Revell Germany 07667
The Volkswagen Type 2, known officially (depending on body type) as the Transporter, Kombi or Microbus, or, informally, as the Bus (US), Camper (UK) or Bulli (Germany), is a forward control light commercial vehicle introduced in 1950 by the German automaker Volkswagen as its second car model. Following - and initially deriving from - Volkswagen's first model, the Type 1 (Beetle), it was given the factory designation Type 2
As one of the forerunners of the modern cargo and passenger vans, the Type 2 gave rise to forward control competitors in the United States in the 1960s, including the Ford Econoline, the Dodge A100, and the Chevrolet Corvair 95 Corvan, the latter adapting the rear-engine configuration of the Corvair car in the same manner in which the VW Type 2 adapted the Type 1 layout.
European competition included the 1947-1981 Citroën H Van, the 1959-1980 Renault Estafette (both FF layout), and the 1953-1965 FR layout Ford Transit.
Japanese manufacturers also introduced similar vehicles, such as the Nissan Caravan, Toyota LiteAce and Subaru Sambar.
Like the Beetle, the van has received numerous nicknames worldwide, including the "microbus", "minibus",[3] and, because of its popularity during the counterculture movement of the 1960s, "Hippie van/bus".
Brazil contained the last factory in the world that produced the T2 series of Type 2, which ceased production on 31 December 2013, due to the introduction of more stringent safety regulations in the country.[4] This (after the 2002 termination of its T3 successor in South Africa) marked the end of the era of rear-engine Volkswagens, which originated in 1935 with their Type 1 prototypes.
The Type 2 was available as a:
Panel van, a delivery van without side windows or rear seats.
Double-door Panel Van, a delivery van without side windows or rear seats and cargo doors on both sides.
High Roof Panel Van (German: Hochdach), a delivery van with raised roof.
Kombi, from German: Kombinationskraftwagen (combination motor vehicle), with side windows and removable rear seats, both a passenger and a cargo vehicle combined.
Bus, also called a Volkswagen Caravelle, a van with more comfortable interior reminiscent of passenger cars since the third generation.
Lotação (share taxi), a version exclusive to Brazil, with 6 front-hinged doors for the passenger area and 4 bench-seats, catering to the supplemental public transport segment.[citation needed] Available from 1960 to 1989, in both the split-window and "clipper" (fitted with the bay-window front panel) bodystyles.
Samba-Bus, a van with skylight windows and cloth sunroof, first generation only, also known as a Deluxe Microbus. They were marketed for touring the Alps.[12]
Flatbed pickup truck, or Single Cab, also available with wider load bed.
Crew cab pick-up, a flatbed truck with extended cab and two rows of seats, also called a Doka, from German: Doppelkabine.
Westfalia camping van, "Westy", with Westfalia roof and interior. Included optional "pop up" top.
Adventurewagen camping van, with high roof and camping units from Adventurewagen.
Semi-camping van that can also still be used as a passenger car and transporter, sacrificing some camping comforts. "Multivan" or "Weekender", available from the third generation on.
Apart from these factory variants, there were a multitude of third-party conversions available, some of which were offered through Volkswagen dealers. They included, but were not limited to, refrigerated vans, hearses, ambulances, police vans, fire engines and ladder trucks, and camping van conversions by companies other than Westfalia. There were even 30 Klv 20 rail-going draisines built for Deutsche Bundesbahn in 1955.
Like the Beetle, from the beginning, the Type 2 earned many nicknames from its fans. Among the most popular at least in Germany, are VW-Bus and Bulli (or Bully) or Hippie-van or the bus. The Type 2 was meant to be officially named the Bully, but Heinrich Lanz, producer of the Lanz Bulldog farm tractor, intervened.
The official German-language model names Transporter and Kombi have also caught on as nicknames. Kombi is not only the name of the passenger variant but also the Australasian and Brazilian term for the whole Type 2 family, in much the same way that they are all called VW-Bus in Germany, even the pickup truck variations.
