Funny, my diet is packed with oxalates and this cured my fibromyalgia. Been eating spinach, nuts, seeds and potatoes a lot for years now and I never felt better. Btw, everyone is talking about oxalates lately..
@SN-gc3vc I went to some trusted sources after watching this and apparently, only those with a preexisting condition that is adversely affected by high a high oxalate diet will have s problem with it. For everyone else it's totally fine
@@beans4853 mostly true. It can catch up to you eventually and may not be affected immediately (and some people just chalk things up like arthritis or UTIs as normal and it can be oxalates). But yes, as a whole this is bio individual. I myself am going through oxalate dumping and it's horrendous, would not wish it on my worst enemy.
Well if the decision is to eat either spinach or bok choy, definitely best to choose the bok choy. You might not have to worry about it, but for people with severe health issues, severely limiting oxalates can be life-changing.

🐰 Bunny owners know that spinach is to be avoided because of the oxalic acid content. I have a lot to learn from the rest of this interview though, especially since I have an autoimmune disease and am susceptible to all sorts of issues with digestion, inflammation, etc.
The problem is that the food science usually addresses concerns about a decade after a product has been ingrained in our daily intake. Like the way margarine was touted as better than butter, low fat was the rage in the 80s/90s but were overdosed in sugar to add flavor, etc. Now it's seed oil vs animal fat oil. 🤷🏻♀️
I just made coconut rice pudding for my kids. Very low oxalate. I eat carnivore but you really don’t have to. Norton gives examples of how to cut oxalates across all different eating styles. It’s a matter of choosing bok choy instead of spinach; having vanilla instead of chocolate ice cream, using turnips instead of potatoes. Lima beans instead of great northerns. Is this hugely difficult? Seriously, to get out of chronic pain and inflammation, this is a pretty simple thing to adjust. For some people it could be the key to recovery, as it was for Sally, who resolved her debilitating pain issues by following advice from others who did the same, and gradually reducing - not eliminating, but reducing - her oxalate load. Her book is well researched as she is a well credentialed nutrition scientist with a masters in public health. From all the comments here I’m surprised people are so attached to whatever it is that they are eating now that the idea of making some relatively minor adjustments could make them so irate. Must not be in enough pain yet.
As someone who leans towards minimalism, a carnivore/ketovore/animal-based diet is perfect. It cuts out all these decisions, this sense of feeling overwhelmed by having to eat a variety of foods and the time it takes to prepare them. All while knowing that this way of eating is actually very nutritious and healthy.
Whenever someone tries to paint foods as toxic and "slowly killing you", chances are that they're a grifter with a book to sell, and surprise surprise, their guest has a book to sell. To have someone like this on the show is grossly irresponsible. They're suggesting that we should cut out common foods just because of one potentially negative chemicals, well guess what, all foods are chemicals with different levels of health risks. You could point at any food that could kill you because of this. What she's suggesting is for everyone to have a low oxalate diet when the only people that need to do that are those who would be more at risk from them. Our bodies are different, different foods will do different things to different people. And of course she repeats the same nonsense of seed oils being dangerous and toxic, an idea that was started by ONE scientist that no one else in his field supported, yet it spread on intellectual wastelands like Tiktok, a place where people can dump any BS they like without any accountability where they can repeat the same nonsense from other fools.

I have a similar story as Joshua. I've done the dmards and biologics, listened to all the health gurus and found Sally's book to be the best explanation for my autoimmune ails. I knew it wasn't just grains or dairy because I could consume them on occasion without reproach. The feeling of chards of glass throughout the body is real but with patience, persistence and time, there is healing.
I couldn’t do carnivore for long and going low carbs was not good for my body. I still stay away from gluten dairy sugar and eggs and high oxalates veggies but I had to add back in some veggies to feel better.

I have been vegan for over 15 years and have several friends who have been vegan for similar amounts of time. I would also like to refer people also to some doctors and others prominent in the vegan movement who have been vegan for many more years than I have and are definitely thriving. For example, T. Colin Campbell, Dr. Neal Barnard (with Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine), Dr. Milton Mills, Robert Cheeke (bodybuilder), Victoria Moran, Caldwell Esselstyn, and John Pierre. These are just a handful of names right off the top of my head. I could fill the whole page, but I encourage everyone to check out some of these resources as well.
The fact that Sally Norton and oxalates are being discussed on the Minimalists is a big deal! Very few medical practitioners, including functional medicine doctors and naturopaths, are aware of the dangers of oxalates. It's so difficult seeing millions of people suffer from health issues and not being able to say anything about how it could be caused by oxalates. You know they probably won't believe you and you sound absolutely crazy when you say spinach is bad.
I heard her on other podcasts. The only thing I'm unsure about is Blackberries. I pulled the pdf from the kidney stone foundation and they say blackberries are low in oxalates...

