? I seen an instructional video you presented with some building tips , painting facts etc. but cant keep up with all your postings !
While growing up, like many viewers I have owned a bunch of the original first time release kits. I actually lived about a mile from the AMT studio building in E Detroit ( actually close to St. Clair Shores MIch.) and have driven past it even to this day thousands of times. . Girlfriends mom worked at MPC in Mt Clemens Mich on the model line. Not many know what the smell of a fresh shrink wrapped kit smells and feels like warm in the box! She would bring me home the latest runs right off the line. It was nice being one of the few who enjoyed receiving kits that had not even hit the shelf yet… I was very close to a lot of the model manufactures growing up. Jo Hann, was another I remember vividly. Was a very fun time in life when 4 or 5 friends would gather at ones kitchen table covered with newspaper to keep the 15 cent bottles of Testors brush paint from ruining moms antique table. The contest would end sometimes with the best body paint, or best clear glue free windshield install. Since sprays were often expensive we shared many Testors brush paints. FLAT BLACK ALWAYS seemed to be in high demand.
What a great time to be growing up. Memories that are still imbedded with my kit building today at 58 years old.
Thanks for the great videos Chris. I think you are passing something very solid down to our youngsters in these times. Models lead to real vehicles, car shows, learning restoration , and of course back to modeling!
Thanks, I go from wet primer to paint coats very fast. The primer flash dries in minutes and I set them in a food dehydrator at 110 degrees to speed it up.
@@hpiguy Thanks Chris, always luv your work. And thank you for repeating the tip, I know you did a complete video on your basic technique.
If you could post a link for that video I am sure your viewers would appreciate every minute., your the best ..bro, take care 👍 👍
LoL I thought it was a real camper
Could you just Dull coat the black, brown and grey parts to give them a painted look rather than paint them
I have done that, sometimes it looks ok and others it doesn't look near as good as a coat of paint. Depends on the plastic.
Bummer, already out of stock.
My parents had one just like that before I was born. And after I was born. Oh my gosh… I think I may have been conceived in that van! 😬
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
Can we buy your stuff friend? just asking? great video love it... thumb's up
So cool!
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
Great build! Congrats! I also like it without the spare tire on the front. It looks so much better with the VW logo on! I'm also a model car collector myself and I've built some kits when I was a teenager. My kits don't look as good as yours, though!
Two eras of buses down; Hasegawa and Revell's 1963-67 style bodies and now Revell's 1972-79 (sorta) versions. Someone needs to step up and release the barn door models, the 56-62's, and the 1968-71 early Bay windows. And we seriously need a doka splittie.
I would have never thought this was a snaptite style kit. Well done Chris!!🤘🏻🤘🏻
Incredible job on the T2 Camper Chris! That interior detailing is outstanding! Can't wait to get one!
Chris, once again you hit for the cycle on this build. Excellent job, I still can't believe that you don't have MORE subscribers.
I'll keep sharing your vids and I hope it helps. 🙏🏼
Thanks again!
Awesome job guy I worked for VW for many years always loved the campers that on you built looks just like the real thing very very well done.
Thanks 👍
Super fun build. Loved your extra touches to take the “toy” out really works.
Awesome! Thank you!
Looks awesome as always
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
👍👍🙂
Thanks!
That was an awesome video! Thank you :)
What is the paint brand in that blue box container ?
Revell paints