After the Army, in the early 70's I was a "Factory Trained" VW Mechanic at "Dealerships". These Bay Window busses were our maintenance mainstay. First Colorado then Washington - trivia - that panel below the dash was cardboard. They stayed OK in Colorado, but the rain in Washington tore them up. You've built a REAL WORLD masterpiece with your assembly, color choices and weathering. Looking so much better than box stock, you make these rigs look like the've just come off the roads. Thanks, Chris, for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Owned a 78. Will be building mine as a Grateful Dead concert survivor with California plates. A great build!!
Thanks for watching!
This build gave me flashbacks. The neighbor freind I grew up with had a big family, his dad bought this vehicle brand new in 1969 in the exact colors you chose. All threw your build I thought of when he brought it home, all the trips to town, ball games, and stuff we did growing up. They also got a tent camper and went on camping adventures so I was kinda disappointed seeing it get heavily weathered but hey like I heard someone say, it's a hobby, build your kits for you, and have fun.
Really awesome! Reminds me of the VW bus from the TV show "Lost".
Oh yeah!
Never clicked on a video so fast! I have waited for a review of this kit for so long!
Thanks for watching!
Definitely the new standard for model kits , snap and glue alike!
I think we'll see more and more kits being engineered so well that they simply do not need glue but have tons or detail and moving parts.
I've been impressed with all the newer Easy Click and press fit kits.
The VW Bus kit is always a fun build!! ☮☮☮☮☮☮☮
Thanks!
Model Building should be fun and you express this in your vid's- build's and your attitude. Keep up the great work.
That's the plan!
Built with Volkswagen precision
Nothing like German engineering nice transporter 👍👍👍
Hah for a minute I thought it was a Dharma van from lost but stinkys fish camp is even better! Great one 👍
Thanks!
Nice video. I'm in the UK and have a T2 Camper, so I'm waiting for the other version of this kit to come out. My full size version does have some rust, but I won't be replicating that on the model. Thanks for the stuff you release, always interesting.
Thanks for watching!
I really like the way you encourage your viewers to be creative themselves. Your discussion of the craft paint colors for weathering is a good example. I just bought the model as a result of this video (and because my Dad drove one of these when I was a kid). Nice work, Chris! Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Been waiting a very long time for this kit, I hope they make one slightly older (1968-72) version as I'd love to build a tribute of the 1971 T2 that Dad bought brand new.....and I remember that exciting day we picked it up! Funny, but ours was blue as well, And ironically, that van still survives, though it's in poor shape....and that's exactly how I'd like to build my version of it....weathered. Those are more fun to build than ones that look showroom fresh.
My self i am a military/tanks/uboats modeller but recently started to think about building VW bus!Kind of in apocalyptic/or Lost tv show themed.Awesome video mate and beautiful kit by any means 🙌🏻👏🏻💯
Since I cannot afford these kits (had I the money, I would buy groceries; and a computer with the capacity for huge documents, so I could return to my writing), I happily (well, wistfully) watch, enjoying vicariously. Thank you so much!
Again, I hear in your music track a guitar instrumental of Bananarama's "Cruel Summer".
If they have the twinkee from outer banks then I'm buying it as a model fr! 🔥🤣💯
The VW came up awesome. I love the weathering. Nice job.
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
Outstanding video and presentation
Great kit for diorama. Especially with doors rear hood able to open. Also great engine detail for a snap together. My Uncle had the orange and white version. I don't build as much as I use to .. have limited room, but I just might pick up this kit.
Thanks for watching!
Just got this kit,and been stuck on how to paint it.I used to love doing clean builds, but I've done the revell samba bus clean and used.Youve inspired me to do a used, rusty one.Your my favourite you tube builder.Great job as ever.
All the best from the UK
Ian
Thanks for watching!
Started watching these videos to learn how to weather a model my son got me for Christmas. It is a 65 Chevy stepside I want to make it looked like a well used work truck, still driven every day.
Now that I have started watching your videos I guess my new hobby is watching your videos lol. These are so relaxing to watch. By the way this one turned out great. Reminds me of the van from the Lost tv show.
Glad to help!
