    I retired nearly 4 years ago at the age of 76. I draw $1,000 a month SS and my medicare supplement and drug card is nearly $300 a month so that leaves me $700 to live on. I have spent half my saving in the 4 years trying to keep up. I am debt free for 5 years now. All I owed was a car payment but I paid it off 5 years ago before I retired. I am making quilts now and trying to make extra money but it is not much. I know people that have to have help or expect to live off other people but I could not do that. I stock up on food when I retired and now just need a few things a week. I spend about $35.00 a week on food and other things I need. I raised my 3 children by myself when their father left home. I worked and supported them and made most of our clothes.

    I think maybe the title of this video should be changed from "How to live on $1000/month" to "How we lived on $1000/month in 1994." The details you provide might have been useful 27 years ago but they are not helpful to someone wanting to know how to live on $1000/month *now.* Maybe there is another point to this video that I missed. But for those of us unfamiliar with your channel, who are looking for tips on how to live on a low income now, that title is misleading.

      In today's world it would have to be a person renting a room for $600 max. Or they could be splitting a studio or one bedroom with someone. I'm in Connecticut so you usually need $900 to $1000 for rent. Only a few places offer $1000 or less though.

    • @daisyy99
      @daisyy99 Год назад +1

      Good point, but they said there was an exchange of work for part of the rent. When my daughter and husband, she is an accountant, he is a chef, were looking for employment, they took a job working for a business owner. They lived in an apartment above the garage for free. As a chef, he had late nights due to entertaining. And delicious leftovers. The business prospered because she was able to track profits and expenses closely. And yes, with savings they opened a restaurant. And every year they would bonus share the employees 10% of the profits.

    My husband and I grew up in the same town. One day he was talking about a book store in town that I had no memory of. He asked me "Where did you buy your books?" I told him we went to the library. He said they never went to the library. In the summer we walked to the library every week. We would spend hours using items in the children's section (puzzles, view masters, a lap harp, etc.) and then pick our books to check out and walk home. We loved going to the library. We didn't know that my parent's were saving money. We just knew we were having fun.
    I know that this doesn't work for where some people live but for those folks watching this who don't live in a remote area make sure you check out the local public library. The library in my town has all kinds of services available. In addition to the expected books and magazines they have video games, board games, and various other activities to entertain kids. You can check out museum passes, DVD's and they have a "library of things" from baby gear to kitchen items to gardening tools to crafting items that you can check out for 7 days. And don't rule out checking out your local library because it is small. Many libraries belong to a consortium where they can request a book or movie you want from another library in their consortium.

      @@---Joy--- That is exactly why I don't understand the absolute of purchasing a house. Sometimes it is a good sound investment, but sometimes it is not. Even if you "own" your home, if you cannot afford to pay the Property taxes, the government will take that home. So you never REALLY own that home. Usually when someone buys a home not outright, there is at least a 10 year mortgage. A LOT can happen to an area in 10 years to make it unlivable, crime, poverty being the main things. I still think there is more than one way to do things.

    I worked a a nurse in a state run hospital besides having a pension I put a state supported Traditional IRA and a Roth IRA. I put six percentage of my pay check for 20 years. At first it was slowly going up. Then ten years I was getting it started climbing. As my raises from promotions really added. So from 5000 every increase it now compounds faster and faster. It’s 200000 in the traditional account and 80000 in the Roth. The traditional gets taxed. The Roth is taxes before you put your investment in. And not taxed when you can retire. And draw on it. I also have pension and at 62 it will be 5000 a month Sooooo my father was a a stock broker and taught me well

    Average rental properties (apartments) in my area in southeastern NC are $700 a month. Water and sewer included. Not electricity. When we moved here in 1989 it was $320 (no electric.) Add electricity it would be $150. We are at $850 in 2021. I could easily do $50 a month now on groceries with what I have learned over the years. Not then! LOL! Cheapest car payment $200. ( I know, buy it with cash) Making $12000 a year now would take a long time to save (I need that car to get to work.). Car insurance $ $80. If I am in the city I could ride public transportation. (Did that 30 years ago.) About $60 for a monthly pass now. If I were in the country as I am now I would really need that car. No money left for anything on only $1000 a month in 2021. I believe that every situation is different. There is so much more that might be needed. Clothes, medicine, etc. Hard to compare 20 years ago to day. My opinion. tfs! Blessings!

      @@LivingOnADime -in my area it is. You could do an efficency at $550 or share an apartment ( lowest in our area.) Not everyone's situation is the same. Choices, yes, not everyone has the same choices depending on where they live. I really believe it depends on the persons situation, so many factors involved. None of us can concretely say that what I did you can too. So much has changed in my 30 + years here. Not trying to cause an arguement. You are right about tithing. We chose to move from where we live. It's only 15-20 minutes further away from my workplace but literally just half of the rent we're paying now... the place is still nice and even tho we will spend more money on gas, we still save because the budget for rent is much lower... I was inspired to look for another place after wise people once said:"You can move. You are not a tree." in one of their videos :)

      If you are genuinely looking for an answer, Aldi or other low cost grocery store...purchase, rolled oats, , peanut butter occasionally eggs for breakfast. Bread, bologna or other cheap lunch meat or pbj sandwiches , carrots celery bananas apples for lunches. Buy a couple whole chickens or turkeys when cheap. Roast those for meal, use meat in casserole, make soup with carcass. Frozen veggies are fairly inexpensive. Cabbage and potatoes go a long way. Buy marked down beef for a change. Not glamorous, and by all means visit a food pantry if needed. Find a discount grocery store with close to exp date foods.

    Its hard but it can be done, we went from over $3000 month to $1000, it has been hard to adjust... We live in a small town with a small grocery store and next closest town with grocery stores from here is 150miles away so I either order groceries online or buy stuff on sale to balance food costs ... Thankfully we dont have a lot of huge expenses, we do have 3 small credit cards to build credit rating, we would like to buy land and so our payments are under $100 combined .... We had to do a lot of adjustments when we lost 2/3 of our income, we cut of 2 cell phone and just kept hubbys since he actually needs it, we cut back on tv subscriptions and just kept 2 (hulu and netflix), cut back general spending to what we need or stocking pantry (I keep up on staples, canned goods, household items, hygiene and cleaning items when I find them on sale to keep costs down), we've never been people that eat out much or buy snacky foods but we have a kiddo and she still wants stuff, so when we do want snacks or takeout I try to make as much as I can, discovered that burgers and homemade fries are actually yummier and a fraction of the price so we havemovie night and make our own burgers or Pizza, barely costs anything to make and I usually have all the ingredients at home, same with chinese, indian and other cuisines we like, Ive been trying out different copycat recipes of things we like and we are finding we actually like the home version better so Ive been making panda express mushroom chicken, golden Correll bourbon chicken, my next try is going to be moo goo gai pan and home made egg rolls, I used to make spring roll and freeze in a big batches but havent in years, should be fun

      We watch online churches when we don't have one so we tithe to them. When we don't have any churches we give to: women's shelters, children's homes, ministries that help with human trafficking, individuals who need help (a missionary got cancer and couldn't work to support his family so we sent them some too help) those types of places are where we give.

    Your story made me think back to when we were newly married in 1979. My husband was in the military and brought home $400 a month. The rent for our small apartment was $189 (almost half)! Thinking back, I have no idea how we made it - talk about living on love! But, we did a budget every month with the dollars we had, never used welfare and never went hungry! My husband is retiring this month, we are debt free and have a nice nest egg ready to go. I think budgeting every dollar every month (no matter how much you have) is KEY!