Please go to Nutrition with Judy channel and see her video that just came out regarding all of Paul's bad bloodmarkers. The meat based community is very worried about him but he's doing a lot of harm. Low glycemic occasional berries is not the worst thing, but if you are eating like he is you need to do labwork asap.

Chocolate has CAFFEINE which unnaturally causes the Adrenal Glands to release adrenaline so get energy drop later. Over time adrenal glands are harmed by too much caffeine.
Wow was this an interesting podcast! I have been having issues for at least a year now with scalp sorosis, something I've never had in the past and I'm age 69. I know skin issues run in my family but until this point I never had any issues to speak of. Some time ago I had (already) decided to remove seed oils from my foods and have been trying to purchase as much in whole foods as possible. I figured if I have basic ingredients at home no matter what happened in this crazy world I would still have the knowledge and ability to eat because I stocked what I needed to make bread, or cook from items in my pantry. One of the things I always keep on hand is a variety of nuts. I tend to snack on them basically daily. I use chia seeds in my hot (5 grain) cereal. Now I'm wondering if the things I thought were "good" are not all that good for me in reality. There are several favorite foods I have given up consuming simply because I came to realize they were not actually good food choices. Pretzels are one example because I cannot find a brand in any of the stores in my surrounding area that doesn't use seed oils. This podcast has opened my eyes up to additional foods I may have to think twice about. While I rarely eat out (because I have no control over what is put into my food) I immediately googled "Seed Free Restaurants". I now have several sites bookmarked to use in the future to at least get some idea how my food is likely prepared. Again, a VERY eye opening episode. Thank you for this one.
Dear Minimalists, I love your team and your content but I did not like this episode and this guest's ideas. I don't think this guest is offering enough scientific evidence. Blaming every health problem on one substance is suspiciously simple to me. It does not help to demonize healthy foods. Everything in moderation. Going crazy on the dose of ANY healthy food, would make it poison. “There’s no safe level of anything. Too much water can kill you". Please do not start going down the controversial health advice line. This is mental clutter for me, not minimalism. Thanks for listening.

Vegan diets for children have NOT been outlawed in Italy. This woman is likely referring to a proposal from 2016 that was never passed into law!! I am extremely disappointed you would feature this guest and let her make absolute nonsense claims without any citations. ive been doing the carnivore diet for 4 years now. im 41 and the best shape Ive been in since I was in my early 20's. I strongly believe we are meant to eat meat!! and not veggies or fruits. i even cured my crohns disease and no longer take medication. I dont eat much pork as it doesnt make me feel as good as beef. I eat beef, salt and peccorino romano cheese i use to make meatballs and its very delicious and much cheaper then eating steak!! highly recommended.
You would’ve been born with an internal cooker if you were supposed to eat cooked food and meat. The best shape comes from what you are eliminating rather than eating meat.
In USA - over 15 Million and growing- healthy and happy people no longer are carnivores ❤️ Over 7,000 Doctors USA also no longer are carnivores. DNA tests of cave people, Gladiators, Roman Soldiers, conclusively prove they were mainly plant based. Lots of lies, false advertising, etc. comes from the BILLION dollar meat and dairy industry. UNBIASED, NO AGENDA science proves human body does well on whole grains plant based diet these days especially because there are hundreds of delicious foods. Please also know the obvious facts: biggest land animals are all plant based Elephants, Rhinos, Hippos, Giraffes, Cows, Orangutans, Etc. I’m 76, vegetarian one year and doctors can’t believe my body stats, they actually stated “you’re getting younger”!

Oxalates are in everything. Even meats from animals who consume plants. It goes back to moderation. Don’t blame the food. Blame the over consumption.

Well said, some people are susceptible to 'stones' but most aren't. Seems to be more of a genetic thing.

I’m curious about diets in relation to blood types. This could be why some diets work for some and not for others. I prefer a high fat, low carb diet.
I'm following the blood type diet and can say that it works. Had a symptom free pregnancy after 3 (considered normal) pretty miserable ones

You should read the book. It’s one paper after another in the text. Lots of research, and she published an additional book with all the data.

Lion Diet first. Then add other animal based foods. Read Judy Chow Carnivore Cure