Hey Chris Shannon here this bus reminds me of the movie Laserblast its the one that picks up Billy to give him a ride and then he uses his gun and blows up a billboard thats advertising Star Wars How fun is that
Thanks for watching!
What an awesome kit. There are so many opportunities with this kit. Thanks for the great build video, and thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Great looking build my buddy was building a vw.bus before he passed he loved your channel
Thanks for watching!
Another really great build - you make the age and rusting appear so real. Thanks much.
Thank you very much!
Pretty awesome build, thanks for sharing 🤩😎
Thanks Chris, you gave out so many weathering tips and tricks if you watched closely. Ended up amazing as usual mate! Stay happy and healthy bud. 👍
Thanks for watching!
I don't care what anyone says about these types of snapkits. I just bought a 93 transam and 94 Lambo snapkits and they're identical the same version gluekits that I have with the exception of a fewer less pieces . They're still fun to put together!
They are always fun!
Love your videos. Really appreciate the great music. My wife and I are both professional musicians and we can really relate to the Blue Danube plus as a modeler and lover of early sci-fi I'm always taken back to the beautiful space station sequence in 2001: A Space Odyssey
Rock on! Thanks for watching!
Sure wish the 'Snap-Tite' kits I built in the '70's were THAT detailed! What a great video & review!!
You and me both!
I think that sometime during the run of the 1st gen T2, the VW emblem was changed to chromed plastic. I wish that they would have kitted a 1st gen T2, as I used to have a '72 Kombi Deluxe; the final year of the short run (4 yrs) of the 1st gen T2. I may get one of these anyway and try modding it to match my old bus. My bus was actually pretty similar to this one: All I'd need to do is relocate the front turn signals and fab up a bumper to accommodate them, and then add the step-board extensions to the bumper as well. Great build, Chris!
Thanks Robert!
great build
Ive got the camper version! Been on my self for AT LEAST a few months. I picked it up THE SECOND my local had it. Been waiting for inspiration.
I did an unboxing of the much more detailed Level 5 Camper VW months ago when it came out, they have another snap camper version of this kit coming and I'm really pumped to build that one up.
@@hpiguy i haven't tried any if the snap kits yet. But I LOVE all the Revell Germany stuff Ive built.
One word "WOW"
Thanks!
Amazing build Chris built the Revell T3 camper a couple of months ago then saw the easy click T2 camper and I’ve got to get one
Yeah, really looking forward to the easy click camper!
Yours came out so beautifully !! I expected to hear the purr of the engine.
2013 😥
Well that turned out cool
Thank you!
Well I would definitely have to get two of them just to do one up in OD Green with US Air Force on the side of the door we had those running around on base everywhere and the second one would have to be a California custom thanks for the review on this kit Chris looks awesome👍👍
Thanks for watching!
Cool build / kit........someone needs to produce a Vanagon T3 kit.
Thanks for watching!
Nice build never get tired of how you weather the models!
Thanks for watching!
Cool looking build. Rick 😎✌️
Thanks for watching!
This Build Absolutely "STINKS" To HIGH
HEAVEN Chris !!! 🤢🤢🤢LOL 😂😆😂.
It's Pure Genius Matching The Florida Plates w The Logo Buddy and The Rusting/Weathering Is Perfect !! I'm Seriously Thinking About Getting 1 Myself Now. Thanks For Sharing Your Love For The Hobby n Have a Blessed Wknd Sir.
Thanks for watching!
Great job on this! Really want this kit in both this standard model and the camper. Simple snap together assembly but the level of detail is excellent. Will complement my existing Hasegawa 23 window 1963 Microbus
Glad it was helpful!
Fantastic as always Chris! I can tell you really enjoyed this one.
Thanks for watching!
Quite superb work. 👌
You have a great channel.. But i dont see one car on here thats a true classic.. Avanti .. Please do an Avanti.. I used to work there and they are amazing cars
I watched you pretty close on this because I had a '74 Westphalia camper for awhile. I can't wait for the camper version either. Those had PLAID interiors!
Thanks for watching!
Excellent build! Love the weathering especially. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much!
Love vans
Thanks for watching!
My dream car.....
Thanks for watching!
This really turned out great. Typical Revell style to have those windshield wipers. I will probably wait for the camper version but perhaps both will end up on my shelf. If I do this version I will probably base mine off of Field of Dreams.
Good movie! Thanks for watching!
Not sure if you knew, but there is a Stinky’s Fish Camp in Dune Allen Beach on the Florida panhandle.
A custom touch I would do is add the extra round fog lamps on the front bumper cut a hole in the roof maybe find some to scale weapons like a soviet gun, bazzoka, and a "bomb" casing that is full of used pinball machine parts with a photo of the man that sold it.
Rock out, have fun with your build!
Nice 👌
Thanks for watching!
Finally a VW kit.....Thank you so much!
Thanks for watching!
Fantastic job brother it looks awesome. Thank you very much for sharing your builds and tips really appreciate it. KEEP EM COMING !!!! Everyone remember to SMILE it's a hobby and it's suppose to be FUN. Keep yourselves and love ones safe and healthy.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing this awesome kit Chris! Your detail and weathering are excellent! Can't wait to do this one, the camper and the Bug!!
Hope you enjoy it!
Awesome kit . Awesome build.
Great work as always.
Mike
Glad you like it!
For my part I prefer the own models to the rusty models but your result is very interesting. It's missing a detail, the tires are too round and the suspensions should be damaged to represent the dilapidated condition of the bus. It is not a critic, it's a remark 😉 Very good job again 👍
Thanks for watching!
@@hpiguy It's always a pleasure 😉
Very nice Chris 👌 👍 so enjoy your videos 📹 😊 please keep them coming 🙏 and here to help get your videos 📹 out to everyone 😀 😊
Awesome thank you!
Cool
Thanks for watching!
Just ordered this- then i will look out for the camper for the right price.
I guess a van version might be in the pipeline???? like they did with the Type 1
You really brought your weathering A game to this build Chris, outstanding presentation also!! 👏 !! Wonderful color choices!!
Thanks for watching!
Great weathering job on that I love it!
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video mate👍
Thanks for the visit!
I don't know why, but I am imagining a VW Volkswagen Van flying through space approaching a rotating space station. Must be the music 😀
LOL
Awesome build Chris! I'm pretty sure I just seen the real one going down the road the other day. Sure looked like it lol. This kit has the potential for a ton of possibilities! Thanks for sharing. Need to get at least three of them!
Thanks 👍
Great open box review. Great looking details the dash board turned out awesome. Awesome build. Have a good one buddy 👍👍👍👍👊👊👊
Thanks, you too!
A WI weathered rust bucket with Florida plates. LOL! Another fine build Chris! It looks like you were having some fun with this kit.
I figured all that swamp flat mud, beach sand and salt air would rot it out in the fish camp. :) Thanks for watching!
Awesome job! And fine looking kit. The glass is crystal clear. So you got the rust and crust tools out. Fun video.
Even beaters get the glass cleaned when they fill up. Or at least I did when I had a beater truck.
@@hpiguy 😂
Excellent “livery”! Amazing work, man! Congrats!
Thank you! Cheers!
Im doing a clearcoat for the first time on my '75 AMT AMC Gremlin, im using Rustoleum 2X Painters Touch clear, do i apply decals before or after the clearcoat? Thx love your videos!
I would do decals first, so you can seal them with the clear coat. And I have that same Gremlin sitting on a table nearby waiting for me to finish the VW Scirocco. Also have 12 1/35 Panzer IIIs waiting for me to do the weathering portion but that's a different channel topic.
Since you didnt specify if you actually painted your model or not i am gonna assume you were just gonna clearcoat the actual plastic. If u didnt paint it i would definitely spray some clear where u were planning to put the decals. Let it dry. Apply your decals. Let them dry. Then go over the whole thing with clear. The reason is this: Decals adhere a whole lot better to a painted surface than raw unpainted plastic. Usually decals eventually dry and crack off if just on plastic. However if you painted it then put your decals on as usual then clearcoat it. Some ppl just shoot the clear on a car body and use the color of the plastic as the color coat. Just make sure you have something between the decal and the plastic. Whether its paint or some clear. Good luck. 😊
I have no idea how the Rusto clears react to decals when sprayed over them. It's pretty strong so I never tried it.
I use Pledge Revive It floor polish to cover decals and it never reacts.
Watch my video on 'painting with cheap spray cans' and you'll see how I prefer to do my kits.
Thanks everyone, i have already painted it, no clear or decals yet, but i will do decals then clearcoat when i get home from my vacation!
Another great build! Keep on going!
Thanks for watching!
Awesome build, Chris! 😁 judging by tge tail lights it's definitely a late 70's, they look identical to the ones that the (real) '78 I had back in the 90's 🤔 I definitely have to have a few of these 😁✌
Thanks! 👍
My '72 was the final year of the 1st gen. T2 bus and it also had the new, larger tail lights. My front turn signals were still down low on the bumper, like the rest of the 1st gen busses ('68 to '72). Were your seat frames silver or black? Mine were black.
Gonna build the VW van from the tv series "lost"..yours looks similar..
Thanks for watching!
I need to do a Greatful Dead hippie van
Yeah!
Really nice. Almost perfect. Just need a dented hub cap! If you’ve ever owned a VW, you’ll know what I’m talking about.
Thanks for watching!
Great job and the weathering is phenomenal
Thanks for watching!
Great review and build mate cheers
Glad you enjoyed it!
I think I'm buying this one and turning it into the Libyans' van from Back to the Future. This has "Let's see if these bastards can do 90" written all over it! LOL
Great vid!
Haha, yes!
If only it was a '68-'71 body then I could build my first car. Maybe someone will consider a resin conversion set for the front and rear clips, bumpers, wheels/caps, and the engine. I will get this anyway as it is still a VW Type 2. I'm just partial to doghouse buses.
Thanks for watching!
i bought one recently lol
Omg kool
Thanks for watching!
Looks like a fantastic kit. It would be nice to have a single cab or a panel delivery version too 🤔
That would be cool!
Hey Chris,I saw you putting pledge floor gloss on your models, how long between coats, thanks
You can recoat at any time, but leave it alone once you brush it on to dry fully. If you keep putzing with it as it dries you'll mess it up.
I used spray paint one time and it melted the model and made a leathery surface to the plastic.
Damn you did a great job on this one.
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful as always Chris
Thanks for watching!
Another nice build.Thanks,
Thanks for watching!
At the begining of the vid, you've shown us you talk "adult" from Charlie Brown. Could you translate the adult speak in the episodes for us please? Been 'round 35 years now that I'm wondering what they say! lol
Really good kit. Engine's really nice for a "sandwitch engine". Only thing annoying with this type of engine (IMO) is when you wanna do an engine swap. They should do a pick-up version of this kit.
And another great build.
Thanks for watching man!
What can use to strip paint off my model because the paint has gone all cracked and lumpy I've used spray paint too
Awesome build Chris! Definitely will be getting this one.(will be my 4th classic VW kit that I bought this year)
Tom S.
Thanks for watching!
LoL
Am only in it
We had air though
Open windows air that is
Great looking kit and a spectacular paint job, thank you
Thanks for watching!
Another awesome build!
Is it just me, or are the photos nice and clear, but the video itself is kind of fuzzy?
Like the way you weather your models. I've always felt that these plastic kits need to show at least some wear to be realistic. Great job, Chris. Still waiting and drooling to see you build that Henry J, gonna get that one for sure.
Funny, I'm working on that J right now. Thanks!
what is that Tec Accucolor stuff ??? does it dry in its own ??
Hey new to the channel. Great stuff you do here. Any chance you can let us know where you get your paint stands ??
Modelroundup.com carries the Tamiya paint stands.
Beautiful job! But the glass is a little too shiny. Is there a way to whether the glass?
I applied some tile grout to dust it, but even when I owned a beater I cleaned the glass at every fill up. Because the truck was falling apart, but I still needed to see well.
You can apply dust and pigments to glass the same way as body parts.
@@hpiguy I gotcha. I really enjoy your videos. 👍
Great work Chris, love the weathering.
Thank you Gary!
